Thirteen strangers have arrived as guests on the S.S. Vendetta, a luxury cruise liner set to sail the world in 60 days. They hail from all different walks of life, with different stories and different reasons for their pleasure seeking. But some are harboring a secret: their own murderous intent. This is my first try at modding, and I could use your help! If you notice mistakes of any kind, post in the thread something bolded like “

”. Please use your best judgment in whether or not what you want to tell me should be public knowledge before telling me in-thread. You can also PM me to be safe.

DON’T BE A JERK.
It should be a surprise to no one that forum mafia gets really unpleasant sometimes, however - that’s no excuse to be disrespectful towards other players. Excessive cursing or derogatory attacks targeting another player that bear no relevance to the game are grounds for a modkill.

[05]
BE ACTIVE.
Prods will be sent after 48 hours of thread inactivity. Players must respond within 24 hours of a prod before replacement. If you require a 3rd prod, I will begin searching for a replacement immediately.

[06]
Day 1 will be 3 WEEKS LONG, after that Day phases are 2 WEEKS LONG. Night phases are 48 HOURS LONG
. All actions not submitted by deadline will be left unused. I will extend the deadline at my own discretion depending on either severe inactivity or excessive replacements.

[07]
A single “BAH” post
is allowed from dead players. After that please stay dead.

[08]
RULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
Just because I haven’t covered something thoroughly here, does not give you the right to exploit it – use your common sense. Please let me know of any changes I should make.

This game follows the
Mini Normal
standard for games, meaning it’s an original 13p closed setup with only normal roles. That means no cults, jesters, or lynchers! YAY! I will not deliberately lie to you about anything in game, though I cannot promise you complete information, either.


There is guaranteed to be at least one Vanilla Townie role, and as a sample, Role PMs will look something like this:

All through the first night of the
Vendetta
’s voyage, the seas are peaceful. The wind, however, is unusually chilly for September, and only promises to grow colder during the rest of the trip. The cold drove all the passengers indoors early in the evening; even the nightwatchman, assigned to patrol the decks, retreats to the bar for a drink and several quiet hours to himself.

A calm, wide sea. Too kind, too gentle.

Suddenly a shriek is heard from somewhere on the ship, startling its inhabitants awake. One by one the groggy guests open their doors into the corridors, beginning to gather and ask what is going on. As the shouts continue, the quizzical glances turn alarmed. The group clambers up to the deck to investigate the disturbance, trying to locate the source of the commotion.

Fresh traces of blood are discovered at starboard side, just outside the officers’ quarters. No one knows who it belongs to. Panic quickly begins setting in.

Suddenly, somebody exclaims in horror: “There!” They lean over the railing, pointing at waters below. Floating in the ship’s gentle wake is the broken body of

You watch helplessly as the gently lapping waves carry the captain further and further away from the side of the ship. Two crew members run off to check the radio room, only to report that all telecommunication systems are inexplicably down. The crew has been instructed to continue on to the nearest major port city in case of emergency. However, with the captain dead and communications down, the crew cannot reliably determine how far the
Vendetta
veered off course during the night. It will take some time to reorient – time that you do not have, considering there is a murderer on the loose.

The passengers begin to slip into a tense paranoia. However, it’s soon clear that they haven’t completely lost their wits. Together they go through the ship manifest and reason that whoever is responsible for the crime must be among their number.

Luckily, the culprit has nowhere to go. Since everyone is gathered out on the deck already, they will decide then and there who to put to death for the crime.

The darkest hour is just before the dawn, and as the accusations begin flying, the sun peeks over the horizon and starts its climb into the sky…

It was a sleepless night for many.

The next morning, you find a tiny, white-faced stewardess standing outside in the hallway. Several of you attempt to question her, but the woman seems to have gone mute with fright. She gestures to a door left ajar at the end of the passage, hand trembling.

A brave few of your group pass inside wordlessly. A man in a pristine white bathrobe lies wordlessly on his side with his back to the door, looking to be in a very peaceful sleep. You inch closer, waves of dread churning inside you.

