Brotherhood of the Wolf Mafia

What stalks the night around the Province of Gevaudan? Is it a monsterous wolf that seeks the taste of human flesh? Something stranger? Or is it the most dangerous creature of all – Man?

The arrival of the King’s forces and envoys at first seemed to have stalled the carnage. No human or animal deaths occurred for a fort-night. Many wolves lay slaughtered at the hands of the King’s Guard. The King’s Battlemaster returned to Paris to report that source of the troubles had been taken care of, a stuffed wolf made into a grisly beast with him.

Yet the morning brought grim news. Not one but four serfs were found eviscerated. Some were missing limbs and their entrails were scattered all over the field.

B3) A lynch will occur when one player has the majority of votes for the day. A majority is defined as half the total living players in the game, rounded down, plus 1 additional vote.
B4) At deadline a lynch will only require 75% of the normal amount of votes, rounded down. As an example, if 6 votes are required for the Day at deadline 4 votes will secure a lynch. This rule will not apply when less than 4 players remain alive.
B5) In the case of a tie at deadline between players who meet the reduced lynch threshold the play who reached the required amout first chronologically will be lynched.
B6) Once a player has the majority of votes needed for a lynch, the lynch is final and further votes and unvotes will not count

Deadlines and Activity

C1) The first Day will have a deadline of 3 weeks. Each successive Day will have a deadline of 2 weeks. Deadlines may be extended at the discretion of the Mod for a reasonable amount of time.
C2) Days will not officially end until the mod locks the thread, regardless of whether a player has accumulated enough votes for a lynch or the posted deadline has passed. Players may continue to post until then.
C3) Night phases will last for

48 hours

from the time the thread is locked at the end of Day. Night actions must be submitted within the required time frame to be valid. Delay in starting the next Day due to extenuating circumstances will only extend this deadline if specifically stated by the Mod.
C4) If a night action is not submitted, no action will be taken.
C5) If a replacement is needed during a night phase, I will extend the deadline regardless of whether the player being replaced has a night action or not.
C6) I will try to prod players when they have not posted for

48 hours

. Players may also request prods on other players. All prods will be announced in thread.
C7) If a player does not respond to a prod within

72 hours

, or if they need to be prodded too often, they will be replaced. This will be up to the discretion of the mod.
C8) If you will be unable to post for over

72 hours

Sportsmanship

D1) Remember, mafia is a team game. Always play to win.
D2) Don’t be a jerk. This includes spamming the thread unnecessarily and attacking other players personally. Behavior that personally offends my sensibilities will result in warnings or punishment that does not benefit your affiliation’s interest based on the severity of the transgression. Consider this your fair warning.
D3) Treat this game as a committment and try to stay active out of fairness to the other players.

Other Notes about this Setup

E1) All night actions will be resolved using

Natural Action Resolution

. Remember the golden rule involving NAR … the timing list only comes into play when a direct conflict occurs.
E2) If there is a conflict between the rules and what is written in a player's role PM, the role takes precedence.
E3) Players with multiple choices for night actions may only perform one action per night unless otherwise stated in the role PM. This includes Factional kills. This rule does not apply to any member of a Mafia faction who is the sole survivor of their faction and who also possesses a regular night action.
E4) Non-investigative type roles with an active ability will not be told if their action was successful or not. Investigative roles will be told something along the lines of

"No Result"

if their action was unsuccessful.
E5) Protective abilities block all kill attempts (even stacked attempts) unless explicitly stated otherwise.
E6)

Expect the unexpected. Do not assume that standard expectations are applicable to the game.

With the King's Battlemaster and most of his Royal forces returned to Paris and most of the Count's knights otherwise engaged the deaths of four serfs ignites a firestorm in Gevaudan. Fingers begin to be pointed in all directions since natural causes seem to be ruled out. Long-time friends accuse each other of these heinous acts. The local Saloon's business booms. The Count has sequestered himself in his Manor and no-one else seems poised to take command.

As should be predicted when placing the responsibility of rooting out evil in the hands of an angry mob … chaos ensues. Fingers are pointed in every direction. Noble to serf, serf to serf, noble to noble. No-one is immune to suspicion.

Suddenly CooLDoG brings forth a hidden pistol and brandishes it about in a wild fashion.

