By the way, the next patch will include a new ore and new structures. Do you guys want me to "delete" unused areas of the server so that we can find these closer to home, or do you prefer to go exploring futher away to find the new features?

Welll -- if anyone could make a big screenshot of the current map (from the dynmap), and everyone collaborated making the areas that are "used", it would be easier for me to know which areas to crop. I got quite a busy weekend, so I leave this for you guys :-)

Hey guys,

I have gotten a few requests for extra warps. My position at the moment is that, no, I wont be adding more warps in the short term. If you want to build on a far or hard-to-reach place, that is a challenge that you put to yourself - you can always set your /home to your new place, or make a nether shortcut, or build in an "easier" place.

Really, the server is supposed to be "vanilla". Asking the op team for things will just make it less likely that I will add those things as temporary competition prize rewards in the future.

UT - I LOVED your garden.

As for the crop - indeed, emerald won't be that common. And you can get it by trading. I was more thinking on the lines of the new jungle and desert temples that might crop up.

But then again, I might just crop out the extreme legs that some explorers made :-) -- remember you guys have a VERY LAZY admin :-P

Hey guys.

I'm thinking about adding some markers to our dynamic map. I tried setting up the plugin so that marks could be automatically added by putting up plaques with some specific codes, but that is not working. So just PM me the coordinates and description of the marker, and I will manually add them to the map. Please do it through PM (to not clog up the thread).

Thanks!

Hey guys!

1- I started to change one of the villages in our map to be a Testificate megalopolis! If anyone is interested in helping, feel free to hop on and modify the village. The number of testificates is directly related to the number of "valid doors" in a radius around the city. A valid door is one where the number of "covered tiles" between the inside and the ouside of the door are different. If you find this complicated to understand, just follow the examples that I have already built there -- our you can prettify the existing NPC buildings, or build a small house+beds around the nether portal, etc.

2- I took some pictures of the construction process:

http://imgur.com/a/EurDU#0

3- To get to the testificate village, go to the blaze farm, and take the path leaving from there -- right now there is not a path actually - just follow straight until you find the portal -- if anyone would like to build a path and a portal house in the nether, that would be great!

4- added some markers to the map

Door/village !!SCIENCE!!

http://www.reddit.com/tb/vcjzf

Also, walling it off is cool, but dont worry too much about it - if there are less villagers than 1/3 * doors, villagers will start spawning again, it seems

The "daily" worldmap is not being updated anymore. The new host is messing with my automated backups, and I'm having to copy the backups over manually. If you want, I can give you a link to the most recent backup so you can make an image of the world map yourself :-)

Well, like I said in the post where I took the pictures of the Testificate Village:

Sometimes, when walking from point A to point B, you pass through places and see things that you didn't see before. So the points of a overworld powered rail, even when we have /home and /back, can be:

- Making an asthetically pleasing building
- Challenging yourself to gather the materials and make the gargantuan project
- make a route that can be used to see some nice views

In an previous single player world, I had a nice "finger" like mountain with a tower built on top of it, and with some rail spinning around the mountain to the tower. It would be much simpler and easier to make a simple back and forth rail inside the mountain, but the rail outside gave me great views of the mountain ranges nearby. (it was also fun to try and snipe mobs far away from the moving minecart).

Uh. That was a joke (whooosh?).

If I cropped the map at a 800 radius from 0,0, most of the interesting constructions of the server would have been kaput.

I just forgot about whe whole cropping thing, to be honest.

The easiest way to make sure a portal will take you where you want is to build the portals in the appropriate locations in Both worlds.

Overworld location: X, Y
Nether location: X/8, Y/8

If you build both portals (and activate them), they will take to each other without fail.

Hmmmm, It is possible. Fortunately, I backed up everything just before the update. But I have no time right now to restore the nether backup and check if everything is correct. Maybe I will have some time sunday, if you guys want to try it. Until then, try not to build on the nether too much.

