Rules
  • 1.
This is a game. Have fun. Don't let things get personal.
    2.
During Day, you may vote for the player you want to lynch. Votes should be in the form
    Vote: Player
or they may not be counted. It is helpful to "
    Unvote
" when switching your vote to a different player, though
    this is not required
    .
    3.
Whenever a player has a majority in votes, that player will be lynched, his or her role will be revealed, and Night will begin. Once a player has reached a majority, Twilight will begin. No votes or unvotes will be registered, although talking may continue until the thread is locked. You may also
    Vote: No Lynch
; a majority will end Day without a death.
    4.
If discussion lags or Day goes on for too long, a deadline may be set. If no one has reached a majority at the deadline, the person with the most votes will be lynched given that half the remaining players are voting, otherwise it will be a no-lynch.
    5.
If there is a tie then the person who had been given
    their most recent vote first
    would be lynched.
    6.
During Night, players with role abilities may send targets for those abilities. Choices are due by the posted deadline, but day may start earlier if the choices are sent in early.
    7.
Don't edit/delete posts. Use the "Preview" button to look over your post before you submit it.
    8.
Feel free to quote role PMs from the Moderator
, however you may not quote any other PMs from the moderator or the time at which
    any
PMs were received or any links in any PMs.
    9.
People in groups (i.e. mafia, werewolves, masons etc.) are allowed to communicate by PM/QuickTopic
    at all times
(i.e. not just during the night phase). Otherwise, do not talk to anyone about this game outside the thread.
    10.
When you are killed you may make one final post (as long as it is simply an "oh well" type post that doesn't reveal any game information), but then you are dead. Do not talk until the game is over; this includes talking to living players outside the thread.
    11.
I will send out prods at my discretion/on request. Players may be replaced if a prod is not responded to.
    12.
If you have any question, complaint, or comment, PM the Moderator.

"Welcome to Shipwreck Island"

As the rain fell around them the group of guests looked at the sodden grounds, the windswept hills, and glanced amongst themselves with unimpressed expressions upon their faces. Isaac Morris continued.
"It is unfortunate that it is not a nicer day that you could be introduced to the place where you will be spending the next few days, however I assure you the house is a much nicer prospect than the surrounding environment, especially in these conditions. Please follow me."

The rain-drenched party trudged up the hill behind the small Jewish man who had met them on the boat. A few among them began to talk.
"This U. N. Owen chap certainly has a strange idea of what a relaxing and comfortable few days are" one said.
"Yes, I must agree when I got the invite I certainly had something else in mind when I heard we'd be staying on an Island" another replied.
"You know I can't remember for the life of me where I've met the Owens before."

There was a pause.

"That's funny. I can't recall them either."

No one else talked the rest of the way to the house.

---

After drying themselves off the guests settled in to the various comfortable looking chairs and lounges assorted around the living room. A few remained standing beside the fire.
"I see you are relieved to be in from the cold. Luckily there are a few servants that tend to this place and keep the fire going. Now our hosts haven't arrived yet but I am assured they will soon. In the meantime you will have to excuse me. My gastrial juices are playing up I'm afraid."

The guests milled about for a few minutes before one piped up.
"Well I frankly don't really care if Mr. and Mrs. Owen haven't arrived yet, I'm famished."
"Yes, quite. I say we get the servants to get the meal started" another agreed.
"Mr. Morris, can you call for the servants."

"Mr. Morris?"

A guest went into the room that Isacc Morris had retreated to and cried out as soon as they were through the door.

"He's dead!"

The other guests rushed into the room. One bent down to check his pulse.
"He's dead alright" he said.
"But how?"
"It looks like he was poisoned? If anyone else has gastrial problems I suggest you don't take his pills."
"But who would do this?"
One of the other guests stepped forward.
"I've been thinking about the identity of our mysterious guests. And I've come to the conclusion they don't exist."
The others looked at him with apprehension. "What?"
"No one can remember actually meeting them can they?'
They shook their heads.
"And think about their names. U. N. Owen. Unknown."
"My God, you're right!"
"I fear we might have been lead into some sort of trap. And I fear our killer may be among us."

The guests looked at each other with wary and distrustful eyes. Any one of them could have been the killer.
Accusations started to fly.

