Big Brother Mafia is the sequel to Ultimatum Mafia. Using the same dichotomy voting scheme and incorporating the US Reality Competition, Big Brother Mafia uses very different rules. Also, prods will be sent out frequently and liberally. These prods should not dissuade you from further participating. I prod frequently to monitor activity levels to see when you pick up prods in relation to when you post. However, if you give lacking and delayed posts after you pick up a prod, it may indicate to me that you need to be replaced. Quantity of prods is not a bad thing by itself. If you do not post for 96 consecutive hours, you may be replaced without any notice.

From an albino exotic dancer from Dubai to a seven-foot blonde snapping turtle breeder from Estonia, our houseguests span every single lifestyle that has not yet been cast on Big Brother. By casting such diverse houseguests this year, we hope to break down the typical stereotypes and game strategies that plagued previous seasons of Big Brother. During each gameday, one player will be crowned with the role of Head of Household (HoH) and has the responsibility of nominating two players for eviction (lynch). The players will have the opportunity to discuss potential candidates before and after the two nominees have been announced. Before the deadline, except for the two nominees and the HoH all players must publicly vote on who they want they want to evict. Votes are irrevocable and the nominee who has the most eviction votes will be evicted (lynched). In the case of a tie, the current HoH will publicly break the tie. The most recently evicted player will then unilaterally select who s/he wants to be the next day’s Head of Household. The game ends when either one of the mafia families equal/outnumber all other players alive or when only townspeople remain.

Each game cycle has several deadlines. Failure to meet certain deadlines may result in forfeiture of power or modkill (if necessary). The first deadline is for the HoH to nominate two players. This must occur within 7 days since the last lynch. The HoH cannot nominate himself for lynch and must nominate only two players. The second deadline is for special powers (such as power of veto, coup d'etat or america's player, etc.). These powers can only be used by the 10th day in a game cycle. Beyond that point, these powers cannot be used in that game cycle. By the 14th day, each nominee must PM me the name of who they would like to become the next HoH in case s/he is evicted. Also, aside from the nominees and the HoH all players except the nominees must publicly vote to evict one of the nominees. If you fail to vote before the deadline, you may be modkilled. Once a player has been lynched, his/her selection for HoH will be crowned for the next game cycle and the deadlines reset.

The general rules for Big Brother (US) can be found on wikipedia here. This gives a list of possible special powers. However, there will not be any competitions to win any power.

Rules

• Each game cycle, one player will be crowned

Head of Househould (HoH)

by the most recently lynched townsperson. This person will hold the position of HoH for the remainder of the cycle and thus cannot be lynched, unless a special power allows otherwise. The HoH has the responsibility of nominating two players for eviction by the 7th day in the game cycle. If for some reason nominations have been changed due to a separate game mechanic, the HoH may lose his ability for nominations or may be forced to change his/her nominations. If this occurs, the HoH will be notified of the changes and new deadlines. The HoH’s only other responsibility is to place a vote in the event of a tie. The HoH should continue to participate in the game throughout the week, as lynches are the only way to eliminate the scum.
• Once the two

nominees

have been announced, each nominee must PM the mod who s/he would like to become the next HoH in the case that the nominee him/herself is lynched. No individual can become HoH in consecutive game cycles. If no PM is received prior to the nominee being lynched, previous data or a random choice may be used in its stead. A lynched person cannot send in a choice after his/her lynch.
• Except for the current

, all other players must vote to lynch/evict one of the nominees. Failure to do so before the deadline may result in modkill. All votes must be in bold.

Vote: Nominee

. In this game, there is no unvoting and please do not confirm your vote. Once you vote, you are stuck with it. Everyone who is eligible must vote before deadline. Lynches will require a simple plurality of votes. If the count ends in a tie, the current HoH will break the tie publicly. If at deadline a player has not yet voted by the 14-day deadline, he may be modkilled.
• Once all players have voted, I will formally post a final vote count. If I do not formally post a final vote count, assume that the lynch has already occurred and deadlines reset. Once you have been lynched, you may no longer post,

• If any special powers exist in the game (ie: power of veto, coup d'etat or america's player, etc.), they will be a one-shot ability that can be passed onward to other players. The current holder of the power can elect to use it that week or pass it onward to another player (but not the person who sent it to him/her) for the next week. The first time that the ability is used by any player in the game, it will be removed for the remainder of the game. When a special power is used in the game, the current holder will PM me how s/he wants to use the power. These powers must be used by the 10-day deadline (to prevent last minute manipulation). Once I receive notice that the current holder wishes to use the power, I will reveal the results of said power, as well as the history of who has had that power during each week in the game.
• Do not edit/delete any previous submitted posts. Do not use invisible text or color=black.
• Do not quote any PMs from me, or anything from outside the game. The game is not to be discussed outside of the thread.
• Please try to post at least once per day. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread and PM me ASAP. Treat this game as a commitment and be considerate.

