How many cards would we do in the deck? I think I can get some good cards done at a reasonable cost.

Mith's jeepfest setup seems to have 46 -- so might as well make it 52, so they can double as playing cards.

http://www.card-press.com/superdeck.htm

seems pretty affordable -- custom pictures for 54 cards.

Starts at 10.95 per deck, for an order of 20 -- and gives discounts for bigger orders.

*Edit* just noticed a $295 setup fee, so not quite as affordable, but still not too bad if we were to order 100 or so. I know I personally would buy 2 or 3 decks at $10 a piece.

That's the *starting* setup fee, too.

Oh well -- thats just the first thing I came up with google. I'm sure we can find a better deal, but I'm willing to pay $10-$20 for a deck.

I really don't think they should have playing cards on them. I hate it when games become "I am the 3 of diamonds you lieing harlot!"

I also don't think avatars would be a good idea.
Copyright issues aside, it would likely just confuse all the people who've never played mafia before.

Well that could be against the rules, I just think it would be nice to have a double use for them, or it would be 'more' worth the money.

Anyways, if decks were $10-20 I'd buy two probably. 1 for me and 1 for my brother.

I think there should be a t-shirt design contest to see what awesome designs we can come up with. Then we can choose from as many diff. t-shirts as we want to have produced.

Just another "I haven't forgotten about this" note. Expect something substantial on one or the other by Christmas (if not both). Ideally, I'd like to have something available *for* Christmas, but that's just not feasible I think.

That sounds good to me except I wouldn't use the word harlot. I like the idea of them doubling as playing cards. It is easy to remember the count and we could remember cards like in your example.

Anyway I would buy 1 and check out the quality and then maybe buy 2 more (only more than one if they double as playing cards and are close to KEM quality).

Actually, I thought about doing a mafia series. :P It'd actually be kind of cool, but it'd be a lot of work to put together. I actually know a few people though that could help out... I think my sister has a friend who is in Universal or something like that.

Obviously the sensible way to go.

Can I suggest that you get a proper, written agreement with the creator(s) of the original art before starting production.

I also suggest that jeep/mith, as the operators of the mafiascum site (and therefore owners of the goodwil in the name "mafiascum.net") are parties to the agreement.

Prior agreement can an save an awful lot of problems later, when the sales reach $1 million and everyone is in court fighting over who owns the rights to the product. I'd be happy to look any such agreement over.
Jeep already commented on the copyright thing, but just to make it clear (because if there's
any
profit involved, it's almost guaranteed you'll get in BIG trouble for copyright infringement) essentially under the US copyright law, any original (i.e. not copied) piece of work is considered copyrighted material by the person who made the piece of work.

Now you can try to recreate something, so for instance I grab a pencil and draw a picture of something that just happens to look a lot like Mickey Mouse, then I have not (I don't think, I should check) broken any laws, but if I make a copy of it with say.. a copier I have. So for any original artwork, it'd probably be best to find somebody/people from the forums to do them, and sign something giving you permission to use them. I can do fair pictures in photoshop given enough time and persistence, but I think you can find much better than me for pics.

warpdragon wrote:What about role based t-shirts?
As for this idea, I like it, however with the extra cost/t-shirt design, I think it would start costing too much. I think we're better starting off with mostly just logo and such shirts, and if we actually do good with those, expand into basic roles like mafia, doc, cop, townie, and if we continue to do good, start expanding into more roles, but I don't think we'd make it past the basic roles just because of the cost.
Iammars wrote:My nromal one isn't copyrighted, unless I can somehow copyright my own eyes.
If you took the picture, it's already copyrighted by you.
Mastermind of Sin wrote:I think there should be a t-shirt design contest to see what awesome designs we can come up with. Then we can choose from as many diff. t-shirts as we want to have produced.
This is an excellent idea, and as an incentive, the winner can get a free shirt.

Also, I would love to buy some cards, I'll look up some stuff myself if I can. If they're around $10 I'll probably buy at least 2, but if there around $20, I might buy one. (Unless I can convince you for a discount. ;) )

*also, none of the card links seem to be working... alko is anxious to see the jeepfest decks! :(

This has been delayed for so long because stuff like this requires an artist, and no one was stepping up to volunteer. The cards (roles and text) won't be that different from the jeepfest cards (a few less scum cards because there's really no need for as many as are in there, replaced by a few pro-town roles that have become more standard). It's the art that I need.

That said, I do have one possibility for an artist; he's even sent a sample. So I will be in touch with him in the next few weeks and we'll see how it goes.

If anyone else is interested in doing artwork for cards (or t-shirts)
PM me
. Once someone has put significant effort into doing artwork, I'm not likely to be interested in telling him that someone else has volunteered and I'm going to use their work instead; but on the other hand, if there's more than one option, I'd like the community to have some input on what sort of design they would prefer (i.e. which would sell better).

If I remember the costs jeep looked at correctly, one deck will probably cost around $10, and there may be discounts for bigger orders. It depends a lot on how many are willing to buy though, because there will be a minimum order.

You can buy a shirt press on ebay for about $3-400 and custom design the shirts yourself. ;)