"You," said one of the men. "You got up and left the room shortly before he died. What did you get up to?"
"I had to take some pills myself as a matter of fact," the accused woman replied. "I am an old woman, you know."
Others murmured in agreement. "Yes, the very thought of someone so old and distinguished, and a woman no less, committing such a barbaric crime is unthinkable," one said.

But the first man didn't let up.
"Where are you pills now, then. Let's see them."
"Well I have them right here in my bag." She rummaged around in her hand bag and then looked up with a confused expression on her face. "I can't seem to find them. I must have misplaced them."

It was the last thing she said.

The very next second the man, her accuser, had whacked her over the head with a solid iron table lamp. Her old frame withered under the impact and she crumpled to the ground stone dead.

The rest of the guests looked on with shock.
"She obviously was the killer. Didn't you see how she lied?" The accuser implored. "She never went off to take pills, she went off to poison Isaac!"

"You fool."

The guests turned to see a man standing in the doorway of the bathroom. In his hand was a bottle of pills.
"She wasn't lying. She really did misplace her pills."

The accuser dropped the iron lamp and slumped to the floor in dismay.

All unauthorised posts during night have been deleted.

In other news:

Day breaks over Shipwreck Island and the already rattled guests find that the mystery they find themselves in goes deeper than they thought.

They also find another dead person, killed in their room during the night.

Sir Thomas Legge (ZazieR)
,
Gun License Investigator
, lies in a pool of his own blood on the bed.

The guests don't say a word, but look to each other with wary and searching eyes...

The guests were huddled in the lounge room in silence, before one of them piped up.

"Let's think about this logically, shall we."
The others looked at him, not fully comprehending.
"The first victim was poisoned correct, so that must mean the killer had access to poisons. Now who among us might that be?"

The guests looked around at each other warily.

"Perhaps...a doctor?"

One man stood up in shock.
"That's preposterous, I would never-"

Before he had finished his sentence he arched his back in pain and keeled over. One of the guests stood behind him with a knife.

"He's still alive!" She yelled.
The rest of the group ran over and stomped him until he stopped moving entirely.

"Here's his bag," another shouted, holding a briefcase aloft.
They rummaged through the pack expecting to find some toxic fluids, but found...

Nothing.

They looked at each other in horror and shame.

The guests wake up with a cold feeling in their chest. They walk somberly to the living room and mill about in silence. They know another of their numbers will have been killed.

But wait...

They're all here.

They know that this should bring them joy but instead they feel even more paranoid. They look at each other with fear in their eyes.

Someone stepped forward from the shadows.

"I know who the killer is", he said.

The guests all looked at him in silence, expectantly.

"I took him on my boat last night, which explains the lack of a kill, doesn't it?"

The guests nodded. "Who is it?" They asked.

"Him." The man pointed to one of the guests sitting in the middle of the room.

"Me?" The guest said in shock. "This is madness!"
But the others decended on him...

After checking his belongings and finding nothing but an old army uniform and some badges of honour doubt crept in to their mind.

"Perhaps", stammered the man, once so sure of himself. "Perhaps I was wrong."

The guests wake up to another stormy morning with dread, and rightfully so. Their numbers are dwindling after all.

And in the night their numbers dwindled even further.

Mr. Thomas Rogers (zwetschenwasser)
,
Lover
, and his wife
Mrs. Ethel Rogers (Looker)
,
Lover
, are both found dead in their room, arms locked in embrace.

"What do we do now?" shouts one of the guests.

"I have a solution."

"What?"

"Die!"

Suddenly the remaining guests are attacked.
Anthony James Marsten (hewitt)
,
Bastard
, goes down holding his throat. Blood bubbles from between his fingers.

William Henry Blore (hohum)
,
Room Watcher
, keels over and falls to the ground holding his stomach, a red stain expanding on his shirt.

Fred Narracot (Sarag)
,
Boatkeeper
, tries to make it to his boat but is hacked down before he can get to the door and stabbed repeatedly in the back.

There is silence in the house on Shipwreck Island.

And then there is laughter.

"I've done it," Cries the voice. "I've done it! And it all went perfectly according to my plan!"

The cackling grows louder and louder still, drowning out the rain and the thunder.

Justice Lawrence Hargreave (DizzyIzzyB13)
,
The Killer
, stands in triumph. And flanking him are
Mr. U. N. Owen (Nikanor)
,
Tracker/Watcher
, and
Mrs. U. N. Owen (AA23)
,
Night Talker
.