There is a scorched black mark right above his ear, with congealed blood appearing to have oozed down his neck. They must have died instantly.

Even though you truly have no reason to believe so, you think today might go differently.

The circumstances of the night before have given you a ray of hope.

But maybe that hope was twisted to complacency somewhere along the way, because it was a long and tedious day. Without a cloud in the sky, your group has barely any respite from the sun beating full force through the morning and afternoon. Perhaps it is the persistent rays that suck all energy out of you, for even though there is an important item on today's agenda

, people are barely talking. Some even slip in and out of consciousness from the heat. You're worried you can't take any more of this. You have to find a way to end it, and soon.

So by the time the sun begins slipping beneath the horizon, the group has regained a small sense of urgency. You have finally decided the next to die.

Full of righteousness and indignation, you surround him swiftly. He is tired from the day’s proceedings and can barely keep from fainting. So he doesn't resist. The condemned quickly disappears underneath a trample of limbs. In a moment they are lying on the ground with their neck broken.

And of course, like you expected... there were plenty of bumps in the night. You were far too terrified to leave your room and investigate where exactly they were coming from; after all,
the killer could be at work as these very thoughts occur to you
. You woke up at one point during the night in a restless fit, and in your brief moment of consciousness you hear something strange.

Or at least, you could have sworn you heard it.... A frenzied ragtime tune coming from the lounge at this ungodly hour?

You nervously chalk it up to your overactive imagination and force yourself back to sleep, burying your senses under the warm covers, lulled away by the slow movements of the ship.


At dawn, your group hurriedly rises. There is more work to be done. You begin banging relentlessly on suite doors until each one has been thrown open and the entire group has seemingly emerged out in the corridor.

Once all the suites are cleared, you stagger with relief to see zero corpses in the cabins.

“Maybe we
can
find them before they kill us,”
somebody blurts out, reassured. The rest of you aren't so sure, and remain quiet. There is some attempt to make small talk -
"How did you sleep?"
and
"I hope it's not too hot out today"
- but mostly you're all lost in your own thoughts as you ascend together to the main deck.


Before you begin the day's proceedings, someone wises up to perform a routine headcount.

There is one of you missing!


You do a quick recount - it's not a mistake. Rather than go around the group - deliberately, one-by-one, double-checking with the ship manifest - in order to determine whose face is absent, the passengers fly into a panic.

Barely thinking, you divide into small groups to sweep the ship for the missing passenger, already knowing what you will find, but hoping -
still hoping
- that you might find them before it's too late... For all you know their body has already been lost to the sea...


After overturning the restaurant and bar searching for your lost member, your group enters the lounge. Its sleek modern décor is all in perfect order, but over by the grand piano there is a limp, huddled mass. Your stomach drops as you approach.

You find the poor victim slumped over in an awkward position - not quite kneeling, not quite standing. Their head has been forcefully wedged under the instrument’s lid, cracked open and bleeding onto the white keys. Their attacker must have slammed the instrument’s cover down on their skull repeatedly… who knows how many times?

This was no shot through the skull or the heart like the night before. Your friend suffered tonight.

What a horrible way to die.

The discussion seems to make its way in slow circles throughout the day. After various people are accused, the group slowly begins to settle on one as the culprit. She tries to defend herself, but the will of the many is too much for even her to overcome. One by one the others finger her as the person to die today. As the pressure mounts

begins to falter and finally cracks.

Before anyone can stop her,
Plum
has leapt to her feet and pulled out a gun hidden inside her coat. After a quick scan of the lynch mob around her, the infiltrator raises the gun to her temple.

”Mazel tov,”
Plum
says evenly, without a shred of hesitation. The rest of you are too shocked to react –
why isn’t she aiming at any of you? she’s not trying to take anybody down with her?


Before anybody can spring themselves into motion, she pulls the trigger. She is dead before she hits the floor with a final, sickening thud.

You lament that she didn't give up any more clues before she died - whether she had partners, for instance, and if so - how many.

Like with the last scum you found, you decide to search the corpse thoroughly. You’re a little more reassured than last time, though. Going through her clothes pockets, you find several extra bullet cartridges and an elegant silk scarf. After you are done, you condemn the corpse to the sea, carrying the burden across the deck and heaving her overboard.

