I'm just now starting to get into more complex board games. Or rather, board games past whatever Hasbro puts out. I've been playing Shadow Hunters for over a year now, and the game is still damn fun every time I play it. I recently purchased the Dominion base set after spending time playing the game on Isotropic... and goddammit, shuffling is a pain in the ass and slows the game WAY down. Any tips for speeding up gameplay in Dominion?
Nuwen recently bought Arkham Horror while we were staying with her for a few days and I really liked it, even though it felt unnecessarily complex.
What are some staple board games? I've heard some people mention Settlers and Puerto Rico as possibilities, but what are some solid games that everyone should have in their collection? (And I don't mean Monopoly and Clue).green shirt thursdays-

Had a huge board game night tonight with Gamma, Grimm, and a couple others. I began by teaching Dominion, but quickly saw the pace wasn't going to do well with the "feel" in the group. We pulled out the Game of Thrones game to learn the rules... we got them okay, but we didn't want to sink 3 hours into it since we had so much to play. I bought Ticket to Ride: Europe today as well, so we played a game. I liked it a lot, though we didn't get to play much. I can see the higher bits o' strategy coming into play, but it'll take a couple more plays to actually get it completely. Also played Cards Against Humanity which is always hilarious, and ended the night with a couple games of Betrayal at House on the Hill.
I think Betrayal at House on the Hill is an amazing game. The 1-against-all bit makes it twice as fun... tonight we got the Tentacle Monster (in which Gamma got owned) and the Crimson Jack SK thing. "Town" won both sets, but the psychological bit of strategy makes the game so enthralling. I think it's my #1 right now.
In Dominion... what would you say is a good setup for a game? The suggested ones don't lead to many "interesting" games, especially the "First Game" one. Gimme something to play that'll make me go "OH SHIT THIS IS WHY DOMINION IS SO AMAZING!"green shirt thursdays-

TBQH, I'm a little "ehhh" looking at Resistance & Cosmic Encounter... thoughts on these games?

Hah. Europe is definitely more time-consuming than the base USA map with the tunnels and ferries. I quite enjoyed it on Europe, though I think getting more familiar with the map will make it even more enjoyable. Right now it's a bit overwhelming with how many different routes there are and how long it takes to get places. Why do you dislike the Europe map so much?green shirt thursdays-

new webshow about board games. looks amazing. wil wheaton, felicia day, day9, phil lamarr, morgan webb, the chicks from garfunkle and oates, and a ton of others guest star. it's basically like 'celebrity poker', but with board games.
games played so far include:
Settlers of Catan
The Last Night on Earth
Munchkin
Small World

I posted to Wil's Tumblr to try and convince him to play Arkham Horror in Season 2 for the lulz, but he said each show is strictly limited to around 31 minutes and Arkham Horror far exceeds that range
He also said they wouldn't be playing any deck building games because those involve too much internalized strategy that you can't really display outwardlygreen shirt thursdays-

In post 62, FuDuzn wrote:Jeez, where is the love for Munchkin(I saw Reck just mentioned it, but come on!). Dominion is lots of fun(randomize the choice of cards before you play, becomes quite the bastard deck) and Catan(especially cities and knights) is a cheap thrill, but only Munchkin offers the drunken 'I fucking hate everyone I am playing with' thrills.
Also, anyone play Warrior Knights?
no, Munchkin does not offer "drunken fun"
I can maybe get people to play ONE game of Munchkin before everyone's like GODDAMMIT OKAY SOMETHING ELSE, because it just drags on and on and on. Not to mention I think "I fucking hate everyone I am playing with" isn't exactly a thrill and is only okay if the rest of the game makes up for it (which Munchkin does not). It has about as much strategy and planning in it as Grave Robbers from Outer Space
I can't wait until the end of May as I will actually be able to start picking up some good games again. The collection currently stands at:
Dominion
Munchkin / Super Munchkin
Grave Robbers from Outer Space
Kingsburg(holy shit this game fucking rules)
Ticket to Ride: Europe
Betrayal at House on the Hill
Arkham Horror (well it's not mine, it's Nuwen's, but she only ever plays it around us...so...)
I really really really kind of want to get house copies of Settlers of Catan and Game of Thrones, but I have a friend who has copies of both so it feels like a waste. Anyone have any old boardgames they want to get rid of? I've got a big ass bookcase just waiting to be filled with them
Also kiiiiinda considering rebuying Carcasonne since I've lost several pieces but I've already spent all that money once and don't want to do it againgreen shirt thursdays-

