Robot Prisoner's Dilemma - Mccoyn Wins - Round 2 in Limbo

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Sun Jul 01, 2007 10:14 am

Post by Pie_is_good »

It's 2548, and technology has advanced for even the lowest members of society. Nowadays, everyone commits their crime by radio-controlled robot breakins.

Of course, your robot and its partner have now been caught by the robopolice, and now we see who will stay faithful...

The Rules

Your robot will either choose "Friend" or "Foe," as will another player's partner robot.

Both "Friend": Both get +1 point
Both "Foe": No change
One "Friend" and One "Foe": Friend gets -3, Foe gets +2

Here's the catch to the game:
you do not make an individual choice for each round.
Rather, you will give me a set of instructions for how to make your choice each round. It can be brute force, such as "Friend, Foe, Foe, Friend, Foe...", or general, such as "First choose 'friend', then always choose whatever the other player chose in the first round." Anything works, as long as it gives exactly one choice each round.

Each player will be paired off against each other player 10 times. These matches will be isolated from the other matches, so programmings such as "If the other guy scored more than 5 points from his match with Player X, then choose 'foe'" are not legitimate.

To be /in, post /in and PM me your programming.

You may name your bot if you so desire.

Also, this should be a fairly quick game, so given adequate participation, more of these can be played.

Note: The numbers have been changed from "+1/-2" for Friend/Foe to "+2/-3", so that there is an incentive to defect. If this changes any of the submitted programs (which I doubt), you may resubmit.

Also, two newest players, PM me your programs.

YogurtBandit wrote:Hmm, So Do we send the commands for all 10 rounds?
Commands for all 10 rounds is acceptable, as is some kind of algorythm for how your robot decides to act each round (e.g., "if I gained points in the previous round, choose 'foe'" the next round).
mccoyn wrote:Is the winner the person who wins the most matchups, or the person with the most total points.
Total points; otherwise everyone would choose Foe every time.
Mokina wrote:Also... are you planning on publishing each of our robots' procedures (at the end)?
Yep, unless I hear a strong objection.

Oh man. This game is a BITCH to resolve. 14x14x10 games to figure out and calculate... ugh.

Anyways, I was happy to see the All-Foe bots lose; more than one person claimed that they had broken the game by submitting that bot.

Samruc and Sudonym had practically the same bot, which played quite interestingly - it was very, very cautious; it never lost points, but if the opponent trusted it for long enough, it scored big. Nice design, but both could have been improved by a "Always Foe on the last round" clause.

Mccoyn's bot was a very nice idea. It accepted the minimal losses from the All-Foe designs in exchange for repeated, large scoring against the trusting bots. Then, it played the inevitable backstab at six - cashing out on the extra points before the opponent defects anyways for the tenth round. Another important point of this bot was a subtle difference in wording - the bot only cooperated if
both
players chose friend on the previous round. This allowed the bot to sidestep pitfalls that Blackberry, Guardian, and Pooky fell into against Xyzzy's bot - In the setups, the two would alternate between Foe/Friend and Friend/Foe such that they would both lose a significant amount of point. With Mccoyn's bot, though, that didn't happen - the cycle would be cut off once Mccoyn dinged xyzzy for two of the points back.

For the next round, I guess I'll mod it again. Any suggestions for changes in point value, now that we've had a game under our belt? Any requests for rules mutations? Let me know.

Alright, I'm going to
start taking submissions
for the next round. I'll resolve choices sometime next weekend, so try and get bots in by Friday. If, by chance, 15 bots are submitted, I'm just going to close signups right there because there's no way I can deal with resolving more than that. I'll try and keep you updated on how many are in so you know if you have to hurry up and submit.

-7 choices in so far.

-I'm going to go ahead and
disallow randomness
. Partially because it's a bit against the spirit of the game, and partially because I really don't want to roll that many dice.

-As for the spreadsheet thing, don't worry about it - I'm not going to bother those who don't know spreadsheets algorithms to learn 'em. Plus, I'm currently attempting to become fluent in Java, so I may try and write a Java resolution for this game.

Mccoyn - if it gets to the point where a few strategies are dominating to the point where it's killing the game, I'll reconsider, but I wouldn't say we're there yet.

As it stands, if you submitted a robot that includes randomness, you may resubmit. Otherwise, if it comes time to resolve, I will conduct the required die roll exactly once and pretend it came up that way every time.

2. The previous round, both me and my opponent chose friend
3. 2 rounds ago I chose friend, and last round I chose foe, and it is past round 3.

Turn 9 and 10, choose foe always.

Meh, I'm burned out figuring out table-BBC. Sorry about the page margins. I'll edit this in slightly more normal hours.

...oh. Thanks, Mccoyn. I had about 3/4 of this done, I was going to post it all at once.

I can try and recalculate with Xyzzy's bot included (I PMed Xyzzy for clarification on his bot, the two lines in question, and everything else such that it was a legitimate bot). Or, we can move and I'll mod again, or if you don't want the wait generated by my slowness, someone else can go.
