It's a big update, but a lot of it doesn't have to do with world generation. There will be a new ore in the Nether (maybe regen the Nether only? is that even possible?) and that's about it as far as changes that wouldn't be available without regenerating at least part of the world.-

If that's the main goal, why not just walk off into the woods with nothing and start over? Take a boat to a far away island and you've achieved your goal.-

This is why I would be firmly in support of regening unused chunks in the Nether at the very least so that we can take full advantage of the new update.
I would also probably be in support of a full regen at a major update to world generation. I just don't see a compelling need to do it right now. If you want to start over, take a pit of lava and throw all your stuff into it. Burn down your house. Or simply TP away and set your home at a different place, if your house is at an absurdly far away location. You can remove the "cookie jar" without a full regen of the server. It just takes a little more effort.-

I use it mostly to get the current player list on the server, tbh. I like to see who's on to see if it's worth getting on. I don't like playing by myself. As long as it has a player list, the map can look like anything for all I care. If there's an easier way to see the player list that I don't know about, then just direct me there.-

No, and if there's really no other way to do it then I support it being removed. I just hoped we could do more to make it work first.
I don't know much about IndustrialCraft and GregTech, but based on the discussions that have taken place and what I've read about the add-on on the interwebs, in order to make this work, we'd be essentially re-writing GregTech completely to change a lot of stuff back to how it was in the vanilla IndustrialCraft. We might as well write our own mod to IndustrialCraft if we're going to put in so much work to keep the few features of GregTech that people actually enjoy and change the majority of GregTech's changes back to the way it was. Not worth it, in my opinion.-

I'd say regen it and host an official Enderdragon run once a month. Let whoever goes on the run have first pickings of all the resources there. If you miss the run, then you can see if anything is left over on the island, barter with the people that went on the run, or wait for the next one.
Spawning in what people need should be avoided at all costs, in my opinion. It's a slippery slope.-

Well, the problem is that whoever is available for the dragon run will be instantly rich because they'll have non-renewable ores that have been completely mined out until the next run. That means that if you're unavailable on a Saturday, typically (or even just the one Saturday when a run is being done) you'll not have another chance to get this ore for a whole cycle. If you make the cycle 2 months, that means that people could go a full 4 months without this ore if they are unavailable on one day. I think we should have it monthly to give everyone a chance to go on the run. Bi-weekly runs are too frequent, I agree, but monthly is fine.-

Is it possible to do an endfarm and just leave the endfarm out of the regen? We'd probably have to rebuild a small part of a walkway to it each time we regen'd, but we'd have an endfarm. Alternatively, it could be jetpack-accessible only after the first regen and we could just not bother with a full walkway.-

Oh, ok. I've been reading parts of the conversation and skipping others because I keep coming to the thread to see like 4 new pages of posts.
If we do an identical starting kit, then I propose Boots of Traveler, a Pocket Crafting Table, a fully fueled Electric Jetpack, and a diamond pickaxe. From there, you can gather everything else. I'd still vastly prefer starting fresh, though.-

Also, if you could find a seed in DW that spawns us in an extreme hills biome, I will give you free cake.-

In post 10826, izakthegoomba wrote:Ok, how about this. Slightly tweaked from what I sent you and Maru earlier.
Vanilla - 1 Stone Sword, 1 Stone Pickaxe, 1 Stone Shovel, 1 Stone Axe, 8 BreadAbsolutely.
CompactSolars - 1 LV Solar ArrayNope. This isn't early game stuff.
EnderStorage - Ender Chest (all white)Nope. This isn't early game stuff.
IC2 - 1 Treetap, 8 Sticky Resin, 1 CF Sprayer, 64 CF Pellets (seriously, you guys will not believe how much fun those are...)I don't know what these are, but I'm guessing you should only be giving the earliest item, meaning probably the treetap. Giving some of the product of that item takes out the work involved in using it and the part where people have to figure out the mod.
Iron Chests - 1 Diamond ChestThis is pushing it, in my opinion, but I would say this is fine.
Mystcraft - 1 Notebook (empty), 1 Descriptive Book (empty, unused)Definitely not. Mystcraft will lag the server to a degree because it creates new realms. If people want to use it, that should be encouraged because it's cool as shit, but you shouldn't do the grunt-work for them. You have to make it at least a LITTLE difficult to get into this mod so that everyone doesn't just run around creating realms and then quit the server, leaving us with lag.
OmniTools - 1 OmniWrench, 1 Forge Lexicon (both for convenience and satisfaction of OCD)Don't know enough about this mod to comment, but I would default to no.
Soul Shards - 1 Soul CageThis works.
Thaumcraft3 - 2 Tables, 1 Scribing ToolsYes, because of how easy these are to make and how it will encourage people to check out Thaumcraft. I would even add the first wand, probably.
Twilight Forest - 6 Roses, 6 Flowers, 2 Water Buckets, 1 DiamondAbsolutely ABSOLUTELY not. Seriously, what is this nonsense? You're GIVING people roses and flowers? They can go collect that shit themselves! We should make a solitary TF portal at spawn and then you can go find the materials if you want to build another. You should still have to work for stuff in the new server...
Bolded above are my thoughts on each component.
In post 10860, izakthegoomba wrote:Like I said: it's optional. There will be an option to start playing without a starter kit.
But whatever, a twilight portal isn't expensive anyway. We can knock it off the list.
This does not address the concerns that starting with a starter kit causes problems by eliminating the early game. All this means is that the people who elect to actually play the game as intended will be left gathering stuff while watching others do really cool things. They'll always be a step behind.
Frankly, as it stands, I would not come over to the new server with this starter kit, most likely.-

