I thought we were just going with basic vanilla items and letting people explore mods for themselves? That's how I've got it set up currently, but it's not too hard to adjust it to do other stuff.

Thats the problem. the way it is right now is unplayable. to fix it is going to require quite a lot of work, because you all already have all the new shit in the mods in the world, so we can't just go downgrade to 5.1.1, and to change to any other modpack to try to eliminate lag would cause us to start over from scratch again.

I'd happily ditch Xycraft 2.0 until it's stable for the ability to play for more than 5 minutes - 1 hour without constantly crashing

Xycraft is the problem? How was that determined?
Even if we lava'd all the Xycraft stuff, that doesn't get rid of all the world-gen stuff (ie ores) in already generated chunks though

you guys are missing the point.
shittyness happened when i updated 5.2
shittyness was not nearly as prevalent on 5.1.1. part of 5.2 is xycraft. to go back to 5.1.1 we have to get rid of new xycraft stuff as well as anything ELSE that is new.

oh I was confused I thought M and dav were talking about xycraft being unstable when maybe its just that going back to 5.1.1 means we have the issues maru mentioned about getting rid of new mod items and what not

Well..... we've only been on 5.2 for what 2-3 days? Do you still have a backup from before the update? How much would everyone lose if we roll back a few days? Would it be worth it to have a playable server again?

I'd be strongly against rolling back to before the update. I've done a LOT since then, both for myself and for the server. I wouldn't be against just scrapping the new stuff and going back to 5.1.1 though.
Why did we update before it was recommended, anyway?
