Daein, year 649...

The snowy country to the northeast was the belligerent in the Mad King's War, but was ultimately left to fend for itself by their king. After their country was torn apart, they were crushed under the iron grip of Begnion's occupation, overseen by its Senate. For three years, Daein had neither resources nor will to fight, forcibly removed from the world scene by the reparations they were forced to pay.

The people of Daein hoped for a savior, anything that could take them back to the time when there was no war and no occupation. Then, a miracle occurred...

The last, lost heir to Daein's throne was discovered in the desert to the east. Simultaneously, a mysterious silver-haired maiden appeared in the capitol, with rumors of miraculous power surrounding her...

Behind the charisma of the Maiden and the legitimacy of the Prince, a massive revolt spread throughout Daein. Even in spite of Daein's crippled state, the people were able to overthrow Begnion's cruel reign and establish themselves as sovereign again. Daein would finally be able to start the long process of reconstructing their lives from before the war...


As that year passed, news of the scandals and excesses of the Begnion Senate came to light. When it came to light that the Empress herself, the Apostle Sanaki, was imprisoned and narrowly avoided assassination by escaping into exile with the help of her Holy Guards, Begnion was rocked by a massive schism between supporters of the Senate and supporters of the Apostle even as an army combining the military might of most of the civilized world began moving toward Begnion. But even as the Apostle's Army moved toward Begnion, Daein openly declared war.

Nobody expected Daein to give the Apostle's Army any trouble. After all, Daein had its own reason to side against the Senate. Yet the King, with the Maiden of Dawn as his general, has ordered relentless assaults on the Apostle's Army. Their motives a mystery, the Maiden has relentlessly launched cruel offensives with inhuman tactics, spurning repeated offers of cease-fires. However, even her famed ability to turn defeats into successes and her fanatical following has failed to deter the Apostle's Army, at the expense of thousands of troops her army can't afford to spare. Yet in spite of this she continues to attack, continues to harry the Army.

Even as rumors of King Daein's death start to swirl, the Maiden has ordered a full-on attack. The commanders of the Apostle's Army have run out of patience for an armistice. The order is finally given to crush the nation of Daein utterly.

But as the final battle is staged, the entire map falls into confusion...

While it is not necessary to have a detailed understanding of the politics and plot of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn to function in this game, I can't deny that it may be useful. Plus it's interesting! Thus, here is a quick synopsis of who's who and a general idea of everything that has happened up until this point. This section has spoilers and etc., obviously, though if you're playing this game you probably don't care.

Spoiler: The Factions of Tellius: In the Year 649 of the Goddess

Crimea

- Presently ruled by the kind Queen Elincia and administered from horseback by her Royal Knights, the northwestern country of Crimea was wrested from Daein control three years ago. Upon the public return of Apostle Sanaki, Elincia brokered the treaty that formed the alliance of the Apostle's Army in exchange for promises of heavy concessions from Sanaki's native Begnion. The Crimean people were initially mistrusting of entering an alliance with Gallia and its beastmen, but the debt they owe to the Gallians for helping rebuild their country forces them to put their qualms to the side. Aside from that, this is another chance to take revenge on Daein, for which there is no lost love.

The Greil Mercenaries are centered in Crimea. Their leader, Ike, is considered the hero of the Mad King's War.

Daein

- The losers of the Mad King's War, the snowy country to the northeast has until recently been occupied by Begnion's military. The broken citizenry finally rose in a sweeping revolution earlier this year, championed by two dubious figures. The first is King Pelleas, who backed by a few remnants of the Old Daein claims to be the lost heir to Mad King Ashnard. The second is Micaiah, the so-called "Maiden of Dawn" whose country-wide cult of personality has gone as far as to suggest that she can work miracles. Having seized control of Daein, they are now joining their former oppressors from Begnion for reasons that defy explanation, and have demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice themselves in battle if need be.

Micaiah's inner circle is a group of well-intentioned street rats who call themselves the Dawn Brigade. Officially led by a former merchant named Nolan, they are unquestioningly loyal to each other.

Begnion

- The largest and most powerful country on the continent, from which the other beorc countries Crimea and Daein won their independence. Begnion occupies the east and southeast of the land mass. Begnion is an aristocracy, led by a political Senate. The Senate is in turn presided over by the religious leader, the Apostle. At this time Begnion's Senate, led by Vice-Minister Lekain of Gaddos, has exiled Apostle Sanaki and rules a now-divided populace. They are presently using the time Daein is buying for them to prepare their defense against the Apostle's Army.

The Begnion Central Army was originally fighting against the Laguz Alliance, but Apostle Sanaki usurped control of the Begnion Central Army from Senator Valtome and General Zelgius as the first step to her return from exile. The Apostle's Army is comprised of the remnants of the Begnion Central Army, Crimea's army, and the Laguz Alliance. The army is directed by Sanaki and its general is Ike.

Gallia

- A densely forested nation to the west claimed by the beast tribes. Lion King Caineghis ordered his hotheaded nephew Skrimir to take command of the Gallian Army in hopes that the campaign against Begnion would be a proving ground for his leadership abilities. However, once the initial assault went awry, Skrimir and his legions of cats and tigers took deep losses as the Central Army very nearly crushed them within their own country's borders. Gallia makes up the major portion of the Laguz Alliance Army.

Phoenicis

- A craggy island nation south of Tellius ruled by the proud Hawk King Tibarn. Claiming kinship with the massacred Heron clan of Serenes, Tibarn and his avian allies joined the Gallian Army to form the Laguz Alliance. However, while the contingent of the Hawks' fighting corps was away, the ravens of Kilvas - in implicit complicity with Begnion - slaughtered every man who stayed behind at Phoenicis. The remaining Hawks have no place to go now but to the Apostle's Army, where they are ready to serve revenge cold.

Kilvas

- An even craggier island nation just east of Phoenicis. The Raven clan resides here, presided over by the cunning and historically disloyal King Naesala. Initially, he joined forces with the Laguz Alliance with the Hawks, but seized a critical opportunity to massacre the Hawk tribe instead in order to curry favor with Begnion. Since then, the Ravens and their scheming King have been lying low - probably a good thing for their own sakes. The Ravens are well-known for acting as mercenaries wherever there is a profit to be made, though...

The Laguz Alliance army consists of the combined might of Gallia, Phoenicis, and Kilvas - minus Kilvas now that they've done a face heel turn.

Serenes

- Several years past, the previous Apostle of Begnion was assassinated and the blame was placed on the Herons who lived in this sacred forest in the middle of the continent. Genocide ensued, and in the present day there are only four Herons left in the world - the royal family. Under the custody of Phoenicis, the Herons have waited impatiently for their day to see justice set right. Unfortunately for them, they are in no way bred for combat, so they must rely on the Hawk tribe to act for them in matters of war. At present Serenes has been annexed by Begnion.

Goldoa

- A secluded nation nestled in the mountains of southern Tellius ruled by the Black Dragon King, Dheginsea. The Dragon Tribe is strictly neutral and isolationist in all affairs, and very strictly prohibits anyone from entering or leaving the country in an effort to maintain this state. Yet the few times they have permitted their own to leave the country are causing the current war to strike very close to home, as Dheginsea's family has very close ties to Daein...

Hatari

- A fabled nation on the other side of the Desert of Death, from which a couple of members of the Wolf Tribe claim to have come. Could this be a sign that there is life outside the continent of Tellius? The woman calling herself Queen Nailah has ties to both Daein and Serenes, and at this time does not appear to have chosen a side in this war.

Ike felt a tugging on his cape. He darted his head to the right and saw his sister by his side plaintively looking up to him.

"Ike, how much longer will this go on?"

Ike's eyes narrowed. "It depends on how long Micaiah wants to fight. It could be a while."

This wasn't the answer Mist wanted to hear. "But, what about the Medallion? Don't you remember?"

"Yeah. I remember, Mist."

"I'm... I'm scared, Ike. This war has caused enough chaos that the flame in the medallion is starting to burn out of control. Can't we stop this?"

