359 file transfers and 5 minutes later, I backed up the whole world folder for the FTB server. Not bad at all. I'm going to see how long it takes to dump ALL the files now...

I thought we were just going with basic vanilla items and letting people explore mods for themselves? That's how I've got it set up currently, but it's not too hard to adjust it to do other stuff.

I'd be strongly against rolling back to before the update. I've done a LOT since then, both for myself and for the server. I wouldn't be against just scrapping the new stuff and going back to 5.1.1 though.

Why did we update before it was recommended, anyway?

Mods don't create lag just by existing. They may make the server take longer to start up and shut down, but they should only significantly effect lag if they're being used intensively.

Ok, so back to the vanilla server for a moment: Minecraft 1.5 has just been pushed to the launchers. Presumalby we want to wait until Bukkit/LWC/Optifine/other important stuff is updated, like usual?

Got a monitor which can go that fast? I get about 150 fps in my new home, most monitors cap at or before 120.

And Klaz, an HVSA costs 10532 (164 stacks +36) UUM. So it's expensive, but not THAT expensive. :P

Actually, there is a config'able option for limiting the total number of chunks a player can load with chunkloaders, but we never set it up properly. It's set much higher than it really should be, but we never came to any kind of agreement on a good number.

Meh. 512 is where it's at. If we used another number system, such as dozenal or octal, 500 would have no significance at all, but powers of 2 would still be important.

I had it as a waypoint but then I lost it. :?

I think it was around 1000 -900 or something like that? Both axis were pretty close to 1000 IIRC.

You could go to combustion engines, but unless you want to get into BC3/TE really heavily they're not worth your time. Maybe making some biomass with a fermenter would work better for you? You can make almost a whole bucket out of 1 sapling, and it gives 5 MJ/T in a Biogas engine.

There's solar power and electric engines too. They're a big investment if you don't already have a mass fab running, but you never have to worry about them once you've made them. Just throw them down and boom, free power.

Nope. RP2 machines only send items into a tube if there's a valid inventory for them to go to. So you DO get items stuck in the tubes, but only those that got pushed into them before the previous item filled up whatever inventory they were meant to go into.

Mhm. I'm concerned about it being overcrowded though. I've found with large numbers of players both the loot and the challenges are spread far too thinly and every area become "everyone rush in at once and see how many torches we can get down before we all die".

Ok, posting this here instead of the PMs because I think the answer may affect other's decisions:

If a consensus is reached that we would prefer to restart the world as necessary in order to keep up to date, is that with the understanding that we just start with basic starter kits, or that we get to bring over an inventory-load?

It's a nice idea incredibly poorly executed, with a ridiculous amount of content, most of which is underwhelming, some of which is actively terrible, and all of which would feel even more out-of-place in a modpack than it does when it's the only mod present.

Actually, even the GregTech config I made a while ago isn't perfect, but it's easy to fix - cut out the compression/maceration recipes for glowstone and a few other important blocks, scrap the Matter Fabricator, and it doesn't effect ANYTHING from vanilla or other mods.

Mystcraft is young and has yet to be properly optimised. It may be that in a few updates' time it will run perfectly smoothly.

Look at the configs I sent again. The harder solar panel recipe, like many others, can be disabled. And like I said, I'm even going to cut out the matter fab and the rolling machine/macerator recipes for glowstone and ores and stuff.

FTB Ultimate's default config isn't as "easy mode" as you can make it.

Go for it, just make sure once you've got the files on your machine you make a second copy of them and load up the world in single player to make sure it's not corrupted or anything.

Also maybe put the essential files (region files, player files, and config) on mediafire in case your hard drive implodes while you're updating it?

I plan to mess with the individual player.dat files to facilitate moving stuff over, so if (for example) we decide on bringing a hotbar full of stuff over, make sure that's on your hotbar ASAP.

They would work, but I'd say we should disallow any items which can be used to carry other items. Void tears, anyone? :P

Anyway, I'm thinking it would be easier if instead of moving player files, we had a bunch of chests near spawn and people can label them with their name and put the stuff they want to keep in them. One chest-full seems reasonable (it's less than an inventory-full), and it would be easier to manage that way.

Yup. Also having stuff in chests makes it many, many times easier for me to check for disallowed items, or stuff from mods that aren't coming over with us. Also it lets me link it to a starter kit system much more easily.

Rob, if you really think the game can't be played without IC2, ask dappyscroo about it. He's done just fine without touching IC2 on either of the SMP worlds he's played on, and aside from UUM, you can't reasonably say he was lagging behind, or getting any less out of the game.

