Payola Mafia - Game Over

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Feb 02, 2006 7:10 am

Payola Mafia

In this game, lynches are determined by payoffs. Instead of voting, you post how much money you will pay towards having a particular player lynched. Whenever a player has the most money assigned to them for 72 hours, they are lynched and the day ends.

Players Alive (3):

BabyJesus
Vaughn (replacing Mr Stoofer)
Nightcow

Players Dead:

pablito, cop, shot night 1
draygn_mage, jack-of-all-trades, lynched day 1
Tamuz, townie, shot night 2
Thoth, townie, lynched day 2
help im a bug, mason, shot night 3
logicticus, mafia, lynched day 3
Twomz, cop, shot night 4
Cogito Ergo Sum, mafia, lynched day 4
PookyTheMagicalBear, townie, shot night 5
VisMaior, mafia, lynched day 5
the silent speaker, mason, shot night 6
inHimshallibe, night watchman, lynched day 6
Fritzler, police commissioner, shot night 7

Rules for Payments

Instead of voting, you pay to have a player lynched. Payments must be in the form of
Pay
dollaramount
:
Playername
. For example
Pay 50: Fritzler
or
Pay 80: PookyTheMagicalBear
. If your payment isn't bolded, it doesn't count.

Original rule used for day one only:
Each game day will last one week, with a deadline set at dawn. If a payment is made close to the deadline, the new deadline becomes 2 hours from the last payment. Whoever has the most money assigned to their name at the deadline is lynched. If there is a tie, whoever reached that dollar amount first is lynched.

Updated rule used for the rest of the game:
At the start of each day there is no deadline. Starting with the first payment, whenever a new player has the greatest-total money assigned to them, the new deadline is 72 hours from the lead-change.
When a player has the most money assigned to them for a full 72 hours, they hang.
If the day lasts a long time with the lead alternating between two people, I may call for a sudden death, where all players may PM me a final payment which all get added at the same time and then the day ends.

Unless you are spending your last dime (going all in)
you must pay in increments of $5.
If you try to pay more than you have, you instead pay everything you have.

Once you spend money in this way,
it is gone forever
, whether the player you have chosen is lynched or not.

You may make multiple payments in one day, and you may even pay against more than one person in a day. Multiple payments against the same person are added together.

Each player starts the game with $100. Each night, any money that you haven't spent accrues 50% interest, for example $80 would become $120. After interest is added each player gets another $50.

Starting right away, each player may PM me their will. You may choose which player or players gets your money when you die. You may update this any time, day or night, while you are still alive. If a player has no will when they die, their money simply vanishes.

General Rules

Inactivity will get you replaced, possibly without warning. If you are going to be away for more than 48 hours please say so in thread.

No talking about the game outside of the thread, except as your roles allow.

No small or invisible type.

Don't publicly quote any PM's from me.

Please be respectful to your moderator and to each other. Arguing is part of the game, but stay away from personal attacks and abuse. We are trying to have fun here.

We are starting with night. Roles are out. Please confirm, and start making your night choices, including your wills.

When all or most of the players have confirmed, I'll set a deadline for night actions.

Day dawns with sad news for the town.
pablito the cop has been shot.
He left no will.
In his will he left everything, which is $100, to Nightcow.

15 players remain, each with $100. Whoever has the most paid against them one week from this post will be lynched.

Remember, you must use increments of $5, and once you post a payment, the money is lost forever no matter how the day ends.

Well, um, that's a lot.

I think I'm fine with just sitting on my cash now. If you know something and this guy's scum, so much the better. If you're scum on the other hand, there's half your money gone.

Hmm, I was thinking that there might be a rush at the end of the week to see who can spend the most money and not get lynched. This might be interesting.

Actually, I think sitting on cash is what maffia is going to do. If they have more money than the rest of the town, they can juat outbuy them. FOS: Himab

I see the end of the week turning into a deadline lynch every week. Sadly twomz just put me way ahead of the pack for no reason. (thanks)

While sitting on your pile is a good strategy for anyone, not just the mafia, if everyone follows it nothing will get done. And "half your pile gone" is no handicap when we get more money every night. This doesn't mean that Twomz isn't trying to bull-rush the town into having no choice but to follow him -- anyone who has ever played poker should be familiar with the Big Raise tactic -- so I paid both of them up.

I think it may be to the game's advantage for the mod to (make a firm deadline but) not tell us exactly when the deadline is, so people don't try to stall until just before and do all of their playing as close to the deadline as possible. If we only know
about
when night is going to fall, we will have to participate throughout.
I think it's pretty clear that TSS's awesomeness did alter the roles each of us recieved, and thus he's obviously pro-town. -- Save The Dragons

I think this would be distinctly to the scum's advantage. We are in a mjority, and are in a position to ensure that we choose who gets lynched at deadline. An uncertain deadline gives the oppurtunity for a few players (i.e. the scum) to achieve a result contrary to what the majority (i.e. the Town) wants.

But they don't know when it is either. They could go all-in at any time, but that commits them when the town can still react and they can do that anyway. I'm more worried about them waiting until *just before* and then pushing the lynch minimally above the highest bid on them, without giving the town the time to outbid. If they don't know when it
is
just before, they can't do that.