I think all the replacements really robbed this game of any flow, which is sad.

MVP goes to DizzyIzzyB13 for not only leading her team to a flawless victory but also staying with the game all the way through. Thanks Diz.

Roles:

Sajin

Welcome to Shipwreck Island.
After receiving the nice invite from that Mr. U. N. Owen chap (who you can't seem to remember just now, but must know him from somewhere) you couldn't resist the opportunity to spend a few relaxing days at a well furnished home on a secluded island.
However you hold a dark secret in your heart, a secret that will be revealed to all soon enough...

For you are Dr. Edward George Armstrong, a Harley Street surgeon, who caused the death of a patient while operating under the influence of alcohol.

Having not kicked the habit you are now known as an Alcoholic Doctor. At night you may choose one person who you will attempt to protect but, due to being drunk, might slip up in the process and kill them. (You have a 75% chance to protect and a 25% chance to kill)

Notes: I normally don't like percentage chance roles, but I saw this in another game and fell in love with it. The 25% chance to kill rather than the usual 50% for clumsy doctor type roles makes in far more attractive as a protective role, I believe, and the fact that it could potentially be used as a weak vig role in a last ditch type situation makes appeals to me as well. This was only used once and it didn't kill anyone

However you hold a dark secret in your heart, a secret that will be revealed to all soon enough...

For you are Emily Caroline Brent, an elderly woman of unyielding principles who uses the Christian Bible to justify your inability to show compassion or understanding for others. You dismissed your pregnant maid, Beatrice Taylor, who later threw herself into a river and drowned.

However now all you do is sit in chairs being a frail old woman. As such you are a Guest and have no special abilities.

Notes: I thought the flavor was self explanatory for the most part, but then again I had read the book and would think that. I figured when I showed that Isacc Morris was guest aligned people would realise that was this games version of "town" but the fact that everyone's roles revealed that they had murdered someone at one point lead many to believe that their characters were scum. In subsequent role pms I made sure to tell people that they were guest aligned or not.

You are investigating Shipwreck Island.
After receiving a tip that there might be something fishy going on you decided to come investigate this stormy Isle.

You are Sir Thomas Legge, a detective from Scotland Yard.

You have a hunch that the killer, or killers, will have a gun so you brought everybody's records with you and each night may check to see if someone owns a gun license. As such you are the Gun License Investigator.

Notes: This was probably the most useful town role (although it is a toss up with the boatkeeper). It would have gotten positive results on William Henry Blore (town), Justice Lawrence Hargeave (scum), Mr. U. N. Owen (scum) and Mrs. U. N. Owen (scum). While Hargreave and Mr. Owen had fake claims which explained the presence of their guns the fact remains that it still was like a 75% correct cop, and all negative results would have been town. Unfortunately it was killed off night one by the scum

For you are General John Gordon Macarthur, a retired World War I hero, who sent your wife's lover, Arthur Richmond, to his death.

However you are now a doddering old man who likes to have a nap. As such you are a Guest and have no special abilities.

Notes: At one point the General would have given positive to owning a gun license, but I decided against it. Also, on the subject of role pms, a few people complained that they didn't get a win condition. I realize I probably should have put one in to each of the roles, but I also agree with the school of thought that unless you have a special role you don't really need to be reminded of what your win condition is.

For you are William Henry Blore, a retired police inspector and now private investigator. You caused an innocent man, James Landor, to be sentenced to lifetime imprisonment as a scapegoat after being bribed. He later committed suicide.

You still have your investigative wits about you though and have taken it upon yourself to watch the other rooms. You are the Room Watcher, every night you can target a person and see if they left their room.

Notes: This had the potential to be somewhat useful, but wasn't really. I probably should have made it a tracker instead to give it a little more power. As it was there were 3 town roles that had night actions and only 1 scum role, however there was also the scum nightkill, so there were potentially 2 scum roles with night actions.

For you are Anthony James Marston, a man with a well-proportioned body, crisp hair, tanned face and blue eyes. You were born to a wealthy family and you ran over and killed two youths, feeling no remorse for the incident as you lack any kind of moral responsibility.

Due to being such a bastard you come across as inherently evil. As such you are the Bastard and will turn up guilty in alignment investigations.