Not sure if we're going to do the item-transfer thing yet, or something different. One problem with moving items over, no matter how few or many we allow, is that it is horribly, horribly unfair for those who mostly did IC2, TC3, or RP2.

Yeah, MagicLauncher is AMAZING for putting together your own sets of mods.

Also, Tinker's is better balanced than I thought - at a first glance Manyullyn seems like a kind of ultimate endgame god-material, but for picks at least cobalt is actually "better", Manyullyn is just more durable. :]

Also also if you haven't tried Applied Energistics or watched DW20's spotlights for it, I highly recommend you do so. For sorting systems, IMO it's much better than anything RedPower or GregTech could do.

ATTENTION, PEOPLE:


After some discussion we have decided that, in most cases, we will
NOT
be moving over items from the old world to the new one. If you feel you have something that should be bought over despite this decision (e.g. Rhinox and his saplings) feel free to PM me about it, but the answer will probably be "no".

The main reason for this is balance; many people, perhaps even the majority, have focused mostly on IC2, RP2, or TC3, none of which will be in the MafiaCraft pack. This means that if we were to let people bring items with them, those who focused on Thermal Expansion or another major mod would be at a massive advantage right from the start.

Instead, when you log in to the new world, you will be able to choose between three different starter kits. The first is an improved version of the one on the current server; it includes some tools, blocks, armor, food, etc., to help you get started. The second is a bundle of raw resources, including most ores that can generate, as well as some wood, stone, and coal. Finally, you can choose to receive almost an inventory-full of various building blocks and decorative items, most of which are full stacks. You may also, of course, choose to play without a starter kit and "punch your own damn trees".

Well, we need to get it working on the dev server, test it for a couple of days, get the pack approved, and prepare a world to be played in. We'll be releasing the code as soon as we have it - the server likely won't be up until a few days after that, but at least you guys can have SSP/creative worlds with the new modpack.

CameraCraft (when it gets updated) allows you to teleport through pictures if you have a charged Teleport Battery.

But given that it won't be in the D1 modpack and that one needs a continuous supply of ender pearls to be able to teleport (not to mention investing the time and resources to craft all the cameracraft stuff), surely we can not just rely on this as the primary method of transportation, right?
I think we'll probably all end up using it eventually - ender pearls aren't an issue once I've built another enderman farm. :P

For vanilla, just connect through the IP, but not many of us play there any more. For FTB, when the pack's available there will be instructions for how to get it through the FTB launcher. It should be a matter of hitting a few buttons and typing in a code.

Download it, back up your current minecraft.jar, then put that in user/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/bin. Run minecraft. You should be in 1.4.7.

Edit2: Yeah, Zan abandoned his mods way back in Beta 1.2, and they were taken over by Lahwran, who abandoned them in Beta 1.8. Depends what it is that adds it and what it does in that mod. And I think you need quite a bit of copper for TE and Forestry stuff? Those could be too easy if you can turn petroleum into copper. :?

Also, we have a few problem mods, unless Maru already got proper permissions:

- Damage Indicators and Traincraft need specific permission to put them in a modpack.
- iChunUtil doesn't seem to say ANYTHING about modpacks; we may get away with it since iChun says anyone can use GravityGun or PortalGun in a pack and you NEED iChunUtil for those, but it's worth checking out.
- Factorization and SecretRooms require us to notify the modmakers. I'm going to go deal with these now.

Edit: sent notifications to neptunepink and AbrarSyed, and put them in the txt. Still need to resolve the other three if we don't already have permission.

Anyway, almost all the modmakers we might otherwise need to contact have explicitly granted permission for private FTB packs - have a look at this.

Anyway, I'll PM you what I've got, in the format they want it. The ones marked ">>>NEED PERMISSION" should be the only ones we still need explicit permission from the modmakers for.

Point still stands - at most it takes 30 minutes to compile the vast majority of the permissions we have.

Small update on FTB stuffs:

Apart from the petroleum issue/non-issue, the mods seem to work together just fine. Currently we're waiting on Klaz sending me the official MultiMC instance, Maru gathering the few permissions we're still lacking, and me taking a look over the configs - then we're pretty much ready to submit the pack. Private packs go live on Thursdays and preparing the map shouldn't take long, so if everything goes to plan the server should be up some time this weekend.

Oooookay, so I haven't read everything in great detail, but I'll say a few things anyway.

1. I will pretty much go where the community goes, restarts or not, vanilla or modded. Just not TerraFirmaCraft.

2. I am against a vanilla server restert FOR NOW. There are still rumblings of a Biomes Update in the future; one that will massively change world generation. I say we restart when, and only when, an update like that comes along.