The search for evidence leads back to her room, but yields nothing out of the ordinary.

had apparently brought nothing aboard the ship with her, besides the clothes on her back and the intent to kill.

You say a small prayer of gratefulness to no one in particular. You’re glad the scum didn’t have the chance to use up the rest of the bullets.

No one’s congratulating themselves on the successful lynch today, however – it does seem like a small burden has been lifted from the group. You thought there might be a chance that you had eradicated all the scum, but even then how would you know for sure?

You take a leisurely dinner out on the deck, trying to ignore the circumstances and enjoy the sea air. What you are really doing is avoiding the retreat indoors, which would quickly be followed by night, which would quickly be followed by… more death?

You’d have to wait and see.

When you finally do get back to your cabin, you decide to drag the ornate wooden armoire behind your door. Just in case. If the scum decide to visit you tonight, the obstacle might not hold them off for long, but it would at least buy you some time. And that could make all the difference.

The furniture is relentlessly heavy. After it’s moved, you’re so drained that you let yourself fall into bed without another thought.

You sleep perfectly soundly, running through dreams upon dreams, none of which you remember when you wake up.

Hours later, you are rudely woken by a sharp rapping on your door, followed by someone trying to turn the knob on the door. Your heart starts with panic, until the person on the other side calls out, “
No sleeping in! C’mon, what are you playing at? It’s time to get this over with.”


You laugh to yourself quietly. Of course scum don’t announce themselves before entering a victim’s room. This whole thing has turned you silly.

Quite insane, actually.


With another laborious effort, the armoire is moved out of the way and you emerge from your room. You’re apparently the last to have risen, and the others are all nerves and impatience.

You fall into step as the group heads to the main deck. This is a morbid routine by now. You begin thinking of possible ways this day might go.

As you surface on the deck, the sunlight is harsh and in your eyes. You’re blind, thrown off for a moment.

Then you hear a loud thud.

Then another. Faces dissolve in panic.

Yes, with this voyage – you can always assume the worst. You are right to assume the worst.


You look overboard to determine the location of the foreboding sound; perhaps there is something hitting the sides of the ship? Some stray flotsam, perhaps?

No, there’s nothing there.

One by one eyes are cast skyward. Subconsciously you know what the sound is before you even see the body. It hangs by the main mast, clumsily swaying in the wind.

The rain began that morning, shortly after you had retrieved last night's body from the masts. At first the droplets were easy enough to ignore, and you decided to wait it out, not wanting the weather to get in the way of the deliberations. But by midday the skies had been rent open, assailing the ship with brutal rainfall.

Your group hurriedly seeks refuge in the lounge (though you remember that there was a death here only the other night, you try to put it out of your mind). You can see the veins of lightning through the bay windows, elongating the forms of the furniture. By now the sky is black, and your thoughts are punctuated every now and then by the discordant symphony of blaring thunder.

The deliberations are swift. After all, you can only stand the discomfort of sharing the same closed quarters with scum for so long... knowing they could be seated on the chaise lounge right beside you makes you so uncomfortable you could scream. Everybody lays out what they know on the table, hoping to find discrepancies in the individual claims. Something's just not adding up. You have decided the last scum must be

She bolts to her feet, shocked. She maintains her innocence and keeps questioning the others, telling what is to happen tomorrow when she "flips town". You of course are impatient. This scum is the cause of all your problems - she killed innocents and made you kill innocents yourself! -
and still has the nerve to lie about it

One of you grabs her roughly by the arm and begins dragging her towards the door that leads outside. The rest of you follow, some more bloodthirsty than others. She does not flail, only keeps shouting and asking questions. Anything to stall the fate that awaits. You still have the rope that hung last night's victim; it would be an effective (and appropriate) weapon, vindicating the deaths of the innocent with the blood of the guilty.

