General Queue Information
Forum Rules and Guidelines

New players will probably want to start playing one game here before playing elsewhere on the site.

Reply in this thread indicating that you'd like to play ("/in for next" is a standard way of doing so).

You will get a PM from your game moderator when your game is about to begin.

Your name should be added to the first post within 24-48 hours. The waiting time for a game to start is currently 2-3 days, on average. Upcoming games will be full when there is one Inexperience-Challenged (IC) player, two Semi-Experienced (SE) player(s), and six Newbie players available. More/less ICs and SEs may be used in any given game to relieve a backlog on those specific areas of the Queue.

Player Requirements:

For purposes of Player Game Limits:

A
finished
game is one in which you are out of the game (by lynch or night kill) but the game is still being played by others.
A
completed
game is a game in which a winning side has been declared and the game is over.
For purposes of quantifying eligible completed games, two completed micro games will count as one completed game in another queue.
Replacing out of a game will count as a finished game if there was an acceptable level of participation.

Taking on too many Newbie games at one time, getting overloaded, and replacing out of those games can get you banned from the Newbie Queue!

Any player is, of course, welcome to join other Game Queues as they feel ready...

Moderator Requirements:

Potential moderators must have one completed game on this site as a Moderator. See the Modding Requirements wiki article for exact details.
Potential moderators MUST visit the Newbie_Game#Moderators wiki page to see what is required of Newbie game Mods.
Potential moderators must include links to their completed games
when they make the request to be added to the modding rotation
. If you have more than two games as a Mod, please link the latest two.
For purposes of quantifying eligible completed games, three completed micro games will count as one completed game in another queue.

Newbie Setup

Matrix6 (as designed by Cogito Ergo Sum):

Each Newbie Game will be given a setup that incorporates either one row or one column. The remaining six roles will be filled in by mafia goons and vanilla townies appropriately, to create a 2-mafia and 7-town setup. For example Row 1 (1 jailkeeper, 1 vanilla townie, 1 mafia goon) would add an additional 5 vanilla townies and 1 mafia goon, for a total setup of 1 jailkeeper, 6 vanilla townies, and 2 mafia goons.

All Newbie games should use the Natural Action Resolution system for determining Night action effects. Roleblocker actions will take precedence over Jailkeeper actions should that apply.

Yes, that's what it means. After two games, you're not really a Newbie anymore. The new ruling is good, to be honest. You should go to other queues and see what else we have to offer. Especially with the implementation of the new Micro game type, there's no more arguing that "bigger games take forever".

Depends on whether the ListMod thinks your activity was high enough to warrant it counting. My rule of thumb was 25+ posts for it to count.

Pretty sure this is wrong.

It is (Ms M's wrong, Sakura is correct).

A brand new player may play TWO games

from the start

as a Newbie player. Once you play one Newbie game, you may replace into as many existing games as you can handle.

After that, in order to /in for

a new game

in the Newbie queue, you must also play a game outside the Newbie queue and then /in as an SE once that game ends.

No one is allowed to play more than two games as a Newbie

from scratch

. If you just feel like replacing in for every game after the first two, knock yourself out.

First Post, Player Requirements states that you can only play one Newbie game as a never-before-played-on-site player. The other queues are governed by their own sets of rules. I'll see if I can find the site-wide "this is the max for each game type" list. Not sure if it's still valid tho.

Jason, this is wrong. This only applies to signing up for a 2nd Newbie game. This has ZERO bearing on whether someone with a Micro under their belt can replace into a Newbie game. Wisdom's 1134 is correct and fits with the question asked.

Guys, again, if you're not 100% sure that what you're saying is 100% correct AND 100% applicable to the situation at hand, please don't say anything. You're giving misinformation to players who are already a bit confused with the process. The answer can wait until the ListMod shows up.

If they haven't picked up their Role PM, proper procedure is to steal one from the front of the Queue, not advertise for the slot. Once the game begins you MUST advertise, but in confirmation it's faster to steal to get the game moving. Make sure you post who you're stealing and who they're replacing so singer can update the Queue and other Mods know that person is off the list.

Wake, singer updates the OP once every few days. When she does, she will add your name to the Newer Players queue and you will be in line to play a game when your turn comes around. Once you post an /in, there's no need to re-post.

aptil, your first post was fine. You cannot /in for a specific game in the Newbie queue - there are too many players with varying skill levels that have to be accounted for to make arrangements for everyone. You may /in for specific games in all (most?) of the other Queues however.

eagle, what rob was saying is that if you do get stolen as a replacement it will be during the first page or two of the game when nothing has happened, and therefore there won't be anything to catch up on.

Which is exactly why we do it that way. We don't want to force someone to have to catch up if they don't want to, so the only time that we can automatically take someone as a replacement is when the game is first starting. Once the game gets going, we only replace by volunteer.

AAAAAAND in that vein, stealing Edosurist to replace Dyslexicon, who was double-booked in 1427/1428.

As an aside, it's really piss poor that TWO SE's are bailing on a game at the start due to being overloaded - by definition at this point, an SE should know what they can/can't handle in terms of max number of games.

Please, if you are at your max, or even close/have something coming up IRL that will sap time away from a game, take yourself out of the Queues and don't make the Mods' jobs harder.

We are going back to the 6/2/1 Newbie/SE/IC setup normally used. If the queue gets too busy in any one area I will temporarily raise/lower numbers to clear backlogs in a reasonable time frame. Thanks to all the people who volunteered to SE. Since I'm cutting back to 2 SEs per game, we have plenty of SEs for now.

I feel like I owe everyone an explanation and an apology.

I teach at the college level, two classes this semester I've never taught before. I get up at 5 am, and usually don't go to bed before 10. In between, I'm doing mostly work. Since I've never taught these classes before the amount of work required is 3x what it normally is, and I am pretty much constantly behind. Consequently, my family/personal life (including MS.net) has taken a way-back back seat.

I'm not trying to make excuses, I just want everyone to know why it's been two weeks since I posted a new game. From now on if I get more than 3 or 4 days behind I'm going to PM Mr. Flay and ask him to update for me. That way you guys aren't waiting on my RL situation to lighten up, and I'm not feeling guilty for not getting you the games you signed up to play.

I'm very sorry guys, and thanks for not breaking out the pitchforks and torches.

Why would say no? Lots of players are in multiple games at once. Most mods just want to make sure that players who are new to the site won't flake, but most of them base it off of games played on Mafiascum.net. and have this idea that playing on other sites doesn't count. The restriction I quoted applies only to Newbie games. Lots of players either have experience, and are therefore allowed in more than one NEWBIE game, or they're playing in multiple game types (one newbie, a mini, a micro, etc.).

We restrict brand new players in Newbie games to one game because we have somewhere around a 30% flake rate for 1st time players (meaning they start playing and then just disappear). If those people are in multiple games, we now have multiple games to find replacements for. It's easier to restrict people to one game for their first to make sure they're going to like it and stick around.

And your comment about games taking 2 weeks for a game day is exactly the reason for the limit. If you get 12 days in and it's just too slow and you decide to quit, I'd rather you go and affect only one game as opposed to 2 or 3.

Your name should be added to the first post within 24-48 hours. The waiting time for a game to start is currently 2-3 days, on average. Upcoming games will be full when there is one Inexperience-Challenged (IC) player, two Semi-Experienced (SE) player(s), and six Newbie players available.
More/less ICs and SEs may be used in any given game to relieve a backlog on those specific areas of the Queue.