3. WOOOOO TIERCE! This stuff is much better than Voltz.

4. Huh, hardcore co-op server? That's... different. Maybe I'll try it out later.

Trying to run the modpack through MultiMC and Forge isn't downloading the files properly. Might just be a server problem on their end though - I'll try again in a bit.

So it looks like it's just one file that files.minecraftforge.net REALLY doesn't want to give me. Anyone got a copy of deobfuscation_data_1.5.1.zip? Ideally from the build we're using.

ABOUT THE FTB SERVER:


Because we're submitting MafiaCraft as a Private Server pack (not Private Public), we're not allowed to publicly distribute the pack code - we have to give it out privately. So if you want to be able to use the pack as soon as it's available (hopefully tomorrow if Maru gets me the damn screenies, otherwise next thursday), put your MS name on this:

The trouble with an independent mod is that there's a really, REALLY strong movement away from anything that modifies base files (and has been for a while). If it was forge, then yeah, I'm not sure why it's not updated already. :?

Still nothing from the modpack team, guys. But I think two of the three are PST, so it might be coming later.

Unfortunately, since we don't have a VPN for the server any more, there may be issues if everyone rushes at once - if the code becomes available when it's late afternoon/evening for east america, we may not be able to whitelist everyone immediately.

The FTB server? We're currently waiting on the FTB team to review the permissions and publish it to the launcher. From there M will need to move the files over to the proper FTB server from the dev server we've been testing/building/messing around on, and then we can open the world up to you guys.

Because of what you guys said, we scrapped the village idea. What we have this time is a spawn platform with some CC monitors for important stuff, like rules and credits (the latter of which we're legally obliged to have there) and a small clearing in the middle of a forest, lit up so that

creepers don't annihilate the aforementioned credits board. The starter kits are there because people want them, and they're completely optional - if you don't like them, don't take them. Even stopping to read all the monitors at spawn, at the very most it will take you 2-3 minutes to run off into the forest, at which point all this has literally no effect on how you play the game.

Regarding the issue some of you are having with the pack (launching as vanilla): I've asked the FTB team about it, but based on some recent forum posts it looks like this is an issue on their end that occurs somewhat inconsistantly and they're still working to resolve.

FTB team wrote a post about the issue, seems it's quite common:

When I get your pack, either new or an update, I check the permissions, then I have to build it for the repo. The repo needs the zip file with the instance in a specific place. It also needs that images in another folder. Then it needs an xml file with all the information about the pack so that launcher can display it. So, I get all that, for 20+ packs that need to be uploaded, and upload it all to the repo. This usually adds up to a gig or more of data, so it takes some time. When it's on the repo, 2 things are done. First the repo copies the files to the other download repos. For a gig of data this takes some time, though not all that long, maybe an hour or three. But then, or maybe first, it calculates the MD5 hash of the zip and stores it on each server. I usually wait a while to upload the xml files so this process has some time to happen and the launcher hopefully doesn't try to download something that isn't there.
So here's what can go wrong. If the zip file hasn't gotten copied to the other servers yet, the launcher will try to download it, download nothing, then download the vanilla minecraft jar and just run that. Alternatively, if the zip is there, but the MD5 isn't, the launcher downloads it, but then can't validate that it is the correct file and doesn't unzip it. Then same as above it downloads vanilla and runs that. Both these problems are solved by just waiting for the repo to catch up.
I have extended the upload period to end friday(see above post) for exactly this reason. I will try to do some more thorough checking to make sure both the zip and MD5 are in the right places before updating the xml and letting the launcher update each pack.
Sounds to me as if it should be fixed by now. If it's still launching vanilla for you, try taking these steps - they fixed it for me when I had trouble earlier.

1. Remove MafiaCraft from the launcher. You do this exactly like how you add it, but just hit "remove" instead.
2. Close the FTB launcher
3. Delete your entire "MafiaCraft" folder in your "FTB" directory. If you have saves, textures, or anything else you want to keep, back them up OUT of the FTB folder.
4. Re-open the launcher, add the pack, and let it download again.

I believe Immibi has a microblocks mod, similar to redpower microblocks, which might be worth a look for next time we update. Not sure how much it interfaces with mods, though, and it's not really worthwhile if you can only cut up vanilla blocks.

Also villager trading makes them obtainable in VANILLA survival, but that's not it either.

We amended the first starter kit to have some enchanting stuff, since it was looking pretty underpowered. That includes some bottles of enchanting.

I got my blaze spawner home just fine, so I doubt it was me. If it was then the gun must have bugged out and duplicated it somehow.. If nobody else gets it first I'll get on and break it in the morning.
