This is a Semi-Open setup, with Split Roles/Motives. What follows are some potential role PMs of loyal angels:

Seraphim:
Role:
You are a , one of the strongest angels of Heaven.

Win Condition:
You stand, like all loyal angels, on the side of God and against all threats to Heaven's peace. You win if all such infidels are cast out, and at least one loyal angel survives.

Powers:
You may either Hurt or Heal players in thread, as with all other roles. With your flaming sword, you may choose to inflict 2 damage instead of 1 with an attack on another angel, by mentioning the blade in your attack's optional descriptive text. Doing so will increase your recharge time to 36 hours, rather than 24. You start the game with 12 HP.
Cherubim:
Role:
You are a , one of the angels of Heaven.

Win Condition:
You stand, like all loyal angels, on the side of God and against all threats to Heaven's peace. You win if all such infidels are cast out, and at least one loyal angel survives.

Powers:
You may either Hurt or Heal players in thread, as with all other roles. You start the game with 9 HP.
Erelim:
Role:
You are an , one of the stronger angels of Heaven.

Win Condition:
You stand, like all loyal angels, on the side of God and against all threats to Heaven's peace. You win if all such infidels are cast out, and at least one loyal angel survives.

Powers:
You may either Hurt or Heal players in thread, as with all other roles. You start the game with 12 HP.
Ophanim:
Role:
You are a , one of the all-seeing angels of Heaven.

Win Condition:
You stand, like all loyal angels, on the side of God and against all threats to Heaven's peace. You win if all such infidels are cast out, and at least one loyal angel survives.

Powers:
You may either Hurt or Heal players in thread, as with all other roles. In addition, you may choose to
Observe: player
(via PM to me) for 72 hours. Concentrating in this way will prevent you from Hurting or Harming, but you will see if your target does anything secretly. You may not target the same player consecutively with this ability. You start the game with 7 HP.

Rules
  1. Ethical:

  2. Do not discuss the game
    by any means
outside of this thread unless your role PM explicitly says that you may.
  3. Don't quote any PMs/private communication directly in thread. Likewise, once you are cast out,
    stop talking
; you can say your piece once the game is over.
  4. Don't edit/delete your posts, even if you have the privileges to do so. It violates the integrity of the game and can screw up the game thread. I will take care of duplicate posts or formatting errors upon request.
  5. Treat this game as a commitment, to me and your fellow players. If you're going to be gone more than 72 hours on a non-weekend, let us know. I reserve the right to replace you, but the other angels have the right to cast you out first.
  6. Lying is a sin
    ;
    pretending
to break a rule (quoting a fake role PM, for example) will garner the same punishment as actually breaking that rule.
  7. If you have to think about whether or not you're breaking the rules when you're about to do something,
    ask
    !
  8. I reserve the command/color-combination for my own use; any other colored text is fine for you to use.
  9. Robust cryptographyand steganography are not allowed in my games.
  10. Remember, it's a game. It's supposed to be fun. It's supposed to be interactive. Do your part.

    Mechanical:

  11. The Mod is still God (literally, in this case). There are some unusual features in this game; most are public, but not all. Feel free to PM me or ask in thread if something is confusing; I reserve the right to ignore the question or give misleading answers if it would compromise the game.
  12. There are no 'lynches' or 'voting' in this game for thematic reasons. Instead, you may either
    Hurt: player
    or
    Heal: player
, once every 24 hours, to move them closer/further from being 'cast out' of the game.
These actions must be in bold, and must use exactly that verb (the : is optional).
Feel free to describe your attack or defence in
    italics
    afterward, though!
Cool points if you can use a dead language...

  13. I will not provide damage tallies more often than every 12 hours, but will try to provide them every 24-48 hours if changes in health have occurred.
  14. Once someone reaches 0 HP, they will be cast out of Heaven (no Healing will help at that point) as soon as I return to the thread to pass Judgment; after that, they may no longer interact with the game thread or players in any way not specified by their role PM. Regardless of how quickly I return to the thread, actions will be processed sequentially, so you may not Heal/Hurt during Twilight, for example.
  15. Healing may not take someone more than 1 point above their original total HP. You may not Heal (or Harm) yourself.
  16. Damage levels are preserved even after someone is cast out! A sample tally will look like:
    God wrote:
First Damage Tally of the First Æon:

    Michael has taken 3 damage.
    Gabriel has taken 2 damage.
Azrael and Belial have both taken 1 damage each.

Metatron, Lucifer, and Vassago are all undamaged.
  17. This is a Nightless game, and should need no deadlines. If you anger your God through excessive sloth, I will very...
    upset
(this includes someone deliberately standing aside from the conflict)
    .
Replacements also incur my wrath; any role that needs to be replaced will lose 1 HP
    from their maximum limit
    .

