I tend to nominate players, teams and games that I think are really awesome. However, this issue arises for me a lot:
How many nominations are okay? I have personally seen two scumteams this year who excelled in different ways and who were really worthy of a nom for best scum team, for instance. I don't really know what other people have seen, though, so what I think is "OMG super awesome" might not be the best. I'm still going to nom/second/nth the teams, but for myself I've already seen two and it's just March. I may see even better plays later on in the year, and if I think they're worthy I'm going to nom/second/nth them too. That might mean that I (and others) are involved in the nomination of competing teams at the end of the year.
I guess my basic question is: Are more nominations desirable? Are we working toward having a larger pool from which to determine the winners? If so, then encouraging people in the relevant game thread to feel free to nominate people, teams, mechanics or whatever can be a valid way to solicit those noms. The downside is that we would probably need more judges to handle the increased reading associated with more nominations.
If we're looking simply to ensure that really worthy games/teams/individuals are considered, though, then I don't really see an issue with the way things are done now. If the same person nominated multiple entries in the same category, I don't see an issue with PMing them to ask their opinion about which one was the best if it comes down to that either.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

I don't know. I don't think anyone can know. I err on the side of yes, nominate, but I don't know how others do it and I for sure am not reading every game.

*shrug* I just don't see the necessity of needing to recognize one game of each type... like I said, I like the idea of having allocated 'slots' for GOTY finalists that come from each type of game to ensure fair representation.
dunno if this has been brought up (prob has) yet but what about a newbie ONLY scummie? Its only for new players, not IC's, SE's or "older" players that are in a newbie game. Rewarding newbies for outstanding play in their first or first few seems like a good positive idea. I think it also might help reduce the flake rate of news. Maybe the mod or the IC or maybe the mod AND IC pick one player from each game that played well.
I think its a good idea, just work out the details.
Of all tyrannies,a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

We just removed "Best Newbie" as a category like two years ago and rolled it into Rising Star, specifically because by the time someone actually won an award, they weren't really a newbie anymore, and the cutoff date just felt arbitrary.
IE, someone could play a game in January of 2015, be nominated for Best Newbie, spend the whole year on the site, win the award in March 2016, and have a banner saying "Best Newbie" when they've already been here a year and two months. And they'd technically have it through March 2017, which would be two years after they joined.
I think the better fix for the best newbie award without considering increased workload was to just hand it out twice a year. Then at most someones been playing for ~9 months when they get it and keep it until 15months. Seems passable.
What if we did a "Newbies of the Month" sort of thing where moderators/IC submit new players who they think excelled in a game and deserve some recognition.
I know if I was a new player to the site and I recieved a message that was like "Congrats! You're a Newbie of the Month! See more here: thread link" it'd be very rewarding to me as a new player and I'd feel more likely to stay.
I could try spearhead something like that if there was interest.
