Hello, hello. I'm Equinox, your inexperience-challenged (IC) player for this game. What that fancy title means is that I've completed at least five games on the site and that my play here will be bound by
this wiki article. To summarize, I have two objectives in this game: 1) to teach you how to play Mafia, and 2) to win.
As an IC, I will not be dishonest with you when I'm teaching gameplay. Feel free to ask me any questions you have about playing, any time. Similarly, if you're unsure whether I'm saying something as an IC or as a player, ask and I will clarify.
A few first pointers here:
1. Read and familiarize yourself with the rules. Every moderator's set of rules is different, so what you may have seen in another game may not be the case here. If something is not clear, PM the moderator or ask in this thread to make sure you understand it. Modkills are detrimental to your faction; don't let it happen to you.
2. Be proactive. A common mistake is to sit back and watch the IC and SEs do most of the work. Don't do that. The best way to learn how to play is to actively engage the game. Ask questions, generate discussion, and take stances. Nothing scares the mafia more than a townie who is not afraid to speak up.
3. Mafia can become a very heated game. If something in the game angers you, log off and take a breather. Emotion will affect your judgment, and your anger will inhibit your ability to make persuasive arguments. Anger also makes you a harder player to read, and transparency is one of a townie's best scum hunting tools.
4. Never give up. It might seem hopeless when a bunch of people are calling for your blood, but it really isn't. Talk your way out of it. Go down fighting if you must. I also strongly advise not to self-hammer as a town player, as that denies the rest of your faction information they need to find the mafia; the only exception is when it's very close to deadline (< 12 hours) with nobody else available to place the last vote.