  18. Any questions about player damage tallies (like vote counts), overall game mechanics, or prods/replacements for players, mention it in thread. You may preface them with
    God:
    or
    Mod:
to catch my eye, if that helps.

Clarification: Actions which have no effect (healing someone who is already at their maximum, hurting the dead) will
waste
your action. In the Marathon Day game I was lenient because of the timeframe.
Rescinded because of game speed.

FIRST DAMAGE TALLY OF THE TWELFTH ÆONAlbert B. Rampage, Cybele, Nuwen, Seraphim, Shinnen_no_Me, populartajo, q21, roflcopter, WaltWishbone, and Xylthixlm are at 1 HP above their normal maximum.

The sounds of battle echo and roll across the heavens. Blades, fists, arrows and the deadly squeak of a hammer clash and shift, and a scuffle swirls around the indistinct form of Shinnen_no_Me. roflcopter's final thrust pierces her to the core; with a scream that rapidly climbs the scale toward infinity, she falls to the ground. A smoking hole opens beneath her and claims her with a flash of red and a rushing roar of wind.

Shinnen_no_Me,
Fallen Seraph
, has been cast out of Heaven.

Swift and deadly, the battle rages back and forth. Another angel crumples under the onslaught, but this time the reaction is very different. A slow light burns through the body, and a forlorn echo of pain rattles off of the clouds:
God wrote:GOODBYE HOOPLA... YOUR VISION WILL BE MISSED.
Hoopla, Loyal Cherub, has been cast out of Heaven.

Sorry about the delay in posting, I didn't expect my meeting tonight to last Five Hours.

Hurts on Drench count against Firestarter, as they're targeting the same role or 'spot' in the game. zwet's hurt on WWB does NOT count, as it was too early.

No it was not, apologies for that. zwet indeed has four damage, I overtyped the wrong cell in my spreadsheet.
Walt's last heal attempt does NOT count as he was already at 0 HP by then.

WaltWishbone's charmed life and second lease on heavenly favor came to an abrupt end with a flaming swordstrike through the chest. His body crumpled to the floor slowly, dissolving into a glimmering mist with a sigh.

The war raged on through the dark, and at dawn a glittering fog of ice crystals peppered the air, stirred about by the shouting and gesticulating. Remarkably few blows were traded, but enough to claim another angel, tossing them over the edge and plummeting as they dissipated.

Kinetic's desperate cries for assistance from his fellow angels are cut short just as Dripping Goofball approaches him; an unseen blow slashes through his back, cutting him nearly in two and leaving his body crumpled and broken on the ground, gleaming iridescently. A fading scream of rage ricochets off the clouds, with no visible source.
God wrote:KINETIC, WHERE HAVE YOU GONE? A SUDDEN DEATH BODES NOT WELL FOR YOUR STRUGGLE.

Weyoun's calmness in the face of certain death unnerves some of his fellow angels, but it turns out to be nothing more than a sign of his grace and favor in the sight of the Almighty. A glittering miasma curls around your feet as everyone contemplates what to do next...

Firestarter's action was superfluous (WLC was already at 0) and thus that action is unspent.

Without warning or prelude, viQleS crumples to the ground and bleeds out, the glow of his body sinking into the ground like rain. Upon closer examination, numerous wounds rend his holy flesh without anyone remembering where they came from. A mocking laugh echoes off the skies...

During the bickering, more screams of rage pelt your ears and lightning flashes across the sky above you. When you look back at the group, one if your number lies in a boneless heap, softly falling apart into sparks of light. Others look staggered and worn, and not just from the unrelenting combat...

Flashing blades, hoarse words, and the hysterical laughter of fear punctuate the gathering storm. One angel in particular staggers, then goes to a knee and gasps for breath as hate and rage combine to lend strength to unseen blows.

A dreadful silence falls over the battlefield as Tenchi tries to recover from the onslaught. A rising wind whistles in from far away, and Tenchi's eyes glaze over as terrible knowledge clouds his mind. He looks up just as the wind becomes a maelstrom, shrieking and howling through the crowd to strike him full force. His body instantly splinters into crystalline shards, melting like dew as a burst of heat radiates over everyone. A fading voice rides the winds as his last gleaming atom fades to nothingness:
"

Sera's gleaming body, while not as glorious as a full seraph's, still shone with peaceful white light as he bowed under the final attacks. His limbs folded in like a cocoon and the core slowly darkened to nothingness.

