Do you have any idea how hard this would be to do? We'd need to creative in an infinite amount of every aspect needed for every research, and you'd have to get them again. There's no feasible way to "Creative In" specific discoveries or anything like that.

I'd also like a few thinks to help start off mods but this is just my opinion: empty mystcraft notebook (collects your symbols from ages you create, is 9 pieces of paper, virtually useless without three other more-advanced items in the mod) Whatever starts you off in Thaumcraft, Scoop For Bees (extrabees/forestry) and idk any of the other mods well enough to know what to offer to start you off in them.

Take out the map because it's not entirely necessary with Rei's Minimap. Get rid of the Goggles of Revealing because they're an item that has to be researched in TC3. Possibly add in their place a writing table and like 5 sheets of paper so people can get right into researching and then making the goggles for themselves.

^ I would give my seal of approval to that Starter Kit with the above changes.

Also get rid of the compass for the same reason as the map.

Thaumcraft (i'm guessing because they always have an aura node) has new structures that occur rather frequently. Obsidian structures called "Obsidian Totems." They spawn zombie pigmen, which is nothing. They come with a chest. I found a portal gun in one. <3 thaumcraft.

Also, proposal: On the new FTB server, OPs do not give out any items as part of a contest/game/whatever or anything like that. I think it majorly devalued the gaming experience last go around - people got items that they didn't earn by playing through the game (myself included).

EDIT: Of course you could give out items as a contest/game/whatever if you actually made them yourself and wanted to do it out of the goodness of your heart - just no spawning in shit.

I'm don't have a problem with this. All I spawned in on the current world was a portal gun so Klaz could clear the portals that were bugging out, and that was only temporary.

And a community is difficult- I would have no idea how to do it without total resource integration like the crash tower... For old people on the ms server, how did you all found spawntown and get spawn town running?

and if anyone needed something, we'd toss it to each other/ a lot of things became group projects everyone would pitch in and help. like all the farms you see today were group projects (or my single-handedly remodeling group projects to make them better (or izak single-handidly remodeling my remodeling))

And pretty much just a "if i have it, someone asks, and I'm not using it, i'll toss it at em." type attitude. which is easier when you live right next door. Everyone once in awhile things would be bartered for like you and me do (except much cheaper in that time)

Also, 2 things:

1) is there any way to make it possible to zoom farther out on the dynamic map? I know it used to zoom to the entire explored world on launch and it doesn't do that anymore. I can't find anything further away than about 5000 blocks from spawn because I don't know which direction to search for it.

2) who built the small hut built out of iron blocks with random rails and stuff inside. I happened across it while exploring and was wondering who it belonged to, if anyone. Seems like a pretty big waste of resources just sitting there

1- The thing is that the world just got bigger A while ago 5000 blocks was enough to see the entire world. That said, while people like big numbers, there are a lot of perfectly unexplored areas within a 3000 block radius of spawn (We found an untouched village 3000 from spawn).

Well I know the world got bigger, and I'm not trying to go to a big number to build, I just want to be able to see where other people have built on the dynmap so if for example I decide to build a transit hub in my new city and build subways I know where to go and in which direction. I just remember the first time people started leaving the spawntown continent somebody hopped in a boat and went out in the ocean in a straight line for much more than 5000 blocks and on the dynmap you could see the entire explored area at minimum zoom all the way out to the end of the explored ocean area and spawn town continent/skytown/jungle temple area was about the size a quarter. Now at minimum zoom basically the entire spawntown/skytown/jungle temple continent area fills the entire screen and it is impossible to zoom out further to see more of the explored area at once. It is definitely not able to be zoomed out as far as it used to because you can't even see the ocean at minimum zoom without scrolling away from spawntown. And now, since there are many "paths" leading away from spawntown I don't know which one to follow to find vinelands or Honeyopolis (that is a place right?) for example, or even how long I would have to scroll to get there.

I don't know what resolution would have to do with it or why it would increase storage space requirements. All the information is already there stored I just can't zoom out to see it all/more of it on the screen at once

You're thinking xooming out on a specific image is how dynmap works, but it doesn't. that would eat gigabyte worth of bandwidth in seconds. what it does is it has a different picture size for each level of zoom. At max zoom, 1 MC Block=50 pixels lets say. so you're assuming, "Ok now just zoom out but load the same X amount of 50X50 pixel blocks", so you zoom out so you can see 10 blocks X 10 blocks. thats 500X500 pixels. 250,000 pixels get sent to your computer. lets pretend each pixel is 1 byte of memory being sent over the internet, that is sending lets pretend 1 megabyte of data per 250,000 pixels.