Do you have a local game shop in your area?
If so, I'd recommend checking out if they have a board game night (most do). Most game shops have a big library of games you can play in the store, so you can try games out before you buy them to see if they fit your tastes.green shirt thursdays-

We kind of split our time between LoL and board games pretty evenly.
I got lucky in the fact that my boyfriend likes to geek out, my roommate likes to geek out, and I happen to live near about eight other Scummers, all of who obviously love to geek out as well. Pretty much, I provide the board games and the playspace, they provide the company (and lots of times, the alcohol).
BSG really isn't that complicated after one playthrough. The turns get this kind of rhythm down to it and it becomes fairly automated.green shirt thursdays-

not at all, but the game would lose some of its charm if you aren't physically present to hold the dice and roll them.
seriously, the game comes with 130-ish dice and they're all different colors with different symbols on them and feel SO GOOD to roll, especially when that bomb-ass 8/7 monster that has a constant effect of YOUR OPPONENTS MUST PAY 2 ADDITIONAL COST TO SUMMON A MONSTER EACH TURN shows up

I will admit, all three games I've played so far seem to follow the trend of "someone gets ahead and wins the game", but I see no correlation between that and the mechanics. I prefer it to Dominion from an aesthetic standpoint, and from a "dice are more fun than cards" standpoint. I haven't checked out the expansion. I also hardly ever use culling unless I'm REALLY far ahead already.
I also think the amount of glory needed to win is a bit low. With 3 players, it was 15 points... the games are really short and don't give much opportunity for real strategizing (or having a real opportunity for using spells, for example).
Also, the Assistant-Reroll/Portal-DrawTwo combo is just lulzy.green shirt thursdays-

Diplomacy takes like ten hours to play and is much simpler in its rules. Game of Thrones takes about 2-3 hours to play and has complicated rules but once you get it it is a ton of fun. Catan is really shallow in its strategies but is a quick and fun "I have thirty minutes to kill" type game.
Having not played Diplomacy yet I highly recommend GoT.green shirt thursdays-

Dunno yet, it really depends on job offers. I'm in love with DC, but I don't think a sudden career change into politics would work out well for me (though I do know a handful of lobbyists up there who could probably get me a job). I've actually thought about getting involved in local government & politics for awhile, but I don't think my easy-to-Google internet history would lend itself well to a career in politics.
I've thought about Chicago a lot. I love the place and wouldn't mind moving there. I want to ideally move somewhere that is progressive/LGBT-friendly. I definitely want to live somewhere with a healthy, ecofriendly transportation system. Open to suggestions.green shirt thursdays-

You mean one with a traitor type mechanic in it?
I think The Resistance is probably exactly what you're looking for... but if you want a board game that involves some bluffing, Battlestar Galactica is probably the best. There's a secret "traitor" in the game, nobody knows who it is. About halfway through the game, more cards are dealt out and there's a certain % chance that another traitor gets added to the game as well.green shirt thursdays-

Absolutely. We just bought the Quarmageddon expansion yesterday as well, it adds a LOT to the game. Not to mention, it's nice to have storage options now.
Some of the new creatures are way more balanced, and the new culling rules make it harder for someone to just get a runaway win.green shirt thursdays-