Fishy, send me a PM on sunday if you want to help me check it out :-)

Ok, so I'm planning to restore the nether backup now. Can anyone give me an idea of a place that was lost in the nether due to the Bukkit activation, so that I can check if I restored the backup correctly?

Reck -- If you want, I can teleport you and Grimm to an un-explored, remote area of the server, so that you will have a more "unspoiled" experience, while still being able to talk to people and join then if you want to.

Unlike Terraria, Minecraft's world is infinite, so you can just move away if some area is overdeveloped.

Hey Guys.

Please let's be reasonable when it comes to exploring. The world size was 500Mb last weekend when I made a backup and installed bukkit, and now it is 700Mb. The size is still not that bad, but if it keeps increasing at this rate, I will be forced to start clipping the world.

So if you just want to go to somewhere far way, take the nether. You will generate much less chunks than by taking a large sea voyage.

Anyway, making a backup of the world now. I identified the nether problem. Some people lost from two weeks up to two months of work on the nether. Ouch. I will be resetting the nether to the state it was on Sept 22nd when the backup is done (about 3 hours from now). If you want to mine some glowstone, now is the time ;-)

Reck: There isn't a lot of "Terraria-like" content, like world bosses or multiple tiers of gears, or anything like that. Minecraft is much more about building.

There are some hidden structures to find (temples, dungeons, etc), and as Om mentioned, one world boss. But you end up setting up most of your goals, like building roads, castles or complex machines using redstone.

I could not figure out how to generate obsidian. It just kept turning into stone

The dynamics of water and obsidian follow some rules:

Liquids, in Minecraft (lava and water) come as two kinds of blocks: Source blocks, and Flow blocks.

Source blocks are the ACTUAL lava/water blocks, the blocks that you can pick up and place with a bucket.
Flow blocks are the blocks that are generated by source blocks. You cannot pick up Flow blocks with a bucket.

When any water (source or flow) touches a lava SOURCE block, obsidian is generated.
When any water (source or flow) touches a lava FLOW block, stone or cobblestone is generated (depending on the position of the water and lava).

Note that whether water or lava is "moving" or not makes NO DIFFERENCE. Source blocks may appear moving under certain conditions.

So, I just found out about a neat cool program for people who want to be spoiled a bit, but not too much: AMIDST

Amidst will generate a minecraft biome map from a seed or save game, so that you can see landmasses, biomes and villages without generating those chunks. It is very handy for exploration, so you don't get lost at sea lookign for a new landmass, or to find where is the nearest large desert. Worth checking out!

(PS: the biome generation varies widely between minecraft versions, but the landmass generation has stayed constant for a while -- biomes shown by amiss might be different from those in older chunks in our world, but the continents are quite accurate)

In post 6843, Maestro wrote:but Claus made some comments a little while back - try and stay close to others because the server's getting huge.

Hey guys, just to make my "server is getting huge" comment clearer.

The thing that makes a world bigger in Minecraft is not how far apart people are from each other, but how many chunks are generated. So it is not so much a problem of you living somewhere remote, but of the many many useless sea chuncks that are generated when you do. If you really want to find new land, I would suggest going through the nether, since that generates 1/8th of the land.

Why is it a problem if the server gets too big, though? Well, the real practical problem is backup problem. If each world is a 700Mb beast, it limits how many backups I can keep on my hard disk at the same time (maybe I should buy a Minecraft dedicated hard disk :-)), also, it means that making backups takes longer (right now it takes about 4 hours for me to download a backup from the server).

Anyway, if I ever decide to clip the world, there are plenty of unused sea chunks to be axed first, so don't worry yet! :-) By the way, if you are building in the middle of nowhere in the sea, make sure that your building is clearly visible from dynmap - a big flag or somehting. If you want to build an indetectable secret base, I suggest doing it under a land mass ;-)

Oh, and I'm upgrading chevre's contest (because I love building contests).

The winner of the contest, besides whatever prize Chevre gives, will also get one week of Fly-mode in the server! The week can be redeemed any time between when the winner is announced, an December 31st. Just send me a PM.