Zoom out 100 times, so now you can see 100 blocks by 100 blocks. each block is still the same picture so its still loading at 50 pixels apiece, even though you can only see it on your computer screen as 5 pixels, the computer still has 50 pixels worth of memory there. Now it's sending you 5000 X 5000 pixels, 25,000,000 pixels. 50 megabytes of data. and now you can see all of spawntown.

Now lets zoom out some more so you can see 10,000 by 10,000 minecraft blocks. so that means the picture it is sending you is 500,000X500,000 pixels big. To you, it looks like a grouping of 3X3 blocks for a total of nine blocks is only a single pixel, you're so zoomed out. but your computer is still reading 50 pixels per block! so thats 250,000,000,000 pixels big that picture is! divide that by 250,000, that is one MILLION megabytes! thats a TERABYTE worth of data your computer has to load! Lets assume you have what is a typical ~A-grade (speedtest.net) internet in the USA, 25 mbps. that means you can only receive 25 megabytes per a second. you need to load one MILLION megabytes. so it'll take 1,000,000/25 seconds to load the picture. 40,000 seconds. 667 minutes. 11 HOURS it will take just to load up that map. PLUS, some hosting companies meter your intenet usage (on the server side), i think our first terabyte worth of information is at a gigabyte a second then we get metered down to slower speeds.

OOPS you just hit refresh! Now you've used all our internet bandwidth! Our metered speeds are soooo slow we can't even stand playing minecraft anymore.


So what DYNMAP does, is since you can only see 9 blocks per a pixel at that level, it makes a NEW picture. where each 1 pixel only represents 9 blocks. so if you are looking at a 100,000X100,000 block area, and 9 blocks per pixel, you're loading ~1 billion pixels rather than that hefty 250 BILLION pixels you were loading before. Now you're only using 15 gigabytes worth of data, you can hit refresh 250 times before our internet is metered.

so for every level you zoom out, dynmap has to create a new image size for you to load, to save on internet speed usage. Currently, dynmap is being told "only create images for them to load to 10X zoom out", and it makes 100 images of each block at different sizes of pixels to blocks ratio, to save on bandwidth. We can make it easier to zoom out further, by upping the resolution we tell dynmap to let you load to. But that means more images. Images take a hefty amount of Hard Drive Storage Space to store. it took me TWELVE HOURS of simultaneously running TWELVE delete scripts, deleting SEVEN images per a second per each script to delete the dynmap maps of the modded server, if that puts it into persepctive.

See it isn't as customizable as all that afaik, all I can do is add a few more layers zoom-out (maybe, it might be better detail zoom-in) so idk. i'd really have to take a look at the dynmap configs some more, which while being not too long, is one of the most technical-language driven convoluted configs we have.

thats why it takes up so much HDD storage space though, is saving all of those pictures.

So I played a bit of FTB single player last week. It is pretty fun, there are a lot of little nooks that could use more love (brewing beer and coffee, that is cool!)

Have you looked at plant corss-breeding with IC2? I'm just diving in to that

Izaak, why do you need all that power?? It seems to me that the top level machines in IC2 are not all that useful, since you can make most everything with the lower levelled ones... I mean, I could power a diamond generator and a miner relatively well with a small tree farm and a simple generator.

Now imagine 50 of these miners and diamond generators set up side by side, to continually power them one generator isn't enough. Now imagine a solar panel that can output enough power to power all of these AND charge 10 batboxs to full in under a minute. Yeah, infinite power rocks.

The thing that gets me is that you need to be much more organized with those megapacks... My first day playing FTB I did a reasonably nice looking 1 floor home using some of the different minerals, and then I spend the next three days mucking around with macerators and batteries and miners and my poor house remained unfinished It seems very easy to forget exactly why you need all those resources anyway.