Ike knew the answer to this too. All of these things had been discussed at base camp two or three times. But they were still valid, pressing questions. "If Micaiah won't surrender, then the only option left is to cut off the Daein army now, before things get beyond our help. If we let them retreat again, they'll just come back for more."

Mist looked down, deeply pained by this whole concept. "So, we have to finish off Daein now before things get too chaotic..." Mist looked up again, clearly troubled. "Ike, why must we fight Daein? Why are they going against us right now of all times?"

This, too, was a question argued in circles at base camp. Ike shook his head. "I don't know, Mist."

And with that, he walked back into the fray.

On a hill on the other side of the snowy woods, Micaiah stood motionlessly as she surveyed the now-familiar scene of senseless fighting. These people were killing each other with all their heart and all their might, operating largely on a trust that their leaders were doing the right thing. She could almost feel the blood on her own hands.

In fact, this time the carnage seemed to be even more brutal than in the previous engagements. She could clearly make out a tiger throwing a hapless black-armored soldier high into the air before pouncing on it. The Maiden of Dawn closed her eyes. What would the Goddess think of this?

Her answer was immediate in coming. This is something that she would have to take up with Goddess Ashera when they meet. What she was doing now was for the people she loved. The end justified the means.

Micaiah opened her eyes again. Something seemed... strange about this particular battlefield though. She felt an anticipation that something was going to happen... though she didn't know what. She tried to pick it out by studying the fighting below her, but she felt her mind grow heavy as she watched it. She would learn of it soon enough, most probably.

Leanne was where she wasn't supposed to be, and she knew it. She could feel it, too. Her head felt like it was about to implode on itself as she tried to cradle it in her aching arms, and her sickened heart beat in a flurry as she felt herself become overwhelmed by the confusion and tension surrounding her. A sheltered empath like her had no place anywhere near the final destruction of the lives and hopes of a sovereign nation, and she knew something like this would happen. But she chose to be here anyway, standing alongside her friends as they risked themselves time and again for the sake of what was right.

Yet such self-inflicted torture has a way of making its victims question their judgment as they sink into pain beyond their reckoning. But this time, Leanne's thoughts turned not to self-absorbed misery, but... fear. Foreboding. A sense of imminence.

She struggled to unclench her vocal cords and think of what she wanted to say. "P--" She couldn't do it. "Puh--" She should have realized earlier the futility of trying to work through the modern tongue. But she still tried. "P-P--Pull--"

She could feel herself starting to sway off-balance. Her body barely registered as she weightlessly collapsed on her side into the snow beneath. As she lay there, she managed to say what was on her mind before laying still.




Some priests saw her fall, though they could not understand the ancient language. They took her away from the battlefield in hopes that she would recover, though the trauma of simply being out there was too much for the poor heron to get over without a lengthy recovery.

Taking point from the skies was one of Begnion's most feared commanders. Tanith, deputy commander of the Holy Guard, was directing her elite pegasus knight regiment against Daein's hardy dracoknight squadron. Deftly maneuvering around the clumsier but snow-hardened dragon riders, she steeled herself for a long battle in the skies above the main fighting below.

She neither saw nor heard the arrow coming. But then, the arrow didn't hit her. It hit her horse. Her pegasus immediately went into shock, bucking her backward off its back before losing altitude itself.

Tanith did not fear death. She embraced it as part of her job description. Yet as she fell, she became enveloped in a chilling cloak of despair.

Somewhere away from the vale where the brutality of war was making itself all too apparent, an innocent young girl had wandered off to a snow-covered clearing.

They hadn't needed her at the front, so she took the time to go by herself to a peaceful place (relatively speaking; the fire and noise from the battle were still definitely near) and pray to the goddess for guidance and strength for her army. With the blessings of Goddess Ashera, surely she and her friends would overcome. And if not... it would at least be in her grace and protection. Such is all one could ever ask.

As she finished praying, she felt a renewed vigor. She felt bathed in light, light like she had never seen or felt it before. Light that sparkled and danced on the snow, lit up the trees, and made the world shine with holy order.

She smiled with a childish, joyed smile. She loved the light. She was devoted to the light. And, surrounded as she was by its radiance, she felt herself at a transcendent peace within it. As if it were the most natural thing to do, she instinctively gave herself to the light.

And the light received her.



It was a few hours later before they realized that she was missing. Nobody knew why she left. Nobody knew where she was. Even after searching, there was no sign of her. They could only assume that she had been spirited away.

This was the last battle. It wasn't even a question; it was just something Sothe

felt

. As he stood overlooking the battle from a hillside, he could clearly see that Daein's army was getting ravaged by the Crimeans and Gallians, but Daein's sheer strength of will stopped them from actually progressing. He wondered how long that would last. If Micaiah's plan didn't work before the enemy army broke their ranks, they were all as good as dead.

Sothe's eyebrows furrowed. The soldiers' strength to fight came largely from their faith in the Silver-Haired Maiden, their savior in a time of extreme hardship and violence. In fact, all of this was because of Micaiah. She was the one who orchestrated this entire campaign, and had pushed herself to her very limits in the process. She loved Daein and her people so much that she was willing to sacrifice herself for them. And if Daein lost this battle, Sothe bitterly reasoned, Micaiah would become less a martyr than a scapegoat. Not a very innocent scapegoat, but this war wasn't her idea to begin with.

The futility of this entire war was imminent. They were fighting the combined might of four countries with... what were the words? The "tattered remnants of a defeated country". All for an unjustifiable cause. And they had Commander Ike fighting on their side. Sothe wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. But, Sothe's decision to stay was already made. He would never, never leave Micaiah's side. Micaiah was Sothe's world, and Sothe was Micaiah's pillar of strength. As long as both of them drew breath, they would live together, no matter how or where. And Micaiah unshakably decided to act as Daein's general. Her charisma was unmatched throughout the country, and if she turned her back on Daein, they would be lost.

Thinking of her, Sothe turned to face Micaiah. She was very terribly exhausted; while she was still standing, her eyes were shut, her head was bowed slightly forward, and her mouth was slightly open. For the leader of the Daein army, this was an ill portent. Sothe started to walk toward her to wake her up, but as he approached her he heard her speaking in a low voice.

"...who... who's calling? I'm here..."

Sothe's eyes opened in alarm as he placed his hand on her shoulder. "Come on, Micaiah, wake up."

Micaiah only slightly responded to Sothe's touch as she continued muttering under her breath. "Yes... Yes, I'm..." As she spoke, she turned away from Sothe, and he couldn't hear the rest of it. Sothe started to reach out again, but Micaiah had already started moving with a strange deliberateness. She was walking toward an empty expanse of snow behind her, away from the Daein lines, but she did not seem to be aimlessly wandering. The sight of it struck Sothe as unnerving as he watched her amble away, but after a few minutes, Sothe started running after her before he lost sight of her silver hair against the snow.

The Daein army was now without its general. It was up to those who believed in her to see her plan through, or else this would be the last time Micaiah and Sothe saw the proud nation of Daein as it should be.

"There's no need to prolong this battle.
Take out their leader, and the army has no choice but to surrender."

General Ike raced to the back of the Daein lines, running directly past an incredulous wing of soldiers and using his gilded sword to cut a path through a cavalry group. He was going straight for the enemy marshal... The Maiden of Dawn herself.

Micaiah was standing by herself in a small, clear circle among the throngs of supplies and guards at the rear line. She saw a blur of movement coming and recognized her assailant immediately by instinct. She turned her head down, knowing what was about to happen. Sothe saw Ike coming too, and quickly stepped in between the two of them, but he was flung aside into the snow. There was no malice in Ike's strong left arm - he was simply dispatching an obstacle.

Ike slowed to a walk as he closed the distance to Micaiah as her incredulous guards looked on. "You're Micaiah, aren't you? Tell your men to surrender, or I'll do it for you."

The small woman in front of him began talking in a low voice, her head still tilted to the ground. "General Ike... I'm glad to finally meet you."

Micaiah lifted herself up to her full height. "Sothe always speaks of you. I've heard all about your valor and deeds. I feel like I know your kind spirit and simple morality just from what he has told me. It's an honor to finally know the one who Sothe is always lavishing praise on."

