It’s the beginning of the ski season in Italy, which means the chance for some winter fun without the crowds. Sixteen of you were lucky enough to get some time off work, and booked time at a delightful resort in the Apennine Mountains outside of Acerno. The Wednesday was a perfect ski day, with light snow on and off through the day. As you settled in for the evening, the snow turned much heavier, and through the night you could hear ominous rumbling.

You wake in the morning to find you’ve been snowed in. Most of the resort staff have not returned from their homes. Those that stayed overnight have been butchered in the kitchen…

The snow and blowing wind continues through a fitful night. When the grey morning comes, you wander down to the kitchen. Breakfast has been laid out for you. There is hot Italian coffee, bread with jam, and over on the sideboard where the meats would normally go, the body of your fellow guest hasdgfas lies cold with his throat cut.

While half your number inspect the body to try to find any clues, the rest hurriedly bundle up to head outside. It is quickly apparent you won’t find anything of use without professional forensics equipment and training. The murderer has cleaned up well, and you are unable to even figure out which of the many knives in the kitchen was used as a weapon. In fact, there is nothing at all to distinguish the victim from any other guest.

Worse news awaits when the group comes back inside. The roads are still blocked, and the only footprints to be found were the ones they made. The murderer, or murderers, is still among you. The only way to ensure your survival is to find them.

(Vi wasn't currently available. I did ask her first. I didn't know about RedCoyote, but thanks for mentioning him -- I'll consider him in the future if I need another replacement.)

As for SpyreX, the V/LA was known before the game started, and he has been posting some even while away. His return date gives him around 2 and a half weeks before deadline of being fully here, which should be fine. If it proves to be a problem, I'm not averse to extending a bit to compensate.

Unfortunately for you, searching his clothes and room reveals nothing that would connect him to the murders at all.

Morning comes after a fitful night. Wandering downstairs, you find there is no breakfast laid out for you. At least there isn’t a body at breakfast today. You take the opportunity to raid the food stores for some sustenance before retiring to the comfort of the chalet’s main room.

On a couch, awaiting your arrival, is VP Baltar. Well, perhaps that isn’t quite accurate. Looking more closely, you find he has been strangled to death. Searching his person and his room, you find nothing that would connect him to the murders. After moving the body out and checking that no progress has been made digging the chalet out, it is time for another day of investigation.

Well, I do appreciate the participation, don't get me wrong. There's just a point where it becomes exceedingly difficult for me to keep up as a mod, and this game is pushing that boundary. So I'd appreciate it being dialed back a bit, so I can keep up and do my modly duties properly.

The day passes in a blur. Before he has a chance to protest, or even say anything, Cephrir is grabbed and dragged to the kitchen. The mob sets on him with knives until he no longer moves. Searching his person, however, reveals no evidence he was involved in the murders.

Before retiring, it dawns on you that the bodies of the four dead are going to start getting rather unpleasant over the next few days, with no clue how long you will be stuck in the chalet. The best option anyone can think of is to move the bodies out into the snow, where the cold will keep them from smelling for a while. Everyone helps with the move, and with that accomplished, you head off to sleep.

Another morning dawns. A quick glance outside as you wander to the kitchen reveals the snow outside has not lessened, and you are still cut off. Sighing, you raid the kitchen for perishables. You will have to start rationing soon.

No bodies in the kitchen today, or in the more comfortable areas of the ski lodge. For a second you think the nightmare has ended, until you once more look outside. One is out there, hanging by its neck from the lift lines. A group goes out to take a look, and cuts down a dead and frozen camn. A search reveals nothing that would connect her to the murders. You also find that whoever did this was thorough, as you can’t even find footprints in the snow to hint at the murderer.

When camn’s body is laid with the others, you return indoors for another day of investigation.

All I can say is that I mentioned that never posting again wasn't acceptable and that I could find a replacement rather easily should he choose to go that way. He chose to keep playing, which means there's an expectation he'll be back posting soon.

