For centuries, the citizens of the tiny town of Vollville have lived in peace – untroubled by the recent endemic of mafia killings that seemed to be plaguing the rest of the world. After all, what would a powerful criminal organisation have to gain by infiltrating and massacring a village of just 13 people?

The apparent immunity of Vollville has, regrettably, ended forever. This morning, the body of the town’s beloved and dashing Mayor Vollkan was found strangled in his bed. Carved into his forehead were the words: “Mafia has arrived.”

The remaining 12 citizens of Vollville have gathered to determine the identities of those responsible. Nobody has entered the village; nobody has left. The guilty must be among the 12.

Opie trembled as the 11 other villagers turned towards him, their eyes glowing madly. “Lynch him!” they screamed.
“I’ll get the rope,” Guardian offered sombrely.
A sly grin curled its way along Adel’s face. “No,” she spoke with a hint of sadistic glee, as her head turned towards Oman, “I have a

better idea. Oman, I think opie would love to hear some of your limericks before he dies.”
Oman clapped his hands in excitement and began reciting:

“NO!” moaned Xylthixlm.
“I think,” suggested Adel, “That opie deserves to have the…er…pleasure of your poetry in a private area, like your own house. That way he can appreciate your eloquence without being distracted by the rest of us.”
“Good idea,” grinned Oman, as he slapped handcuffs onto opie and led him away, “Come with me for a real treat.”

The other ten sighed with relief, and waited. After a few minutes, opie’s scream rang out from across the other side of the village.

A few minutes later Oman returned, a confused look on his face. “Er…” he began, “Opie died while I was reciting. He must have had a heart attack from the fear of being killed…or something. Can I recite my limerick for you guys instead?”
The ten exchanged nervous glances and Erg0 spoke up, “It’s getting awfully late. I’d love to hear your poetry, but I think we all need to head home. But first we had better check up on opie.” The other 9 villagers nodded vigorously and ran out of the room, Oman following.

They found opie’s body in Oman’s house, slumped in a chair at the dining-room table. His mouth was hanging open, and severe bruising on his head made it apparent that he bashed himself to death against the table. “I don’t know why he did that. He must have been too excited,” mumbled Oman. The villagers searched opie’s clothing, but found nothing. They had sentenced an innocent townie to the most hideous death imaginable.

After the result of the lynch that day, Guardian had become convinced that more needed to be done to prevent the town being overrun. For that reason, Guardian decided to use the telescope for the good of the town, rather than for its usual more perverted purpose. He peered around the village, surveying for any sign of activity – hoping he might be have the honour of saving the town.

At around midnight, he was startled to see a figure moving rapidly just in front of his own house, the streetlights inadequate to identify the person. In his excitement, Guardian leant forward, bashing the telescope against the window. The figure froze in its dash, a flash of silver appearing under the lights. Within a few seconds, Guardian lay dead on his bedroom floor, a single bullet wound in his forehead.

On the other side of town, pickemgenius had also decided to turn his similarly perverted habit of stalking to the town’s advantage. Hiding in a copse in the village gardens, he waited for any sign of activity – intending to catch the scum in the act. Pickem’s hopes were short-lived, however. As he intently looked out from behind a tree onto the street, he didn’t notice the figure sneaking up behind him and raising a knife. Before he had a chance to react, pickem was on the ground, screaming as the steel repeatedly entered his flesh. Mercifully, he died quickly.

As the crowd encircled Guardian, he came to realise that it was no longer any use pretending to be a cop. He sighed, and tried a new tactic, “Look, I am just a serial killer. You can trust me.”

When it dawned on him that this latest plea, oddly enough, was not believed, Guardian stood still and glared at the eight others. As Guardian was strung up on a lamppost, he gave a malicious laugh: “Even if you kill me, your town won’t last much longer. The Family shall triumph.”