Ike wasn't sure if Micaiah was being honest or not with this flattery, and wasn't impressed regardless. "I was told to bring you back alive. Surrender now, and--urckk!"

Ike staggered backward as Sothe planted a dagger in Ike's back. Sothe retreated quickly as Ike began to collapse, his face turned away so he didn't have to see what he had just done to the man he admired most.

Micaiah continued speaking as if nothing had happened. "But this is the price I will pay to save Daein. This is what must be done." She began chanting in a strange, unintelligible language as a shining ball of light formed in front of her. She raised her head skyward and watched the orb grow in size as it hovered directly over its intended victim.

Ike could do nothing but watch as the shining light loomed larger over him as it descended.
Micaiah's rhythmic voice could be heard distinctly over the gasps and cries of those looking on.

Far away, over at the Apostle's Army camp, a massive pillar of light could be seen piercing the sky across the battlefield.

One figure clothed in black regalia walked about the front as if nothing was going on. He had a look of distaste on his face, as if the whole affair was not particularly amusing to him. It wasn't, really. He had come to see a war for the entire continent, and all he got was a bunch of savage animals fighting a ragged army that had once passed itself off as the finest in the land. Even the beasts were not entertaining him. A tawny cat leaped for the man, but he swung his hand wide and the cat was thrown to the side with such great force that it skidded on an icy patch until it came to rest fifteen meters away.

This whole engagement was very much NOT what he bargained for. At least, not yet. He decided to give it all one last try. He walked directly in the middle of a fight between two opposing halberdiers, and shouted as loud as he could. "Could anyone try to kill me here?"

In direct response, no fewer than thirteen people rushed toward him with weapons drawn. As they approached, the man muttered an evil curse under his breath. Almost immediately, all of the unfortunate souls who chose to engage him collapsed where they were under the wrath of Hel - alive, but enfeebled to the point where they were unable to move themselves.

The stranger snorted and walked away, leaving those unlucky thirteen to be trampled. As he retreated, he called out to no one. "This continent is nothing I am interested in. I'm leaving."

A bright arcane circle formed around the sorcerer, and before anyone could understand just who this man was or what he was doing, he vanished in a flash of light.

Somewhere away from the main staging area, well aside from Daein's supply convoy, a stray bishop was watching the battle. In spite of his simple garb, it was clear from his bearing that he was a man of no small confidence. His staff was a model that seemed far advanced from standard Daein issue, but then, nothing about this man seemed to be in line with the Daein army. The man glanced down at his right hand, which seemed to be cloaked in an ethereal glow, and then looked up again. His face was serene, but carried an air of troublement - an involuntary reaction to the anxiety he was containing within himself.

The man inched ever closer to the main lines, his gaze darting back and forth to his glowing hand. He dared not be spotted. He surveyed the skies to ensure that the Hawks, Pegasus Knights, and Dracoknights were two hundred yards away, checked the trees for nested Snipers, and then moved just behind the crest of a snowy hill to take in the atrocity of the war.



This man was being followed. He knew he was being followed, but he could not sense by what or why.

The bishop began to slowly turn around to face who it was he was sensing, but while he was turning a sharp impact knocked his tall, slender body forward. He slid over the ridge and right into one of Daein's support lines, coming to a rough stop by colliding with a barrel of spare spears.

The snow-drenched bishop looked up to see a wild-eyed man holding an axe facing him. Following his gaze, it became immediately apparent that the axefighter's attention was focused on the bishop's glowing hand. The bishop started to explain the cover story he had rehearsed prior to his arrival, but it was clear in the axefighter's eyes that he wasn't interested in talking. The fighter suddenly began screaming, and the bishop rolled to the side and began racing up the hill as fast as his robes and the slick snow would let him.

Atop the ridge, the bishop began running for the treeline fifty yards away. As he ran, though, he felt *something* hit him from behind. He wanted to keep running, but he involuntarily turned around to see what had struck him. It was the hand axe of the man pursuing him - the axefighter had thrown it to try to slow the bishop down. While the bishop was completely unharmed in spite of the impact, it seemed the fighter had succeeded in slowing him down.



This was quickly turning into the bishop's worst-case scenario. He quickly gazed at his staff - a sturdy silver rod with two prongs securing an oversized, lustrous, purple orb. All he needed to do now was get his pursuer to hold off long enough to cast his spell while standing still...

The bishop turned around and held his staff in one hand, hoping to use it to ward off the axefighter. The fighter, showing no evident concern for thought or finesse, took a wild vertical swing at the bishop but missed terribly to the right. The fighter, carried by the momentum of his swing, circled around the bishop while his victim turned as much to keep his staff facing the axeman.

However, the bishop did not anticipate the fighter swinging his axe upward, handle-first. It struck the bishop's right hand, which involuntarily threw

something

that was in it high into the air at an odd angle and out of sight.

The bishop panicked. The first thing he did was take hold of his staff with both hands and use its butt end to pummel the axefighter in the rib cage. As the fighter fell backward, the bishop looked up and saw a dracoknight flying in his general direction. There was no more time to waste. The bishop raised his staff, and vanished in a pillar of light as soon as an intricate magic circle beneath him finished drawing itself.

Only one groundling and one patrolling dracoknight saw any of this. None of them had any idea that something flew out of the bishop's hand. But resting in a pile of brush just inside the treeline, a medallion was lying neglected. It continued to burn with an unearthly glow that danced and twisted in the most subtle of air currents.

The laguz neither use nor need weapons or magic. They, the halfbeasts, use their bodies against their foes. Armed with claw and fang, there is no room for the weak amongst them as they very personally rip their enemies apart and roar in triumph.

One such laguz was watching the battle from behind. She held her right hand limp in the air, its crude bandage threatening to unravel on its own. Waves of pain radiated up her shoulder as she tried to keep control of herself. But as she watched the fighting before her, she felt something deep within herself well up.

Hatred... fury... and a selfless will to see justice done.

These Daeins, clad in black armor, were her enemy three years ago. These humans persecuted, enslaved, tortured, and killed her kind as a matter of cleansing. They were the reason the Gallians were rarely seen outside the deep forests of their country. Daein was the country that was found to have experimented on the laguz to turn them feral, breaking their minds to channel them as expendable weapons.

Seeing the same black armor from that same country standing up to subvert the course of justice and revive that way of life was more than she could bear. She glanced at her hand dismissively and began to grit her teeth, instantly overwhelmed with an unnatural desire to kill everything that reminded her of the generations of misery her kind had known.

Lyre was keeping an eye on her injured sister, though she too was barely resisting the compulsion to mercilessly slaughter those who shared kinship with her ancient enemies. When she saw Lethe transform, Lyre screamed with all her soul as her sister ran forward into the fray. She tried to give chase, but she was grabbed from behind by Captain Ranulf and held to the ground. Ranulf himself was shouting aloud, but Lyre couldn't understand what he was saying, so loud was the din swimming through her mind. In those moments, lying prone in the snow, Lyre began to cry at the realization that that may have been the last time she would see her sister.

The battle had raged for hours now, and the Apostle's Army was steadily pulling ground from the Daein lines. There seemed to be an unusual lack of fatigue from both sides, though. The morale of the Daein army showed no sign of faltering even as the laguz of the Apostle's Army had shown a remarkable lack of self-preservation. It seemed as if more and more people

wanted

to kill and be killed than ever before, even as neither army

needed

to do so. The meaning of life was all too apparent by the scattered corpses hurdled by the living soldiers-turned-butchers stained with the blood of their fellow man.

And yet, it wasn't enough.

King Tibarn himself wanted nothing less than to sit on the sidelines. He stood out as a giant among the hawks, a terrible harpy whose bloody cries heralded death for all those near him. As he hovered over a fresh patch of fallen Daeins, he used his sharp eyes to see where he should attack next. A Daein warrior, seeing the hawk king so close, readied a crossbow with shaking arms as he took aim at the monstrous creature.

Tibarn saw that warrior long before he ever fired, and held his wing over his face. The crossbow's bolt flew blindingly fast toward Tibarn, but stopped short between his feathers. The fearsome hawk king gave the avian equivalent of a chuckle as he stared the arrowhead down for an instant before dropping it harmlessly to the ground. He then swooped up and dove for the hapless warrior, dragging him seven yards by the skin of his forehead.

