I don't know if he's played anywhere else before, but this was his first game on this site. He not only played well enough to avoid being lynched *and* draw the Doc's protection successfully, he orchestrated a nigh-unbeatable endgame strategy for the town in the face of a double-Cop claim.

We really need to clear up the whole 'best newbie thing' and decide properly whether it rewards a single performance by a newbie, or is like a 'rookie of the year.'

How about splitting into:

Best New Player (for performance over the year)
Best Newbie Performance ('The Natural' Award or something) for a single performance in a game, with that game having to begin within three months of the player's joining.

What happens to players who join in, say, December? November? Not enough time to gain recognition, but enough time to be disqualified from the best rookie award for next year?

If I may bring up a baseball reference, the same happens in MLB. It's basically impossible for a rookie who only just wears out his rookie eligibility to win the ROTY over one who's played a full season. I don't really see any better way to organise a rookie award.

Nominations go on throughout the year. If you join in January and put in a sparkling performance in February, you'll get nominated in February. You'll have to wait a year to get your award, but the judges will go back and read the game you are nominated for.

I don't know about baseball, but it does seem a weird way to go about it. Why not simply extend it backwards, say, to October, so people who joined October-December 07 are eligible for an 08 scummy?

I think you missed the point - best newbie is limited by whether they joined this year.

But it's not that important.
