VOTE: Town Looter

Reason:
Shot through the heart and you're to blame.

This is my first game out of the newbie forum. Question: "The townvmafia numbers are confirmed to be 16v5," so this is definitely two factions? No worrying about more than one mafia or a serial killer?

I was bored waiting for this one to start and then the thread sucked me in. It was like binging a soap opera or a season of Game of Thrones.

I hoped it would help me become a better player. Mostly, it confused me.

I did notice a serious lack of engagement from you at points. You strike me as someone who likes a mental challenge and when you're allowed to coast as scum, you mentally check out. When the pinch is on, you suddenly become more active.

That you've made an appearance and are reading people this early suggests the basic set up of the game (find the bad guys) is helping to motivate you.

As days pass, I hope you remain that way.

I think so. It feels longer than two days. I've been lurking in the sign-up queue waiting for this game to start for awhile.

Odd question. I thought you'd ask if I'd picked up any hints or scum-hunting tactics.

I did.

The problem is that town had some very strong players... but those players still made poor guesses. By the end, I thought Almost50 was one of the best scumreaders I'd seen. I was sure town would win with him in the final three. When Lucky flipped green, it didn't expect it, because Almost's logic made such good sense.

I'm still processing it.

I'm not sure why this keeps on happening, but no, I'm not an alt. I started playing Town of Salem in early-July and switched to forum mafia because I like the slower pace. Other than that, I don't have any experience with the game.

In my first game, I argued that someone was mafia because they used emotes. Even if this is a weak observation, it's a step up.

I'm not really understanding why a naked vote is getting everybody up in arms. I'm not really hard scumreading him or anything but I had a little niggle and I didn't really want to leave my vote empty after I got off Stan. Its been a while but I vaguely recall norway proclaiming himself as town ad nasuem when he was scum.
That makes perfect sense. I had wondered if you saw something I didn't.

The conversation between Neo and Norwegian looked like town snapping at one another. Power Over Me's vote struck me as more calculating and opportunistic, in that he was aiming for an emotional response from Norwegian.

It could be because he genuinely considers emotional responses alignment indicitive or it could be because he wanted to create a narrative of Norwegian overreating.

I lean slightly scum on it.

The Stanley thing looks like nothing to me. There are days when almost all the interaction in a thread feels fabricated to me. That sense of unreality is probably because when you're searching for scum, you'll see traces of it everywhere.

That's why I called it opportunistic.

If Norway had been calm, there'd be no reason to expect an emotional reaction from a second vote.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt but this is bullshit.

You didn't test Norway for reactivity, you targeted a poster you already knew tended to react to things and are now spinning that reaction into proof of being mafia. I mentioned at the beginning of the game that Norway was a good scum player, and I think you're trying to capitalize on townie paranoia of being tricked by good scum players.

Even if you did think Norway might be scum, there's no way you'd be 100% sure this early and planting your vote here means less pressure on real mafia. It's a safe way to look like you're scumhunting while contributing little.

I read Nero and Bell as strong town.

I want to town read Glitch, but I'm lazy and for some reason when I read his posts, my eyes start to glaze over. I'll give him light town points and hope someone else points out if he's scummy.

72, Townlooter, Cat Scratch, and superbowl are all light town reads as well.

I expect more people to read 72 as scum the more he posts, but I went through a newbie game where he was miseliminated, and tends to be all over the place.

I do. And I think he's a solid townie as well. Not super but middle of the road when it comes to pushing the game. Which means I don't like that people are trying to eliminate him over weaker players.

What I'm asking myself is 'did scum start this wagon, or did scum see it rolling and hop on?'

Someone was supposed to ask 'but Reaver, why did you vote for 72?'

Thank you for asking, I shall tell you!

From my perspective, they had a single disagreement with superbowl over something NAI, voted them, and then picked up on things superbowl said afterwards to paint them as suspicious. This looks a lot like someone slipping onto a wagon after an actual townie and trying to blend in.
In post 220, 72offsuit wrote:

Risk/reward of being that active this early in the game is not very favorable
There are 5 scum. You seriously think all 5 are going to be low/medium posters and just allow town to form a town-block. Yeah nah
Yes that's what I said. You think there's a town block in the top 5 LMAO??? We've been at each other's throats
There's no way someone with a town mindest would misinterpret what I meant.
Let me break it down.

1. You say "I don't see scum in this top 5/6 teir of the activity list btw"
2. I disagree. I say it's highly unlikely that all the top volume posters are town, on the premise alone that scum would not allow town to dictate the game's trajectory by mostly just lurking. If there are active town posters, scum will usually interject and derail unless there is TvT aggro.
3. You say "You think there's a town block in the top 5 LMAO?"
4. That is clearly not what I said.