Xylthixlm shook his head as the inevitable became clear. A slow bleed-out left him with one fist pressed to the ground and another to his forehead, before his corpse sank and melded with the floor in a dissipating burst, like a visual sigh.

Apologies; an error in my spreadsheet led me to declare tajo dead when Nuwen was not fully recharged. I don't believe this will affect the game's outcome as the current plan is quite straightforward and would have been the same death in another couple of hours, but I apologize for the error.

q21 twists and writhes as the blows continue to fall. His body eventually sinks to its knees, head still raised to the heavens as tears of blood stream down his cheeks. A black mist creeps outward as his wings melt and disintegrate, leaving his body collapsing inward like a sun about to go nova. Indeed, just as he appears to die, a shockwave knocks everyone else over, tumbling them head over heels as his corpse shreds and falls in cinders and flakes. A howling rage scintillates off into the farthest reaches and darkness falls for a moment.

When the smoke and ash clear, Firestarter lies dead at the feet of the Fallen Angels, and clouds roil and twist at the limits of sight. The Fallen raise their heads and cry out triumphantly, only to be drowned out by peals of thunder and the slamming of gates. Another layer of Heaven is closed off from God's throne.

I'll comment on this tomorrow, probably. Suffice to say, it's my opinion that with a four-man scum team and an SK in a mostly-Nightless game, this was town's game to lose. Unfortunately, they did...

By the way, Tenchi's role was NOTHING like what you guys thought it was. I'll give you a little longer to guess though before explaining (unless Tenchi wants to tell).

vIQleS wrote:Was DGB a Ophan then? She got me - before I revealed... Lucky guess?
Sorry, yes, first post is updated. DGB was a Fallen Ophan, and she caught you right out of the gate. Fallen team had two Seraphs (Shinnen, Nuwen), an Arel (Giuseppe/Yosarian2), and a weak power role (Ophan). The Ophan was specifically designed to catch (Satan and) town Ophanim, as someone suggested in thread.
Juls wrote:Whoever said it before, I agree, I think this game was lost because of aggressive players on both town and scum sides. If this igame had been played at a normal pace I think more (including me) could have got more involved. Instead it was in turbo mode the whole friggin time.
I agree. I think this is simultaneously the second-longest Large Theme Game on the site, and the fastest Large Game
ever
(haven't verified that part yet). Town almost totally ignored its most powerful ability, Healing, in favor of ultrafast kills, and most of those had nothing near a consensus. Several people actually had really good ideas for how to utilize the setup by pseudovoting or mass healing between lynches, but the people driving their 'vig' kills made the rest of you panick, I think. Yes, just like the first game.

That was actually part of my balancing act for this game, actually. See, after Shinnen died the Fallen team
could not kill outright
six of the fifteen Loyal roles, or Satan/Michael (I'm still laughing over that claim). If you'd topped everyone up and stayed focused on killing one person at a time, there'd have been almost nothing they could do to kill pro-town-looking angels. DGB and Giuseppe could each store a maximum of 3 Rage, and Nuwen could store 4. That's only 10 HP damage; they'd have to do three more in-thread before they could kill a Seraph or Arel or Metatron. That's why I couldn't confirm anybody directly to Tenchi; confirmed Loyal Angels would have totally thrown the game for Fallen.

And yes, I had to give scum something to compensate for the increased size of the game/HP, which was kill-based Rage. Every time a Loyal Angel died, each Fallen got a RP, unless they were at their maximum. Having several people in threat range is what let them do that cascade of kills in midgame that freaked everybody out so much. Satan also got 1 RP for that, but he got 2 RPs on Sundays instead of 1. I really wanted to see how an SK would do in a mostly-Nightless game. He gathered more Rage than Fallen did (at least individually), and he
had no cap
. Here's the role PM:
God wrote:
Role:
You are the Spirit of Vengeance in this game: Satan the Adversary. The troubles of Heaven have brought you out of your self-enforced seclusion in Hell, and you're looking to capitalize on the strife to force God to give you an audience and address the problems that led to your exile.

Win Condition:
That audience and reconciliation can only happen if you eliminate the rabble blocking your path, so your goal is to be the last player standing. You must be alive to claim this win, however; mutually assured destruction will not work to your advantage.

Powers:
You may either Hurt or Heal players in thread, as can all other roles. In addition to those usual powers, the force of your betrayal and anger give you strength. Every Sunday at noon (server time), you will receive 2 Rage Points that you may use in a secret attack by PMing me with a player's name. This damage will be reflected in the next damage tally, but not associated with your name. You may store them up, with no maximum limit. However if you are killed/cast out, you lose any remaining points immediately. You start the game with 2 RP already at your disposal.