“I have this and I’m going to use it. What say you all?” he say. Further bickering and name-calling develop as some try to appeal to CooLDoG with reason. Others start shouting that if CooLDoG doesn’t shoot who they say he should be hung from the Yard-arm.

CooLDoG listens intently and then turns the gun on havingfitz.

“You aren’t worthy to breathe any longer” he says, firing a silver bullet into havingfitz’s chest. Crumpling to the ground havingfitz struggles for breath and uses his last minutes alive to continue to make accusations against those present.

After havingfitz breathes his last you all go to the small hovel he called a home. After rummaging through his meager belongings you find nothing linking him to the deaths. Only items that linked him to the hard life of a peasant in Gevaudan.

After havingfitz’s untimely demise the attention swiftly turned to Katsuki. Unfortunately her profession was all about drawing attention, just not this type. The crowd moved in on her and began to drag her to the gallows.

Katsuki pleaded “Stop! You don’t know what you are doing! I’m on an important mission her in Gevaudan …”

Her pleas were quickly drowned out by the mindless roar of the Mob. Katsuki’s hands were bound and she was placed in the noose. Untrod Tripod kicked her off the platform and Katsuki hung from the yard-arm until her body ceased movement and the last breath left her lips.

The crowd quickly charged into the Brothel, determined to find evidence she was involved in the deaths. Turning over her room provided no implements of carnage. It did uncover a copy of the book “The Edifying” and a letter, hand-written by the Pope, indicating she had full reign to investigate the Brotherhood and bring an end to the revolt against the Church.

The day got into full swing much faster than it had yesterday. It didn’t take people long to focus their attention on Zang.

“You were sent here to help out with this problem. I don’t think you are doing much of anything to help out!” someone screamed. Others took not and began to look at Zang. He stared out into the distance with a half-vacant look in his eyes. When he finally seemed to notice the growing crowd he was rather taken aback.

“I’ve been sent by the King to help you out and this is how you repay me? In foolish accusastion? I’ll do my job as I see fit and am not going to listen to you rabble” he stated flatly.

GreyICE apparently didn’t like that answer and hit Zang over the head with a rock that was nearby. The mob then dragged Zang to the gallows and secured him in the noose. Zang, dazed from the blow to the head, had nothing to say as he was summarily hung.

The crowd roared through the streets to the Count’s Manor and tore apart the room where Zang had been staying. All sorts of interesting things were found. Surgeon’s tools, a writ of instruction from the King and a number of mementos from romantic trysts. The most interesting thing, however, was a set of metal gauntlets fashioned with a set of fearsome blades. The only reasons for owning instruments such as these is whole-sale slaughter. Looks like you made a good decision today.

The sun rises once again over Gevaudan but this morning shrill shrieks greet you instead of uneasy silence. People rush to find that two bodies have appeared overnight.

The first body initially is difficult to identify. The sheer amount of savagery inflicted on the poor man is grotesque. His face was ripped completely off and much of his body lies open and bare to the environment, his muscles and organs torn with ferocity. However the scars on one of his arms and what little of his clothing you can examine point to his identity.

You make your way once again to the Count’s Manor. This time the mob is more careful to treat the deceased’s items with reverent respect. You discover many trophies and souvenirs from hunting trips around the globe. You also find a pistol loaded with silver bullets. Lastly you find a copy of “The Edifying” with many notations. They speak to a once corrupt soul who has wanted to return to the path of righteousness in the eyes of God.

CooLDoG - Jean-Francois,

The second body does not show the signs of wholesale slaughter that you found with CooLDoG. This body lies positioned hands over chest, eyes closed. Several well placed strikes from an axe are the cause of death.

This time the mob moves to the local church to investigate the housing of the deceased. His private quarters contain many copies of “The Edifying” and copious handwritten notes of prayer asking God for salvation from the terrors that are currently afflicting Gevaudan. A detailed search uncovers no signs of any implements that could create wholesale carnage.

At first everyone seemed unsure of what to do since two bodies had shown up in the morning. Some discussion about the implications began but soon one rather unhinged women began to draw everyone’s attention. She ranted and raved about all sorts of topics that to most people made little sense in context of the events going on in Gevaudan.

Soon her comments turned from ranting to outright screaming and behavior more appropriate for a lunatic than a lady. The more she raved the more everyone became more uneasy with her presence. When she pick up a rock and threw it at a lame beggar nearby that was the last straw.

