Mini 1141 - Frogs Mafia 2 - GAME, SET, MATCH

The forest shivers in anticipation of the coming spring. Though much has been wrecked by the miners of the nearby human settlement, still vast spaces are covered in forest. Under the dappled sunlight, the first stalks of the early blooming plants are beginning to show, pushing through the soil. Overhead, the first few birds can be heard returning from the warmer sumer climates. Below ground, the creatures of the forest are arising from their slumber. Life is beginning to stir.

But, that's not all. The winds bring something more than the warmth of spring, something imperceptible and unconceivable - and yet still there. That scratches at your scalp and sends shivers down your spine. That eats away at your nerves and breaks your will before you even notice. Something evil.

The Great God Frog looks from above and sees all. He sees the worry, the fear, but cannot see the source. Still he gives his blessing to the quest of the animals below - a quest that he does not understand, but which his subjects the frogs have undertaken.

Spoiler: The Rules

1) I reserve the right to edit the rules at any time and apply them retroactively, in response to situations I may not have envisaged.

2) The game will start in day. Until all confirmations are received (which should be done by PM), any groups who can nighttalk may talk.

3) Do not quote Role PMs or any other PMs I send you unless I specifically state it is ok to do so. If a role PM is quoted, an instant modkill and a ban from any games I run in future will be installed. You also risk being banned from the website as a whole: see the general rules.

4) Votes should be in Bold Type and in the format Vote: XXX. This isn't a hard and fast rule, but it makes things easier for me and I can't guarantee your vote will be counted if posted otherwise. If it's not counted, well you'll just have to live with it.

5) When a majority of votes are reached, the player will be lynched. You may post in twilight, however if you are dead you may not post any more information relevant to the game. Feel free to post a "bah" post though.

6) Please send any nightchoices you send as quickly as possible. Long night phases are no fun for anyone.

7) Do not edit any posts you make.

8) No coded massclaims.

9) Please let me know in advance if you are going to be away. If you are inactive without warning for 48 hours, I will send a prod. If that prod is not picked up in a further 48 hours, I will search for a replacement. If you manage to contact me before I find a replacement, you can continue with your place in the game, but after I've found one it's too late.

10) I don't have a stupid colour, or anything fancy like that, but I will ocasionally edit people's posts: if I've done this, I will make it clear that I have done this. Impersonating me or any of my backup mods will result in an immediate modkill.

11) If any player claims to be scum outing their partners, the following steps will be applied: a)The offending post will be deleted. B)The player in question will be modkilled. C)The thread will be locked. D)The scum will be PMed: I will ask them if they wish to continue the game. If the answer is no, the game will be abandoned (though I reserve the right to overrule the scum if I feel they are abusing this. Any attempt to abuse this, btw, I will take very seriously.) If the scum wish to continue the game, I will unlock the thread and we will continue. THESE PROCEDURES WILL BE TAKEN WHETHER OR NOT THE PLAYER IS TELLING THE TRUTH.

12) Modkills will end the day if it hurts the faction who is modkilled more.

13) DEADLINES ARE AUTOMATICALLY IN PLACE: Day 1 will end 5 weeks exactly after I declare the game has started. Day 2 will end 4 weeks after Night 1. All subsequent days will last 3 weeks.

14) At deadline, a majority of a majority is sufficient to lynch. For example, with 12 players, 7 would lynch normally and 4 will lynch at deadline -> the player with the most votes over four is lynched. However, if there are two players on the same number of votes, the player who reached the tie level first will be lynched.

15) Night will also be deadlined: at most 48 hours will be given to submit actions. Missing night actions simply will not happen.

16) Just because I may have forgotten rules doesn't mean you can break them.

The frogs begin their quest to discover the insidious evil lurking within in typical fashion - with much ribbiting, hopping, and general laying about in ponds. Eventually they get down to business - questions are asked and accusations are aired but bloodthirsty murderous lynch refuse steadfastly to form. For a while events continue in this steadfastly boring fashion.

All of a sudden, however, the peace of the forest and the equanimity of life and just generally everyone's day is disrupted by a strange noise. The noise is coming from mozamis, who, it appears, is for some reason gurgling and choking. Closer inspection reveals he has turned bright pink - further inspection reveals that he is frothing at the mouth. As the animals debate what to do about this strange occurrence, the need for action is removed from them - mozamis falls over on to his back, completely and 100% dead.

Apparently no one noticed before, but it turns out mozamis wasn't a frog at all. Oh no. Mozamis was something much... slyer? Legless. Scaly.

A snake.

More precisely, an adder.

The great God Frog speaks to his subjects, hears their confusion. To lay it to rest, he speaks thusly:

Slowly, the sun winds its way across the sky. The night is setting on fast, and still the frogs of the forest have not come to a conclusion about who to kill. There is muttering and ribbiting and general despondency, but despite the naturally violent nature of the frogs shining through in their murderous desire to deal with the issue at the source, their still appears to be little chance of reaching a conclusion.