It wouldn't be fair to say that Tibarn was not enjoying himself... Yet there was only mild pleasure in this kind of small fry. The hawk king began to flap his wings and start searching. If there was anything holding this army together, it would be someone stronger. Perhaps they would be more interesting entertainment? Tibarn cawed and began to fly over the Daein ranks, looking for someone who could sate his urge for a real fight.

Judging from how his absence started to become noticeable after a few hours, perhaps he found one.

War is a terrible thing, even for creatures that are bred for it and seasoned through years of training. In both the outnumbered Daein army and the demoralized Apostle's Army, the stress of the fighting and hatred was showing through clearly on everyone's faces, both sides desperately hoping this could be the end. For many, though, that desperation was overpowered by a sheer paralyzing stress that everything they stood for was about to fall apart, and that they would die in vain in the snowy fields.

Some of the laguz triumphed in this kind of environment, such as King Tibarn. Captain Ranulf, on the other hand, was a more considerate soul, and the pounding in his head was starting to break his psyche as he tried to keep himself focused while in the fray. It wasn't enough that his sensitivity to the anxiety in the atmosphere seemed unusually sharp. It wasn't enough that his soldiers were throwing themselves on the pyre of war's sacrifice. It wasn't even enough that he had to personally restrain one of his own from running to her death after failing to do so with another. Ranulf tried to make it to the cover of a patch of trees before untransforming, but couldn't bring his body to do it. As he reverted to standing on two legs, he slowly pushed himself to walk forward, hoping for some kind of break. He only got halfway there before a dracoknight landed before him. Ranulf didn't even have the presence of mind to think about running as the black-clad soldier took aloft and aimed to plant his lance through the laguz's shoulder.

As Ranulf lay prone on the snow waiting to finally lose consciousness, he wondered what could possibly make all of this, any of this all right. His thoughts snapped to Ike... As long as Ike lived, things would somehow work out. Ranulf knew it instinctively.

He didn't have the energy to smile.

King Pelleas's cape twisted and warped in the crisp winter air as he started to sweat a little. He had been searching the back lines for his general, the Maiden of Dawn, for a solid fifteen minutes. But, nobody knew where she had gone. Neither Micaiah nor her companion Sothe seemed to be on the battlefield at all.

It was as if they had simply disappeared.

The thought of being abandoned, at first a fleeting notion thrown about in a panic, was starting to weigh heavily on the King of Daein. He knew painfully well who the real force driving the army was - and he knew just as painfully well that it wasn't him. He began to shudder a little bit. He knew that he was just a pawn in this war, one whose usefulness was shortly to be outlived. Was he also a piece for Micaiah to manipulate? Had everyone he had known and trusted really been lying to him all this time?

Pelleas looked down at the mark on his arm, and then to the tome of dark sorcery he held in his hand. At this point, the truth didn't matter. He trusted in Micaiah's plan, if not the person making it. And he knew - or at least he believed - that it was time for him to play the part of a disposable chess piece. He, Last King of Daein.

Pelleas kept his voice as level as he could as he drew the light from the air in front of him to form a corrosive mass, a blight upon all those who look at it. His resolve was hardened. This was his chance to live as he deserved or die as he deserved.

Sanaki, the supreme leader of Begnion.

In spite of being a child, she quickly grew to understand the intricacies of a life at court. How her every step and every word were scrutinized, and how the slightest lapse could result in resounding political consequences. How she maintained a network of spies to ensure that she could see through the lies and the omissions of her senators. How she was, no matter what, always the face of Begnion. In other words, in spite of her impulsive nature, she was always very thoroughly careful.

Yet in this final battle, she couldn't keep still. She couldn't watch her friends and Holy Guards fight and die in her name while she stayed far away with the caravan. Yet she also knew that they would never, never let her come close to the battle. They had all pledged their lives to ensuring her safety. It would be, in a sense, throwing THEIR lives away if any harm were to come of her.

But she went anyway.

As she made her way toward the staging area, she started to feel progressively more agitated. She was not terribly opposed to the IDEA of combat, but wouldn't have deigned to take part in it here if she didn't feel so strongly concerned about her friends. When she finally started to reach the blood-stained snow of the Apostle's Army - HER army - back lines, she started to become terribly nauseous. But, she kept pressing forward. She wanted to see someone, anyone. Someone she knew. Someone she could support. As she kept moving forward, she found herself progressively becoming unaware of where she was going. She kept searching for the white and black armor of her Holy Guards... She had already forgotten how her presence on the battlefield would alarm them, throw them into a panic, put them in mortal danger as they would throw themselves in front of her.

Sanaki let out a squeal as her face pressed against something... unusual. She looked up and saw that she had walked into the flank of a war horse. On its back was a man in black armor holding a spear. She saw the horse buck as the soldier took aim, and... just like that, the small Empress, hope of Begnion's reconstruction, became another needless casualty of this pointless, endless war.

A strange figure gazed out on the battlefield with one piercing eye. Daein was falling. This was not going to be her battle to win.

...at least, not without her input.

Queen Nailah relaxed as she felt herself transform. Within a few moments, she had seamlessly converted to laguz form. She was only standing at a third of her previous height, but she still had a distinct presence as a very, very large white wolf. Her lone uncovered eye darted around as it looked for where to go next. The wolf's face looked intelligent, but something about its mouth had a very distinct malice to it.

Somewhat to her left about thirty yards away, two pegasus knights were picking off a Daein soldier whose mount had been injured. With a lithe speed unlike anything anyone would expect from Daein, the white wolf closed the distance between herself and the murder and jumped up on one of the winged horses. She raked into the pegasus with her claws while she used her teeth to cleave its hapless rider's arm. It was the kind of bite that she knew would bleed her victim to death. In that same movement, she springed off of the first pegasus and jumped toward the other one before it could even land. Nailah dug her claws in for balance and swung her whole body around to knock its rider to the ground. Though this second rider didn't move before Nailah jumped on top of her, the white wolf tore the skin off of her neck to ensure that she would not survive.

Too easy. The white wolf howled in triumph.

That was probably a bit too much like getting carried away with herself. Some Falcoknights saw the lethal laguz leader on the field and flew away. "So much the better. They could live a while longer."

Within twenty minutes, Nailah had worked her way toward the center of the battlefield. She had lost count of how many people she had torn through, but it had to number fifty or so. She spied in a curious corner of an embankment an injured man moaning in pain. Looking at the massive gash in his torso, he didn't seem to have much longer for the world no matter what. In her own way, Nailah had her compassion, and fifty-one wasn't such a glamorous number. She quickly loped over and lunged for his throat. He would not suffer long. It wasn't even something she thought much about.

Before she could consider her next move, Nailah found herself involuntarily howling in pain. She had unwittingly wandered into a circle of a half dozen mages, each with tomes of Elfire ready to drain, and on cue they had begun chanting in the ancient language. Pillars of fire materialized and centered on the wolf queen, with each blast singing her fur until her beautiful white coat had turned to an ashen color. The pain was more intense than anything Nailah had ever felt. She laid down as she hoped for this hell on earth to stop. She knew there was no way, no reason she should ever have to die by burning. Not except in a trap like this. Nailah's loathing was palpable in her deepest core even as she bore the brunt of a storm of flames that was now melting her nerves and bringing her pain that shouldn't ever be inflicted on a living creature.


At some point, it all stopped. Nailah was just a corpse, completely blackened and hardly distinguishable from the sable scorch mark she was lying on. The mages, themselves deathly afraid of the creature they had just murdered, finally started to breathe in again. They intently watched the wolf queen's prone body as if she would suddenly come back to life. They stayed where they were for one agonizing minute just staring. Eventually, they started to turn away. Some of them were compulsively shuddering from the thought of what they had just done.


As the crunching sounds of footsteps started to fade, Nailah's one eye opened very, very slowly.



Eventually, Nailah's body - still transformed - was found in a bank of soothing snow. But so too were the bodies of exactly six of Begnion's best mages, their violently mauled figures strewn over a sixty-yard radius.