In the torrential downpour, everything is made slippery, and it's hard to hold anything down with firm grip. Frustrated, one of you shoves the scum against the side railing, a little unexpectedly. As she falls, her head knocks squarely upon a metal rigging fixture protruding from the ship's side. Her eyes lose focus as she slowly slumps to the ground.

The rain continues cascading down, blooming into a red puddle on the deck beneath your feet. She hasn't lost consciousness yet, but she's fading fast. Now she sits in a state of statuesque calm, whispering something lightly.

There's no use for the rope now. "
Well,
" someone says coldly, "
any last words?
" If the question is heard it is ignored, as she continues to murmur distractedly until finally, she doesn't.

The only crime

During the night you decide to stay awake, trading physical rest for peace of mind without much difficulty. Again you use some heavy furniture to block the entrance, and your vigilant gaze is set towards the door for hours. Every now and then you get up and look through the peephole to see if anything is going on in the corridor.

You have no real weapons but you have taken apart the bronze lampstand that was on the desk and hold it loosely across your lap. It would have to do. If the scum had decided to visit you they would have found you like that, sitting on the edge of your bed in your bathrobe and slippers.

But not tonight.

No – as the sun rises and someone comes to your door to collect you, you are still alive. Sorely sleep-deprived, you are cannot even find the energy to be happy to be spared.

The passengers have a brief conversation with the crew about the Vendetta's confused trajectory over the last several days. Despite the early sabotage of the ship's navigational systems, the staff says landfall is due within a couple days.

We don’t have a couple days
, you think tiredly.
This has to end today.


It's either them - or you. All the optimism of earlier days is gone.

So you are unsurprised when a crew member reports another one of the passengers was found dead this morning. You to be escorted to where the body was found. Unexpectedly, the staff do not lead you up to the deck, but to the level below the rooms, deeper within the ship.

Finally you come to the ship’s boiler room, and the crew member gestures you inside.

The space itself is large, though clearly designed to fit as much bulky equipment as possible – so nothing feels spacious. In fact, it is just the opposite. With large, bulky fixtures and pipes sticking out from every surface - even the ceiling - you're very cramped. Even though you are down to only a handful of people left, you feel very claustrophobic inside.

Nevertheless, you make your way around the narrow metal scaffolding used for maintenance checkups. As you turn a corner, the victim comes into view. They are collapsed against vertical piping. There is a glinting silk scarf skewed across their collarbone; looking closer, you notice the skin on their neck to be badly bruised. You realize the accessory must have been used as a garrote against the piping, so that the victim was slowly strangled to death.

Here, deep within the recesses of the ship, no one heard him die.

In his right breast pocket you find the keys to his cabin. You gingerly take the keys off his corpse. As with the others, you decide to head up to his room to search for anything that will help find the last scum.

Once you open his luggage, your heart drops. You expected to find nothing useful inside, but... in every compartment, you find a large assortment of instruments, painkillers, and gauze. This is no rudimentary first-aid kit. But none of you possess the medical training required to use these items safely. Based on the way some instruments have been strewn about on the wooden desk, you suspect
Yates
might have used them during past nights. But you can't be sure.

The day feels like it has hardly begun with a wide port harbor comes into view in the distance.

The Vendetta’s crew already has enough on their hands, but one member rushes up to tell the group that the ship will be taxied to the nearest docking platform within the next hour. Communications was finally able to reach the authorities ashore and fully disclose the homicidal situation onboard while requesting backup. Now you are simply awaiting further instructions.

Nevertheless, the passengers still desire to end this before stepping back on land once again. There’s a part of you that wants to leave all the bloodshed on the ship and wash your hands of it once you leave. Knowing you are close to shore does not relieve you of this burden. So you presses on, deciding they have narrowed down the last remaining suspect.

Except this one is going willingly.
CrashTextDummie
stands before you, insistent that he is today’s lynch. He even grabs the rope and places the noose around his neck. While he does this, he lays out a plan for the survivors to follow tonight and tomorrow.

With a sigh, he steps gently onto a crate that had been placed beneath the noose. He can’t help it; all he can think of are the other countless, wasted corpses that had been littered across the ship. There is still hope for these people. The remaining members tighten the coiled rope’s hold about his neck, making the fibers itch fiercely against his skin.

