The battle was fierce as the attacking enemy mobile suits engaged those defending the

Archangel

. The battleship accelerated at full thurst toward the safety of Artemis, just ahead, where it would be protected by the base's lightwave shield.

"How much further until we can get past the shield?" asked one of the officers on the bridge.

"Just a few minutes," answered another. "We just have to hold off the enemy until then."

"Look out! Enemy vessel coming in hard from 30 degrees!"

The pursuing enemy ship had evidently anticipated that the

Archangel

would head for Artemis, and had launched their mobile suit teams to tie up the defending forces while they took an alternate route to cut them off.

"They're going to cut directly in front of us! We'll be cut off! Do we have any suits in the area?"

"Negative, we'll have to evade," came the answer. "Recall all mobile suits as we prepare to dock with Artemis."

The

Archangel

turned its guns toward the rapidly approaching vessel. Both ships opened fire simultaneously, as the

Archangel

rocked with each blast that
found its mark. The enemy ship spun to the right, placing it perpendicular to the

Archangel

's trajectory, as a row of missile banks opened and prepared to fire a volley.

"We've got enemy missiles locked on to us. We're too close to outmaneuver!" As the incoming missiles closed in on them, one of the recalled mobile suits darted in front of the

Archangel

. A segment of the suit separated from the main body and fired a burst of beam cannon shots, destroying many of the incoming warheads. The suit itself, piloted by Empking, concentrated all its firepower into a single blast, slicing the enemy ship in two. One of the missiles that had made it through hit Empking's suit, blowing it to pieces, but the path was now clear for the

Archangel

.

"Prepare to dock," came the order from the bridge. "All other mobile suits have been recovered. We will be under Artemis's shield momentarily. We're safe, for now..."

"Any word on the enemy?" asked the officer.

"Their mobile suits retreated shortly after the last battle," replied the commander. "We should be safe under the Umbrella for now. We'll resupply here and head for Alaska shortly. If they're out there, we'll be prepared to deal with them."

Later...

*BOOM*

An explosion rocked the asteroid fortress as power was cut to all systems, plunging the base into darkness for a few seconds before the backup generators kicked in and emergency systems were activated.

"What's the damage report?" asked the commander.

"We've lost power from the main generator!" came the reply. "The backups are only able to power critical functions. The lightwave shield is down!"

"What happened? A saboteur inside the base?"

"We can't tell...wait! Enemy mobile suits incoming!"

"Launch the

Archangel

! Scramble all mobile suit teams!"

The docking bay doors opened slowly as crews rushed to get on board the battleship. The massive thrusters of the

Archangel

roared to life as it pulled out of the Artemis and prepared to engage the attackers. Ahead, a small pack of enemy suits approached the base. A volley of missiles were launched, targeting the Federation battleship.

"Full speed ahead!" came the command from the bridge. The incoming missiles overshot their target, as the

Archangel

accelerated away from the dock. With no time to correct their course, they slammed into the Artemis, destroying huge chunks of the fortress. "Fire the Lohengrin!" came the next command. The

Archangel

's twin positron cannons fired a massive energy beam toward the incoming suits, scattering them. The blast hit DeasVail directly, vaporizing his mobile suit.

The

Archangel

turned toward Earth as Artemis crumbled behind it. The defending mobile suits took up positions as the attackers regroups and prepared to commence pursuit...
