I was visiting some friends this weekend who are all into Magic and after playing a couple games with their spare decks I was hooked. I got the red/black core 2015 pre-made and a few boosters. Probably going to be a long time, if ever, before I will be interested in playing at local tourneys or anything but I'm pretty psyched about this hobby and trying to get my wife into it.

FNM, depending on your LGS environment, can be a great way to learn, play against a variety of stuff, and have fun.

Draft in particular is a great way to get more into magic as soon as you have the basic rules down. I'd recommend the podcast limited resources, along with watching pros like Louis Scott Vargas draft on channelfireball.com.

Draft is great because its a level playing field. Everyone drafts a deck from scratch from booster packs, so you don't have to spend a lot of money on singles to be competitive. Its a good way to build your collection at the same time as learning to play,

thanks, accepting any tips or input on learning, deck comp, etc.

I'm interested in sticking with red/black until I can afford a big collection, don't know how viable it is but seems really fun

Like I said, draft as well as well as this pod cast:

http://lrcast.com/

and

the videos on www.channelfireball.com are great resources.

Also, there's a game called duels of the planeswalkers which might be a good place to hone your game a little bit

There's also DotP 2015, but people have claimed they dislike it for various reasons (more pay-to-win if you're doing multiplayer, UI is harder to navigate, card acquisition issues...). As a heads-up.

---

So I haven't played Magic since a bit after BotG came out (minus the JOU prerelease), but Khans looks interesting. Wedge set, interesting draft format (AAA // BAA // CCB), 8 promos per wedge for the prerelease... Not that excited about Morph though.

Flavor seems pretty blatantly "We need the excuse to reprint pretty much anything we want for modern in this set" slanted.

It's bottom up. Mechanics came first, the flavor came later.

Sort of. MaRo said on his blog that it was bottoms up in that the block was designed around the draft structure(which I would argue is an awful idea).

So were going to a multicolor set, then an awkward multicolor+something else set, then a completely different theme.

I'm interested in seeing what happens. The last time they did a weird block structure, we got Lorwyn which was pretty awesome soooo I'm optimistic.

Opened a Mox Jet and a foil Force of Will last night in a Vintage Masters draft; I don't play legacy or vintage so I cashed out on them immediately and my drafting for the next month or so online is now covered.

Probably, I was just looking to move them and my last VMA pack (ironically Mox + Force was my worst performance in a VMA draft) and rack up tickets for M15/Khans.

I probably would have sat on them for a while yet. I don't think those can do anything except go up once VMA leaves. I'm hanging onto all my duals for that reason.

I went 3-0-1 in my first FNM in a LOOOOONG time(and probably less than half a dozen all time). Missed out on a top 2 slot and a promo on tiebreakers, unfortunately.

Well the GP schedule works out nicely for me next year, I can probably hit...

San Jose
Cleveland
Indy
Detroit
Pittsburgh

without any problems, biggest issues will be finding teammates for San Jose and possibly Detroit.