As for the other, in every vote count until the day ends, I'll include the deadline and a note saying that it's still 6 to lynch at deadline. Just as a reminder so people aren't surprised by it.

That good mood ends upon entering the main room of the chalet. Hanging on the wall, impaled by a couple of ski poles, is Vi. She is quite dead by the time you find her. Frustratingly, but not surprisingly, nothing on her person or in her belongings connects her to the murders. Carefully, she is taken down and laid outside in the bitter cold with the rest of the bodies. With the cold and no sign of anyone other than yourselves around the slopes, it appears you won’t be dug out today.

Ok, comments...

Setup:

I think the numbers were where they should have been. I basically wanted a Mountainous game with a group of 3 scum, so figured out how many players I needed to make that happen. I figured it was pretty intuitive that 3 was the number of scum this game ought to have had, so I was rather surprised there was a lot of discussion about 4 being possible. But since it wasn't an open game, I couldn't really correct it after the game started. Might have been better as an open, in hindsight.

Activity:

Where to start with this? Too many posts that are too long absolutely killed the town, and in some ways the game. Unfortunately, this kind of thing is well outside of what mods can control, so it's going to be up to the players to learn their lesson from this and improve elsewhere.

Part of the issue here is that too much information makes it harder to find what the scum are doing. There's just too much noise to find the signal. (And if town is making the noise, then the players doing it are in effect sabotaging their team.) The other part is that excessive posting has the effect of squeezing other players out of the game, which is what created the so-called lurking problem. It's hard to tell who is strategically lurking, and who genuinely can't keep up. Keeping a lid on your posts to allow others to participate would remove this confounding factor -- if the game is moving at a reasonable pace, then lurkers have either flaked (which can be dealt with) or are doing it on purpose.

If I had to make posting guidelines to follow, it would be to aim for this as a player:
1-2 posts per day,
3 paragraphs per post maximum unless absolutely necessary to your argument,
1-2 quotes per post, and only sentences you're directly responding to,
No double posts unless absolutely necessary, and avoid completely 3 or more posts in a row,
10-15 thread pages per day.

These are ideals, but when you go over, you start to get into diminishing returns. So if you're going over, do it consciously.

Replacements:

I think the over-posting affected this a lot, to be honest. But for the specific issues GIEFF asked me to comment on...

With Mastin, I really think he did himself in. My understanding is that he helped push the game into over-posting mode, then went on V/LA for a few days during which the game continued at the same unreasonable pace, and was unable to catch up when he returned. Trying to do post-by-post analyses on each page since the beginning only compounded the problem, as the game produced pages far faster than he could possibly have analyzed them in this way. Basically, a strategic error here on his part. This is not the kind of thing a mod can, or should, save a player from.

With Cephrir (and blackcatcontract), it was the spew that was a problem. I did in fact get confirmation that Cephrir was still in the game during night 2 by PM. Then, before the 9-5 workday in the US ended on the first day after game 2 opened, there were 10 new pages of text walls. Now, I don't know Cephrir's schedule, but anyone on that schedule who is not allowed to post at work would not have been able to keep up with that. Also, you lynched Cephrir around 36 hours after the day opened. Way too fast to reasonably determine what was going on with him, and to deal with it. (As a further note, apparently blackcatcontract was in the process of composing a post when the hammer fell on that day.) To put it simply, failing to post for 36 hours does not make one a lurker. Players mistook the number of pages being produced as a measure of time on this one.

Play:

Day 3 really was the turning point, mostly because from Day 3 on there were a lot of really funky scum interrelationships going on. If you have the time and energy, go back and read our three scum from Day 3 onward. There's lots of fun stuff there you can use in the future for scumhunting.

Besides which, I locked the thread pretty soon after GIEFF's hammer, so Kmd couldn't post. I think the game might have had a chance to turn out differently had GIEFF waited until closer to the last minute before hammering -- there was at least a chance there that Kmd would have come on and found himself in the situation of having to choose between the two wagons.
