Chapter Thirteen: Familiar Scenery

An oft-underappreciated skill in any art is the eye. Attention to detail, a sense of framing, it all contributes to seeing and making the masterpiece.

Today's challenge is all about framing. You will submit a single picture. In this picture, you should include something that makes it clear it was taken for this game; it should include a piece of paper with "S3H" on it or similar. But this competition isn't simply about composition; after all, we don't have any professional photographers on hand as judges anyway. Instead, your goal will be to create the most mystifying picture. Whatever you think that means -- an optical illusion, a strange perspective or impossible angle on something ordinary, whatever you think will make the judges go, "huh?"

This is the final creative challenge and will be judged subjectively. The three judges will remain a secret. Highest average score out of 10 wins. Should there be a tie for highest average score out of 10, a 4th judge will be consulted that will rank the tied submissions, with the highest rank submission winning immunity.

What methods of submission should we use? Eg email, dropbox, etc?

You should be able to just post it in your confessional

Does it have to be paper?  The s3h?
Not from Kansas but loves Wicked so it balances out

We do not anticipate a 24-hour cycle for judging. House Tribunal deadline is still expected tomorrow. We should have results from judges shortly (no more than 1 to 2 hours) after deadline.

We will be extending the timer by 30 minutes for photo submissions. We still expect quick turn-around on the judging.

The judges gave some feedback! Or two of them did, anyway. Here's the more complete feedback if you're looking for it - we can't reveal the actual submissions for ID reasons, so I guess you can theorise about what they might have been from the feedback you read :P

Ashe

1) I’ll give a 5 the eyes are interesting and I got a chuckle
2) Took me waaay too long to realize that that’s actually a pencil for the mouth… but I guess that’s the whole point.  6/10
3) 5/10

Caspar

1) I’ll give a an 8 I don’t really fully get what’s happening in the photo but I like it
2) Oooh this is a good one.  Is that a chess piece?  What’s it doing there?  What’s with the purple lines? Why is everything so blurry?  SO MANY QUESTIONS… 9/10
3) 8/10

Dimitri

1) 0 - No pic
2) 0/10
3) 0/10

Dorothea

1) Is a 4 I’m neither here nor there with it
2) I’m not really sure what’s mystifying about this one… unless it’s how to get the Survivor logo projected like that.  2/10
3) 5/10

Edelgard

1) Is a 6 it’s fine, I think the shark is cute
2) Looks like a fairly ordinary scene… until you get to the paper.  Wonder if the stuffed animals are supposed to represent the characters on the kill list… 5/10
3) 9/10

Felix

1) - 4 I guess eye monsters
2) This is actually pretty much what I had in mind when I first thought of “mystifying”.  Very Escher-esque.  10/10
3) 7/10

Lorenz

1) 8 - I got a laugh
2) This one… while the scene indeed doesn’t look good, the mystification factor does.  I can’t even begin to guess how that mess started… 8/10
3) 7/10

Petra

1) 4 - it’s just average
2) Captivating, sure… what big decision is resting on the roll of the die?  Mystifying?  I’m not exactly perplexed or bewildered… 3/10
3) 6/10

Raphael

1) I’ll give a 7 for effort for climbing into the roof
2) I’m not really sure what’s going on here, but that girl looks really small compared to the vehicle.  4/10
3) 7/10

Shamir

1) 9 I really like this one
2) Um… now that is a damn good question.  My first thought was prime numbers, but though twin primes exist, not all primes are twin primes… I’ve been nerd-sniped, haven’t I? 7/10
3) 7/10
