I think the M's might be a little unbalanced. They have 3 of the top 5 posters.
Fritzler will eat them for breakfast.

But yeah, some letters might have to be split into two and others (Q and X?) might have to be combined.

oo found it. http://www.mafiascum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2596

minis would take too much time to get through the sign ups. the amount of time for me to wait for the R game would be forever.

That one's different, though. This would have site-wide teams determined by starting letters. There would be no signups, because
EVERYONE
could post. They'd receive the role PM for their letter after their first post.

I'm imagining one game with one role for each letter, not one game for each letter.

Signup month-based teams would also work well for a mini, though there'd probably be a bias toward "recent" months. Team September for the win! (I'm trying to ruin the site here by raising a lot of primitive tribal consciousness and strife and division and stuff. Please humor me and play along.)

Kinda, but with a two-headed-mafia-like mechanic, and potentially site-wide teams that are known in advance. Letters don't flake as often as individual people.

Think it would have to fall under my "Special" heading as far as Queue goes; the Mod(s) would have to be very dedicated to keep up with the number of people that could potentially be posting. But it certainly sounds like a fun idea.

(Hey, do the M's get the Mod on our team? ;))

Hey! You know what'd be fun? A game where everyone could play, with the whole site divided into a number of "players" based on something like the first letter of their username or their join month. Anyone making their first post in the game thread would be sent one of the roles. Team F for the win!
Me and Yaw vs. everyone else. Sounds like fun. :D

Anyway, getting back to the topic of conversaton...
ibaesha wrote:2. Progressively taking a metagame stance to pressure and otherwise lynch lurkers in hopes that it'll do something to discourage the behavior. Unfortunately, the current stance of most people on the site is that lurking is allowable and not a good reason to vote for someone. Also, because of the general attitude towards lurkers, I think it'd just cause me more grief than it would do any good.
I don't think that gets you into any trouble. For a while, I had "lynch all lurkers:post or die!" in my signature so people wouldn't come to the mistaken impression that my constant lurkerhunting was any kind of scumtell. But eh, I don't feel the need to do that anymore; people generally don't have a problem with lurkerhunting, and if they do I just go back and explain all the reasons why lurking is bad for the town.

One thing I sometimes do that works is every now and then, when a game starts to stall, I go back and make a Lurker List, listing of all the people lurking in the game; either by "how long since last post", or "how many total posts", or "how many posts today", or something like that, with comments next to each one saying how bad a luker they are, or how scummy I think they are, or whatever. That works really well; most people don't bother to do that, so most people don't notice all of the people who are lurking, and everyone on that list suddenly feels pressure to post. It's also helped me find scum in some games as well.

Any ways for dealing with lurking mods?

Can someone who knows or IMs bluesoul poke him in the head to get Snakes on a Plane mafia opened again? I'd hate for it to be abandoned.

I'd tried poking him on IM the last time I've saw him online. He promptly went offline.

The correct way of dealing with lurking mods is have backup mods/draft replacement mods.
I replaced into Chess Mafia for 6 months, and all I got was a win and this lousy sig.

Maybe mafiascum.net would be better off with an ethic that says "don't sign up for a game if you're not going to be enthusiastic about participating in that game". It seems hard to be enthusiastic about 10 different games at the same time.

(shrug) I'm in more then that, and I think I'm more enthusiastic about them them many of the people in the games. How many games your in is not really the issue.

It's possible to post regularly, and not be enthusiastic. I'm willing to believe that you're at least as enthusiastic about each individual game as the average player in that game, but you'd probably be more enthusiastic about them if you played fewer games, and that in turn might inspire the other people in those games to post more...

(shrug) Well, I will say I'm a bit more streached then I want to be, as I signed up for the games during the summer and have less time now that the school year's started. Nonetheless, it's possible to be enthusiastic about quite a few games at once.

This is definitely true. For me, enthusiasm comes with the game. Either the setup is interesting (like ORB Mafia), the theme interests me (like Blizzard Mafia), or the happenings interest me.

I usually need something to really get "in" a game. An interesting discussion, an interesting role, those things usually do that.
