Mini 610 - Ace Attorney Mafia

Moderator: Vollkan

(All players unfamiliar with the Ace Attorney series of video games, or who just want to freshen up their knowledge, are advised to check out Court Records)

Game Status:
Over

Welcome to the City Courthouse everybody. Sorry it's so early in the morning, but we are in a bit of a rush to get things organised. There was a murder last night, you see, and we need to ensure that whoever was responsible is brought to justice.

My name is Vollkan and I work here at the court as a general odd-job man, but I've been told to prep you all as to exactly why you've been called here today, and as to what will be required of you. Last night, a Mr Larry Butz was found dead in his apartment. As per the new procedural requirements, the trial has to take place today - and the details of that are still being finalised at the moment.

The trial will begin shortly, but first let me first give you some general information about the court system.

Each day will consist of a trial, lasting 24 hours in court-time (which is equal to 3 weeks real world-time). Anyway, some recent ridiculous...*ahem* er "reforms" of the court system have resulted in a requirement that
every trial must end with a conviction
.

Let me go over the trial process in detail. This is
very important
and is probably like nothing you've ever experienced before:

Each trial has somebody designated as the Defendant. That person will be convicted at the 3 week deadline
automatically
unless somebody else is convicted instead. The effect of this is that somebody will always be convicted by the end of the day.

The outcome of the trial is controlled by the Jury. The Jury each day consists of a number of select individuals from the courtroom. Each day, the number of persons designated as Jurors shall be equal to a majority of persons in the courtroom (excluding me because I'm just a nobody). For a person other than the Defendant to be convicted there must be a unanimous verdict among the Jurors that somebody else is guilty. The Jurors may convict the Defendant before deadline if they want, but they will need a unanimous verdict to do so. Thus,
every
Juror must vote for a person if they want to convict them.

The one exception to this rule is if the person being voted for is a Juror. If the Jury wishes to convict a Juror, there must be a unanimous verdict among the other Jurors and a ratifying vote from a non-Juror (or a self-vote from the Juror in question). Non-Jurors may cast ratifying votes whenever they wish, but their votes will not be able to achieve a conviction without unanimity among the other the other Jurors.

To help you remember, I've been told to hand out this brief summary to all of you:

1. Every day phase consists of a trial.
2. Each trial must end with a conviction.
3. Any person convicted will be executed.
4. Each trial has a Defendant.
5. If no conviction is reached by the end of the 3-week trial deadline, then the Defendant will be convicted regardless.
6. The Jury, which consists of a numerical majority of the living players are the only players who may vote to convict.
7. In order to convict somebody, a unanimous verdict must be reached. This requires that all members of the Jury individually vote for a single person, be it the defendant or somebody else.
8. The Jury may convict a Juror if there is unanimous agreement among the other Jurors and a ratifying vote from a non-Juror (or a self-vote from the Juror in question).
9. Once a convicted person is executed, it becomes the night phase.

The Rules:

1: This is a game. Having fun is a requirement.
2: Please bold your votes. For example,
Vote: RandomPerson
. Votes that are not bolded will not be counted.
3: If you wish to change your vote, bold an unvote for the player you were voting and vote for the new player you are going to be voting. For example,
Unvote, Vote: ScummyPerson.
If you do not unvote, your vote will
not
be counted.
4: Lynching requirements are set out in the previous post. Once a lynch is decided, the decision is final. Feel free to continue posting until the thread is locked, but unvoting, etc. before I check the thread will not prevent the player from being lynched.
5: If you get lynched or killed, you are
dead
. Post nothing; not even a “Bah!” post.
6: Any questions, concerns, desires for me to prod, whatever PM me.
7: Never quote
anything
that I PM to you.
8: Treat this game as a commitment and be considerate of me and your fellow players.
9: No small or invisible text, editing of your posts, etc.
10: Do not discuss this game outside the thread at any time, except if your role specifically allows you to do so.
11: You must confirm
your role
to me by PM.

12: If you do not post for 3 days without notifying me that you will be away, you will be prodded. Not posting within 48 hours of the prod or getting prodded more than 3 times may result in replacement.

13: Each day will have an automatic deadline of 3 weeks. I may extend it in very special circumstances.

15:
Red
[/color] is my colour. Don't use it.

Yep. I would have done so sooner, but I am caught up with exams (just tomorrow to go now!!)