You start the game with 18 HP. You may not talk directly in private to any other angels, fallen or not, but you may PM me a message to deliver secretly to another player no more than every 72 hours. I reserve the right to reword/shorten it if it seems excessive (I suggest 1-3 sentences); I will tell you exactly what is sent if it is changed before 'whispering'.

Posting Restriction:
  • You are REQUIRED to use the  or Evil or  emoticons (or something equivalent if you have a custom one) in this game at least once every seven days. Once you have done so, the counter starts over; so if you use it on Sunday morning and Tuesday evening, your counter is reset for Tuesday evening.
  • You are FORBIDDEN from using the :D or :) emoticons in this game.
  • You are FORBIDDEN from using the words "God", "Jesus", or "Holy" in this game.
Violations of this posting restriction will result in the forfeiting of ALL stored Rage Points. Repeated violations in a single week will result in you taking 1 HP in damage for each additional infraction.
I had a lot of fun writing this one, and I have to give q21 credit for nearly winning with an extremely difficult role. That roleclaim was
inspired
! If the endgame-sequence had been ordered a little differently, or if scum had gone with the plan to mow down roflcopter instead of "Michael" with their Rage, the endgame would have been 1-2 Fallen, 1 Town, and Satan with ~25 Rage! In retrospect, I might have given him a few more HP, but I really expected town to learn from the first game and not Hurt willy-nilly.

Actually, there was a very amusing point about two weeks in where
all three factions
started bitching that they were about to lose, at the same time! q21 couldn't knock out a Fallen to save his life, Town was certain there were 4-5 Fallen waiting in the wings, and the Fallen were doing the math in the QT and coming up with impossible odds even after 10 mislynches (they were mostly right, too). Then about four days later, everybody had an equal shot of winning... I think that confirms to me that the problem with this game wasn't balance. I'm willing to hear counterarguments, though. I don't know if I'll run another one of these, this pretty much ate my life for the last three weeks...

I think what Fonz is saying is that q21 using his Rage Points made it LOOK like scum were limited in some other way, because he burned 6 and then 3 on Tenchi right amidst some other Rage burns by the Fallen team.

2 questions:
  1. Xyl, what made you so certain that Metatron had exactly 12 HP, and not, say, 15 (2 burns of 6)?
  2. Why didn't ANYBODY question the wisdom of scum having a 'cap' of 6 RP in a game with mass healing available?!?
My spreadsheet for those who are curious at the behind-the-scenes madness: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key= ... _2UzlrUDfQ. It was a lot better organized than in the mini, but still failed me in a couple of places (for instance, it's not good at measuring when someone has Healed and then later Hurt the same player).

Oh, right, two other things that made me shake my head:
  1. Why did everyone go braindead when DGB 'confirmed' Xyl and start treating her as town? That's a one-way confirmation, folks... and in any case, leaving DGB alive in the endgame when nobody mattered but the Seraphs and "Michael" was odd.
  2. I'm amused that if q21's revised kill list had been followed, Yos2 would have died early and things could have been very different. WHY didn't you randomize the list or follow a dead townie's list, rather than a list that could be manipulated by those (scum) still alive? That really cost town/q21 the endgame IMO, and somebody called it in thread (Firestarter?). There was zero incentive for scum to follow it through to completion if
    either
    Seraphim was Fallen...

I not-so-secretly hate extremely bussing gambits, which is one reason I like this setup; it punishes scum for throwing each other off the cliff too early.

Town should NEVER have let Rage Points stand unanswered. I forget who mentioned this during the game, but it was absolutely spot-on correct, even if you disagree with using Heals to counteract Hurts. It doesn't matter if you end up "healing scum", you're negating a massive advantage. Town started off able to heal 100 points of damage a week, ffs! Even mid-late game, scum couldn't have afforded to buck that idea if town hadn't already been hellbent on rejecting it, so they'd have had to heal up Raged survivors too or risk outing themselves.

When q21 received 6 (and then 12) RP in quick succession, there should have been a pause of 'the plan' and a mass healing. Unless every Loyal Angel had actually given up, and didn't care if he was actually Michael or not.

populartajo wrote:Also, could we have won if we had masshealed q21 instead of hurting each other?
It's theoretically possible - Fallen Angels and Satan could have more or less nuked each other, then the last Loyal Angels realize what's going on and kill q21/the last Fallen for the win. It's messy and mostly-undeserved, but until q21 raged on a townie (Firestarter I think) it was
possible
.

Has Xyl come back to the thread yet? I have a theory on how to automate this (minus Metatron's role, of course). Actually, after Cruise Ship I think the next variant of this I'll run will be an Infiltration of Hell by the loyals, perhaps to rescue the Metatron.