If the winner is a mod of the server, the highest placed non-mod winner will get this prize.

Hmmm. That is true. Well, let me know before doing any big sea expeditions, so I can check for server size and prune the useless sea chunks as necessary.

Reck, about slime:

Non-spoilery:
Slimes appear deep underground (under depth 20), in wide open spaces. They are very rare.

Spoilery
There are specific chunks where slimes can be generated. If you google "minecraft slime finder", you will find many webpages that can list such chunks based on your seed. After finding a slime chunk, carve a large room, at least 3 blocks high, and keep it well lighted. Slimes will eventually spawn there, even though they are still rather rare.

Reck:
- I think the seed number is displayed when you press "F3", if not, I will try to find it later.
- The cap is based mostly on the memory capacity of the server. I can upgrade it if needed, but I don't think we reach that cap that often. It seems to me that we have at most 5-6 people online on very busy days.

Huh, you're right. Lava, TNT, etc were blacklisted. Funny, I remember going through the config file the first time I installed essentials, and I don't remember those being there.

You should be able to place lava now. Also, fire will spread again - take care!

If you make the floor of the maze glass, and put lava everywhere under the maze, it will be REALLY hard to tell if there is a hole in a given corridor or not. In the first Mafiascum server I had a house with a "glass over lava" floor. Someone once broke just one of the glass blocks, and it became a ninja deathtrap.

Just saying.

Wow, loved the ravine village story :-) Good Job fixing it up!

Also, I've just spent some time reading up the updates for 1.4.

Maps are being completely overhauled!

Crafting a map creates an empty map. The empty map can be activated, by right clicking it, or left as is.

You can clone a map by crafting an active map with any number of empty maps.

Also, you can "increase" an active map by crafting it together with 9 sheets of paper. This makes the map "zoom out". There are 5 zoom levels, from 128x128 blocks up to 2048x2048 blocks.

Also, you can FINALLY put maps on walls using frames.

Wowzers!

Vinelands is at -40k, -15k from spawn. When I used to build railways back in the old server, simply a 1K railway was already a huge headache.

Maybe make a nether path + railway first?

It would be cooler to just add more walls around the current walls rather than tearing down walls and moving them farther out. It'd be like, different districts or something. Rings on an old tree.

When I played, we didn't even have cubes - we had to make our structures with lines, and we liked it!

I suggest making a "Wither Arena" in a well secluded area in the Nether, so that people don't go summoning it near anything important :-)

So,

1- It was not Jackal - he has not logged since September 22. I'm going through the logs and backups to try to find out who it was.
2- I have added "chest protection" to the server using Lockette ([edited]). See the tutorial here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... VcU_ZPgF0E

(I did not allow the locking of doors, just chests).

I REALLY didnt want to add this to the server (no idea how it will interact with backups), but I simply don't have time to go all CSI with the new players.

Have fun.

Ok, I've changed the locking plugin from essentials to Lockette, on Maru's suggestion. Please try it out and let me know how it goes. The tutorial is here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... VcU_ZPgF0E

Use it at its own risk: Remember that the plugin might be deactivated for a few days when we move to 1.4 next week. Anything REALLY sensitive should be put in ender chests.

Reck - Send me a message with the times you want to check, and I can tell you. It is actually super easy to do that.
I have half a mind to temporarily un-whitelist everyone who logs on the server but doesn't bother to post on this thread, with the all the recent incidents.
Unfortunately, I am really busy at work until the end of the month, so anything too complicated will have to wait.

Also:
1.4.1 is coming out tomorrow (frames! zombie testificates! Anvils! Half walls!). Do you guys want to upgrade as soon as the new version hit, or do
you prefer to wait until bukkit is out? (this is not a vote). Cheers!

Don't worry, I still have to think it through how exactly I want to implement this rule. Since I'm really out of time this month, I will try to think about it during the weekend.
Of course there will be some sort of exception if you have someone to vouch for you on the thread in your place.

Of course. Also items like eggs de-spawn after 5 minutes, so I'm not overly worried about that part.