Notes: As hinted by the name this was a "bastard" role. There was no cop so this acted exactly like a vanilla town (or guest in this case), and would have been viewed suspiciously if people found out there was no cop. It was yet another of my defenses against the mass claim I didn't want (and successfully prevented!) which I believe would have hurt town more than helped it. In the end I probably focussed a little too much on helping the scum though...

Sarag

You don't trust this business at Shipwreck Island.
There was something about the instructions given to you by that Mr. U. N. Owen fellow that didn't feel right.

You are Fred Narracott, the boatman who delivered the guests to the island, and you have decided to stick around and try to help them.

You are the Boatkeeper. Every night you may choose someone who will spend the night on your boat instead of in their rooms. This means they will be protected and will also not be able to perform any night actions. However if the killer comes for that person and finds that they are not there they will know you were involved and will kill you instead

Notes: This was another role that was potentially quite powerful for the town but unfortunately didn't have enough time to really get used in any interesting ways. I liked how it could protect or block someone, giving it versatility, and I also liked how if it protected an outed power role it would probably only be able to protect it for one night as it would end up martyring itself if that role was targeted. This, however, made it weak in lylo, and as people pointed out the role didn't make all that much flavor sense as the killer could be taken on the boat but would not kill the boatkeeper! I'll add that on night 1 Serplat refused to use the role for slightly bizarre reasons, saying that without more information it could be dangerous for him to use it.

Life is dreary on Shipwreck Island.
Ever since you were hired by that Mrs. U. N. Owen lady to tend to the house there has been nothing to do but make meals, tidy the rooms and and stay warm.
However all that is about to change as a dark secret which you have been harbouring in your heart will be brought to light...

For you are Mrs. Ethel Rogers, the cook and Mr. Thomas Rogers' wife.
You are a pale-faced, ghostlike woman with shifty light eyes, who is scared easily. Despite your respectability and efficiency, you helped your domineering husband, Thomas, kill an elderly employer by withholding her medicine, so you could inherit her money.

You are a Lover with your husband Mr. Thomas Rogers (zwetschenwasser). Due to sharing a room with him you may speak at night, but if the killer strikes you will both die. You may also duck off to your room for a quick conversation during day.

Notes: I decided in the end not to confirm the lovers to each other, but I realize I probably should have. They were weak enough with the whole "when one dies so does the other" stuff and the non confirmation just lead to a small amount of needless suspicion. It is funny that the trend with lovers and masons these days is that when they are not confirmed one is pretty much definitely going to be a traitor! I wanted to buck this trend a bit, which I suppose is another reason I didn't confirm them.

Life is dreary on Shipwreck Island.
Ever since you were hired by that Mr. U. N. Owen chap to tend to the house there has been nothing to do but stack wood, do the laundry and stay warm.
However all that is about to change as a dark secret which you have been harbouring in your heart will be brought to light...

For you are Mr. Thomas Rogers, the butler and Mrs. Ethel Rogers' husband. One of the first people to come to the island, you are a very hard worker even in your old age. You killed an elderly employer with the help of your wife by withholding restorative drugs from her, in order to inherit her money.

You are a Lover with your wife Mrs. Ethel Rogers (Looker). Due to sharing a room with her you may speak at night, but if the killer strikes you will both die. You may also duck off to your room for a quick conversation during day.

Here is your room

Notes: Funnily enough one of the lovers was going to be a traitor but I decided against it. I decided it might have actually worked against town if the lovers were viewed as confirmed, but this may have been wrong, and in any case the mafia were able to win a whole lot easier in the end as it was. Perhaps I should have just avoided the whole lover stuff and just made them masons!

Your plan is working perfectly.
You invited everyone to this solemn retreat under your pseudonyms Mr. U. N. Owen and Mrs. U. N. Owen and they came without question. Now you will kill them for the crimes they have committed in their past, crimes which no regular court could convict them for.

For you are Justice Lawrence Wargrave, a retired judge, well known for handing out the death penalty. You were accused of murder due to the judicial hanging of the criminal Edward Seton, even though there were some doubts about his guilt at the time of the trial. However this is because you had grown weary of the often ineffectual "justice system" and decided to take matters into your own hands.

As such you are The Killer and can work with your two pseudonyms, Mr. U. N. Owen (Nikanor) and Mrs. U. N. Owen (AA23), to kill off the guests at night one by one. You also can decide to forgo a kill at night and then kill someone the next day instead, but you can only do this once.