Me and blake are literally the kings of getting side tracker. we started out getting materials to make a geothermal generator and a pump in the nether and in the process we had to make a bunch of shit that had us running back and forth between each others' houses, which then maybe us get creepered so we dug a tunnel that went under a NPC town pathway so gravity affected the gravel above our heads, so we replaced the entire town's pathways with scaffolding, and then we lit the town to stop creepers blwoing up our scaffolding then went to make a mystcraft age to mine for resources in (OMG I JUST REALIZED MAKE A MYST AGE WITH LAVA POOLS AND AVOID THE NETHER FOR OUR INFINITE LAVA POOLS OF FUN!) before finishing our original goal of setting up a small IC2 workshop. all in all ~10 or so hours of sidetracking

Thaumcraft is surprisingly polished. It is one mod that really made me regret looking the wiki - finding out stuff using its internal system is very fun.

I agree, unfortunately i have no time nor patience for this mod as awesome as it seems.

Steve carts look cool too, but I have yet to dive into that mod.

Turtles look extremely awesome, but with a high possibility of lagging a server to death with bad scripts.

Mystcraft is a great idea. The "portal central" aspect of it seems to be extremely underlooked (make a small stable age, and fill it with linking books to the nether, different parts of the overworld, and BAM you don't need warps anymore). The fact that ages can spawn TC dungeons with loot is OP to me though.

Portalguns are super OP. Moving spawners around? really? I mean, I could understand this if you had to build your portal gun with the ender star recipe, but you can get one relatively easily from TC+Mystcraft.....

So once the update happens, whenever the heck that is, I'm looking to add some mods. MindCrack was kind of awesome but there was a lot of stuff I didn't need that slowed down my computer a bunch. I'm also going for more of a natural themed play, like MindCrack is much more mechanically centered and that wasn't really fun for me (plus there was niko-useless-lite up the wazoo)

So here's what I'm looking at:
Biomes o' Plenty (or EBXL? I like them both. BicBiomeCraft is kinda yucky, but I supppose it is also an option)
Mo' Creatures (potentially some others, like DungeonMobs, Primitive Mobs, or Elemental Creepers)
Metallurgy (and possibly XyCraft? I do like the Xychoridite, but they seem to be trying to go in a more mechanical direction. Plus it has pesky aluminuseless...)
Pam's Mods (HarvestCraft for sure, don't know what others, probably not many)

Twilight Forest is great and I would really like to explore that mod but I feel like it adds a lotta lotta stuff and that'll slow down my computer. Although if I'm not in the Twilight Forest it shouldn't matter?

EDIT: Timber probably for sure, Backpacks and Weather you can add to the maybe list.

this is why thaumcraft dev sucks so bad. he relies on his past reputation with thaumcraft to carry thaumcraft 3 and therefor makes it extremely hard to get any new users like you and me who are wary installing a mod with such little documentation.

Block IDs can be reassigned, usually through config files. But be careful what you turn the ID into, some mods use a LOT of them. Also reassign the ID for the new mod, not the old one. And keep it roughly in line with the range of the new mod.

Vanilla server question: At risk of re-opening a can of worms, I was just wondering if there was ever a verdict on whether there would be a world reset when the redstone update comes out or not? I think we had decided that since the only new resource is nether quartz and we hadn't explored that much of the nether that we were not planning a reset at this time because we can just explore new areas for nether quartz. Computers all set to go now and I'm anxious to get started on my maze, I just want to make sure I'm not going to lose any of my work in the next couple weeks or months or anytime soon (or at the very least, can have assurance that my Mazetown islands can be transplanted if a reset were to happen soon.)

Also, I was going to ask when the vanilla dynamic map would be back up but I rubbed a couple brain cells together and figured out how to find it. Looks like its zoomed out a little more so a big thank you to whoever made that happen <3. However, don't know if anyone noticed but now all the location markers aren't where they're supposed to be. Looks like it happened because of changing the zoom out/resolution/whatever. Like the map zoomed out but the markers stayed static and didn't follow the map zoom. Proportionally to the spawn marker and each other, they all look correct, just farther away from each other than they're supposed to be. Like the marker zoom level and the map zoom level are on 2 different scales that aren't quite synched. Kinda hard to explain other than they're not in the right spot now. Not trying to nag just an FYI.

I'm unhappy. I would like to listen to a explanation from Maru to why and what he wanted to accomplish.