“String her up” yelled Lady Lambdadelta as the crowd gathered around GreyICE.

“YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME I’M THE COUNT’S DAUGHTER YOU MORONIC SHEEP” she screamed.

The crowd muscled her to the gallows and wasted no time hanging her high as she continued to struggle and yell until her breath finally gave out and her body ceased all movements.

Once again the mob returned to the Count’s Manor to examine the room of the former member of the Royal family. All sorts of pictures covered the walls showing the Count doting over his daughter. She surely must have been his favourite. After examining her journal you find evidence of a dark underside to the young girl. Scandalous drawings, bawdy notes and a pair of gauntlets matching the pair you found in Zang’s quarters. Once again the threat to Gevaudan seems to have decreased.

Dawn breaks to the unfortunate reality of another dead body. This one is found brazenly displayed right in the center of the Town square. Once again the body is desecrated in a manner beyond all reason. Her head is crushed and her heart, lungs and liver have all been torn from her body and laid about for scavenging animals to nibble on. Luckily one shoe remains on the body and its distinctive style identifies its now deceased owner.

You move to the small home she kept. It is sparsely decorated and contains few of the luxuries found in the Count’s opulent estate. You carefully search the premises but find no signs that the owner was in any way special or note-worthy.

It didn’t take long for the accusations to begin flying fast and furious. Everyone had their own personal belief about what grudges might have shaped the recent events. Voices were raised and unkind words were spewed forth with vigourous intentsity. The one lone voice asking for calmness and rational discourse was ignored.

“I saw him carrying around weapons just like those we’ve already uncovered!” someone shouted, pointing an accusing finger at UncertainKitten. He begins arguing with the accuser calling him a liar and idiot. Pretty soon the mob swarms UncertainKitten and drags him to the gallows. Lady Lambdadelta secures the noose and gives him a hearty push into the air.

When UncertainKitten has finally passed the mob quickly moves to his home in an effort to determine if the the accusations are true. The small building is quickly ransacked but no implements of torture and mayhem are uncovered. The apparent danger to Gevaudan continues on ….

In what has become an expected occurance once again the dawn greets you with the sight of bodies.

The first body is predictably found with massive wounds and damage. This time the face was left intact but the torso is shredded and both arms are missing. The feet have been crushed and mangled by a heavy club that lies discarded nearby.

It takes no time at all to search the small hovel of the first victim. The bare necessities of making a meager living in Gevaudan are all that can be found.

Fate - Jean Chastel,

was slaughtered Night 4.

The second body again does not resemble the first. No wholesale damage, just a single clean blow to the base of the neck. It appears that the deceased offered no struggle against his attacker. The body lies once again with eyes closed and hands folded carefully on his chest.

Again the small home of the deceased shows no signs of anything unusual. Just the normal everyday items that any non-Noble works their fingers to the bone earning in an effort to maintain some semblance of quality of life.

With so many gone, either victims of a horrible death or swung from the rope, it could be expected the day to be quite. Reality, however, did not meet expectations.

“I know you are scum. Why have you killed so many” Untrod Tripod yelled, pointing at Lady Lambdadelta. He quickly turned to face his accuser.

“That’s a lie. I know you are the culprit. We both know that this man isn’t the guilty one, and I know I am innocent of the wrong-doings” Lady Lambdadelta said, motioning to AlmasterGM.

He stood quietly nearby, observing both Untrod Tripod and Lady Lambdadelta. They both continued to accuse each other of horrific acts. He calmly observed, motionless. At some point both Untrod and Lady Lambdadelta both stopped yelling at each other and turned to look at AlmasterGM.

With one swift motion he drew a tomahawk from his belt and threw it directly into Un trod Tripod’s skull.

Lady Lambdadelta stands motionless, in shock, as AlmasterGM swiftly walked over to check the body. He leaned over and examined Untrod Tripod. A quick search of his clothes reveals only the meager trappings of one of Gevaudan’s poorest citizens.

Game in Review

-

First let me say thanks to everyone who played, be they originally signed up or replaced in. Mafia games are only as good as the efforts of the players involved.

Second I think everyone should watch the source movie. It's an excellent film with several great moments including -

1. The introduction to Mani the Kick-Ass Bodyguard at the very start of the film.
2. The reveal of the Beast (not included in the game) when it appears to Gregoire.
3. The battle in the Forest between Thomas, Gregoire, Mani and the Beast.
4. Mani's death.
5. The revelation that Gregoire is not some soft, weak member of the Court but a complete kick-ass warrior.

