The atmosphere in the halls of justice was serious, but hopeful. Two heroes killed at night, and one, just a single one (but how many can be stomached, really, before one becomes the same monster one is trying to fight), tragically slain in the name of justice yesterday.

The greatest supercomputers known to man whirr and hum, the finest minds on the planet ponder and mediate, and yet what is to say that they can sift the immeasurable mass of information they see, sift it, determine the gems and the dross. Even the best and the brightest are humbled, seeing the task laid before them.

Still, serious but hopeful, serious but hopeful. The mantra percolates through their minds. And those minds focus quickly on a single suspect. Apokaylptika, they whisper. Apokaylptika, the whirr of the machines seems to chant. Apokaylptika.


First slowly, then as a mass, the heroes begin to move towards Apokaylptika. He barely seems to offer a defense, and the verdict is reached.

"Guilty," Hiplop cries, reaching out and grasping the shirt of the innocent looking man standing before you. "

Hiplop's hand tears away the suit and the shirt, revealing a familiar logo. A logo every hero knows. A logo that is burned in the minds of every child who aspires to put on a cape, every kid with powers that wants to change things. The cynical may scoff, the villainous may mock, but every heart knows a feeling of respect when they see it.

A red diamond. A yellow background. A large red S.

Hiplop stops, momentarily silenced by that logo, what it stands for. In the moment where he stands, open-mouthed, and stares, he is totally unprepared. Unprepared for the bright red beams that lance from Apokaylptika's eyes, unprepared for their force, the overwhelming heat. Hiplop is driven against the wall, slamming into it. Magically-strengthened alloys moan from the impact.

And then? Then he is amongst you. Faster than you can see. Faster than you can imagine seeing. Casual blows land like freight trains. Countering is impossible, dodging unlikely, the speed and precision betrays the skills of the wielder. For a moment, for a moment, everyone has to wonder. Earth's strongest heroes. Collected here. And together, are they worthy? Ten heroes are not so different from ten men, and are ten men a match for one... Superman?

Then a blow from behind. Magical energies crackle against his skin, and Apokaylptika screams. His skin boils and evaporates, revealing the metal bones beneath.

Metal bones?

Apokaylptika arm morphs, forming an energy cannon, and blasts his attackers anew. Heat rays fly from his eyes, incomprehensible energies scream at the end of weapons that didn't exist seconds earlier. Each one falls back now, Kast, Oversoul, zMuffinman. Friend and inHIm circle from behind, seeking to attack, but sensors catch their movement and send missiles screaming towards them. Everyone eyes him warily. If he reaches the computers, the computers at the halls of justice...

It is not to be. In a moment of distraction, CandleJack strikes. A powerful blow, shattering forcefields, and then the heroes are upon Apokaylptika.

Magic tears invulnerable skin, blows shatter unbreakable alloys, energy consumes that which can never die.

As one, you survey the torn remanents of Apokaylptika on the floor. They still move, weakly. You hear him gasp, his last words questions.

"Is this it? Is this the end?"

He sounds hopeful. Happy.

Unfortunately for Hank Henshaw, this probably isn't the end. Probably isn't the last. The technology he has fused with will never let him die, body returned time and again, strong as ever, ready to throw himself into combat. Leap into the heart of a supernova, plunge into the depths of a black hole, if but one single machine, one mote as infinitesimal as a speck of dust remains behind then Hank Henshaw will, against all his desires, return.

But it is

end. One of many, perhaps, but one for today.