1- Awesome costume!
2- I'm not too big on putting player-requested spawners, or using wither heads as prizes
3- On the other hand, some simpler mob eggs (zombie/village eggs? no creepers) could be a nice prize.

So, I had this great idea: "de-whitelist people who are not posting". Well, guess what? there is simply no one who logged in the month of October who has not posted in the thread within three days of their last log in.

So all these "stealing and missing stuff" is either one of you guys doing it. Or one of you guys getting creepered near each other's place and not owning to it. Which is quite disgusting, to be frank. It is a damn virtual game, how hard is it to say "sorry, I got creepered near XY's place and I don't have the resources to fix it". I would probably just creative in the fix anyway.

I will look into "blocklogger" mods, but to be quite honest, I'm this close to just handing the server to someone else, because I have no interest into putting time and money into this kind of shit.

Hikari/KDCA -- To be quite honest, I'm of the mind that teleportation, /home, etc are unnecessary luxuries. I would have switched to 1.4 in a heartbeat if it were not for the fact that apparently now our community is dependent on chest protection plugins.

Mist: No need. Once I install the logging plugin (just waiting for the backup to finish), it should be possible to know exactly who touched a given chest at a given time.

CoreProtector installed. Now can we please stop messing with other people's stuff?

Izak, it does better than that: you can filter interactions with a block by player, time, everything. It is lovely. I will send you and Xalxe a PM with details on how it work. (or better yet, can you log on, so I can show you?)

Stop right there Maru. The way you put it, it seems that I did not pay for some silly reason. I CANT do a new payment if the new host wont get their shit together.

1- Seion.us moved to another company. I was not informed, until I made the payment to seion.us last thursday, which came back, and Corin finally told me they were moving.
2- I asked our server to be moved as well. I made a new account in the new host, and asked if it was possible to make quarterly payments, as I used to do on Seion.
3- I was sent a 3-month invoice... except, that the price was for three months, but the date was for a single month.
4- IMMEDIATELY I sent a ticket asking for either an invoice with a correct date or, if not possible, a single month invoce. I'm still waiting for an answer.

So there it goes. The server is down because the host is fucking up with the invoice. Not because I "didnt pay something".

To add insult to injury, all of this took place while I was preparing for a week long work trip to Africa. I'm posting this from a shitty internet connection literally in the middle of nowhere.

New hosting suggestions are welcome.

It is not a matter of "knowing what one is doing". Bukkit did not release a stable version for 1.4 yet. They are still fixing the 1.4-bukkit bugs. Anyone who wants can install these beta versions, but they are still bug hunting, so screwing up savegames is a real possibility.

So yeah, we are waiting for stable 1.4 releases of:

2- coreprotect

Yup, you should be able to track blocks the same way that you track chests. For easiest results, just put any block in place of the missing block and inspect it.

I was thinking of an event to hold on the server, if there is interest from enough people.

From nothing to riches

We get X people (at least 6) to go on the server at the same time. For an extended time (8 hours? 6 hours?) we try to build a castle/temple/whatever in a completely non-developed area. We decide the area and the general theme beforehand. Maybe even gather materials in preparation. Everyone should be contributing on the same construction, not simply constructing independent buildings on the same area. If any mods are available, they can record the progress, make a timelapse, whatever :-)

Is there interest in this? I will (finally!) have a free weekend on the 1st and 2nd of December.

Rags to Riches Building Event

** Update **

Goal: To make a community building from scratch, through a building mini-marathon: 4-8 hours of cooperative building on the server.

People interested in participating:
- Claus
- Izak
- Xalxe
- Klazan
- Tbone
- Rhinox
- UT
- Maru

Suggested times:

Since I didn't get many PMs with time suggestions, I will suggest three time windows below, and you get to vote which you are able/prefer. Please PM me with your preferred time window, and also if you could make it on any of the others.