More votes on superbowl required

Choo Choo Choo!
"There is no way someone with a town mindset..." gives me pings. One of the things I learned in my first game was that townies have vastly different mindsets and ways of looking at things. I've read through 72's previous games and he's typically the person with the unusual mindset.

While I'm at it, I think it's clear what superbowl meant. Superbowl sees the most active posters as 'at each others throats.' As he assumes they're townie, the idea that they'd form a town block and need to be derailed strikes him as funny.

Could he have worded that better? Yes. But it's not hard to suss out his meaning with a second of reflection. This suggests 72 either had already decided to find superbowl's post 'scummy' or that he's too cognitively occupied to parse the comment. I consider this a possible scum trait--as a townie, we try to get into the heads of others. Scum already know who is townie and who is a baddie, so they're attempting to fake it.

Very short posts, comes off as pretty confident/arrogant, and makes little snipes at people. He'll be a bit more talkative and open after D1 and D2.

If it makes you feel better, it's possible he doesn't think you're mafia but is simply seeing how you or others respond to his vote.

The word dowel was used in Middle English; it appears in Wycliffe's Bible translation (circa 1382-1395) in a list of the parts of a wheel: "...and the spokis, and dowlis of tho wheelis..." Cognates with other Germanic languages suggest that the word is much older (deuvel in Dutch, Dübel in German).

Wooden dowels have been used in manufacturing and woodworking for many centuries. One of the earliest documented uses of wooden dowels was in Japanese shrines in AD 690, which were constructed using only wood, wooden dowels and pegs, and interlocking joints. Around AD 1000, Leif Erikson sailed across the North Atlantic in a ship that was largely constructed of overlapping planks held together by wooden dowels and iron nails. The wooden dowels did not rust and thus were more reliable than iron for long expeditions.

I don't think of myself as a troll. I just enjoy eliminating people and don't have a ton of patience.

One of the reasons I was excited to leave newbies for normals is that I wanted vigilante. All the scum-hunting and no bothering with convincing others you're right. It's the perfect role!

Actually, maybe SK is better. That way if you get a townie, you don't have to feel bad.

I hate wagon-jumpers.

It would be one thing if Glitch posted, you considered his words, and decided that he shouldn't be eliminated. Instead he hit L-1 and rather than having to defend or claim, all he needs to do is not post and people will wander off.

And are any of you pushing wagons? Trying to move the game forward?

I hope this doesn't become a habit.

I guess Glitch is flaking. So we can sit around and wait for their replacement, but we won't end up eliminating them.

Or we could eliminate them while they're gone. Save Manatee some time.

Or we could continue chatting until we have less than 12 hours on the clock and then run grab the first person offered up, because we don't want a no-elim.

I town read nero because he comes off as active, engaged, serious about scum hunting, questioning and commenting on anything he finds unusual, and pushing the game forward.

He's legit the only person to comment on my vanity wagons when it feels like the majority of people just skip over my posts.

Either:
1. He's townie, or
2. He's scum who is far beyond my ability to read.

Until I see a solid argument that he's the second or he does something I find particularly scummy, I'll sort him as the first

72 off suit is the only person left on the superbowl wagon. Let it go, dude! If you're town, put your vote somewhere useful.
Nero Cain is the only person left on the stanley wagon. Let is go, dude! If you're town, put your vote somewhere useful.

Hikari - You were so much cooler in the last game I saw you in.
ralph - Oh, you town read me now? Stand up guy, that ralph. 10 out of 10 player.

VOTE: Fwesnid

This is some low hanging fruit.

We don't all think that his claim is fake.

There are twenty-five people in this thread and several different opinions floating around. You seem to both be able to understand that (the people voting you need to 'get gud') and unable to do so 'we all think...'

The majority of people, in fact, do not think that, which is why they have shifted their vote from Nero and Norway's wagon of choice.

Glich,

I'd be interested in hearing your reads of people who are *not* Norway or Nero.

I find Bell and superbowl are my biggest town reads. Who are your town reads?

Who are you still trying to get a read on? I'm still trying to sort Town Looter and Marshmellow.

Almost 50 came in and immediately scumread you. In one game, you replaced in as scum and immediately scumread someone.

Also, Almost 50 is tunneling you and not contributing to the gamestate.

Did I get that right?

The issue is that other players have come in and immediately scumread people. But it wasn't you they read, so you didn't call them scum. You, Glitch, Nero, and Stanley most certainly have been tunneling one another.

