Like I said before, this is definately happening but we're having trouble keeping this thread bumped. We should come up with a name for this thing, I think that will keep us engaged.

I guess, technically, it could. But that's not what we had in mind.

The idea was to play mafia casually while doing other things. We start with a set-up and role assignments and then we split off to play boardgames or whatever. Discussion can continue as people like and the scum can try to serreptitiously day-talk if they feel the need. The mod keeps track of votes on a dry-erase board and, when lynch is reached, collects night actions. Whenever the game ends, we re-assign roles and start anew. I just really like the idea of being involved in non-mafia activities and suddenly someone sees you accidentally wink at someone else and so throws a vote on you.

The fact that we'll have two separate apartments for this meet adds a funny twist: the game wouldn't require us all to be in the same area. So, for example, if some people are up at the guest suite making lunch, they may get a call to the effect of, "Hacker Huck just got two more votes, and tell him to bring down more beer."

The situation has changed a bit and I may not have the second vacant apartment available. So we may be back to the prospect of finding prime-time gaming space elsewhere but I think that's fine.

Aug 14 is looking like the best weekend based on 9 entries.

There are only two people who can't make the 21st: someone who also can't make the 14th, and Llama, who is ~80% anyway. Later is better for hosting, especially now that my circumstances have changed. Let's pencil it in for the weekend of the 21st.

How many of those attending will get motel rooms? Will any of you have extra space in them? Who's chipping in on the guest suite? I can get prices on the nearest motels if people are interested.

The suite is a 1-BR apartment with a king-sized bed and a pull-out couch. So four people comfortably, and more on the floor if people don't mind that. Also, realize that late-night gaming and early morning cooking mean that sleep may be hard to accomplish on the pull-out. It's $60/night. Whether we get it for 3 or 4 nights will depend on when people plan to arrive. I can let some broke people camp out on my floor and someone who is both broke and short could sleep in my van.

I live in an apartment complex, so tent camping in the lawn is not an option but there are some nearby undeveloped areas and wooded parks if you're hippie enough to guerilla camp. I can and will point out some great camping spots in the outlaying forest for before/after the meet if you're interested.

I think we should work out a loose itinerary for the weekend. I'm sure gaming will be the focus but it might be nice to have a meal out somewhere and maybe arrange carpooling for activities during the day: museums, parks, downtown, the coast, the falls, or whatever. What are people interested in doing, other than playing games?

There's lots of good hiking right in Portland. Forest Park has more miles of hiking trails than any other city park. Kelly Butte is pretty big and untamed, and it's only five minutes or so from where I live. Springwater Trail is more urban, but it's fifty miles long. And of course there's plenty outside the city too.

There are lots of good breakfast spots. No visit to Portland is complete without a trip to the 24-hour Pancake House, though this is normally accomplished at 4am, after the bars are closed and the after-parties are winding down. I suspect that most of us will not be awake as early as Zorb, though.

A trip to Saturday Market should be included. Probably we could take the max downtown, visit the market and the mezzanine, visit Powells, and go to the Tugboat (best micro-brew in Portland) all in the same afternoon.

I haven't reserved the suite yet, so not that set. How far in advance do you need to buy them?

Noted, Zorb. I'd like to hear everyone's ideas on what/when and see where everything falls. I haven't put much thought into a schedule myself but it seems appropriate for Saturday gaming to be the focus, with stragglers gaming on Sunday. I like the idea of the casual brewery trip on Friday, especially if some of the under 21 crowd want to hang out at the suite. That way people can join either scene as they trickle into town and then we bring them together.

I want the schedule to be as loose as possible, so people are free to break off into whatever groups and do whatever they want, so I think the best way to go about it is to plan a few things that we'll do together and leave most of it entirely open. Friday evening meal is probably good to keep low maintainance and piecemeal, like Papa Murphy's or something. Saturday food should be the most prep-heavy. I like the idea of breakfast/brunch/lunch out before people leave on Sunday. I'm also looking forward to a Sunday-evening hangers-on party for people who live closer or don't have to work on Monday.

I'm really excited about this.

How large of folding tables are you thinking and how many?

Not really sure. Probably 1-2 of the rectangular office style, or 2-3 round/square card tables. More if my apartment is also vacant. As we get closer to the date, it will be handy for people to RSVP with guest numbers so that we can know what sort of seating we'll need, but I doubt we'd use a whole rack of chairs.

My friend Teo just hitched from OR to PA and back a few weeks ago. My friend/lover Danielle is a petite 22 year old girl that has hitched a few thousand miles, some of it by herself. She's one of four women I know that have gone on lone hitchhiking trips. I've hitched more than 30,000 miles in my lifetime.

Good point. Bay area to Portland on I-5 is probably the easiest hitch in the country. A ride board could get you here in a day. Your thumb might take two days, but there's plenty of good camping spots.

• Crash space will be first come, first served. I'm asking people to get accomidations if they can and save the other spots for people who need them. The guest suite sleeps 4, plus floor space. The "other" apartment is where I'm currently living and probably will not be vacant but there is a comfy couch and additional floor space. I cannot guarentee that there will be comfort, but there will probably be room. Bring blankets. Also, is your wife a gamer? She might be bored if she's not.
  
• The practicality of traveling with a newborn is for you to judge. As a seasoned traveler with kids, I will tell you that I usually wait until they are at least sleeping through the night.
  
