When someone refers to town as they (the way i read it) it catches my attention

"They" is often used in the conceptual third person.

As in, when talking to your estranged second cousin, "Hey Jeremy, when you call all your family assholes, they tend to resent it." The speaker is included in the "they."

This detour into grammar weeds has been diverting, but stupid.