If I add Almost50 to this group, have I named all the mafia?

Because that would be awesome. I've never solved the game on day 1 before.

The thing that annoys me is that I don't want you eliminated.

I like you and think you're a good player. A better player than I am. I suspect that you're town but I go back and forth on it. In the end, you'll probably be more useful to town than I am.

Which kind of pisses me off.

If you, Nero, and superbowl worked together, I think we'd get a town win. I'm tossing Bell in there as well, now that I think about it, because he has good instincts. I'm waiting for Almost 50, Titus, and Haikari to impress me. I think they have it in them and am willing to wait until D2.

Yeah, I can see that. I read your wagon post and a list where you had me as scum, but you didn't do into much details.

fweird was low-hanging fruit. Lapsa and Ralph are as well. If he had claimed VT, no one would care. You yourself just said that you're voting 72 despite not thinking he's scum.

I could have made up something about how I scum-read fwsined, but why? Might as well naked vote at that point. That way I'm not wasting anyone's time.

Nero could have handled that better, but I'd rather not have someone in the game who tells other people they're playing like dogshit.

What a wonderful idea. I am sure mafia would gain nothing from this information.

Wait no, that's an awful idea. Why would you even suggest it?

I, being a perfect townie, have never had a few drinks and then forgotten who I'd voted for. No, not I.

Just like I've never responded to the wrong quote, posted to the wrong thread, or voted for the wrong person.

But if there were another SJReaver who sometimes did that, they would still find you shading the wagon you're on funny.

No, it doesn't. Even as a 'scum syntax' argument, this is weak.

I know you're smarter than this so I'm wondering what the deal is.

I have no idea why people keep assuming there are vigilantes in this set-up.

Isn't it making Lapsa/ 72 more likely scum than Norway?
I struggle to see any value in those slots. I have to ask myself if town!Norway would. Lapsa's iso is a barren field and 72 a dungheap.

I don't know! Maybe?

This is so stupid. I was looking forward to reading Almost50's takes. I thought I finally got a strong townlean from Norway and then he pulls this. And Bell is flaking now. How the hell do you go from "I am sure this is scum and take responsibility if he flips green" to "Oh, I misunderstood a joke. Gonna unvote now" in under 12 hours?

Why are you so upset. If those crappy slots are not scum they'll be PoE'd by the time of maximum 2 days. I wanna lynch informative and wolfy slots. I literally don't care about voting flipbaity slots at this point and you shouldn't either.
Every time I feel good about a wagon, it falls apart. Every time I feel good about a townie, they do something scummy.

Also, Bell is 100% of the reason I won my last game. It came down to me and two other players, and I had convinced myself that the townie was scum while the one Bell scumread wasn't. If I hadn't decided to ignore my gut and go with Bell's reasons, we'd have lost.

Before that, I voted correctly because I ignored my scumreads and when with T-bone's. Before that, I ignored my scumreads and went with clidd's.

All these reasons I give for scum or town reading people? It's mostly bullshit. I just have feelings and try to make it look like I have a good case. So when Bell suddenly switches his read (this is the first time I've seen him 180 like that) or I town read you and you do something that feels really scummy, I get upset. And yes, I know it's stupid and I need to get gud. You don't need to tell me that.

Almost50 sounds confident. I can hear all the townie arrogance in his post. I don't think scum would be this bold. Picking a fight with Norway is sure to lead to pages of attention. Scum are cowardly, they like to hide. If they're active, they'll be like superbowl--inoffensive and trying to get everyone to work together.

I feel like Almost50 is ropebait here.

Why is it town indicative from him?

And you're voting me so by definition, you do believe scum can be arrogant because i've been quite bold this game. So i don't see why that should absolve A50 but not me.
This is the elimination pool I posted: 72offsuit, Stanley, ralph, Pete, Lapida, Marshmellow

If I had a strong scum lean on you, your name would be on it. I'm trying to pick between two wagons that I'm not fond of because the ones I do like keep on breaking down.

And yes, scum can be arrogant too.

Given you're the one being wagoned, maybe you should give us some simple reads. Preferably skipping Norway's slot entirely.

No one.

Almost 50, you've said you want to up your game here, but if you're town, how does dying on D1 help us win? And saying you're going to vote for yourself is pretty anti-town if you're green. Since when does 'play to win' mean tunneling on one poster, parking your vote on D1, and being eliminated without giving us even a basic read list?

This Almost 50 wagon makes me sick to my stomach and the Norway one isn't much better. It's D1 in a large game, and instead of getting rid of obviously scummy players or posters who add nothing to the game, we're going after a bunch of PR.