Time Window A: Saturday, December 1, 0:00GMT to 8:00GMT
Time Window B: Saturday, December 1, 9:00GMT to 17:00GMT
Time Window C: Sunday, December 2, 0:00GMT to 8:00GMT

Suggested Places

I will investigate some virgin places on the server and post suggestions here later. If you could PM me with your preferred Biome (Forests, mountains, etc), I will take that into account. I should decide the place on wednesday next week at the latest, so that we can gather material there. (I will try to build a small shack with an enderchest nearby to make transportation easier).

Let's make this happen!

I just read Maru's "OP" post, and I think this is a storm in a cup of water. I'm a pretty vanilla guy, and I don't think most of what Xalxe has done is as bad as Maru posts it. I'm currently writing a longer post with my opinions about the issue, but it will take some time. (It would be oh so good next time you guys decided to stir drama, you did that on a non-working day :-P). Please stand by.

Hmmmm. My opinions on this

1- We certainly do not need many more OPs anymore. I was OP'd by UA because he needed someone to keep an eye on griefers. But now that we have core protect, all we need an OP for is to help with whitelisting, checking coreprotect logs, and sometimes fixing glitches.

2- We do need an OWNER, who will set down base rules, admin mods, and sometimes do helpful magic (like creative-only items for contest prizes, etc.)

3- I do think that the OWNER of the server should have the final say of the server rules. I understand what Maru's said about "this being MS's server", but as far as I'm concerned, small internet communities benefit from "benevolent dictator" systems. Also, I fully trust Maru to be this benevolent dictator. When he asked if he should host the server in my place, I did not accept that without thinking about it.

4- As far as rules for "OP cheating" goes, Maru as the owner of the server has the final world. The rules that I used were much more lax than what the angry comments in this thread seem to imply. I did not think that there is any problem in an OP/Owner using fly/TP and other movement related commands at will for monitoring user activity. I think that "creativing in" items would be cheating. I also think that the Owner should have the discretion to break this rules whenever he thinks it is necessary. Once someone (was it Nom? Pizza?) told me he was having a really shitty day, and wanted to blow up stuff. We located a very distant village, and I gave him some flying powers to explode it. I see nothing wrong with a server admin making snap decisions like that.

5- I'm strongly against the "Check and Balance" system of keeping good morals. To me it is a drama ticking bomb waiting to explode.

6- Chevre is awesome

To be honest, no I was not aware. But that is my fault, because I was very very little online, and didn't have time to notice such things. :-(

I largely agree with what Rhinox said. Specially with what he describes as the OP roles: fly and TP to check if everything is going smoothly, and using creative powers sparingly for rewards and such.

My suggestions:

Normal Players: /home, /warp <warpname>
What OP can normally use as players: Any transportation command (Fly, TP, tppos, top, jump, etc), /inspect
What Admins can use to do Adminy stuff/special cases/contests: All commands, except WorldEdit.
Also, I don't really think that we need World edit. That would go into the "very rare circunstance" maybe.

Reasoning: We should have an experience as close as vanilla as possible. Warps are grandfathered in because we have already used them to colonize far away places. Flying and Teleporting should be perks for OPs, but other than that they should play by the same rules as regular players. Still, there are exception for every rule, so all commands should be "available", just in case. Also, editing large parts of the world at once via WE is not really what the server is about, in my PoV.

------------------**------------------------

Also, rages to riches is happening this weekend! I'm sorry for the delay, but I'm having a super busy week. Will try to post exact time and locations tonight or tomorrow night. Please prepare your resources :-)
(The location will probably be the cliffy island SE of vineland)

From Rages to Riches!

Given the responses from the players, and the fact that the server is currently down, I've selected timeslot "C":

GMT (Sunday 2) 0:00-9:00, EST (Saturday 1) 19:00-3:00 -- It should be time enough for the server to be up :-)

The selected location are the cliffs in the large island to the southwest of the vineland train station. I will try to build a small shack there with an Enderchest by Saturday.

The time window is pretty large so that everyone can try to be on a little at least part of the time :-) Let's see what we can build together! Will it be a glorious monument, or a chaotic patchwork?

If anyone could set up some sort of voice chat server for the event, it would be awesome.

