Help shaft.ed succeed in life

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Fri Apr 02, 2010 1:48 am

So I've got about two weeks to find a flat in Munich. I'm having trouble finding useful websites for rental listings. I imagine that a large part of the problem is that I can't read German as of yet. But I do have German speaking friends in the lab. So if any of you guys know any good websites for local rental listings in Germany please post them here.

My observations of Germany so far.
-You guys need to be open later. 24 hour grocery shopping is really one of life's greatest joys.
-And seriously what's with banks closing for lunch? Have you heard of staggering your lunch breaks?
-Get bigger milk containers. Biggest bottle is 1 liter. Seriously
-Why are you guys getting better cereal? I've never seen Kellogg's "Crunchy Nut" in the states (maybe the name doesn't market well) but man it's good stuff.

I was going to suggest you spread carpentry nails on the road and drive over them, but now that I read your post, I realize I can't help you.

Try immobilienscout24.de
Local newspapers' websites might be worth a look, too.

If you have a train station nearby, go there. They usually have 24/7 grocery stores (even on Sundays and holidays.. like today).
If you have too much money, fuel stations are an option, too.
If all you want to buy is some (alcoholic?) beverages, there's maybe a "Spätkauf" somewhere near you. Those are usually open around the clock, too.
And seriously what's with banks closing for lunch? Have you heard of staggering your lunch breaks?
I knew Munich was a bit rural in places, but that's ridiculous. Nothing here closes for lunch.

Pull over immediately and get to the side of the road! Stay calm and don't jerk it or anything, just get off the road.

If you have a spare i am going to assume you also have a jack and a wrench. Some cars have this at some random spot on the car, consult your owners manual. If you will be on the street side, try to find something bright to put a bit down the road to warn drivers that your ass is sticking out in the road. Remove bolts, switch tire, add bolts, drive slowly. Easy stuff.

If you don't have a spare, call AAA (not AA, check your speed dial) or a local tow company. If you somehow don't have a phone, time to start hoofing it to next exit.

Hope that helps.

Only been to Munich for weekend trips, so I don't know about the grocery stores or apartments. I can only recommend museums, restaurants, bars etc.

Have you tried bank branches near Marienplatz and other high traffic areas? You'd think they would have someone there during lunch.

I've only been around Schwabing where my lab is located. And I've only been here for a day. So my views might be inadequate.

Since I'm already asking for help:

I'm trying to download either google-video or skype. But both downloads fail on my computer. I can download the initial small setup file, but when that prompts the download of a second larger program file it tells me that the connection is interrupted and talk to the system administrator. I've tried connecting to two different wireless connections but no luck.

Also when i googled the error code it appears as though my firewall may be blocking the file transfer. I've got windows firewall turned off anyway. And am using McAfee for protection, but I'm too retarded to figure out how to temp disable it. I might also have some vestiges of Symantec that I was unable to remove previously.

Side note about Germany:
-The bratwursts give me diahrea.

THanks in advance!

Title change kind of ruined all the tire, or tyre for our British friends, jokes.

Munich was very nice when I visited last year, but much more expensive than most everywhere else I visited in Germany. In terms of finding an apartment...don't they use the regular channels such as classified listings?

I guess you could create an account at http://www.couchsurfing.org and try to send some messages or chat with some people there. The site is predominately used for finding a place to sleep when you're traveling, but it's probably the quickest way you could link up with a large number of english speakers who are currently living in Munich.