Also: ChiefSkye has informed me that she will be away for a few days.

Theo has not picked up his previous post. I know that he has access problems (can't get to MS at work), so I will give him a few days, and then look at replacing.

Babygirl, Malth, and Joubert are being prodded now.

Also, @Natirasha, your most recent vote has not been counted since you voted Populartajo who, like yourself, is a non-juror. I counted your unvote, but not the vote.

Important correction
: The deadline dating I have been using has been messed up. The initial deadline was for 6:15pm "Saturday 29 June", which was actually a Sunday (I wrote Saturday by mistake).

The one-week extension I have makes that Sunday 6th of July NOT "Saturday 5th" as I have on this page's votecount, or "Sunday 5th" as I had on previous votecounts. Apologies for any confusion. Basically, there are 40 hours to go, rather than 16.

To avoid any further confusion:
The deadline is Sunday July 6 at 6:15pm GMT+10

A hurried panic swept the courthouse as the Jurors tried to reach a decision before deadline. As the sky grew dark outside, they each submitted their votes one-by-one to Vollkan, awaiting him to announce the verdict.....

Vollkan: "Ahem...Attention all! ATTENTION! *smashes a gavel* Image
That's better. After careful deliberation, the jury has decided by unanimous verdict that the Defendant,
Rishi
is:
NOT GUILTY
. On the other hand, it has been decided that
Joubert
is guilty. Joubert, if you wouldn't mind coming up the front here with me."

Vollkan directed Joubert to sit in a chair at the front of the courtroom. As Joubert approached Vollkan, he bowed his head, chuckling menacingly.

Joubert sat down, and burst into laughter.
Image
"You idiot," he scoffed at Vollkan, drawing a gun "If you dare move a muscle, I'll blow your brains out."
Vollkan smirked: "That's alright. The electric chair's set to activate now anyway."
Joubert's eyes widened, and his mouth shaped the word: "What?" The electricity cut his exclamation short, however, as it surged through his body:
Image

The police came to take statements from everybody at the courthouse, seeing as a gun was pulled on the court's beloved odd-job man. The police also took DNA samples from the body, determined to identify Vollkan's would-be assailant.

After a few hours, a policeman hurried into the courtoom, handing a scrap of paper to Vollkan. Vollkan: "Well, it looks like the jury system works after all. The police just ran a DNA check, and it turns out that....

Mirth didn't return home after the trial that day, instead returning to the Prosecutor's Office to continue with her work. As she worked tirelessly into the early hours of the morning, she didn't notice the figure slinking into her room. The figure struck fast, taking the life of out Mirth:
Image

Her body was covered in deep lacerations, and traces of poison were found in the wounds...

Meanwhile, just before the next morning Gorrad was busy preparing the courthouse when he heard a knock at the door. Thinking that a dutiful lawyer was seeking to use the court library he opened the door, only to find himself staring into the barrel of a revolver. He sobbed a little, but the figure behind the gun just laughed:
Image

A single shot rang out, and Gorrad fell...

I will not extend the deadline. My policy, as per rule 13, is only to do so "in very special circumstances".

I will allow CS to pass her voting power to Rishi, however. CS may reclaim this at any time by uttering words to that effect ("I reclaim my voting power") or by performing a voting action of her own (un/votes).

As the votes began to roll in, Populartajo took a swig of black coffee, savouring the bitterness. He didn’t struggle as he was led to the chair, and didn’t react to the angry stares of the other people in the courtroom. Populartajo was satisfied that he had done his best to bring the guilty to face justice, even if he wouldn't live to see the guilty parties face their punishment.

Image

As populartajo slumped in the chair, a flushed young woman rushed into the courtroom. Her eyes widened as she saw his body. "I work at the Prosecutor's office. I ran as fast as I could...to stop you...but...populartajo...oh dear."

The realisation dawned on the courtroom that they had just executed an innocent man; indeed, one who had spent his life trying to ensure that the guilty were caught.

ChiefSkye4 stood at the bar table in the courtroom, practicising for her next big case. As she practised shouting "Objection!", she didn't hear the door open, or the figure slink up nearby. She was startled by a hint of laugher,

Image

But that was it. In an instant, she was dead, found the next morning covered in deep, poisoned lacerations.

Meanwhile, Battle Mage sat in the Judge's Chambers, busily reading up on cases. He took a sip of tea and moaned a little before collapsing...dead. Arsenic.

