I don't see any need to subvert the hurt/heal mechanism. Just try to concentrate your fire on people who are already hurt, rather than wearing everyone down at once. That will make it harder for scum to suddenly kill townies using secret damage.

As several people have said, a fast-paced game helps the town even more than normal. Expect scum to try to slow it down by lurking.

This game is pretty much vanilla nightless with a strange voting mechanic. As long as we don't bring people down to low HP without killing them, or take so long that the scum get enough "rage points" to kill someone with lots of HP, the town can completely control the order people die in. Vanilla nightless is usually biased towards the town; there's no reason we should lose.

It looks like the once-per-24-hours limit isn't enough to seriously slow down the speed at which the town can kill people, but if there are a lot of people sitting around doing nothing or (even worse) healing everyone who gets hurt, it might be a problem. Automatic healing is a
horrible
idea and will just slow the game down, which gives the scum an advantage.

they let the town completely control the order in which people die
. That's exactly what the scum doesn't want to happen.

Partially right, partially wrong. People who are talking more tend to look scummier, just because they have more opportunities to say something you disagree with. If you haven't learned to correct for that, you should go after the lurkers first. If you have, you should go after the scummy people, who will usually be the lurkers anyways.

One thing I am not clear about in the rules is how time works in this set-up? In otherwords, do we have 24 hours from Mr. Flay's post to hurt/heal someone 1 time? Tomorrow by 7am? Also if we dont use a hurt/heal does it carry over to the next 24 hour period?

I am gonna reread everything now and try to get a better handle on how this set-up works, thanks for any advice. :)

Healing up people who aren't under active attack is a good idea. Healing up people who have a real wagon on them is counterproductive.


People arguing about voting systems, random hurting, etc, etc, need to keep in mind two indisputable facts:
1) In the end, the thing that will determine whether the town wins or loses is
the order in which people die
. Nothing more, nothing less. We need to make sure scum die before townies as much as possible.
2) The scum get more influence over who dies with every week that passes.

#2 means that, if they're smart, the scum will be trying to slow the game down. Keep an eye on who is acting to slow the game down, and who is acting to keep it moving. If we're willing to punish people for slowing the game, that will mean the scum will have to help keep the pace up, which will be good for the town.

Here's some math:
The scum get a kill roughly every 2 weeks (more if we bring people down to low HP and leave them there a lot, less if we kill several scum early).
The town gets as many lynches as we want.
There are probably at most 5 scum.
If scum get close to a majority, they can heal to prevent the town from killing in a reasonable time, and force a win using rage. Call that -2 mislynches.
So, depending on our lynch speed, our number of mislynches before we go lose goes down:
If we kill once a day, we get around 8 mislynches.
If we kill once every 2 days, we get around 7 mislynches.
If we kill once every 4 days, we get around 6 mislynches.
If we kill once every 7 days, we get around 5 mislynches.
If we kill once every 10 days, we get get around 4 mislynches.
If we kill once every 14 days, we get get around 3 mislynches.


So... how much deliberation before each kill do you think is worth losing a mislynch?

I just did the complete math a couple of posts ago. You're underestimating how powerful 1 kill / 2 weeks is.

Walt: Perhaps you don't understand the theory behind counting mislynches. It's quite common as a way of gauging just how much trouble the town is in.

We start with ~8 mislynches.
Lynch a townie: -1 mislynch.
Lynch a scum: +1 mislynch.
Scum get a kill: -1 mislynch.
When the number of mislynches remaining goes to 0, town loses.

Obviously, we want to lynch correctly, so our mislynch buffer goes up. But it's important to know how many mislynches are left because it tells us
how badly we could possibly do at scumhunting and still not lose
. In this case, the slower we go, the more kills scum get, the less buffer have, and the better we will need to be at scumhunting to compensate.

Intent to heal is fine. But I have a proposal: Seraphim and zwet (or Juls) should get together and agree that, since they are going to cancel each other out anyways, neither of them will hurt/heal me so they can both use their actions elsewhere.