Somewhere in the back of the Daein army camp, out of earshot from most, two young people were having a heated conversation.

"It's useless. There is no way we can win this battle at all." That was the slightly shorter one, the one with golden hair and a very sturdy-looking bow. "We need to get out of here, or we're going to die."

"Leo, get ahold of yourself! We're not going to die, and how do you know that we're not going to win? We need to--"

"We're NOT going to win and we're NOT going to live to see the end of this unless we desert. Why is that so hard for you to understand?!" Leonardo was frighteningly close to yelling, an unsettling contrast from his normal demeanor. "We were fools to even think we had a chance against an army of this caliber."

"Shut up and get ahold of yourself, Leo! Listen to yourself, talking about deserting. Micaiah has never steered us wrong, and she wouldn't throw us into a battle we couldn't win! All you have to do is--"

"Where IS Micaiah, Edward? I haven't seen her for hours. If an army's general disappears for hours, it means--"

"It means," said a different voice, "that it's up to us to have faith in her."

This was an older man, albeit barely outside the descriptor of "young people". His rugged facial hair and tall stature made Leonardo and Edward look like the children they may have been at one time. "Edward's right. There's no reason to stop trusting Micaiah now. We've come a long way since we were runaways in Nevassa, and she played a big part in that."

Leonardo couldn't help but protest. "But this isn't anything like that any more! We came into this war because we were her friends. If she's gone, do we have any reason to be here?"

Edward pounced. "Why do you have to be so self-serv--"

"That's enough, Edward." The taller man, Nolan, turned to Leonardo. "We could desert, but where would that leave us? We would be back in Nevassa, living on the run again, as if none of this had ever happened. But this is a fight for the future of Daein. This is a fight so that we won't ever have to go back to being street rats. Micaiah is fighting here because she has hope for all of us. Don't you understand? This is for the future - the nation's, and ours."

Nolan leveled his gaze at the young archer. "Now, whatever happens, we're all in this together. If you want to quit now, we'll go with you." Nolan turned his head. "Right, Edward?"

Edward maintained a sullen look at no one in particular. Nolan returned his eyes to Leonardo. Leonardo looked like he was steeling himself to pet a spider.

"...I'm outvoted. Let's... go through this together."

Nolan patted Leonardo on the back. "I promise you we'll get through this together."

During the Mad King's War, some of Daein's strongest and most renowned warriors fought and died in Ashnard's twisted campaigns. After three years of subjugation at the hands of Begnion's occupying forces, almost none of those who made Daein the continent's strongest military force were left. But at the height of Daein's liberation efforts, one such figure returned.

The Black Knight. Once one of the Four Riders of Daein; his brutal strength, raw skill, and immense fortitude could only be described as inhuman. A dark horse in the King's court who gave no illusions about what sort of danger he was to anyone around him, he was described as the only man King Ashnard trusted to perform his most heinous tasks. Showing no sign of a name, identity, or clear ulterior motive, the Black Knight was quite possibly the most terrifying figure in Daein's mythos. After personally assassinating Greil, he became Ike's arch-nemesis. Ike reportedly defeated the Black Knight in single combat during the Mad King's War, yet Sir Knight was spotted at the height of Daein's revolution by the side of the Maiden of Dawn. What manner of vengeful spirit is this Knight, that he may possess such brutal power and yet remain outside the realm of death?

Yet the Black Knight served no evident master except himself. Someone of his might might have been able to turn the tides of Daein's last hour on his own, impervious to the simple thrusts of claw and fang and far too skilled to be felled by the amateurish attacks of the two armies. Yet, he only chose to appear at this late stage of the battle. His enormous form apparated over a magic circle near Daein's camp, and the Knight simply marched forward, holding his golden sword at the ready.

Only a few Crimean soldiers and a couple of Tigers tried to lunge at the Knight. The Black Knight parried the soldiers with such force that they flew aside, and the Tigers were struck with such great force that their fangs were severed. After that, even in spite of the chaos flooding everyone's minds, the battle seemed to keep a wide berth of the ebon-clad warrior. It seemed that the Black Knight had a sense of where he was going, specifically...

In spite of his gigantic armor, the Knight seemed to possess a penchant for moving stealthily. The halberdiers guarding Crimea's headquarters were quickly silenced, and the Black Knight entered a gaudy tent. The woman inside didn't hear him coming.

"Make your peace with the goddess, Queen of Crimea."

Queen Elincia started and turned at the sound of the voice, and was only able to scream as she saw the sword Alondite brought down on her.

As the Black Knight stepped outside of the tent, two figures - close friends of the queen - immediately closed on the intruder. The Black Knight turned on the raven first, drawing his sword upward with such force that it tore one of her wings completely off. The other one, a falcoknight, turned as pale as a sheet and tried to flee, but the Black Knight brought his sword down with such force that the sheer impulse energy of the slash knocked her off of her mount, which proceeded to fly away.

The Black Knight stood in silence for a moment, and then let a magic circle draw itself around him. He was not seen again.

Day 7 has been put off by 24 hours. I apologize for the inconvenience.

A bitter wind started to blow as snow began to fall in large flakes over the battlefield. The lonely gray sky and its droning wind served as a chilling backdrop for two figures flying atop a dappled white horse - one in the Holy Guards' steely silver armor, and both with a pallor about their faces from the chill in the air and the desperate nature of their mission.

No fewer than ten minutes prior, a messenger had arrived for the Empress. Leanne, who was supposed to be guarding the Medallion, had gone missing. And... so had the medallion.

And given the protracted and Pyrrhic nature of the battle, both of those meant that grave peril was imminent. So much so that Apostle Sanaki, herself, had to take charge.

Sanaki gripped her escort, a young Falcoknight named Penvo, as tightly as she could. She wanted to close her eyes and hold her head closer to Penvo's back, but she knew she had no choice but to keep a lookout. Ike... Skrimir... Sigrun. Those were the people she needed to find, no matter what. They needed to tell their units to stand down and retreat. Sanaki, trained from her youth to stay calm, was quaking at the thought of what could happen if they didn't. And this quivering, combined with the shivers drawn out by the cold and turbulence of the wind and the unsteady flapping of the steed's wings, made the little empress feel terrifyingly unstable on her mount. Which, of course, only made her tremble even more.

Sanaki frantically looked left, right, and forward, desperately hoping to find any sign of her generals. The truth is, she probably couldn't have found them if she wanted to, not in her mental state. She would have just as soon gotten so wrapped up in looking for them that finding them would have been out of her conscious ability.

Within ninety seconds of flying over the battlefield, Sanaki started to feel a dread, a foreboding, a panic. She wasn't going to be able to find them, or so she thought. She would fail in her mission to stop an unthinkable tragedy. That thought, the weight of the world, seized her mind and bewildered her. She had to find them. There was no other option. Or else--

A tremendous gust of wind rushed at Sanaki and Penvo from the side. Sanaki was lifted from where she was sitting, and held Penvo so tightly that she was pulled off of her pegasus as well. Sanaki had no way of seeing the bloodthirsty ruffians beneath her waiting for their prey...

King Pelleas was drenched in sweat and nauseated to the point of delirium. He had been forcibly carried to a post at the back of Daein's lines, where he was expected to command the remnants of his army. As if he could do that before. He was keenly aware of how his own loyal soldiers had him trapped on a temporary throne so he could be bombarded by reports of his nation being crushed before his eyes. It would have been overwhelming even in the best of circumstances, but in this dark hour... Pelleas could only make out fragments of the reports shouted at him. Even those he could understand, he couldn't possibly dwell on. Pelleas could only feel a very, very dark foreboding about how this battle would turn out, no matter what they were saying. Pelleas, intimately familiar with the dark arts, knew what a premonition was, and managed to become chilled even beyond the shivering cold of his sweat evaporating in the freezing air.

Pelleas was halfway brought out of his stupor by his eye catching the stunning white armor of one of his most trusted generals. Tauroneo, the man who had served two kings before him and was now his most loyal retainer, had entered the command tent. Pelleas was dimly aware that this was very likely to be a portent of ominous news, but all he could do was placidly note how stained Tauroneo's shield and leg braces were.