Natirasha whimpered in fear as the votes rolled in. The others were not perturbed by Natirasha's display of fear, and remained steadfast in their suspicion.

Natirasha did not struggle as he was led to the chair. Sitting down quietly and despondently, he closed his eyes and awaited his fate.

Image

After the execution, the others stepped forwards, eager to find anything to confirm that they had made the right choice. Alas, Natirasha carried nothing other than a magatama and a driver license identifying him as Maya Fey, an innocent spirit medium.

As the remaining individuals in the court looked at each other, upset with themselves, a sinister giggle rang out...from the chair. Maya's body was writhing. A sinister apparition, the true Natirasha, emerged out of the air; it looked like a red-haired girl. Vollkan, panicking at the sight, summoned court security. A guard burst into the room and fired at the spectre, to no avail.

Maya's magatama began to glow intensely and his hand began to move. The spectre, Natirasha, looked down in fear. Channelling her own spirit back into her body, Maya threw the magatama at the spirit. It screamed and moaned in agony.

And then disappeared, a pile of dust falling onto the ground.

Maya's body went limp...dead. Nonetheless, the evil spectre of Natirasha had been destroyed.

After the court proceedings, Matt_S dashed back to the police station, retrieving his night-vision goggles and a forensic kit. He was determined that, this night, he would catch the criminal organisation in the act and gather proof of guilt.

He sat in the bushes outside of the house where he expected the criminals to strike next, his equipment ready and recording everything. He heard footsteps on the street and cranged his head out from the shrubbery, to gain a better look. He almost gasped when he saw that the footsteps belonged to a figure, pointing a pistol at the window of the house.

Trembling with nervousness, Matt_S reflexively, and stupidly, reached into his kit for a pack of Snackoos, his not-so-secret addiction.

Image

The loud crunching was highly audible in the silence of the evening. Engrossed in his meal of ambiguous snackfoods, Matt_S did not notice as the figure ran towards the bush. Matt_S didn't look up from the packet until it was too late. The figure fired two shots, killing Matt_S, and proceeded to smash the equipment.

In the morning, Matt_S and his destroyed equipment were found by a passing postman.

The remaining four gathered in the courthouse, ready for another trial to begin.

Matt_S. Ema Skye, Watcher.

Malthusis had spun a web of lies in his efforts to deceive the town and, by the fourth trial day, the network of deceit had broken down.

"Isn't the Godmother already dead?" asked Sensfan.

At that point, Malthusis realised it had all come undone for the criminals.

Image

Malthusis stood still, glowering in rage at the town, and at himself for his failure. With a flick of the switch, Malthusis' life, and the criminals' reign of terror, had ended.

 I meant to unlock after my previous post, but I forgot.

Anyway, this setup was as follows:
Town

1 x 2-shot vig
1 x Doctor
1 x Watcher

1 x Bailiff
1 x Defence Attorney
2 x Prosecutor
2 x Judge

Scum

1 x Godmother
1 x Judge corrupter
1 x Rogue Prosecutor

Fundamentally, the game was a regular mini normal. I had a town of 9 with 3 power roles (doc, watch, vig), and a scumteam of 3 with 1 power role (Godmother).

Rather than having vanillas, I designed the game so that there would be other power roles that could influence the day process. I had much help from Norinel in this regard, who reviewed the setup (
Many thanks, Norinel
).

The defence attorney role had the power to protect from prosecution, like a doctor.

The prosecutors were indeed responsible for choosing the defendant. Each sent in a preferntial list, including malthusis, the scum prosecutor (flavour rationale: Kristoph Gavin masqueraded as Klavier Gavin. Mal had this fakeclaim, but never used it). The defendant system was an obvious disadvantage to town, since it forced lynches. The point of the prosecutors was to allow town to mitigate this disadvantage, since good prosecutors would be able to use their scumdars to place scum on the defendant's seat. Malthusis was implanted in order to play against this, however, to give the scum some influence.

The idea of the defendant system came to me because, aside from flavour, I always hate playing in games where town is indecisive leading up to deadline. I also don't like "most number of votes is lynched at deadline", because I feel it encourages indecisiveness and lack of discussion. Thus, my hope was that the defendant system would basically force people to make a judgment. It was no longer "Is X scummy enough to lynch?" but, rather, "Is X scummier than Y?" I'd be very interested to know what people think of this system, and whether you think it made the difference that I hoped it would?