I don't think all the Ophanim need to claim... but it will be fairly obvious to the scum who they are anyways: they're the people not hurting or healing anyone. And the normal drawback of outing power roles, that they will be nightkilled, doesn't really apply; scum will have to burn 2 weeks worth of accumulated rage to kill an Ophan from full+1 HP, and stand a chance of getting caught by another Ophan while doing so.

Any Ophan who finds himself under fire should almost certainly claim before he gets down to the point where the scum can easily finish him off.

My strategy in a normal game goes something like this:
1. Pick someone. It doesn't really matter who.
2. Build a huge bandwagon on them, just short of lynch.
3. Stop and look at everyone's reactions.
4. Figure out who is obvtown.
5a. If your target isn't obvtown, get them lynched, then go to step 6.
5b. If your target is obvtown, go to step 8.
6. You have a lynch! Reexamine the previous day's bandwagons in light of the new known alignments.
7. Figure out who is obvtown.
8. Pick someone who isn't obvtown, then go back to step 2.
I'm having to modify it because of the heal/hurt mechanic... putting a bunch of damage on someone before deciding they're town is Bad.

Yes.

Problem #1: There may be up to 4 scum left.

Problem #2: Say there are 5 confirmed townies and 4 scum left alive. The 5 townies hurt one of the scum, while the other 3 scum heal that player. That scum hurts a townie, and the other scum use their rage points on the same townie. Town does a net 14 damage a week; scum does a net 7+5 = 12 damage a week. If scum have any rage built up, they're going to win that race. So the town might need extra players in endgame to force a win even if all the scum are known.

Some of the things Walt has said are really setting off alarm bells, particularly an early comment about power roles. Now he's encouraging the town to just lynch randomly which I find even worse. I was seriously considering the possibility that he's drunk every time he posts, but that would involve a

You know, just before I answered roflcopter's post, I was thinking about how hard Shinnen_no_Me had fought against concentrating fire. I remembered that some other people had taken the same stance... and lo, one of them is Kinetic.

As several people have said, a fast-paced game helps the town even more than normal. Expect scum to try to slow it down by lurking.

Best way to test an Ophan is have them try to hurt and prove they can't. That can prove they are an Ophan, but it can't prove they aren't. I doubt any of our claimed Ophans are totally lying though; it's more likely we have a scum Ophan. Still, it's worth doing the test.

I deny the existence of a merry gang, but if there was one the answer would be "Damaging Shinnen before you did".

I'm not quite sure why Kinetic is choosing this moment to go berserk and claim credit for the Shinnen lynch. From the ferocity I'd say it's been weighing on his mind for a while. I can't tell if it's because he's scum frustrated that his bus didn't work, or town frustrated that he's not being recognized. I'm leaning very slightly towards the former.

I'm not sure! roflcopter and ABR going after Kinetic instead of Walt feels weird to me for some reason. Walt is completely blinded by OMGUS and tunnelvision, and chose a weird time to come out as a Seraph... particularly since, if he's a Seraph as he claims, it will take a little while longer to kill him. And now there's the threat of a heal/hurt war...

The scum can daytalk. That's important to keep in mind. This sort of pattern happens when the scum can daytalk.

Walt has been pushing the idea that roflcopter and Nuwen are confirmed for a while now, which doesn't fit with his Seraph claim - unless he was trying to set it up so that he would be "confirmed" when he claimed Seraph. His early concern with power roles does suggest he has one. (Although I don't think Seraphim should actually count as a power role, I guess he does.)

There's some weird stuff going on with roflcopter. It's nagging at me.

I need to think some more, try to pull out some connections here.

I think people are overestimating the importance of Seraphim (the role, not the player).

A Seraph has 1/3 hp than a Cherub.
A Seraph does 1/3 more damage per day than a Cherub.

That is not much of a power role.

I haven't read the first game, but I'm guessing the two HUGE spikes in that graph are the result of discussion after the scum dumped a bunch of rage on some townies.

In that game the scum rage dump was week 4... let's try to have already won by then. :)
