Rules
1. While it is understandable that on occasion tempers may flare, please remeber that this is a game. Pleasehave fun,be respectfulof your fellow players andtry not to take anything personally.
2. Votes must take the form ofVote: Playerand similarlyUnvote. It isn't necessary toUnvoteevery time but it would be appreciated by your mod and your fellow players for clarity's sake. If you need to grab my attention for any reason please throw an@Mod: statementin your post.
3. Please try to maintain more than the minimum standard for activity levels which is currently 1 post every 48 hours. If you go 48 hours without posting you will be prodded (as many times as necessary) and if you go 72 hours without posting you will be replaced. Exceptions will be made for low activity periods such as weekends and holidays.
4. This game will be run without deadlines unless activity levels begin to impair progress. Deadlines will be at the sole discretion of the moderator. Night-time deadlines will always be 72 hours.
5. Whenever a player has reached a simple majority of votes he/she will be lynched and the game will roll over into night phase.
6.Blueis my color. Please don't use it.
7. If you have moderator privileges on MS please don't use them to edit your posts in this game.
8. When you are killed you are allowed 1 post which may contain no other characters, letters, words or phrases besides "Bah" and/or "Go Town." Please refrain from doing even this unless absolutely necessary.
9. Do not quote or paraphrase the mod in any way.
10. I am fallible. While I strive not to make mistakes, they do occasionally happen. Please politely correct me if you spot one.
11. Once the game is over I will post links to each QT thread. If you have an issue with this please let me know.
Game Specific Mechanics
12. The mafia will be allowed to choose 4 people to be excluded from being the Chosen One; out of the remainder, one will assume the role at random (without being notified).
13. The Chosen One can't be Nightkilled or Endgamed; it can only be lynched while there are still townies alive.
14. The selection process for the Chosen One must be concluded before beginning of the game.
15. All self-votes count as two (2) votes. Because of the possibility of a deadlock at 2:2 endgame with the Chosen One still alive, any selfvote from -2 will be counted as a hammer. This could become important.
16. This game will be full reveal. Yes, even the Chosen One will be revealed upon death.
17. Town Lynches are Compulsory.

Now that all of the dead weight [no pun intended] has been replaced, I hope that we're on autopilot from here on out! Good luck everyone! Have a good game!
Please also note MiteyMouse will be V/LA from Tuesday until Sunday. Your moderator knew this before the game began; however he believes that her awesomeness later on in the game will more than make up for her absence. She will only be replaced if at least 50% of the players in the game request as such.
Please remember you made a commitment to finish this game.See rule #3!-

The town does not know when the scum team finished the selection process. The intention was to delay the start of the game from the very beginning in order to remove the temptation for metagaming and I should have made that more clear. As a friendly reminder to all players this was designed to be a semi-open setup. Everything you need to know is in the first two posts.Last edited by hohum on Wed Jul 15, 2009 5:37 pm, edited 1 time in total.-

I'm currently seeking replacements for both Archon and Nuwen. It may take a while because the request backlog in the replacement queue has grown considerably. You guys can help though. If you know someone reliable you'd like to play with please have them PM me.
Never mind.
Herodotus replaces Archon
Raivann replaces Nuwen-

This is the last time this setup will be run in a 9P format without some major changes, so I would appreciate it if you guys would just play the game instead of using the mechanics to figure out a breaking strategy. I'm going to revoke the ability to no-lynch for this reason Please note the rule change accordingly.Last edited by hohum on Thu Jul 16, 2009 11:41 am, edited 4 times in total.-

Been lots of discussion about deadlines. To clear a few things up if I do decide to set a deadline and that deadline comes and goes I will lynch one of the living townies at random. The random pool of townies will include the chosen one.
It's been>3>2 weeks since day 1 began so I am pretty close to setting a deadline. When I do set one it will be 7 days. Just be forewarned.Last edited by hohum on Wed Jul 22, 2009 9:56 am, edited 1 time in total.-

As the town gathered around, accusations flew in all directions. The town elders watched in glee as Raivann was dragged to the tree and hung by the neck.

Screams were heard by the villagers throughout the night. Out of fear and disbelief nobody went to check... until morning...
"Is everyone accounted for?" shouted one from the crowd. Everyone checks, and rechecks only to slowly realize that one of their own had vanished.

As the town gathered around to discuss the previous day and night's events, accusations started flying. It was soon clear that one amongst you would take the fall for the shootings which occurred through the night.
"Someone MUST be sacrificed to the gods for this" shouted one from the crowd. "Throw Special Ed into the volcano!" the voice persisted.
So the town complied. They tied ed to a rock (as if he could swim in lava) and tossed him in.

The town once again awoke to find one less citizen remaining. Frantically the group went from house to house only to discover the mangled and beaten corpse of Papa Zito, who had clearly been bludgeoned to death.

Day 3 dawns. Good luck!
With 5 alive, it takes 3 to lynch.-

I must say, well played, dry-fit. Even though it was a loss you did well for someone with as little experience as you. I thought you actually had a chance to pull off the victory for a moment there.
With that said, I think this setup is broken. I want to fix it. It's very challenging for a 2-man scum team to pull off a victory here.
I've received a couple of suggestions privately and the one I like the most is this one:
Simply add a 3rd goon. In the event that the scum team can successfully get the chosen one lynched, they basically become a throw-away role at that point. It should become very obvious after a successful chosen lynch who (at least one of) the scum are. It's very difficult for the partner to remain concealed through the rest of the game alone against the scrutiny of a well-coordinated town.
I welcome any comments.-

What little data we have from the few setups we've run so far seems to support the opposite conclusion. In retropsect it isn't that foregone. This is a 7:2 vanilla setup with a very powerful town PR and no Mafia power roles. That makes this game very biased towards a town victory and in fact this is the closest the scum team has (and I think will ever) come to a victory.Herodotus wrote:I think the point of his vote was to make me believe that I was choosing between the scum and the chosen, to convince me to self-hammer. If they had both voted each other earlier, I might have done that, but in this case it was too late. But it was a logical strategy.
About the setup:
I don't think the scum should try too hard to get the chosen lynched until the game is close to lylo. Raivann's day 1 extended vote for me was probably a mistake.
If we hadn't lynched mafia on day 1, I think they would have had a good chance of winning.
With three goons, I'd consider it unbalanced toward the scum. If a townie is lynched on day 1, day 2 will be 8-player lylo. Adding an extra townie would extend this to day 3; it's not clear how balanced that is, but it would make it relatively easy to get the chosen lynched.
The usual fix to balance a town PR is to add a mafia PR, but in this particular instance no mafia PR could touch the town PR. This gives the mafia more incentive to actively push for a lynch. This also means that they're less able to conceal their motives.
Based on that notion I think an 7:3 3rd good day start achieves balance. This setup needs to be harder for the town to win.Last edited by hohum on Mon Sep 14, 2009 11:54 am, edited 1 time in total.-