"Your Majesty", the elder general began. "The secondary front has collapsed and General Cawdor has fallen. I expect the divided Apostle's Army to merge in half an hour."

A simple, direct message - one conveying that the unthinkable was about to happen. Pelleas, in the back of his mind, knew that his hours were numbered. Yet his attention, as evidenced by his blank face and slight quiver, was on something quite different. Pelleas sensed that something even further beyond his imagination was imminent.

Pelleas was supposed to respond to his general's report. Instead, he started to shudder violently at something far greater.

A cavalcade of Crimean horsemen stormed toward the Apostle's Army forward camp. There was a definite sense of urgency amongst the legion of reinforcements - they had long ago realized that they were being diverted from the main staging area. In addition, many of them were quivering in foreboding that something

wrong

had occurred while they were away.

Ike and his deputy Titania quickly dismounted while General Skrimir halted and detransformed in front of the tent that was serving as the war room. What they saw stunned them into silence, as silently awaiting their arrival were four very despondent old friends. Janaff was convulsing at an inexorable sense of dread given that he was standing in the place of his king. Lady Lucia and Commander Sigrun both stood at a meek attention, but both of their eyes were bloodshot from the tears they would continue to weep were their composure not necessary at this hour. Kyza had completely lost his bearing and was openly weeping over the prone body of Captain Ranulf, whose hand he continued to hold in vain hopes of revival.

"By the goddess..." Titania mumbled. "What could possibly have happened here? How have we been routed...?"

Ike was already thinking ahead. "Soren. Where is Soren?"

As if on cue, Oscar slowly cantered around the tent on his horse. He dismounted, and then gingerly pulled a limp, severely bleeding figure from behind where he was sitting. Ike's quartermaster and dearest friend could do nothing but maintain a look of frozen horror as he tried to call out for help with what strength was left in his small, bitter frame.

Now even Ike was consumed by quaking dread. He motioned to Oscar and Rhys. "Get Soren into that tent, quickly! Tend to his wounds!" As his subordinates hustled to save their friend, Ike bowed his head. "I never could have imagined the Daein army was capable of turning the battle around like this..."

Skrimir was shouting at Ranulf's body. "Come on... Get up! Gallia needs you!" He knew such efforts were futile, but that didn't stop him from trying. "No... Could this have been the work of the Maiden of Dawn?"

It was a thought none of them wanted to fathom, but all of them definitely had on their mind. Somehow, General Micaiah had completely and decisively defeated the Apostle's Army. And... Ike felt sick with every fiber of his being. "Sound the retreat. We've lost. I don't want to know what kind of damage we've taken, but we need to step back and assess what we need to do now."

Jill Fizzart, one of King Pelleas's most loyal retainers, entered King Pelleas's tent. "King Pelleas. The enemy reinforcements have arrived, but the Apostle's Army has sounded the retreat. What is your order?"

General Tauroneo's heart leaped. "Miracle of miracles... The battle is won!"

King Pelleas was shaking uncontrollably before, and this news didn't stop that at all. "........." "Let them retreat. We've done enough."

Tauroneo nodded. "I'll order our men to stand down, Your Majesty."

As Tauroneo exited the tent, Pelleas bowed his head. "Micaiah... Thank you."

The following day was eerily silent. The snowy weather had cleared away, and the birds' twittering seemed raucous over the abandoned snowfield where so many fallen soldiers laid in repose.

Titania was speaking with Ike. "I don't see the Daein army making any preparations to engage us again."

Ike shook his head to one side. "They don't have to. They were preferentially targeting our leaders. Without them, our army fell apart."

"But I know Tibarn at least was more than a match for the Daein army. How much ability do we have to continue?"

"It's... bad." This was a different voice.

"Soren! You shouldn't be moving. We'll take care of things while you rest."

Soren smiled faintly. "I'm fine, Ike. Thank you for your concern." The smile then vanished as Soren closed his eyes to recount what he had seen.

"King Tibarn is missing in action. Elincia was ambushed in her own tent. We don't know where Sanaki is, but shreds of her robe have been sighted in the middle of the battlefield. You saw Captain Ranulf."

"It can't be... All of them are gone?"

"It's worse than that. Their retainers are devastated. Sigrun has been involuntarily put to sleep, for instance."

Titania nodded. "She must feel personally responsible for what happened. I would be afraid of her hurting herself in despair too."

"What I'm saying is that we are in no position to fight. Our units' morale has been shattered."

Titania nodded again in rare agreement with the other tactician. "In addition, this campaign was all about restoring Sanaki to the throne of Begnion. Now that the Apostle is dead, this advance has no purpose."

Ike was still troubled by something. "What of the medallion? More than anything, that's what I'm concerned about."

Soren shut his eyes in what appeared to be disgust. "I don't know. It was supposed to be with Leanne, but she ventured onto the battlefield of her own volition. I suppose in that sense as well, we are better off not fighting."

Ike frowned. "Finding the medallion needs to be our first priority. I'll venture out--"

"...Excuse me, Commander Ike."

Everyone turned to enter the tent. Daein's dragonmaster Jill was standing outside the tent, bearing the livery of a messenger and being given some very dark looks by the tent's guards.

Jill nodded. "...It's been a while, Commander."

"Do you have a message from King Pelleas?"

"Yes. He wishes to negotiate. He will arrive at your camp in two hours."

Ike swung his arm in frustration. "Oh, sure. NOW he wants to negotiate."

"What should we do?" Titania queried. "I'm sure the proceedings will be rather unpleasant."

"We are in no position to refuse", Soren responded evenly. "We have nothing to gain by NOT hearing them out."

Ike turned to face Jill. "We accept. But I'm not looking forward to it."

Two hours later, King Pelleas and a cohort of guards arrived at the command tent for the Apostle's Army. Sigrun, Lucia, and the hawks had excused themselves, so the Apostle's Army was represented by Ike, Titania, Soren, and Skrimir. Conspicuously missing from the Daein contingent was their lead general, the Maiden of Dawn.

For a solid three minutes, both sides of the table stared at each other, sizing the other side up. Pelleas looked around furtively, hoping someone would begin the proceedings. When no one spoke, he shakily cleared his throat and began.

"Leaders of the Apostle's Army. I have come to negotiate a means by which we can be at peace with each other. I..."

Pelleas furtively turned his head in a most awkward manner. He had no idea how to say this next part.

"I... wish for the Apostle's Army to surrender to Daein. Following that... I... request an alliance between your army and mine to engage Begnion."

Skrimir ran for the other side of the table and was only barely able to stop himself from getting close enough that a fight would have broken out. "You cowardly human! You knew that we have been fighting Begnion all along!"

Ike called for Skrimir to stop, but Titania spoke up. "Skrimir has a good point. Why was Daein fighting alongside their former oppressor, only to now propose this alliance?"

The queen mother Almedha rose indignantly. "You have no right to question my son! You are the conquered. My son is mercifully offering to negotiate with you now."

Pelleas laid a hand on Almedha's shoulder. "It's all right, mother... I'll tell them."

"But... are you sure?"

"Yes, mother."

On the eve of the battle's end...

A man dressed in the raiment of a bishop was addressing the king of Daein. He was one of the highest of the Sainted, Vice-Minister Lekain of Begnion.

"I must say I'm impressed, King Pelleas. Not only have you managed to completely stop our treasonous rebel army, but you managed to kill that wench who falsely called herself the Apostle. Though, if it's not her, I do wonder who the real Apostle is... Why, she might even be your so-called 'Silver-Haired Maiden'. Wouldn't that be something?"

King Pelleas was nonplussed by the idea. "Senator, your business please."

"Oh, but think about it. Suppose the Apostle WERE found in Daein. You do know how influential the Apostle is, right? She could use all the resources Begnion could offer to uplift this wretched country into something worth calling a sovereign nation. My dear Pelleas, think of the possibilities!"

"I-I'm sorry. Could you tell me what you want a little more clearly?"

Lekain frowned. "Ah. Well, I suppose I'll let you ruminate on that prospect a bit. King Pelleas blanched. "...I can't do that. There are still so many of them left. In direct combat, we would all be routed."