Here's my opinion as far as what's desirable goes.
1st: Starter kit with stone tools and food
2nd: Completely fresh
3rd: Hotbar of 2-3 items IF restrictions are in place to prevent any advanced items from being brought through (no jetpacks, no solar helmets, no quantam crap, etc. - nothing that would take you longer than 3 hours of playing from the complete start to reach, in my opinion)
4th: Starter kit with relatively advanced stuff from all mods
5th: Hotbar with no restrictions
If the 4th or 5th option happen, I'm extremely unlikely to play on the new server. I'll probably stick with the vanilla server or join a new one entirely.-

This looks fair to me. Input on if there is anything YOU think I am missing/you think should be removed. (the goggles I added due to M's previous insistence that everyone needs them)
Full Leather Armor Set, Bow/Arrows, Sword, Iron Tools, Map, Compass, Food, Torches, Chest, Crafting Table, Stove, Bed, Boat (in case someone wants to go far-off and runs into an ocean) are all for Vanilla.
Wand of Apprentice and Goggles of Revealing for ThaumCraft.
TreeTap (w/ or w/o 1 rubber tree sapling?) and Cactus are for IC/BC, for their respective forms of item/power/liquid traveling (pipes/cables)
EMPTY Notebook is for MystCraft (it collects symbols from your Ages as you create them so you can customize ages with the resulting index of symbols. It requires another mod-item to work. A Writing Desk or something like that, you place the notebook and the Age Book in the desk together and the notebook transcribes your age's symbols.)
Take out the map because it's not entirely necessary with Rei's Minimap. Get rid of the Goggles of Revealing because they're an item that has to be researched in TC3. Possibly add in their place a writing table and like 5 sheets of paper so people can get right into researching and then making the goggles for themselves.
^ I would give my seal of approval to that Starter Kit with the above changes.-

We need to decide on something for the FTB server ASAP and switch it over so I can play it again. kthxbye
Also, proposal: On the new FTB server, OPs do not give out any items as part of a contest/game/whatever or anything like that. I think it majorly devalued the gaming experience last go around - people got items that they didn't earn by playing through the game (myself included).
EDIT: Of course you could give out items as a contest/game/whatever if you actually made them yourself and wanted to do it out of the goodness of your heart - just no spawning in shit.-

In post 10984, Maestro wrote:Is it that the items we handed out were useful in some way rather than decorative unobtainables like Cracked Stone and Cobwebs?
Yes and no.
Yes, decorative items being given out are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than items of immense usefulness being given out.
No, you shouldn't really give out decorative items either if they have to be spawned in. If you want to hold a contest, it should mean something. It should mean that you worked to collect the prize. Isn't that so much more rewarding? Also, spawning in even a single item and giving it out equals immense begging on the server.
For an example, me and Klaz got a portal gun after completing a Portal-based challenge (turrets and shit). Portal guns are pretty hard to make. They're incredibly useful. We put in maybe 10 minutes of work to get an end-game item. That takes the challenge out of the game.
Also, within a day or two, many people were begging for their own or for nether stars to make one. This attitude spread as the server went on and more stuff was given out. It's not a positive thing, in my opinion. People shouldn't even think it's remotely okay to beg an OP for a hard-to-obtain item. They should immediately be thinking that they should get to work earning it themselves.-

In reality, that doesn't happen. Running the scripts doesn't take up a lot of CPU. You would need to have an absurdly large number of turtles running some type of infinite loop script in order to make any type of noticeable lag. You'd also need a chunk-loader to keep them active (unless you planned on staying logged in near them to purposefully lag the server).-

YOU DID IT WRONG MARU
You don't do it like this:
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction
You do it like this:
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication/Division
Addition/Subtraction
The multiplication and division is one step, as is the addition/subtraction. So 5/5*3 is 3, not 1/3.-
