Background:
This world was like any other world. Inhabited by men that are trying to find their place or station in life. On the most part, they lived peacefully and in harmony. That is until the Dark Goma fell from the sky. Children began being born with a “power”. Like a fingerprint, no two powers were alike, but sometimes their results were the same. Some were minuscule and weak like changing apples into oranges, others so devastating that they began to change and shape the face of the landscape. It was discovered that the closer one was born to the Dark Goma the stronger the power they were born with. Wars began over the land surrounding the Dark Goma and many died in the struggle. After many years of battle a coalition of men (later called the “Torgens”) were able to secure the area and founded the city of Surico. To appease the masses a system was developed to have babies born close to the Dark Goma and a government was developed to ensure, enforce. and protect this system. Part of this process is called The Naming. After an individual’s power is discovered, they are given a title to be used formally. The system seemed to be expectable to all and kept the peace thriving in the land. Of course, like most things this too became corrupt.
The system, which was governed by The Council (a collection of politicians that represented the lands surrounding Surico) became influenced by monetary and political pressures versus public needs or interest. The more money and authority a family had, the closer a baby could be born to the Goma. Eventually the Goma was not open to the general public and most of the city was closed to the general populace, save the Trade District located directly next to the Inner City District (home of The Council’s leader, The Giver). Again unrest and civil disobedience began.
A group called The Converters (named after its leader) was formed and became the biggest threat to Surico and The Council. Disruptions and violent skirmishes began to spread in the lands around Surico between The Converters and the Council’s enforcement brigade. Until now, these clashes have been contained to outside of the gates and have not threatened The Council or the residents inside Surico’s gates. However, The Converters were able penetrate secured locations in the Inner City District. The Inner city is also home of many of Surico’s higher level politicians, craftsmen, and wealthy merchants. Now a new bloody struggle has come to a head, as The Giver and one of the two of her trusted guards have been found strangled to death.