What do enderchests do anyway?

Enderchests work like a portable extra inventory. The contents of all enderchests is the same, for each player, across the server.

So, you can fill your enderchest with cobblestone in spawntown, and take out that cobblestone from another enderchest in vineland.

Very handy for connecting storage of construction materials with construction places. Just keep in mind that you need a silk touch pick to pick up an enderchest.

Hey Maru,

When the new box is set up, give me an FTP (or better yet, normal user) account and I can probably do the automatic backup that I used to do during daddycheese time :-) -- Although removing some ocean to reduce file size would be wonderful.

Other than that, you guys talk too much. Go play some single player and post the screenshots here.

There was a thread on r/Minecraft with what is a valid door for a village. I'm pretty sure I linked that thread here somewhere.

Basically, you have 1 villager for every 3 valid doors. Villagers are counted within a certain radius from these valid doors, so if the villagers escape this radius, the doors produce more. Or something like that.

Creating a place full with villagers with dirt rat traps is not that hard... making a good looking apartment complex on the other hand is much more interesting :-)

I usually start my Single Player worlds by building farms for all the farmable objects, a restaurant, a magic tower. Then I go exploring some caves in search of dungeons. Build some beacon towers in interesting location within viewing distance of my town, and try to begin a rail system between these places. This is usually where I start to get lost/busy with other stuff, though. I had a really cool town going around in my beta1.8 world, but I stupidly deleted that one too when 1.2 came around.

IRC chat is so much better than the Dynmap one, it's not even funny :-)

Also, piracy is such an overused term, every time someone is inventing a new act to be considered "piracy". Beware of using it. For example, you bought a music CD, you want to copy one of the songs to your phone for listening. Is it piracy? Some people want you to believe it is. Anyway off-topic.

It's just that Minecraft has so much potential. You are likely not yet disillusioned with the vanilla game, which is totally fine, but I've been playing for 2+ years. The mods add whole new content and sets of rules, and just when you've "completed" one, there are a hundred more to try. And then you go back to the vanilla version to enjoy its simplicity, and the cycle begins again.

I don't know. It seems to me that the more mods you add to the game, the less time you spend actually building stuff.

The vanilla server has so many awesome buildings (the mazes, izak's caves, spawn town, the many different castles)... I've yet to see what has been built of AWESOME in the modded server...

(Or maybe this is a reverse-psychology attempt at getting you guys to post more pictures :-P)

Well, I will challenge my own question, though. ;-)

I've been watching Etho's let's play series on an FTB server, and he is doing something really cool with the mods: He is using some mechanism (don't know the name) to build giant stone blocks in the sky, and then using the mining laser and jetpack to mold those stone blocks into floating islands. Then he is using some railcraft to make jumping trains to connect the islands.

So there are certainly things you can do. Now go out there and do it! :-P

3- Find a super spawning location.

I'm not sure Feb 14th is the 2 year anniversary of the server. It is the 2 year anniversary of this thread, which, if I'm not mistaken, is the second Minecraft thread in MS

First MS Minecraft World -- ???? - ???? -- I was not there to see it. Supposedly, they had weird mods like flying machines and stuff.
Second MS Minecraft World (Art Gallery, etc) -- 1.2 up to 1.4 -- 13/feb/11 to 3/apr/11 -- (??? I thought it started earlier)
Third MS Minecraft World (MSTA!) -- 1.4 to 1.9 -- 4/apr/11 to 19/nov/11
Fourth MS Minecraft World (Spawntown!) - Release 1.0 onwards -- 19/nov/11 to current

Didn't realize we've had the current world for so long (or the initial world for so little)

You actually gave it to MME. Or better yet, MME had a personal server on DaddyCheese and we all kinda moved there.

2) who built the small hut built out of iron blocks with random rails and stuff inside. I happened across it while exploring and was wondering who it belonged to, if anyone. Seems like a pretty big waste of resources just sitting there :good:

1- The thing is that the world just got bigger :-) A while ago 5000 blocks was enough to see the entire world. That said, while people like big numbers, there are a lot of perfectly unexplored areas within a 3000 block radius of spawn (We found an untouched village 3000 from spawn).