Firestarter was an Arel, and thus had 11 HP, not 8. Also, I
think
you had only 4 RP at that point but my spreadsheeting started to get a little convoluted that late in the game.

vIQleS wrote:The funny thing is - my plan was to try and do a fake hurt and then watch someone else. Can't remember who... Probably wouldn't have got that lucky twice in a row...
You were literally minutes away from catching Nuwen in that moment - Nuwen was the second player to use Rage Points and the target was already dead, so the RP never got used and Nuwen didn't get observed by you! Look at lines 100-121 in the summary tab of my spreadsheet... so your instincts were right.

q21: You're right about 5, and if it HAD made a difference I'd have gone back and checked, believe me.

The "error" on the last page when I thought Nuwen had gone too soon was really an awkward place for that. I accidentally wrote down roflcopter's doublehurt in Nuwen's category, then credited it to Nuwen in the summary tab, killed and posted about tajo, THEN realized Nuwen had posted too recently to be the killer. I eventually took a breath and sorted it out, but I nearly mod-confirmed one or the other of you as being Seraphim.

ABR: *shrug* Maximum, the scum in this game had about 40 RP, usable no more than 10 points at a time (and they self-limited to 6). That's only 3-4 kills out of a town of 15, if you guys hadn't insisted on bringing everyone down into threat range. If town hadn't ignored the ability to Heal, viQleS, Kinetic, and Tenchi probably would have lived much longer. And scum 'lost' about 6-8 RP because they were full at the time they accrued, because people kept swiftkilling!

But I will concede that trying to find a group of 3 in a pack of 19 is tough, once Shinnen self-destructed. The town just didn't scumhunt, though, almost everyone was drunk on the power of being a slow Vig.

Flay: How did you envision the Metatron role to have worked. I do understand it was not meant to confirm anyone, but what was it for then? I think I really failed to understand the entire dynamic of the whole setup until now.
No, no more Metatrons as roles. :D It was an experiment, based on the Soothsayer role that very rarely gets used. Sometimes they get to confirm one statement by another player, sometimes they can ask the mod questions, sometimes other methods. I had one in my Reservoir Dogs mini ages and ages ago, that asked questions and then got answers through what was playing on the 'radio' during vote counts.

You actually got quite a bit of good information, just not the direct stuff you were hoping for (like I said, Nightless games can't have many Cops that can confirm
innocent
roles). You learned something about tajo, ABR, Kinetic, and DGB's roles, and you ALMOST got confirmation that Xyl was pro-town... but by then it was almost too late.

Metatron had some pro-town benefits, though they're weird and unreliable, but it's also the town's first clue that there are things in the setup they don't know. That should have hinted that you couldn't count on it being the same as the previous games *poke tajo*

ABR: Stop throwing stones. Your pro-town credentials in this game are FAR from impeccable. You're delusional with your own self-importance, here. Only a handful of players really grasped what was going on.

Fonz: Speaking of which, how could anybody non-Fallen have known they couldn't kill someone from HP+1? That's Informed Minority knowledge, right there (I thought Xyl was gonna get lynched for 'knowing' how much Rage was used on Tenchi). But yes, the Rage Cap was not exactly secret knowledge, just one of those things that got glossed over in the race to kill. Irregardless of kill-based Rage, a Rage Cap means it's better to go from Full HP to 0 when you lynch somebody. Full stop. Look at the cascade in midgame when Scum kept dinging people for 2-4 HP and then gaining 3 more RP.

You guys are cracking me up.

Also, don't pick on zwet. He was NOT that bad in this game, compared to some of you other jokers. :P I think the speed actually agreed with him...(if he's ADHD like I suspect, that may be why he's trying to be in everything, but that's off-topic).

P.S. What did you all think of the flavor text? One player yelled at me at one point for 'confirming' DGB as not being the player doing the Rage, but I figured enough players know I'm too professional to do something like that...

I will go down fighting SCUM.

That's the difference, Kinetic. And that's what makes me a better team player than you.
Really, Albert? Really?

Good job guys, good job. You have a majority. Maybe we should go back to the vote count system since there's such a grand consensus. I'll watch with glee the rest of the game after I die.
Also, remember this post by q21, Albert? http://www.mafiascum.net/forum/viewtopi ... 47#1581247

Your nose isn't clean just because you declare that that half of players are scum at some point or another of the game. Anybody can hit the side of a barn with a shotgun.

I drafted a wiki page for this style of game in case anyone else wishes to run one: Angel Nightless. Feel free to add anything I left out, or ask questions if you don't know how something has worked in the three games so far.