The judges, as you surmised, were responsible for juror selection. Each night they sent in a role PM with a preferential list of all players alive at that point. The defendant determination took prioirity over juror determination and, thus, the top people of the combined preferential list were selected as jurors. Ties were resolved by random.org (Chief Judge did NOT gain priority, contrary to what was guessed in thread). The jury selection was also influenced by the judge corrupter and bailiff. They also got to send in lists, but their lists had reduced value (I weighted their preferences by half) and could only include three people.

The juror system was basically town's compensation for the defendant system. Given the relative control town had over the juror selection, it allowed for a situation in which, if judges were clever and gave lowest preference to suspects, the scum could be disempowered.

Thanks again for playing, and I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts :D

I think it was fun for a change of pace, but I wouldn't want to play this format all the time. I think the power of one person to withhold a vote occasionally made the game frustrating.

What about a defendant system without a jury (as in, regular voting mechanics except that there is an auto-lynch at deadline)?
Rishi wrote: By the way, I'm curious how the jury would have been determined if both judges and the judge corrupter had been dead? Random?
It never came up in game, but it was obviously something I had to plan for (in relation to both the jurors and defendant).

I ended up settling on randomness, but there were other ideas I tossed up in the planning stage (eg. randomly picking a dead player to submit a list).
Rishi wrote: Anyway, good game town. It was really made a lot easier by the way that the scum messed up their fake claims.
Interestingly, every single scum member had a guaranteed safeclaim.

I could have mentioned this earlier, but:
Joubert had the safeclaim of Dick Gumshoe, cop.
Natirasha had Maya Fey, no role specified
Malthusis had Klavier Gavin, prosecutor.

Natirasha wrote: I agree, what did the bailiff do?
As I said before (it was hidden in a big paragraph on the previous page):
vollkan wrote: The jury selection was also influenced by the judge corrupter and bailiff. They also got to send in lists, but their lists had reduced value (I weighted their preferences by half) and could only include three people.
Basically, the bailiff was a mini-judge. It only sent in three names and its preferences had halved value (so, eg, on the first day a judge's first preference counted for '12' points, whilst the bailiff's only counted for '6'). Originally, I had two defence attorneys, but I decided that it would be better to give the town a slight boost in the juror selection.

Could you post role pms and night choices please (including lists.)
Role PMs
You are Phoenix Wright, greatest Defence Attorney of all time.

As a Defence Attorney, you have the power to protect people from Prosecution. Each night you may send me the name of a single player (excluding yourself). That player will be protected from being made the Defendant on the following day. (eg. If you target X on Night One, your power will prevent X from being the Defendant on Day Two).

You win when all non-town players are defeated.

Please confirm your name and role to me by PM

IMPORTANT
You may PM me a name now (in the pregame stage) to protect somebody from prosecution on Day 1. You have 72 hours from the time of receiving this PM to do so.
You are the Puisne Judge and, perhaps unsurprisingly, your role is to work as a Judge.

Sitting down all day in court might sound tedious, but cases in this city tend to get very interesting very quickly.

Each night, you must submit a preferential list of Jurors for the following day (with #1 as the person whom you most to be on the Jury). All living players must be included on this list, but you cannot place yourself at the top. If you do not submit a valid list, I will create one randomly.

You win when all threats to the town are eliminated.

Please confirm your name and role by PM.

IMPORTANT
Please submit a list to me in the pregame stage for Day 1's Jury. You have 72 hours to do this from the time time of receiving this PM.
You are Maggey Byrde. You’ve left the Police Department and have joined the courts as a Bailiff.

Since you have started working at the courts, you’ve learned how to pull the strings of those in charge. Consequently, you have the ability to influence the Juror selection process.

Each night, you may send me a preferential list of three players whom you would like to be on the jury. You may include yourself on this list, but you must be in the third-ranked spot.

Victory is yours when all scum are defeated.

Please confirm your name and role by PM.

IMPORTANT
You may submit a list to me in the pregame stage to influence the Day 1 Jury selection. You have 72 hours to do this from the time time of receiving this PM.
You are Damon Gant, and you are a criminal Judge Corrupter. You’ve narrowly escaped death row and have teamed up with malthusis and Natirasha to take revenge upon the town.

To ensure your safety, you have abducted and murdered the local buffoonish cop known as Dick Gumshoe. You’ve dyed your hair and changed your clothes and you are now the spitting image of that ex-imbecile.