I was seeing how abandonded the vanilla server was. it took nearly a week for anyone to notice the main town was anything wrong, and I knew without a doubt there would be no lasting damage, I had backed up the world, and tested the commands to rollback from in game. Corin had told me the MS server was basically deserted and I didn't believe him.

world wouldn't have been lost, there are commands in game to just roleback spawntown and nothing but spawntown, and I had tested commands previously, as well as tested to make sure they could roleback up to a month prior.

If this were to happen on a server I actively played (the FTB server), then I would quit - hands down. OPs griefing and considering it fine by way of their status on the server is not cool.

what I did was wrong.

I was doing it for my own info, and it hurt others and it shouldn't have happened.

Some measures have been taken (M now being the "owner" mask in-game and myself the default like everyone else, so essentially izak and M are now the owners of the server while I as a hosting company (Ms-hosting.org) merely sponsor the community by providing a server space.) and more can be taken if the owners/community deem them fair punishment

Banning is imho a fair punishment, I should still be permabanned from when I killed Chesskid without his permission, and was only unbanned because Claus felt that me saying we should both have stayed banned rather than just unbanning chesskid was foresight as to chesskid's griefing.

I should have been permabanned months ago, and it was rescinded (kindly) by our then-admin and owner, and I feel it would be fair punishment to have now.

This is the MS community server, you're just the most recent admin. We can easily transfer ownership to someone else if you can't handle it anymore.

I am no longer an admin on the vanilla server, and no longer have control panel access to it either. Corin runs his own backup system for us outside of our control to his own paid-for out of his pocket private dedicated servers (and has for months) I have already transferred ownership to M, and agree with you full heartedly, any further concerns? I did tell him he could have the space for free and he doesn't have to pay, but if dislikes that plan or he dislikes me being the company providing the space he has full access to all of the files he can move them to another company without my consent of knowledge, and I have nothing I can do about it.

The plugins are configured and there's an automatic backup system already in place, right?

p sure. look in the FTP /backups folder see if the most recent date/time stamps are of recent dates/times.


If not multicraft is set up to run auto backup commands if you configure it (in advanced i think under timed commands or something like that), and I have multicraft set up to keep up to 30, so if you set for daily backups that keeps a month.

yes all usability you get out of NEI in the modded server is available in the nilla server as well.

@chkflip as FTB installs a new minecraft directory it will not fuck with your current save games. all playing done on modded server is saved in a completely separate file, and uses a different launcher (the feed the beast launcher), so anything you do in MineCraft.exe stays separate from FeedTheBEast.exe

Corin (our super smart computer nerd) was having a talk with a person in #FTB trying to figure out a problem and they both p much told me we need to restrict our user-creation of mystcraft ages. I had said pretty much the same thing 10 minutes earlier on-server, and with these new temples to fins symbols this is definitely a new reality. if your linking book/descriptive book is not an age on the age list delete it, if for some reason you are using more than you can have on the age list, talk to me and we'll see why you have the "need" for so many and what to do, and from now on no willy-nilly creation of new worlds without asking an OP first. also @Ops, I'd greatly appreciate if someone could restart the server from the cp a least once a day, preferably if you log in and see nobody is online then would be a good time to. When you do so, hit the stop button, wait for the console to stop outputting stuff, wait 1-2 minutes to let everything just relax a sec, then clear the console and hit the start, and watch the console. if it gets stuck on Loading module for Thermal Expansion for more than 2-3 minutes, spam the stop button a shitton and restart the process.

Oh hey guys I forgot I wanted to talk about warps in the vanilla server.


What do you guys think about replacing /warp with /warp command blocks located at warp pads? (OP configured, of course).

As you guys know I've been against warps and TP-ing and all other such voodoo magic but I think this way warps would be balanced and fair, so that I actually like them. It would mean that players may only warp from a warp pad to a warp pad, rather than from anywhere in the world to any warp pad, which I think is the main reason I was against warps - because they're available at any time from anywhere. This change would make warps function more like portals. Another benefit would be that people wouldn't have to try to remember all the warp locations, and new people would be able to find them. I still only know for sure about spawntown and skyland and vineland. I think there are others but I have no idea what they are or where they go. Makes for an inaccessible server if its too hard to find other people and see their creations.

Easiest way would be to make spawntown the master hub, and build a warp pad with command blocks to every other warp. At every other warp, you'd just need a command block back to the spawn warp pad master hub. That way it takes 2 warps to get to most places, but requires the least amount of command blocks to be configured.