The group’s faces are set with utter perturbation, but
CrashTextDummie
’s serene nature in the wake of death shakes them all to the core.
SpyreX
steps forward cautiously, preparing to knock the crate out from underneath his feet. The condemned gives him a final look and nods resolutely; there's the cue.

The crate is sent skirting across the deck.

drops instantly, and the rope is pulled taut. The noose swayed back and forth from the mast, finally satiated.

The remaining townies turn their faces from the lynchee’s swaying body to the man standing beside them. They had been fooled, utterly fooled. Their faces betray their shock and horror, but it is simply too late...

When the crewmen make it up to the deck a minute later, the scum is no where in sight. Could he have jumped into the ocean? Could he have retreated, hiding in one of the hundred rooms aboard the ship?

As the harbor rolls closer and closer, the crew begins a search in vain. They know they will never find him. They will tell the authorities about the Vendetta’s madman, how he managed to fool the other passengers while he acted only from his own bloodthirsty impulses – how he managed to escape.

One man emerged as the victor from this bloody carnage. What was his motive? What was his purpose? He alone will live – only to kill again.

POST-GAME MOD THOUGHTS:


As was stated by several players already, the mafia team was probably underpowered this game (although I swear it didn’t seem that way during setup review) and could have used an extra member, perhaps a Traitor. They had a severe disadvantage pretty early on as I hadn’t anticipated crosskills until near endgame. I think it’s very much worth mentioning that Empire had a BRILLIANT initial read on SpyreX and if he had gone with his gut for his N1 roleblock, the game might have gone very,
very
differently. Plum did what she could after Empire was killed, but there wasn’t a whole lot of wiggle room.

That being said, I don’t think another person on the playerlist could have pulled off what SpyreX did for as long as he did. At first I thought SpyreX was going to screw himself by killing off the competition so swiftly, but it worked out for him. :P That was possibly the smoothest SK win I’ve read onsite, I’ve never seen a vigilante claim go over that well! Peabody could still have investigated SpyreX Night 4, as I did not make him investigation-immune – he would have turned up guilty.

As for the miller, I’ve never played in a game with one, so Day 1 was interesting to watch. I’ve always thought neighbors intriguing and knew I wanted to see how different factions would try to use the hood. In the end I decided the Serial Killer would have an interesting time with it, presenting a race of sorts to see if the Town Neighbor would suss him out in time.

Ffery’s vest was never used. I was also pretty amazed that town’s PRs survived so long without necessarily finding each other before massclaim, as I was expecting some to drop early game. The last couple lynches surprised me, as I thought both fferyllt and CTD had presented solid town play. I was puzzled by CTD’s self-voting and really couldn’t wrap my head around how it was optimal play (admittedly I find it impossible to get into a townie’s head given mod knowledge).

I want to speculate for posterity and you're the only person I can share it with.
- Peabody is cop, investigated NS innocent (N1) and Plum guilty (N2)

- Spyrex is vig (killed Empire and notscience)
- Garmr or Fferyllt are final scum

I don't expect a response to this. I do expect to be congratulated on those excellent deductions in post-game if they turn out to be right, and I do expect you to gracefully cast a shroud of silence over them if they turn out to be mostly wrong. >_>


CrashTextDummie, you get bragging rights because 99% of your predictions were spot on, but in the final hour where they really mattered… they were off by just enough.

Thanks to everybody for giving this game a shot and putting up with my modding! (And the setup… I learned a lot). And special shoutout to our replacements, who saved me a great deal of frustration midgame <3 Also thanks to backup mod Titus, who kept an eye on the thread even when I was slacking...

I almost did make a Godfather, but I was told by my reviewers that more than one false result in a Mini was a bit too much. I think it might have ended up being okay though, because there's no way the Miller was going to get investigated really :>

Like I said, SpyreX didn't have investigation immunity. I went strictly off the definitions on the mafiawiki page (where SKs are by no means guaranteed to show up not guilty) and the suggestions of my reviewers, who basically told me to choose from NK-immunity or investigation-immunity.