2- Hut with random rails???????? :-( That is a legitimate Small Scout UFO :-(

So I played a bit of FTB single player last week. It is pretty fun, there are a lot of little nooks that could use more love (brewing beer and coffee, that is cool!)

Izaak, why do you need all that power?? It seems to me that the top level machines in IC2 are not all that useful, since you can make most everything with the lower levelled ones... I mean, I could power a diamond generator and a miner relatively well with a small tree farm and a simple generator.

The thing that gets me is that you need to be much more organized with those megapacks... My first day playing FTB I did a reasonably nice looking 1 floor home using some of the different minerals, and then I spend the next three days mucking around with macerators and batteries and miners and my poor house remained unfinished :-P It seems very easy to forget exactly why you need all those resources anyway.

Thaumcraft is surprisingly polished. It is one mod that really made me regret looking the wiki - finding out stuff using its internal system is very fun.

Steve carts look cool too, but I have yet to dive into that mod.

Turtles look extremely awesome, but with a high possibility of lagging a server to death with bad scripts.

Mystcraft is a great idea. The "portal central" aspect of it seems to be extremely underlooked (make a small stable age, and fill it with linking books to the nether, different parts of the overworld, and BAM you don't need warps anymore). The fact that ages can spawn TC dungeons with loot is OP to me though.

Portalguns are super OP. Moving spawners around? really? I mean, I could understand this if you had to build your portal gun with the ender star recipe, but you can get one relatively easily from TC+Mystcraft.....

I'll post some pictures later.

Have you looked at plant corss-breeding with IC2? I'm just diving in to that

Yeah, that is what I was talking about. You can apparently get coffee and beer from IC2 plant breeding :-)

Now imagine 50 of these miners and diamond generators set up side by side, to continually power them one generator isn't enough. Now imagine a solar panel that can output enough power to power all of these AND charge 10 batboxs to full in under a minute. Yeah, infinite power rocks.

Only if you can put all that power/constructions to good use. ;-)

tell thsi to klaz who is (again) the powerhouse of end-game content n our server, this time obtained from creating mystcraft ages and looting like crazy the thaumcraft stuff

Yeah... I hope they nerf this in the future, it seems a bit dull to just create multiple ages to get random endgame level loot.

Thaumcraft is awesome because it adds things really different to the game (the research gameplay, the way to use the crucible, flux mechanics) that still feel kinda "minecraft-y", and because it is super ultra polished. The Thaunomicom is a thing of beauty. It is a mod that doesn't just feel hacked in when you play it (*cough IC2 and xycraft*)

Ah, I see. Ok, here is a simple, non-spoily comment - but keep in mind that I, myself, have explored the mod very little yet.

The mod is mainly about creating magic items. You can create blocks with magical properties (they do cool stuff), or you can create magical items like magical coal that burns for longer, or magic wands (such as a digging wand).

How the mod works: Every "component" (item, block, etc) must be found out by doing research. You do research by sacrificing blocks at a research table. For instance, an arrow gives you research on "combat" and "flying". When you accumulate a certain number of research, you unlock a new part of the mod (a new knowledge).

To create a magical block or item, you need to do two things: 1- Craft it in a special crafting table, 2- infuse it with "essentia". Essentia are the same elements as in research, so you "sacrifice" items with that essentia to finalize the magical recipe. When you do that, you usually waste some essentia (which becomes flux). If you waste too much essentia, too fast, bad things happen, so you may want to limit reckless use of magic.

Finally, the Thaunomicon is VERY well explained. The description of each facet of the mod (items, mechanics, etc) is done in a very clear and concise way, it is almost like having a portable wiki in the game, so you never really get lost while playing around with TC.

I haven't seen any documentation yet (haven't looked for it), but Direwolf20's you tube video series, videos 9 and 10 I believe (sorting system part 1 and 2) does a VERY good job of explaining the Redpower tube system.