Lekain walked over and placed his hand on Pelleas's shoulder. "Ah, but you understand. If they should rise again, they may come after Begnion. And if that happens, I would need to call on you again to defend us. So, it's really in both of our best interests to do so. And... you do know what it means if you decide not to act in our best interests."

Pelleas closed his eyes and mulled it over for a moment. Finally, he said: "I understand. I will offer to negotiate with the Apostle's Army leaders. However, while we are up close, I shall order my confidantes to assassinate them. Will that suffice?"

Lekain patted Pelleas's shoulder. "Did you just come up with that plan all by yourself? My boy, you are coming of age as a king! We shall see how it goes, at any rate."

Pelleas didn't respond. He couldn't keep the act up much longer.

Almedha cried out. "P-Pelleas! You weren't supposed to tell them that!"

"So, that's how it's going to be, huh?" Ike was standing up. "If it's a fight you want, I promise you will not leave this place alive."

Pelleas remained calm, as if he had rehearsed this a thousand times. "It's a good thing I don't want to fight, then." He took a deep breath. "I... Daein is bound by a blood pact to Begnion. Until now, we have followed the conditions of the pact in hopes of preserving Daein as a nation. But following Begnion's orders now would mean destroying the only people on the face of the continent who can stand up to the Senate. And that... That is why I want to strike now." Pelleas smiled. "Vice-Minister Lekain expects the Apostle's Army to be beaten. They wouldn't be able to handle a sudden push from our merged armies. Don't you agree?"

"You are in no position to teach us about strategy, boy." This was a growl coming from Soren's small frame, still covered in bandages. "First, you were stupid enough to sign a blood contract with Begnion. That in itself should make you think twice about anything you say being a good idea. Second, you do realize that you've managed to get half of our armies and most of our leaders killed, right? Begnion still has several sizeable and well-trained armies allied with the Senators. We are not likely to be a match for them. Third, Lehran's Medallion is still at large. Nobody is in any position to fight right now, or we will risk the goddess's wrath."

Pelleas was silent. But then a voice called from outside. "If it's Lehran's Medallion you're looking for..." It was Micaiah, walking into the tent as if oblivious to her surroundings, with Sothe following closely behind her. "I have it right here, in this pouch." The fabric covering seemed to be alight with blue fire, burning but not consumed. "...It is not good to fight. Not now, not for months. The seal on the medallion is far too close to breaking."

Ignoring what she had just said, everyone immediately asked a different question about who this woman was and where she had been. When everyone realized that they hadn't been heard, the room quieted down again. Micaiah continued. "There should be no war amongst all the nations. That is what we promised."

Sothe nudged the Maiden. "Micaiah, how do you--"

Micaiah completely ignored Sothe, turning to face outside the tent. "Come."

Kurthnaga, Ena, and Nasir entered the tent. Almedha blanched as she realized exactly what was about to happen. "No... No, you're not... You can't take me away! Not from my beloved Pelleas!"

Kurthnaga approached. "Almedha... Sister... It's time to return home."

Almedha staunchly refused. "No! I will never leave my son's side again. Not even if all of Goldoa demands it!"

Almedha was a tough woman, but she was also outnumbered. The three Goldoans sat behind her and waited patiently for the proceedings to be over to continue their coercion while Almedha fidgeted uncomfortably.

Micaiah turned to Skrimir. "The laguz armies have suffered terribly in this conflict. Return now to your countries."

Skrimir paused. This meant accepting defeat. But... "...I accept, tiny beorc. No more of my men's lives shall be taken by this conflict."

Pelleas turned to protest. Micaiah was giving away the army that he wanted to use against Begnion! But Micaiah was already speaking to Ike. "You are a mercenary, correct, Ike? I will work out the details with King Pelleas, but I would like to hire you to act as general once again for the remaining Crimean and Begnion units."

Ike shook his head. "No. We've lost a lot too. And we're done fighting this war. All the gold Daein can provide couldn't make us continue this travesty."

"Is that so, Ike? I don't think that's necessarily the case." Yet another new voice. This was... Prime Minister Sephiran of Begnion, casually striding into the war room. While some thoughts were fleeting toward what kind of security this tent had, a Senator could travel virtually wherever they liked without fear of reprisal. "Consider what would happen if you didn't continue. Without an apostle, the Senate is now free to rule Begnion as it pleases. And I do believe you know that their ultimate goal is to exterminate the laguz and subvert the beorc countries. Surely that's the worst outcome?"

"Yeah, that's bad. But that's not really our concern. We're mercenaries."

"A mercenary that refuses payment? I never thought I'd see the day, Ike. Listen. I will hire you to lead this joint army against the Senate. As I'm sure you're aware, I can pull quite a few strings to make it so that you can move unopposed much of the time. In other words, it won't be an impossible task."

"Huh. Well, that's that, but what about the medallion?"

Sephiran smiled involuntarily. "The... medallion? Oh, you mean Lehran's Medallion? ...If all of the countries are not at war, I think it should be fine. The fighting should be on a much smaller scale from now on."

Ike turned his head to face Titania, and then turned to face Soren. Both of them were expressionless. "We'll consider it."

Sephiran smiled. "Take your time."

Between Sephiran's offer and Pelleas's plea for urgency, Ike ultimately accepted his new commission as General of the remnants of the Apostle's Army. The next day was spent preparing dutifully for the lightning strike they would have to make through Begnion. In the meantime, though, Micaiah and Sothe returned to Castle Nox, where they paused to reflect on what had come to pass.

"...so in the end, we're fighting Begnion anyway. But we had to kill so many innocent people to get there. Is that what happened?"

Micaiah shook her head. "...yes. Yes."

"So, what was the point of it all? I mean, we could have just joined the Apostle's Army to start with."

"The blood pact would have triggered, Sothe. Daein would have been annihilated in the time it would have taken to course through Begnion. But this way, Daein is still alive, and we have a much better chance than we ever had of passing through Begnion. It's as I said before - every battle we win is another day Daein remains."

"...you know, if you look at it objectively - we were going against the best of Crimea, Begnion, Gallia... Even Phoenecis. Not only did we hold our own, we WON."

Micaiah laughed. "You know General Ike would be proud."

"No, I don't think he sees it that way."

"He will eventually, Sothe. And, just think - we're finally on the right side of this war again."

"About time."

"It's okay to be happy about it, Sothe."

That night, Sephiran was quietly standing over where what was found of Sanaki was buried. His lips were moving, but none could make out what he was saying. It was clear even at a distant glance that the normally placid Prime Minister was overwhelmed by deep sorrow, though.

"...Duke Persis."

Sephiran started. He turned around to see Micaiah standing behind him. "...Micaiah, Maiden of Dawn. How may I be of service?"

"Why did you lie, Sephiran?"

The customer-service smile crashed off of Sephiran's face. "My child, what do you mean?"

"When you said that the medallion would be okay with this new war... That was a lie, wasn't it?"

Sephiran stayed quiet. Micaiah continued anyway. "Master Sephiran, I... can see your heart. It's covered in despair... in darkness. And it grew darker as you said that line yesterday. Why did you lie?"

Sephiran opened his mouth to answer, but as he looked at the Silver-Haired Maiden and parsed through what he had just heard, he was struck by a realization that took his preprepared excuse from him, leaving his mouth agape.

Understanding of the Glow:

These are the mechanics governing the counter.
*Each real-time day during the Day, the counter will increase by 1. This does not apply to the first day of each Day.
*Each time someone dies, the counter will increase by 1.
*Each time multiple people die simultaneously, the counter will increase triangularly. (So, if two people die simultaneously, the counter will go up by a total of 3. If three people die simultaneously, the counter will go up by a total of 6. Etc.)
*Each time someone dies from a country that has not yet experienced a loss, the counter will increase by an additional 1.
*The counter is guaranteed to go up by at least 5 each Day based on time.
*While you are alive, every other day the counter will increase by an additional 1. This does not reset with each Day, so if for instance Day 1 ends on the ninth day, the additional 1 will come into play on the first day of Day 2.
*While you are alive, the counter is guaranteed to go up by at least 7 each Day based on time.
*If you are lynched, the counter will freeze for the next Night and the next Day.