I think the current consensus is that no one is talking game until the mafia communication period is over, however day zero is intended for

getting to know your fellow players as this may affect the rest of the game.

Nonetheless, I'll be setting a deadline of 23:59 EDT on Friday 28/09/2007 for all mafia communication to cease. For those of you in other timezones, please note that the deadline will be in ~51:45 hours from this post. Mafia may no longer communicate via PMs after that point. But as always, this thread will remain open for all other communication.

I hope to end Day zero by Tuesday as well, but I will notify you the first minute of Saturday to let you know when Day zero will end.

Julie Chen: Now that the twelve houseguests have begun to acquaint themselves with each other, some have realized that they have similar goals in mind to ensure that they will come together at the end. Unbeknownst to the houseguests, certain individuals have been cast in mind with similar ulterior motives. Some archetypes have already banded together with a similar mindset - and will do anything in their power to ensure that they last until the very end. However, others have decided that they will remain unattached so that they can ebb and flow with where the power resides.

And then there were twelve houseguests. But within a few days, the true game will begin and our first Head of Household will be crowned. But how will the first Head of Household be decided? No one knows for certain at this moment. Will one of the pre-formed alliances come to power or will one of the wildcards happen to stumble upon the power? Will secret related individuals realize that they have have a strong connection with others because of similar personality and lifestyles? No one knows for certain.

But first...let's find out the players' first impressions of each other. Each houseguest must secretly submit via PM a progressive list of who they find to be the most trustworthy and who they find to be the least trustworthy in the house. With hope, each houseguest will have discovered how much they trust each other player. Please submit a list 1-11 of who you trust the most at #1 and who you trust the least at #11. Please ensure that each player is ranked only once and that each rank 1-11 has only one player listed in the PM.

You are not allowed to reveal in thread your PMed list of players or a partial list of who you find trustworthy

Welcome back viewers, it is time for the first Head of Household (HoH) competition of this season. Let's watch the competition unfold. But first, the stipulations of the honor. The winner of the Head of Household competition will be granted the highest weekly honor in Big Brother (US). S/he will be adored by all subjects and slaves in the house, but will also be given comfort food and luxury items from home that week. However, this individual is responsible for nominating two houseguests (players) for eviction (lynch) that week. Then all other players will vote to evict one of the nominees that week Since everyone has their ulterior motive in the game, it is advantageous to eliminate all of your evil enemies. If there is a tie vote after everyone has voted, the HoH will cast the tiebreaking vote. Further rules are also in the first few posts, and further guidance may be given through PMs by the mod.

And now the competition will begin. This week's HoH competition is entitled "Stable ground". Players will stand on platforms over the outdoor pool. Those competitors who have stable relationships with others and have the best basis in the house will last longer than others. In fact, the player who has the best average trustworthiness score will win this HoH competition.

Before we reveal Pug89s alignment, let's remember that in order for the game to continue, Pug89 must be the last remaining floater or otherwise one mafia family will have two members and the other remaining alive are one opposing mafia and one floater - which cannot take on the last alliance alone. If Pug89 is a floater, then we will go into sudden death where both sides will try to sway Pug89 into naming someone as the next HoH.

DragonsofSummer and mneme effectively teamed up to eliminate someone, but unfortunately neither are the last remaining floater. That means that either Skruffs or Pug89 is the last floater. And the last floater is Skruffs of course.

Oh no, the game is as predictable as always and the aggressive males team up to take everyone out! The alpha dog mafia have overtaken the Big Brother household and will win the grand prize money! Both Skruffs and Elmo are too weak to take on the mighty alliance and will lose no matter what.

Nightless usually plays with "equals or outnumbers all others alive" win condition, but we can see that even if we had played it out here's what would've gone on:

Elmo wins HoH and nominates very likely both mneme and DoS.

As sole voter, Skruffs takes out DoS likely.

DoS names mneme as HoH.

At final three mneme would have probably evicted Elmo knowing that Skruffs was the only person to assert that he was town.

Alpha dogs would've won even if there was the "must outnumber all others in game" win condition.

Two unfortunate things happened for the town in this game:

pickem failed to submit HoH picks and farside22 getting that role modkilled. I sent a PM to pickem in advance asking if we needed to make any special arrangements because of limited access, he said he'd still get it in on time. FaerieLord not vetoing was the extra kicker.