Eventually the noise dies down. It seems as if nothing will happen today after all. The inconclusiveness of proceedings means that the frogs cannot come to a democratic conclusion, and without a democratic mandate then frogs (or at least, these frogs, with their history of social and political philosophy and government based on a complicated system rife with checks and balances) seem largely unwilling to strike out solo. Gradually the despondent amphibians skulk off, one by one, to their homes amongst the trees and the pools.

And so night falls with no deaths beyond the unfortunate and mysterious one earlier in the day.

Uneasy dreams haunt the minds of the forest denizens that night. Dreams filled with shadows and pain and whispers. Whispers in their heads, whispers growing louder and louder and louder...

BLOOD

Bodies file from the forest, not quite awake, not quite asleep, seemingly not quite real. The inhabitants are absent, their eyes hollow shells, covered in strange purple mist that obscures the natural colours. They walk as if sleepwalking, but with a strange, shuddering grace, animated like puppets by one skilled in the art of puppetry. From their mouths come strange obscene croaks and sighs as they shuffle elegantly onwards. In one place they converge. Round one frog they converge. Denizen of another world, he was not long for this one.



The Great God Frog looks down from on high at the bemused figures of the murderers, now free from whatever possessed them, staring in shock at what they had wrought. He takes pity on them, and knowing only one way of helping deigns to give them guidance.

The frogs slowly drifted away from the scene of the crime, eyes lowered, shuffling uncertainty marking their movements. Nature may be red in tooth and claw, but the savagery of the murder was unusual for forest and frog culture. Frogs do not, as a rule, rip apart their kin and leave their bodies lying on the floor. This was something else, something deeply sinister, and none of the participants could explain it.

It took another death to cause the frogs to reconvene. Adders and frogs may not always get along, but this infection had broken the natural predator/prey relationship. At this stage, it was about rooting out the menace. Nothing else mattered any more.

That's a lynch, folks!

Days in the swamp are frequently seen, by unknowing observers, as lazy, ribbiting, empty days. The people outside do not appreciate the effort that goes into a frog's daily routine: the intense concentration as little insects are painstakingly hunted and eaten, the attention to detail as the timbre of each ribbit is carefully calculated for the precise "forest background" effect required. Frogs are used to hard work. It is in their blood.

It came as something of a relief, then, that the culprit today was so obvious. A unicorn, an outsider. He appeared, it seemed, always at the least opportune times and stood always on the sidelines, outside, looking in, staring. His eyes were black like the night, seeming to suck the light from the air, and when he looked at you you could feel yourself being drawn in. His pelt was a ghostly, spectral white and his hooves made no sound as he walked across the forest floor.

In retrospect, it seemed odd to the denizens of the forest that they hadn't realised that something might be amiss with such a creature before. With his death, the atmosphere in the forest changed. The oppressive silence seemed to lift, just a degree or two, and the vague feeling of unease that had crept into the hearts and minds of each creature and lodged itself there like an unscratchable itch finally started to fade.



Looking down from the heavens, the Great God Frog smiled for the first time in weeks.

As to the intent of the setup, the purpose, as with frogs mafia 1, was to break the meta, the traditional "oh x means y" which leads to people making assumptions and hence breaking setups. I'm not a fan of player vs mod - I'd much rather have player vs player. Also sprinkled in a number of roles of which I am simply a huge fan and believe are underused - dayvig, tracker, joat are all examples of roles I really like for various reasons I won't get into here. I don't think the setup was as elegant and well-designed as frogs mafia 1, but I think it was probably better balanced over all. I have a bad habit of balancing games in favour of scum - here I think I may have overcompensated, though. The setup was light on townies because of all the weak power roles, which was an aspect I didn't like much - and indeed, I made a last minute change removing a weak power role for a townie.

The replacements were a bother. I dunno what it is - all the games I mod seem to have endless streams of site flakers.

I'm sorry for delays and lateness with the vote counts. Originally the plan was for one every 24/48 hours, but then the exam period hit (which also involved a fair bit of travel).

The best thing about the role was its open-endedness. I think if you gave it to four different people, they'd probably play it in four different ways.

As for a third, I'm not sure yet. I think the concept is played out, and I no longer have the driving urge I did when I ran the first one to skewer the common stupid setup one of ONE INFO ROLE ONE PROTECTIVE ROLE ONE KILLING ROLE - that meta is dying or dead. I have some other ideas but they need some real work on the setup and maybe some more flavour written in advance and all the shiney knobs and bells and whistles worked out so I can focus exclusively on the game itself - this game was too rushed in its preparation and that impacted the mechanical aspects of the modding.

I didnt make quicktopics. I mean, I don't honestly mind how people communicate at night if they have the option to. I've known scumgroups who speak exclusively over chat programs.

There was also no dead quicktopic - that was an oversight, I like dead quicktopics and it would have been good to provide a forum for dead people to discuss the game.