YEP THAT WAS ME LAST NIGHT.
I got fucking wrecked by Greyjoy turn one. He took the Golden Sound with a march+0 on TURN FUCKING ONE. I had the perfect plan, too, to take Pyke turn three. So he fucked up my navy, then took Riverrun, then mustered, then jumped his massive fucking army across TWO SEAS to assault Lannisport after telling me "I just wanted the naval position, I'm not trying to fuck with you".
So I lost my capital and retreated towards Harrenhaal. With nothing left to lose, my goal now became "fuck with everyone's shit as much as possible", so I assaulted Tyrell at King's Landing and inflicted three casualties on him, essentially removing him from the game as well. Greyjoy ended up winning.
I basically learned "assaulting your neighbors early can pay off in dividends"
also our Stark derped hard and just let Greyjoy do all of that and ignored him instead of trying to apply pressure from the northgreen shirt thursdays-

Bought SmallWorld tonight. Highly recommend it... it's not my favorite board game of all time (as that honor still goes to A Game of Thrones), but it's a lot of wacky fun. The game is dead simple, as far as basics go. The "complex" part of learning it comes when you have to learn what each race and each special modifier does, but luckily there's a cheat sheet. While there is obviously some bit of randomness to the game (as far as what races show up as available and what special modifier they're paired with), that randomness is minimized by having to pay more victory points in order to access the newly flipped races.
The strategy of it is largely based around what races to pick up, but a lot of it also has to do with redeployment and figuring out where the threats lie and how to properly reinforce your troops. We just played on the four player map and it took about two hours since we were a little slow on the rules, but I'd image the game would take no longer than 90 minutes once you get it down pat.
Anyone else played it/have any favorite race/class combinations?green shirt thursdays-

We realized Spirit Trolls would be retarded since they'd NEVER GET REMOVED unless conquered and you could just reinforce everything with the troll villages or whatever and have permanent defense.
Sorcerers are GREAT. Absolutely fantastic race, not first turn, but if you pick a shitty early combo (like I did with Merchant Orcs lolwut I'm dumb) then have to go into decline early game, you can pick up Sorcs right when everyone else is spread thin and get three automatic territories each turn with good placement.

Not true, actually. It's a combination of risk management, strategy, and luck. There are plenty of things you can do to try to win. I think I have something like a 60%-70% win rate with just the base game at this point.
It really has nothing to do with strategy at all.

"Let me go to X location to try and get X item/unique item/spell/ability/whatever to help us out... oh wait, I forgot, it's luck of the draw, instead of getting an item, by character just gets fucking murdered instead!"

No no, I've played enough games of it. Probably ten or more between real life games and playing online.
You can plan long term to a certain extent, after that you're at the mercy of the game. I mean, about as much planning as you can do is, "You take care of that gate, I'll go over here or something and hope something good happens to me".
To be fair, there are other types of "Get Fucked by the Game" type board games that I really enjoy, like Betrayal at House on the Hill, and even Mansions of Madness. I think the difference there is that there's enough variance game to game to warrant multiple playthroughs. In both of those games, you get a different scenario that creates WILDLY different results/outcomes every single time, so the randomness takes a backseat to "What is our objective and how do we accomplish it?". Arkham Horror doesn't have different objectives or scenarios. It's literally the same wincon every game and the only gamewide variance comes from what Elder God you happen to be facing, and dealing with whatever minor effect that god has on the game.
I think if Arkham Horror were a much shorter game with a bit more actual brainwork, I'd appreciate it more (or even think it was a good game at all). But considering the bulk of the 'strategy' for the game comes from "which investigator is going to close the gate while everyone else gets RNG'd", and the game lasts hours, I can't really bring myself to appreciate as anything more than a beautifully flavored Lovecraftian RPG with dice rolls.

They're in the same universe and made by the same developer, and the only difference is instead of random card draw in Arkham Horror, it's random dice rolls in Elder Sign. Also, IIRC, you can move wherever the hell you want in Elder Sign, while in Arkham Horror, you're limited by your speed.green shirt thursdays-