Third I would have to say I was surprised at some of the replacement requests that were made. A couple really left me scratching my head as to why they were made in context of what I know of those players.

Game Thoughts -

Mafia MVP - I would split this between Mariyta and Lady Lambdadelta. Both played good scum games and kept off the radar. I thought that LLD might be overselling it at the end (especially by continuing to hammer Untrod about the 13 hours Day 4) but overall they played well enough to win. And that is what counts.

I thought the game would be best characterized as a tale in three parts -

Part 1 (Day 1) - This was a complete clusterfuck for Town. Suspicion was scattered all over the place with no cohesive leadership. The little momentum that did develop towards the Mafia (Zang) was quickly extinguished by AGM's Neighbor claim. By the end of the day the Mafia had direct knowledge of the identity of EVERY town PR, either from in-thread claims or via the Neighbor QT. To top it off the deadline lynch of Katsuki was horribly pushed and caused him to use his one-shot Modified Jailkeep on AGM, another Town power-role. In the development QT I remarked that I expect a sweep going into N1 just solely based on how much information the Mafia had.

Part 2 (Night 1 to Day 3) - The decision made by the Mafia to both block and kill AGM is one of the most mind-boggling decisions I have seen in a Mafia game. They had correctly deduced that AGM was Jailkept by Katsuki yet didn't connect the fact that he would already be blocked and would be protected. Selecting their actions was the equivalent of doing nothing N1. Springboarding into Day 2 AGM correctly surmised that the scum tried to kill him (as he probably doubted another Doc existed) and pushed for Zang as scum. When GreyICE slipped in letting on he knew AGM was a Vig it completely reversed the momentum to Town. GreyICE flailed his way into the all but assured Day 3 lynch once Zang flipped scum. Additionally the Mafia did not wait for Zang to get on to janitor himself (which he could do) for the WIFOM involved. Day 3 comes and as expected the Mafia are down to their final member.

Part 3 (Night 3 to endgame) - The decision to kill Mina ended up being a good one for the scum as it confused Town and threw Fate off the trail. When Spyrex was not lynched it more or less assured the LLD would not be a Nightkill target and thus live to endgame. Untrod's decision to even discuss the possibility of AGM as Serial Killer was strange. No-one else had claimed a protective role so it was unlikely that AGM was lying. The lack of kills N1 and N3 should have signalled to Untrod that in a three way LYLO AGM had to be Town.

In the end AGM had to make a tough choice. As stated in the Dead QT I was surprised that AGM didn't ask for claims to gather all possible information. I was also surprised that coming on the heels of Liten he didn't go for LLD as the scum (when he himself had been cast in the Untrod role there and saw Furry make the right call).

I'll answer any questions and take any comments about the set-up and my moderating you would like to offer.

A final note - I was somewhat disappointed that some of the cooler roles I wrote into the game didn't get used (Sylvia's redirection power, Zang's janitor power).

Do we get a Mafia and Neighbor QT?

See I can't really feel AGM's pain.

I NEVER, EVER make it to a LYLO situation where I am Town and have to make the tough choice.

And I have to say that despite some of the vitriol put out there overall Untrod played a solid, if unspectacular game. Not nearly worthy of the scorn he got in thread and Dead QT. I'd list at least 4 other townies as having played worse, if I had to rank everyone.

From a spoiled perspective I have to agree with LLD. I would pretty clearly say Untrod outplayed LLD by a pretty wide margin on Day 5. He just forgot to appeal to AGM's ego

Should I? I generally hate large games, but... it might be fun.

Large games can certainly be fun but I think suffer from the same problems, amplified, that Minis suffer from -

They are more suspectible to damage done by true VI players
They accumulate pages quickly and are harder to replace player for that reason
More players and roles leaves even more room for potential mistakes.

I'm not saying avoid them .. I'm saying tred carefully.

Untrod - good luck with your game. My only advice would be to keep on top of the Mod management end of the game much more than you did in ATHF Mafia. Frequent vote-counts and prompt opening and closing of Nights is important to the flow of a game.

But UK as I recall in the game we played you were not enamored of MoI who was willing to challenge you and play aggressively ... resulting in me getting ventilated.