Actually the entire series (season V, uses the same modpack we're using right now) is really good.

If you guys feel it is necessary, I would be happy to make automated backups of the Vanilla server - I just need SSH access and read permission to the Vanilla world directory. :-)

In other worlds, which is the favored mode (in terms of not loading the server) of chunkloading? Is the default chunkloader (enchant table+gold+ender pearl) OK? I remember we had this discussion before, but I don't know if it is still current.

Yes and no. There were some biome generation changes, so the general landmass would be the same, but the older biomes will be different. The newer chunks should be the same.

The seed used is "numbat", and the spawn was artificially moved to its current location (It was originally closer to Maze 3, me and MME moved it to the mountains near the village).

tl;dr, claus can't have SSH without compromising the security of my business, but he can have FTP. ftp can be configured by M without me or corin assisting.

SFTP (more secure or some shiz?) can be done but corin will get mad at me if we do it because it makes a security risk in M's server.

Uuuh, that is not exactly true -- FTP passes password around in plaintext and is generally insecure. SSH can be made secure (else there wouldn't be Virtual Hosts). SFTP simply didnt work with commandline scripts last time we tried it :-(

Anyway, here is a no-account needed alternative: make a wgettable symbolic link to the latest world backup, and I will set up a script to download it every day. But if it is too much of a hassle, just forget about it, not a big deal.

So I spent some time this weekend on the FTB server doing this: http://imgur.com/a/HKeuV#0

There is now a quite neat wool farmer near spawn using a turtle. The turtle is programmed to go around the sheep shearing them, and bringing the stuff to a chest. It is smart enough to avoid leaving its base if it doesn't have enough energy, or if the chest is full. You can also flip a lever to tell it to stay in its place. It "should" survive server restarts and loading/unloading.

On the other hand, it is a bit slow, because the sheep take forever to eat grass and regrow their wool.

Anyway, feel free to grab some wool from that chest, if there is any! (if you drop by, also drop some fuel into the generator - Shirley the shearing turtle thanks you!)

Water updates cause a lot of strain in the server. This is true even in Vanilla Minecraft - you don't want a lot of water updating at the same time.

Watering/de-watering a quarry means tens of thousands of blocks updating in a very short span of time.

On a side note, what's up with the attitude, Maru/Klaz? It is a sensible rule, with a simple explanation that is not immediately obvious.

the first, why is everybody so insistent upon not using a lava-free age to mine in?

Another option is using IC2 miners. If you put a pump by the miner, it will put all the lava/water in nice canisters. It also doesn't leave a mess in the landscape.

What if you want the obsidian?

pump+miner and mix the water/lava you get. Or just minium+wood+automatic crafting table (need 2 minium stone for this)?

Sooooo... did anyone mess with my shearing turtle? It was replaced with a normal turtle. It was pretty cheap to replace, but still it was annoying.

Please, other than taking the produce, don't mess with the working of my farms. If you want to set up something similar in your place, I'd be happy to help.

It looks like I'll have to do some massive terraforming somewhere. To avoid this, Anybody know of a plains or meadow biome, not riddled with caves or ravines, with water nearby, and a non forested mountain biome bordering the plains on one side? I don't want it to be entirely ringed by mountains, and I do not want snow or deserts to be nearby.

Klaz, Behind the forests behind spawntown there is a largish meadow without ravines. I did not explore it fully, so I don't know if it borders any mountains. But it is reasonably close to spawn (around 300 blocks)

Also, I've finally finished the outer shell of my Vanilla Pyramid :-) No pictures yet, I want to at least make the throne room, and that will take a day or two of work. Any good soul who does not feel like playing in the vanilla server anymore would donate me a couple of diamonds?

Browsing the FTB dynmap:

Spoiler: two volcanos

Wow, this is a pretty awesome location, not THAT far from spawn. Is anyone building here currently? If not I might move my Thaumlab here.

Yup. I've spent about 5 hours working on a pyramid yesterday, and it is still not showing up.