Creiddylad:

One should never underestimate a mage with all the power and contacts the world can offer. You can choose a player to kill at any time, and it will be done with extreme Light magic pizazz. However, after it happens the first time people will figure out that standing around in the middle of giant ominous magic circles is a bad idea, so this trick will only work once.

Matrona:

This gaudy staff is fragile, but has ludicrous healing potential. Once during the game you may target a player with this to stop all kills, roleblocks, or other harmful actions from taking place against them that Night. In addition, if they are under any lingering effects, this will get rid of those too.

Sow Madness:

The god of chaos sleeps restlessly inside the Medallion. Once during the game during the Day you may press the Fire Emblem upon someone other than yourself. Beginning that Night, they will go berserk and become forced to kill each Night. This is separate from factional kills where applicable, and this will prevent them from using any other actions. This may not work on characters who are highly attuned to Order, such as yourself.

Faithfulness to the Goddess:

You know that Micaiah is in this game, and you suspect Sanaki is in this game as well. Both of them are your direct descendants, and you refuse to harm either of them. Any action (except Matrona) that you take against either of them will fail, and if either of them attain a lynching majority of votes, your vote will not count (thereby potentially requiring them to take one more vote to lynch).

Regardless of whether you are still in the game at the time, you win if the counter reaches 85. Note that the battle will end if the Town or the Mafia fulfills their Win Condition before then, and your efforts will have been in vain. If the counter reaches 85 at the same time that another faction fulfills their Win Condition, you will be the sole winner anyway.

I've wanted to run a Radiant Dawn setup for years now (Mafia of Order doesn't count), so this kind of flavor has been in the works for a long time. Part III-Endgame was probably the most usable part of the game for a Mafia context (aside from mass-berserking flavor from MoO), so etc. What happened to fit beautifully with that scenario was a mechanic I lifted from Phables: Death Note Mafia (let us never speak of that game again) - one where the scum win only if certain players are dead. I really liked the idea, but hated the implementation in that game, so I decided to try to redeem it.

To that end, the game was intended to be one giant mass battle where the Daeins (scum) were hopelessly outnumbered and underpowered but only had to kill select Townies to win; the Apostle's Army (Town) had overwhelming power and numbers but lost that advantage as time went on; and a counter that would ensure that the game never reached a true endgame. (Read that again - this game was, by design, not supposed to ever reach LyLo. THAT is a cool twist if it works.)

That counter is the other mechanic that was central to the setup. Towns can't find scum (let alone five scum) in general, and adding a time limit to the game just made it even less likely that it would happen. So, the Town was relatively overpowered in this game in addition to the scum being fairly gimped. There was an armful of investigative-type roles, too. To balance that out, the power roles started to go away as time went on. No explanation was given, because budding chaos is exactly what this setup is about.~

I'll admit, I'm not satisfied with how ability addition/subtraction worked out in this game. But, given that mod confirmation was already a HUGE deal in this game

thanks to that mechanic, sending out more mod notes (e.g. to danakillsu "Your Vigilance no longer works") would have made it even worse.

The setup in terms of role design was typical of me, and I was extremely disappointed at how outguessable it became. I would hate for this to be the game where my setups jump the shark... I'm going to need to really start breaking out of my meta if I'm going to keep running games worth playing.

Flavor is very flavorful and very relevant to the setup and etc. I give credit to The Children of Hurin for getting me interested in running such a flavorful game. The fact that the counter was supposed to explode at 80 (I found out the hard way that size tags go up to 400, not 300...) is common knowledge for anyone who has played the game, and I'm quite surprised that nobody seemed to point that out until very late. I mean, I said "no deadlines per Day"; did you think there wouldn't be a CATCH or something? Well, whichever, the scary blue number was at least scary and blue and number, which I guess means it served its purpose.

Images in vote counts were chosen at random. I restricted it to just FE9/FE10 after I drew Matthew (FE7) the first time. I am so bad at flavor.

The formula behind the counter was balanced on a razor's edge, and I spent a lot of time trying to ensure that it wouldn't run so quickly that Sephiran would almost certainly win or too slowly so that Sephiran had no chance at all. Luckily, this setup only needs to be run once, and it worked out fine this time. <.<

Overall this setup did exactly what I wanted it to! but I would never have predicted the path the game took to get there. I think it turned out as well as I could have asked.

With all due respect to Lady Lambdadelta, Daein win was the least interesting in terms of endgame flavor. I was holding on to this image for so long~

As for the play in this game... Well, it seems to make sense in a game flavored around friends hating and killing each other and basically being disgusting human beings. I understand that people are asses to each other for no evident reason and need to be called out, but when it goes on for tens of pages in a Mafia context, that's a sign that the way a lot of people interact with a lot of other people is really dysfunctional. This game was very, very hard to keep up with on some days. I really do hope that everyone works out their differences on their own time, because I like liking people without having to worry about choosing sides.

The triple modkill fortunately occurred in the one game ever where modkilling three people wouldn't actually hurt the integrity of the setup. I'm not pleased that it had to happen, and I acknowledge that it occurred because TrollMod was too clever by half. I do apologize for my part in it, much the same way as I do for the error in SpyreX's Role PM.

With that said, I was still very tempted to modkill Katsuki for receiving and passing on that message from kkb. <_<

Anyway, it's over, and let it be over.

However, if your hand is forced during the Day, or if multiple people try to kill you at Night, you will need to retreat and leave the Medallion behind. Or in other words, you have one-shot immunity to Night-kills.

: Your serrated blade, less a sword than a saw, is designed to shred your victims into chunks of dog food. This is your factional kill.

Awaken Chaos

: Rather than use your factional kill, you may press the Fire Emblem onto another player. With a few exceptions, this will cause them to become consumed by chaos and turn them into compulsive Vigs (preventing them from performing any other action).

Sacrifice Self

: The first time you are to die by any means - including the lynch - you will instead passively use Awaken Chaos on yourself. This will take up your action for the Night, even if you are lynched. Basically, you are one-shot deathproof. If you are killed by someone whom you have turned into a compulsive Vig, this ability will be bypassed and you will die in one hit.

Fascination with the Glow

: These are the mechanics behind the counter:
*Players may gain or lose abilities based on how high the counter is, as many characters will change their nature due to the increasing chaos.
*The counter will always go up by at least 3 during the Day as a result of time elapsed.
*The counter will increase with each person who dies.
*The counter will increase more quickly if someone dies from a country who has not yet suffered a loss.
*The counter will increase more quickly if a "main character" dies.
*The counter will increase more quickly if multiple players die simultaneously.

You win when the counter reaches 85, even if you are dead when that happens. However, you or any character you consume in chaos must be alive when the counter reaches 50. Be careful - if any other faction fulfills their Win Condition before then, the battle will end, and with it your hopes of breaking the seal on the Fire Emblem - and thus you will lose.

The original Tarhalindur role. Originally the third party was an SK. However, with an SK the number of kills was so high that the game was very likely to reach true LyLo. Plus this role was terribly easy to win with. So, I axed it for something more Survivor-like.

OMG Janaff. I removed this role at the last minute because I decided Town already had overwhelming power on its side and didn't need another Masonizable Hawk/Tracker. It got replaced with Lethe, which, etc.

Soren was actually STRONGER than the Flavor Cop because of how strong country was correlated with alignment. danakillsu's role is more of an analog to the Maf.Kitties Flavor Cop.

all we had was an ambiguous colored number that was getting bigger. you can extrapolate various nebulous things from this but we had no where near the amount of information the scumhad on the setup to be competitive and this my biggest gripe about the whole affair.

The number wasn't really that ambiguous with a bit of flavor knowledge (which a bunch of people had). This scenario is taken right out of the game almost wholesale and without modification, and this particular Chapter ends when the counter reaches 80. As for the scum having knowledge about it, they had Nailah's information ability "Chaos Premonition" but really that was about it. The odd mumblings that people were getting Roleblocked due to the number showed that

As for Town not knowing who the targets were... hint, it's probably not Kyza or Rolf. I'm just saying.