I have some other ideas, such as prerequisits based on warp distance in order to "earn" the warp at a location and to keep the server accessible for players who wish to not use warps, but I don't want to make it sound too complicated too quickly (even if it all makes perfect sense in my head ). Just curious if people like this idea?

We're talking about a little quirk with the Ages that I told izak about the other Day.

Basically there're several Ages which are LITERALLY persisting after deletion because there are Chunk Loaders in them. You can see a "world persisting, DIM XXX loaded, persisting" or something in the console about 5-10 times every time server loads up. I'm trying to get a hold of either a) server console startup logs or b) time to get on and watch a restart from console so I can grab the numbers in the split second they show up on the console. But from now on we need make sure deleted Ages are NOT Chunk Loaded with Quarries or anything else, or else whole chunks of the world will be loaded by server memory and will "persist" until we re-enter the deleted worlds and delete the Chunk Loaders.

you realize deleting the world deletes all items in the world, including but not limited to: quarries, engines, chunkloaders, tesseracts, and any personal belongings.

Users should then be given 48 hours to "claim" an age. If they already have two ages in the spreadsheet, they must choose one to be deleted so the new one can be added. This will prevent issues where people's ages are deleted randomly because they forget about the spreadsheet or something is overlooked

it also allows for people to run 3 or 4 ages at a time for a period of a week with a 48 hour warning before their extras are deleted.

No, iirc he's running the server on Linux, which means any delete is a pernadelete.

because there is no easy way for me to just back something up on a whim. backing up manually is something that would take close to an hour to do, as i would have to download a copy of the entire server's world folders. thats what the automated backup is for.


i sincerely apologize for trying to make people happy, as to the number of people (not just blake) that have asked for something that bukkit offers (commands, griefprotection, etc).

I fail to see the difference. You have repeatedly mentioned that bukkit causes issues, and you install it without having any safeguards in place.

the difference is installing bukkit takes mere minutes, backing up manually and not letting the automatic backup due it, the only means i know how to backup, would take hours. when attempting to do something you believe will work 100% without issues, has other servers running it flawlessly without issues, and that you assume will take less than a half hour of your day, you don't normally think first "oh hey i'm going to spend hours doing this other thing first just in case something i don't think will cause issues causes issues". you spend the twenty minutes doing it.

then when that twenty minutes ends up taking 3 hours to fix, yes, it sucks. and yes you wish you had the foresight to not do it at all in the first place.

Spoiler: Creating the impossible maze

This pic is the progress I've made towards killing a bunch of water that was 2-4 deep mostly:

I'm mining/building the frame based on the previous excel template I posted. I'm using stone in the pattern I need as well as dirt to kill the water, figuring it would save me some time. I'll just dig up all the dirt and leave the stone since the stone is where it needs to be anyways. Not sure its really saving me much. It takes slightly longer to place all the blocks in the right pattern, and its slightly harder to dig up the dirt around the stone.
Here's the template I'm building to:


If I actually had the maze planned out already I could save even more time placing the rest of the walls and saving some mining underground. But I haven't designed the maze yet so I'll have to go back through and place the rest of the walls later. I'm not sure how many layers I'm going to get to before I get tired of digging. Underground there is 1 complete layer matching the excel template, and a second layer that is about half done. I've been alternating my time between mining underground, placing stone and dirt to kill water, and digging the dirt back up. I started on saturday and spent quite a few hours over the weekend. And have spent a couple hours every night this week. In my mind I set an upper limit of 20 layers for the max size I'll go to, but assuming I keep up this same pace it might take me 2-3 months just to finish digging the frame out for 20 layers. The amount of digging I signed myself up for is roughly equivalent to digging a 3150 square block quarry (~56x56) roughly ~45 blocks deep or >141750 total blocks (2215 stacks). Thats not counting the extra digging and replacing wrong blocks with smooth stone. That leaves me mining ~40 stacks of blocks per day on average to get done digging in less than 2 months. Despite the scale I've just described, I'm still gonna go for it! I'm way behind the curve in resource collection so building the maze doubles as a pretty good resource mine (although so far I'm doing a pretty good job breaking even using just about as much iron, coal, and cobble as I've been collecting).