By impersonating a cop, you have the power to influence the course of justice. Consequently, your role is Judge Corrupter and you have the power to influence the Juror selection process. Each night, you may send me a preferential list of three players whom you would like to be on the Rury. You may not include yourself on this list.

You win when your criminal group is the only faction remaining, or nothing can prevent the same.

You may talk with your criminal buddies throughout pregame but must stop once Day One begins.

Please confirm your name and role by PM.

IMPORTANT
You may submit a Jury list to me in the pregame stage in order to influence the Jury selection process for Day One. Please submit such a list to me within 72 hours of receiving this PM.
You are Ema Skye and, by virtue of your skills as a forensic investigator, you have the power of a Watcher.

Using your scientific expertise, you are able to investigate any environment and determine which person or persons visited it.

Each night, you may send me the name of a player (excluding yourself). You will find out the identity or identities of anybody who targets that player during that night.

You win when all threats to the town are defeated.

Please confirm your name and role by PM.
You are Kristoph Gavin, and you are a criminal Rogue Prosecutor.

Having escaped from prison, you have teamed up with Joubert and Natirasha to take revenge upon the town.

For your first act of revenge, you have kidnapped your brother, the prosecutor named Klavier Gavin and stolen his clothing, perfectly concealing your true identity. With this ingenious disguise, your role is Rogue Prosecutor and you have the power to pervert the course of justice.

Each night, you must submit a preferential list of Defendants for the following day (with #1 as the person whom you most want to prosecute). All players (including yourself) must be included on this list. If you do not submit a list, I will create one randomly.

You win when your criminal group is the only faction remaining, or nothing can prevent the same.

Please confirm your name and role to me by PM.

IMPORTANT
You must submit me a Defendants list in the pregame stage for Day One. You have 72 hours from receiving this PM to send that list.
You are Miles Edgeworth. You work as a Prosecutor in this city.

You are entrusted with the responsibility of determining the criminal liability of other citizens.

Each night, you must submit a preferential list of Defendants for the following day (with #1 as the person whom you most want to prosecute). All players (including yourself) must be included on this list. If you do not submit a list, I will create one randomly.

You win when all threats to the town are eliminated.

Please confirm your name and role to me by PM.

IMPORTANT
You must submit a Defendants list now, in the Pregame stage, for Day One. You have 72 hours from receiving this PM to submit such a list.
You are Dahlia Hawthorne, and you are a criminal Godmother.

Despite being dead, you have possessed the body of Maya Fey and have teamed up with Joubert and malthusis to take revenge upon the town.

You are immune to all night-kills and Cop investigations.

You win when your criminal group is the only faction remaining, or nothing can prevent the same.

Please confirm your name and role to me by PM.
You are Godot. Shrouded in mystery, you work as a Prosecutor, making it your duty to bring criminals to justice.

Each night, you must submit a preferential list of Defendants for the following day (with #1 as the person whom you most want to prosecute). All players (including yourself) must be included on this list. If you do not submit a list, I will create one randomly.

When all anti-town roles are eliminated, you win.

Please confirm your name and role to me by PM.

IMPORTANT
You must submit to me a Defendants list in the Pregame stage for the trial on Day One. You have 72 hours from receiving this PM to submit your list.
You are Franziska von Karma. Prosecuting is far too mundane for someone as dynamic as yourself and, consequently, you’ve decided to take justice into your own hands and have become a 2-Shot Vigilante, rather than letting it be decided by those foolish fools in the foolishly “reformed” courts.

You’ve modified your whip significantly, embedding it with poison and diamond shards – it can now inflict lethal force. Unfortunately, there's only enough poison and diamond shards to survive two uses. On any two nights, you may submit to me the name of a person whom you wish to kill.

You win when all threats to the town are defeated.

Please confirm your name and role to me by PM.
You are the Chief Judge and, perhaps unsurprisingly, your role is to work as a Judge.

It’s a fairly cushy lifestyle and you get your own gavel.

You are Trucy Wright and, by honing your talents as a magician, you have the power of a Doctor.

Using your multitude of tricks, specifically Mr. Hat, you have the power to frighten off anybody intending on committing homicide. Each night, you may send me the name of any player (except yourself) and you will protect that player from any and all night-kills.

You win with the town.

Please confirm your name and role to me by PM.