Modkilling farside22 (r/pickem) was an unfortunate occurrence. Because farside22 mentioned alive players on his (or pickem's list), scum could purposely choose to lynch him just to get a certain person the next HoH. Even if farside22 changed his list, people could probably try to guess who the veto may have been sent to or etc. That's why it was a necessary action. I would've likely not take action if he had only mentioned dead people.

The only power was the Power of Veto (which Skruffs used). I wanted to add a power that would likely benefit town if in their hands but would expose mafia if it was in their hands.

The only thing is I wish you would have had more then just the veto out there to play.

I thought hard about what other things from the show I could add in, but I just could not think of anything that would not be detrimental in the hands of scum. I refused to have non-travelling powers because in a nightless, any power means that person is never lynched. The coup d'etat was too powerful, Golden/Diamond Power of Vetoes were too unilateral as well. Only the Power of Veto made sense as a town power, and the perfect time was when FaerieLord had it. I was bummed out when he didn't use it then. I wasn't creative enough to add a new power.

I like fast games, but games decided by modkills and timeouts? not so much.

I agree. The timeout was something I hated, but I gave pickem extra time and even suggested other considerations in the case he could not make his selections before deadline. As for the modkill, unfortunate as well, but I'm not exactly sure that pickem/farside would've lasted too long anyway.

The deadlines were probably more detrimental to town than to scum, but I can't stand games that lag and this game was much much slower than I anticipated. Ultimatum Mafia was a good pace for me. I had longer deadlines for this game because people said Ultimatum favored scum because of the deadlines. I felt that there was little urgency in this game, so deadlines ended up being redundant and punitive rather than motivating discussion. I felt that too many people pushed the 48 hr post deadline rule too much, but I can't blame people for not taking it seriously (due to the site's norms). However, I refused to mod a game without deadlines just because of my personal preference, but it also made sense because of the "theme".

With no investigative or protective roles, the town was severely outnumbered! That there were two groups who didn't know who the other group was, didn't matter for TOWN, because Town still was facing very harsh odds.

Agreed. 3:3:6 is not favourable for the town. It's been long established. It's something like 38:38:18 chances (as hypothesized by Kelly Chen in Open Setup Nom/Disc thread). I wondered if the dichotomous voting would help town. Turns out that it really doesn't make a difference at all if I look at both Ultimatum and BB Mafia. What happened is that I think the random role assignment happened to be unfavourable to town in both games. 3:3:7 or 8 is probably better for town, but I wasn't going to run a large theme game either time. What's odd is that the majority of the HoHs were town but the strong majority of nominations were for townies anyway. I believed that with dichotomous voting, the two nominees would probably end up being the top two suspects anyway. However, in this game, it didn't happen because the HoHs were allowed to get away with it. I felt that past HoHs that were attacked were attacked mostly outside of the context of their two nominations - and that it really made this more kingmaker than anything else.

I do think this time dichotomous voting did affect the spotlight on mneme. In a regular nightless setup, mneme nor ChaosOmega would've lasted this long. But then again, the impetus should fall on the town to ensure the spotlight sticks on everyone. This happened in the first two days when the HoH facilitated decent discussion. The third day onward the nomination phase was void of any general discussion and the HoH held all the power and the game changed. The game from that point onward felt like a chore to most involved because the power shifted out of their hands (not due to game setup). That's when the town lost, I felt - much like how Kingmaker II also faltered in the end - because power was more in the Kingmaker's hands more than the King or town.

I do agree that this game probably could've worked better as 4:8, but I'm all for testing out the 3:3:6 format and now we've seen how it could feasibly work or not.

As for the argument about mafia equalling all others alive vs. making mafia outnumber all others alive. I thought about it before the game, but when I tested out all possibilities it lead to the minority mafia faction winning in the end. I thought that a game which would make sacrificing a mafia member at a crucial juncture to gain position would be a poor setup in the first place (ie: final four - Elmo eking out the win would've been a poor outcome, I believe)

However, I think that the game followed a very basic and predictable formula. Scum will bus and look town to get the HoH position and last long and town will stay under the radar and get replaced. I thought town had a chance once VRK got HoH, but things changed in week 3. Town had a chance even after that because Skruffs was untouchable, but it seemed that no other townie would last the distance with him.

If I were to do the game again, I think I could go for a 3:3:8, maybe renew the veto once (to give two total) and tighten up deadlines actually. But I'm not doing anything like this game again. If anyone wants to run away with these ideas, go for it.