Oh yeah, once I'm done with this, that's only half way done... there's also the nether half . Not planning on creating a nether portal on Rhinoland Island until the redstone update / nether quartz is in though.

Somewhat related to the above, I've been experiencing a bit of lag still on the vanilla server. I know people don't like hearing it, but I'm pretty sure its server lag at this point, because its the same sorts of things I complained about here - namely now I'm getting blocks the flash in and out when I place or mine them, which is really slowing down my process. Only difference is since I mentioned anything about it last, I upgraded my system (I'm current getting around 300FPS average while playing with max settings and no optifine), and I trippled my own internet connection DL speed (6mbps DSL to 18mbps Uverse) while increasing my UL speed by 1.5x (~1.0mbps to 1.5mbps). Despite my own upgrades, the level of lag I've been experiencing over the past month didn't change at all.

I want to be clear I'm not complaining about it or demanding a server upgrade. Its a slight annoyance at this point, not debilitating or keeping me from playing. Just providing feedback for the server guys. Its also possible (or maybe probable) that its not lag at all (as in server RAM or connection), but just latency that no one can do anything about. At this point though I've convinced myself there's really nothing I could improve on my end.

my best guess at this point would be latency. next time you're on ping corin and he can tell you now to test your ping against the server and see what it is

no, he forgot to reformat the comptuer to run on a more optimized version of the operating system when we bought the new node, so he had to mvoe all of our 200 gigabytes of files to another server then wipe and re-instal the os and move it all back

I think in general more communication with server issues would be a good thing. I think I remember with daddycheese, claus would regular post things like "daddycheese says the server's going to be down from X to Y" and stuff like that.

I'm not saying we need advance notice before taking the server down or anything like that. But if for example corin has to take the servers down to format a drive, I'd be nice to have an official server host notification posted somewhere saying that. Even if its a real simple and quick: "Hey guys taking server down for maintenance, expecting it to take X hrs/days."

Its just nice to be in the loop with whats going on and not be in the dark wondering what's happening? does anyone know? is it being fixed??? I'd extend this to things like the dynmap too. I'm still not sure if its being worked on, whats the timetable for it to be working, what the issue really is keeping it from being fixed (is it technical or just low priority?), etc.

Maybe these announcements are being passed around on IRC or something but not everyone can be on IRC all the time. My work blocks all web and client based IM services including IRC, and even with my phone I still have a verizon 3g phone and apparently it is a thing with verizon that IRC doesn't work or is blocked over 3g, only works over wifi, which I don't have access to at work either.

Most of you found out before I did, due to my schedule there is often a 16-20 hour chunk of a day during which i will not once log in to this site, and that is unavoidable. Usually he tries to give me warning before doing stuff, and i try to pass on said warning. This particular time was un-avoidable as it was an emergency. We got a letter fro mthe datacenter where the machines are stored telling us that a configuraiton we had was basically over-using their network, essentially killing others' ability to use the network and only letting our traffic through. They told us we had 24 hours to fix the issue before they disconnected our machine from the network, until we could re-configure it to work properly.

For the past 24 hours, Corin has been spending countless hours trying to figure out a way to make it work to do what he needs it to do without fucking over the kind company providing us the building, power, and internet connection to the machine. As of ~5 minutes ago, he has told me he is finished, and has thrown up a temporary server of some sort while he moves all of our content back to the new machine. Unfortunately, due to how much I have completely backup-up-the-wazoo'd the mafiascum server while i was running it, and left the systems in place to continue this process, the mafiascum server itself takes up nearly 100 GIGABYTES of data space. Imagine trying to download a 100GB file onto your computer, how long that would take. Let me give you a hint because I did it with a doctor who torrent, it took me 19 days to download it.

Normally an entire minecraft server network of 20 or so servers all running their own stuff can run on under 50 gigs, the mafiascum server takes twice that.

That means unfortunately down time is longer than should be, due to the level of backups we have to stop things like chesskid and me from permanently affecting the server.

I've been talkign to corin trying to find ways we can move away from the system i had in place to a less-intensive system, while still keeping near-same levels of backup-ability. One such thing, need to configure LogBlock to allow tracking of signs, then I need to ask everyone to remove and replace any signs they care about after the fact, so they get logged properly.