You may also consult with your pseudonyms at any time here.

For you are Philip Lombard, a soldier of fortune. Literally down to your last square meal, you came to the island with a loaded revolver. Though you are reputed to be a good man in a tight spot, you caused the deaths of a native African tribe.

You brought your gun but you forgot to bring bullets, however luckily you have one in the chamber. Due to only having one, though, you don't want to shoot at night and potentially miss so you have decided to use the gun in the daytime only. As such you are a One Shot Day Vig.

Notes: The day vig ability looked somewhat weak but was subtle and potentially powerful; after all at the very least it was like a night kill that avoided being blocked or watched. In the end when it was used it turned out to be even more useful than the mafia could have expected, with the town mislynching due to the belief that the boatkeeper had successfully blocked someone.

The plan is working perfectly.

You are Mrs. U. N. Owen, supposedly a person who sent the invites to the guests but really a pseudonym of the killer Justice Lawrence Wargrave.

You will work with Justice Lawrence Wargrave (DizzyIzzyB13) and his other pseudonym Mr. U. N. Owen (Nikanor) to kill off the guests one by one. However there is still another use for you. You have decided to confuse the guests by talking at night. They will think you can't be involved in the killings as it would require you to be in two places at the same time. As such you are a Night Talker and may write in the thread at night.

You may also consult with your team at any time here.

For you are Vera Elizabeth Claythorne, a young teacher, secretary, and ex-governess. You have taken mostly secretarial jobs since your last job as a governess ended in the death of your charge. You let Cyril Hamilton swim out to sea and drown so that his uncle, Hugo Hamilton, could inherit his money and marry you; however, the plan backfired, as Hamilton abandoned you when he discovered your deed.

You keep a diary of all the happenings on Shipwreck Island and write in it every night. As such you are a Night Talker and may write in the thread at night.

Notes: This was a mistake, I'll admit. In another site where I play night talking roles are not that uncommon and are usually town. Their limited use is that they can comment on the lynch result before anyone else is killed. In any case it is fairly clear that night talking does not work on this site!

You are the Tracker/Watcher and each night you may target one person and either watch to see who visits them or track them to see who they visit.

Fake Claim -

You are investigating Shipwreck Island.
After receiving a tip that there might be something fishy going on you decided to come investigate this stormy Isle.

You are Inspector Maine, an investigator from Scotland Yard.

You have decided to stake out and investigate the actions of the guests at night. Each night you may either watch one person and see who visits them, or you may track one person and see who they visit. As such you are the Tracker/Watcher.

Notes: I liked this combination role as it could help scum in a number of ways. If a power role was outed they could see who the protective roles were by watching them, and they could search for other roles by tracking people. In the end it was another example of me giving just a bit too much power to the scum. I have certainly learned from this experience that fake claims are like gold to the mafia and can really hurt town, and if I am ever going to do that again I will have to scale down the mafia's power as a result.

Actually this was me, and the reason was I wanted to see how many killing factions there were without my interference, e.g. if we had a SK as well as a scum team - I didn't want to inadvertently block one and wind up thinking there was only one when in fact there were two.

I also thought the value of this role wasn't that great on night 1, since I could easily block a town power role, so the cost for not using it didn't seem that high.

I didn't really explain myself very well to TheAdmiral though.

The chronic replacements killed this game. Late day 2 felt like the middle of day 1, in terms of discussion and the reads I had on people.

I really liked the flavour, and enjoyed reading TheAdmiral's write-ups. Thanks for running. I like the night talking idea, and I think it could work if you warn people it's a possibility (and not to post when the thread is unlocked).
Whoops, it was you wasn't it.

That is a good point about the night talking, so maybe I won't give up on it yet.

Budja wrote:@Th, I think you should place more deadlines. I've noticed that games without deadlines seems to die a bit. (Of course, this is from my "extensive" experience so ignore me if you like.)

I also really enjoyed the flavour and roles. It was a good game.
I am actually a pretty big fan of deadlines and I had planned to put in more deadline's but every time I did someone else needed replacing and I thought it would be a bit unfair if day ended with one or two people not playing. Also it would have meant I would have had to find a replacement before night ended as well so that people couldn't rule them out as scum etc.