Adel was feeling good with herself as she walked home from the meeting. She had helped bring down a mafia member, after all. As she reached her home, she was puzzled by the fact that her front door was open. Cautiously, she stepped inside - fearing the worst.

As she stood frozen in the doorway, a shot rang out from the street. A splatter of blood burst from Adel's head as she crumpled to the ground.

She lay there all evening, to be found by the town the following morning.

They found handcuffs in her pocket, but since this was Adel they decided that they probably weren't there for law enforcement. She was just a an ordinary townie.

The town was unimpressed. After the antics of Guardian the day before, they had learnt to be sceptical.

“Then perhaps you wouldn’t mind performing some medical work?” suggested Matt_S, adding with a hint of amusement, “I think Jitsu is in need of a prostate examination.”

Xylthixlm’s face paled. His head turned from Jitsu’s beaming smile to the noose. The choice was obvious…

Oman swelled with joy as he opened his front door; the town had almost eradicated the scum. As he poured himself a celebratory glass of wine, he fell back in fright as the wine glass exploded, a bullet hole appearing on his kitchen floor. He didn’t have time to duck or react, for another shot followed immediately after, hitting him squarely in the heart.

The next morning, Oman was found dead. A search of his body revealed that he was carrying nothing other than a book containing his limericks, which was promptly burned.

That same evening, misfortune also befell Incognito. As he slept, a tall figure entered his bedroom, drawing a small vial from a pocket somewhere in its coat. The figure cautiously opened the vial and held it above Incognito’s lips, the poison within dripping into his mouth. When Incognito’s absence was noticed, he too was searched. He carried nothing.

Matt_S trembled as he entered the town hall for the fourth, and what would be his final day. He’d seen the town identify his colleagues – Guardian and Xylthixlm – and knew he faced formidable odds. If he ran away, the town would know he was guilty; the only option was to hope that the town’s stream of success ran dry.

Matt_S realised his folly in attending the meeting very shortly after arriving. The town was, indeed, out for blood, and Matt_S was their target. He fiddled nervously with the vial of poison in his pocket as the town set their sights upon him. When the final vote fell, he gave in and, before the town could stop him, Matt_S emptied the contents of the vial into his mouth. Knowing that Incognito had been poisoned the night before, the town surmised, correctly, that the scum had lost.

I have a few questions, for anybody who wouldn't mind answering:
1) Was the setup balanced? Or, rather, would it have been balanced if the tracker and watcher didn't die before doing anything ?
2) I basically came up with my nightkill MOs on a whim. As in, there was nothing systematic about them; it was just me trying to have fun with the deaths. Was that appropriate?
3) Vote-counts. Did my system of having the top-of-page counts and the first page collection work well?
4) Anything else?

Here is Oman's explanation when I questioned him about his tracker claim:

I was trying to draw the NK, whilst giving me an out if neccesary. Basically, I expected the mafia to NK me and pat to vig me. With Xyl claiming nurse, it meant that the mafia knew a doctor existed. I was going to claim cop so that I definatly got the protect (and then the mafia NK would bounce off me anyway). However the risk of claiming cop and outing the real one was too high.

Then I claimed the next best thing: tracker!

Oh fuck, there already is a tracker, I thought that was CKD's cult mafia....

Well...uh...draw the NK.

And that was how my perfect plan failed.

It's probably ok. It added a bit of confusion, but was possible to get round. If you don't like people being able to work out what the killing groups are from flavour then it's fine.

Okay. My intention was simply to provoke speculation. I wanted people not to have a sound idea of what things meant. I could have just written "killed night #", but that's bland

Minor quibble: On night 2, you opened the day early even though my Xyl kill was only provisional. I probably wasn't going to change it, but it still would have been better to wait.

Thanks for raising that issue. The mafia actually sent in provisional kills as well. I was tossing up whether or not to PM you all for a "confirm", but I decided instead to push on with the game. I'll think about this for future games and come up with a means of accomodating for expediency and indecisiveness on the part of night choosers.