Another thing, we'll probably stop updating the every 6 or 12 hours it is set now to (way excessive considering the level of server activity on the MS server, to deem 6 hours of work worth enough to take up gigabytes of data), to a standard normally-used 24 hour backup schedule. We MIGHT (im trying to find a way to compromise here while still saving space) stop saving an entire month's worth of backups and save only a week at a time (although if this was a result, I'd ask Claus if he would do his own manual backups he used to do like once a week or every other week, just to keep a decent level of backups in case any less-active members get griefed and come back a month or so later to find it un-fixable except through logblock)


Now, as for why I am deciding these measures to take myself rather than asking M, is because this is not just a sever-problem for the MS server, but a space problem for the overall limited storage space of the entire company's server space. Of course, if M would rather do all this himself rather than have corin fix it, he is more than welcome to.

The bukkit thing the only person online was dav and i todl him we'd be down for maybe an hour while i tried to do bukkit stuffs. from now on i can shoot you guys a pm though when i do anything to the ftb server. This current downtime, klaz and M and most the server knew before I did.

I was thinking while reading your posts... if its possible to get read-only FTP access I could do some semi-regular manual backups of the vanilla server. I could take a backup whenever I ended a minecraft playing session. I'd be happy to do it because I'd have the piece of mind knowing I'll never lose any work I did in between backups. You'd just have to let me know what files I need to copy.

if you can download FTP files with read-only, M can do that for you himself through his adminyness of the control panel. FTP-access is owner-set so you'd just have to register on the control panel, and have M set you to a user with read-only FTP. If it requires write-FTP access, i would suggest M against giving out freebie FTP-access with writableness, but again, he could do that as well.

EDIT: Corin says it is possible, you'll have to register on mutlicraft.ms-hosting.org and then ask M to give you read-only access in the FTP settings and user-level access in the Users page.

THE GOOD NEWS:

The Hosting-Company die of things is now fully 100% configured properly. OVH (the big guys with the warehouse full of machines) are happy with our settings, we are no longer taking cheap-shortcuts to make things work (end therefore not working properly), and we fully configured to be 1-click scaleable. we'll never have near this level of downtime again for upgrades should we ever need them (we shouldn't), and we are much much more stable than before. This means less downtime!

MORE GOOD NEWS:
In conjunction with all that, we can now VPS our multiple servers. This means no longer will the MS server affect the FTB server, or vice versa (the main issue in causing what rob mentioned above, getting to that). This also means better performance, and more stability and less problems like rhinox's lag.

SOME SEMI GOOD NEWS:
We can now have bukkit on the FTB server SAFELY! We will instal it before anything else so there is nothing for it to fuck up! This means things like /home, /tpaing, /warps, /fly for admins, lockable chests (no more looting!), as well as possible lockable barrels and IC2 machinery due to custom configs (MAYBE WE'LL LOOK AND SEE), and much more!

The nowhere near good news:
In relation to above, and rob's post, we have lost the FTB server. The total cause of this: I assume most of oyu know what .zip/.rar filetypes are, they are a compressed, shrunk down copy of a directory that saves as a single file, making transferring them easier. When doing things, like all the server maintenance we have done for the past month and a half, the easiest way to transfer all the files in the servers back and forth is to use a process like .zipping, using .tars. Unfortunately, apparently .tar can have some troubles moving large massive files (say, 100Gigs) and might corrupt them. This is what happened. While dealign wit hthe massive number of backups the MS MineBackup plugin has created, the files became corrupted ( we lost all MS backups older than february 14th, the Essentials folder (meaning your /home locations, /warps, and a few other non-issue items), and the entire FTB server). This means

We have to restart the entire FTB server from scratch unfortunately

. Some of you at this point may be at the point you think this is going to be a normal occurrence and an issue. I promise you it won't be. We now have the infrastructure in place to have the entire MACHINE backed up better, as well as keeping this type of stuff from happening again, as well as this amount of downtime. We should never see downtime due to me/corin again.

What this all means:
We need to decide what we're going to do at this point. First: what modpack we all want collectively (I suggest DW20 still).
Second: We're going to need to find a new seed we like, unless one of those who did the seedhunting originally have the seed from before that we can use.
Third: We need to decide what we're going to do as a server now. Start over from scratch, give everyone an hour with admin-monitored creative mode, give nice big chests full of supplies out, or what. We also need to hash out some more permanent-type things, such as how to handle mystcraft, what rules need to be put in place in-game wise on mods that cause any forms of lag, and what to do as admins to stop some of our past mistakes happening again.