• People will be drinking for sure. If people are going to smoke, there will be designated areas. I'm assuming nobody's going to be mainlining smack or snorting blow off of strippers or whatever. I'd like the focus to be on the gaming and socializing but, for the most part, this event is meant for adults. I doubt we will recreate any scenes from Animal House, but things might get a little rowdy during the evenings. Obi-wan will be present but we normally expose him to a lot of things that would make most parents cringe.
  
• I don't care how you feel about the model but, if you hate me, then be aware that this meet is going to change that.

You've got a good mix of games. Strategy/intellectual are probably best for this crowd. Arkham Horror sounds interesting though I've never played it. I like Carcassone, Dominion, and Dungeon Escape. Settlers is always good and I have a fully playtested (and excellent) set of house rules for team play, but all we've got is the original game plus Cities & Knights 4p. Risk: LotR sounds fun. I was really surprised at the lack of Axis & Allies/Shogun/Fortress America on your have and wish lists; they are great games.

Parking is going to be a pain in the ass. I need to figure out solutions. Basically, I'll need to find a place where multiple people can park and then run a shuttle if it's not within walking distance. We have two vehicles and three spots. I'll probably move one of my vehicles so as to have two guest spots, which will be reserved for people who don't mind shuttling other people to the parking area(s).

There's a nearby cul-de-sac with "Parking by permit only" signs. I need to find out what that means and how to get permission. If that's a possibility, we can fit several cars there without needing a shuttle.

Here is all of the work involved in hitchhiking: carrying a backpack, holding your thumb in a visible position, carrying on an interesting conversation, and

doing some driving. So, yes, more work than sitting in a bus, but not by much. Also, the Cali-Portland I-5 corridor is the easiest hitch in the country. By far.

But yeah, I suppose bus tickets would work as well. Too bad the Green Tortise isn't running anymore. It was a SF-Portland express (101->26) owned and operated by hippies. Basically a party on wheels with cheap ticket prices.

Friday:

From around 2pm until sometime in the late afternoon or early evening, we will be getting the guest suite set up, doing shopping, etc. Consensus seems to be that a bar meetup on Friday is good. I'm assuming we will leave for that between 4 and 5:30pm, be back a 3-4 hours later. Someone will be available at the guest suite if people want to show up and get settled in, or they can meet us at the bar. By mid-evening we should all be back at the suite having a good time.

The complex is repaving the parking lot on Friday, but will be finished by 7pm. So expect a lot of confusion if you expect to park a car here on Friday before then. Sorry.

Saturday:

In-house cooking. BBQ day. Lots of gaming. Saturday is the time to show up if you can only come one day. I'd rather not plan it too specifically, though I'd be interested in running a no-to-low stakes poker tournament in the evening if we have enough players.

Sunday:

Since Al isn't coming, we will not have a BBQ on Sunday. Some people will have burned out or headed home. The evening should be mellow. Probably a good time for a RPG one-shot, a movie night, or something that's more oriented to an intimate group.

Damn, I suck at making itineraries. Anyone planning on arriving between 4pm and 10pm on Friday and who wants to meet us at the bar should PM me a cell-phone number and I'll text mine back.

Parking:

Still haven't figured this out but we have the Park-n-Ride as a fallback and I have a couple of other ideas to check out. It may not be much of a problem because we're intending to move our van which means we can park two extra cars after 7pm on Friday. People who are arriving earlier or staying longer can be shuttled or take public trans.

Chairs:

We got it figured out. Miyu, you still might want to bring a couple, just in case. No harm in having extras.

I really wanted to come visit you guys for this, but Caffwagon depleted what little funds I had leftover.

If that happens, it will get larger and more fun with age, and I'll have a big house by this time next year. I am off work until after Scumstorm. The poorly-planned camping trip I mentioned was cancelled, so even more of my Portland peer group are going to be showing up at some point over the weekend. This includes Josh, the game collector, who said he'll be bringing some of his favorites. There are a few people coming who are not avid gamers but they are intellectuals so I figure they'll mingle just fine.

There will be at least one gay person in attendance, which seems important to some of you.

Well... the storm is over. Zorb was the last one out the door, late this morning. It was epic fun, many games were played and much silliness ensued. I slept less than eight hours over the entire weekend and enjoyed every waking moment. Here are some highlights...

Sudo was kissed with so much passion that he fell down and cried. Brandi got so drunk before noon that she puked in her mouth. SP neraly killed all of us, but we survived because someone was always awake. IS proved himself to be the luckiest person at the meet. Zorb simultaneously defeated three people in a game of Illuminati without rolling any dice. Also, I'm pretty sure Miyu killed Hacker Huck.

I very much enjoyed meeting every one of you. I'm not sure if 2011 will be convenient to do so, but I will definately be hosting the sequel eventually.

For those who haven't played, here's a synopsis. It starts as an exploration game where each player controls a character poking around in a classic haunted mansion. During the early phases, the goal is to build one's stats and keep the whole group strong. As play progresses, certain events require players to roll dice to determine whether a "haunt" has occured. Once the haunt starts, one player becomes the traitor. He goes into another room and reads some special secret rules for the scenario. Meanwhile, the other players read their own secret scenario rules and plot against the traitor. Then he comes back and play continues until one team achieves its secret win condition.
