Don't you mean that all other things being equal, newbies are just as likely to be scum as non-newbies are? Most games have more townies than scum, and if you're a Bayesian, behavior influenced by the random choice can give you information about what the random choice was. Some newbies will always look scummy, regardless of whether or not they're town, but some will be worse when they're scum.