@Claus, Rhinox, Maestro, IzakTheGoomba, MME: I would highly suggest you all register at http://multicraft.ms-hosting.org/ (as soon as it is back up again), and them N can give all of you FTP access to the server if he so chooses to allow Claus to run his scripted backups, and rhinox his as well.

PS: as for hosting, the price is something like 7.50 GBP per gigabyte, which equates to something like US$12 per gigabyte, we currently are running on 5, but the FTB server should really get 6 or 8 to itself. Just if you guys want to discuss that option, and that is about the same/cheaper than most companies available, and definitely cheaper than the big-name companies like multiplay.

I'm going to continue to run an FTB server though and as much as I hide behind the "this is maurhcan's server" bullcrap i spread, it really is more community-driven than any past server I have run excluding the MS server itself. I just say that as an end-of-discussion defense should i get sick of fighting with anyone about anything.

The thing is, and with all due respect to everyone, if I wanted to continue to start from scratch over and over again, I'd just play SSP. While it's true that I mainly play on the server for you guys, I do work hard for everything I get, as does everyone else. In between the time I spend on the server, and the sleep I get, I have school, which does get in the way of a lot of things, and, because of that, it can be frustrating to start over from scratch completely every couple of months. Now, I understand that shit happens and that computers aren't perfect, blah blah blah, but it shouldn't be a regular occurrence to have to completely restart the server. I'm not putting anyone at fault, nor am I complaining about things, because really and truly, I don't feel I have any say in what happens. The OP's we have are great, and I absolutely love being on the server, but something has to change. I want to stay here and play with everyone, but I just think there should be a better, more organized way to run the server.

Blake, I'm not upset by any means. It's just a game. I am, however, frustrated with the occurrence of the incident. I like to consider myself an active and devoted player, and having something taken away from you that you worked hard for can be very, very frustrating.

after this we shouldn't have any problems. the first big restart was because we chsoe to switch mod packs. now we're stickign wit hthis modpack that won't be an issue.

The second big issue was with mystcraft, now with bukkit people can keep their stuff safe without necessarily REQUIRING mystcraft, meaning it will be user's-choice to use mystcraft worlds as sole bases, rather than necessity to save yourself from grief/loot.

This most recent issue was 100% "computers tend to fuck shit up" and there is nothing user-end that caused this. It's not even 100% bad, because now we get to bukkit.

I have no intentions on leaving at all. I just think we need more order. And I'm not saying that the order we have is insignificant. I'm very thrilled that Maru is doing what he is doing, and Corin is also doing his best to keep the server running in perfect condition, which can be hard.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's not possible to please everyone all the time, but it is possible to come to the best consensus possible, which is what we need to do.

At this point, COrin's systems installation (that caused the most recent downtime, and the current crisis) of the VPSes are configured that everything we do across everything on the machine we run on is backed up at some interval corin knows fully and completely, in a very secure way. That alone means that nothing like this will likely ever happen again, as it is backup on a level so much higher than any of the fuckups we've previously had.

That backup alone means i can promise at any cause of hugefuckupery, we can completely rollback each "virtual" machine or the entire machine to any recent backup. That means eve nif i totally nuke the entire filesystem, we can still just re-instance the FTB server back to say 3 days ago (from now on not literally right now to three days ago), and we lose those days but nothing is long-term affected. This is more secure backup than anything any of the servers on this thread have had in the past, except for MAYBE claus's personal script backups he used to do. ask him (he knowx computery stuff) to talk to corin and verify how soundproof these backups are.

On the next level down, we are running multicraft backups meaning we have just as much level of security from now on as the MS server has (and was how i fixed the mess after bukkit install attempt) bar any computer asshatery corrupting these files, in which case we fall back to the above.

On the next level down, with bukkit, we can LogBlock, meaning we can rollback in-game minor instances of issues liek someone's nuke blew up, someone griefed, etc.

On the next level down, I agree with everything most of you said, and me M and izak need to get together and hash out how we handle things, and how i handle things in particular, and figure shit out before we do anything like touching files any more. (even to delete mistcraft ages)


This should be the last big major catastrophe short of FTB no longer supporting our modpack we should ever see.
