It helps a scum team coordinate. It helps a town person to investigate (see Vi's argumentations why a neighbourizer acts like a cop). And in the end, since we have such a large margin where in we say a game is balanced, this simply falls within that margin. Mostly because as we can see in thread, people aren't very aware what the effects on balance actually are. They state "this helps town or this helps scum" but by how much and if it's actually true remains the question.
In the end people just want a fun game. I don't particulary mind if the mechanic is then connected with the setup or not.

I know of a forum where all games play a free-daytalk rule (people are allowed to PM each other at any time for any reason), and it becomes a really different game (try reading this strategy advice column, for instance). The metagame there has devolved into "work out who's most likely to be town, then everyone claim to them via PM, then they set up a really complex Rube Goldberg device at night involving as many different roles as they can in an attempt to verify/deny as many claims as they can, while meanwhile other people work out how to mitigate against them actually being scum". It tends to push more and more in the role-madness/crazy-mechanics direction as a result.
The any-daytalk-allowed mechanic might be interesting in a mountainous game, though, given that the village-leader concept wouldn't work at all; there's no way to arrange a Rube Goldberg machine with nothing but VTs!

That sounds like it's being turned (by the players) into a whole different game.
A Mountainous version would be great, but we'd need to know who it favours so we can put together a balanced ratio.
Also, I think two scumteams would really compliment a free daytalk game.

My guess is that it's a townsided mechanic; Neighbourizer is generally considered positive rather than useless (and more useful for town than scum), and the mechanic basically makes everyone infinite-shot Day Neighborizers. I might be wrong, though.
I'd also support making such a game Open Night (i.e. the game thread's not locked overnight and people are allowed to post there), just for logistical reasons (the players could simulate it anyway using a global QT or something, it'd just be messy to do it somewhere other than the main game thread).

I disagree. My proposition:
3:10 mountainous. Anyone can send PMs to anyone during the Day, but only scum can PM each other at night. All normal mechanics and rules apply, apart from those regarding communication.
