Dungeon Finder: Call To Arms!

In patch 4.1 we'll be introducing Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms, a new system intended to lower queue times.

Call to Arms will automatically detect which class role is currently the least represented in the queue, and offer them additional rewards for entering the Dungeon Finder queue and completing a random level-85 Heroic dungeon.

Any time the Dungeon Finder queue is longer than a few minutes for level-85 Heroics, the Call to Arms system kicks in and determines which role is the least represented. In the case of tanking being the least represented role, the "Call to Arms: Tanks" icon will display in the Dungeon Finder UI menu where class roles are selected, and will also display on the UI when the queue pops and you are selected to enter a dungeon. Regardless of your role, you'll always be able to see which role currently has been Called to Arms, if any.

Call to Arms is meant to lower wait times by offering additional rewards for queuing as the currently least represented role. To be eligible for the additional rewards you must solo queue for a random level-85 Heroic in the role that is currently being Called to Arms, and complete the dungeon by killing the final boss.

Every time you hit these requirements (there is no daily limit) you'll receive a goodie bag that will contain some gold, a chance at a rare gem, a chance at a flask/elixir (determined by spec), a good chance of receiving a non-combat pet (including cross faction pets), and a very rare chance at receiving a mount.

The pets offered come from a wide variety of sources, and include companions like the Razzashi Hatchling, Cockatiel, and Tiny Sporebat, but the mounts are those specifically only available through dungeons (not raids), like the Reins of the Raven Lord from Sethekk Halls, Swift White Hawkstrider from Magister's Terrace, and Deathcharger's Reins from Stratholme.

This system is meant to address the unacceptable queue times currently being experienced by those that queue for the DPS role at max level. The long queue times are, of course, caused by a very simple lack of representation in the Dungeon Finder by tanks, and to some extent healers. We don't feel the tanking and healing roles have any inherent issues that are causing the representation disparity, except that fulfilling them carries more responsibility. Understandably, players prefer to take on that responsibility in more organized situations than what the Dungeon Finder offers, but perhaps we can bribe them a little. While this system gives tanks and healers something extra, the incentive is being provided so that we can help players in the DPS role get into more dungeons, get better gear, and continue progressing.

While the gold, gems, flasks, and elixirs are OK incentives, we knew we needed something more substantial. We had briefly considered Valor Points and epics, but decided that wouldn't be working toward the goal of helping DPS players progress, and ultimately wouldn't keep tanks and healers in the Dungeon Finder system for very long. We settled on pets and dungeon-found mounts as they’re cosmetic/achievement items that players tend to try to get on their own, so why not change that up and offer them a chance to get some of those elusive pets and mounts in a way that also helps other players? Even if they don't get a pet or mount, or get one they already have, the gold and other goodies still feel rewarding enough that it won't feel like a waste of effort.

We think it's a pretty solid incentive to get tanks and healers queuing, give max-level players another way to collect the pets and mounts they so desire, and above all, to improve wait times for DPS players sitting in queues. In the case of lower level dungeons, it's actually not uncommon for DPS to be the least represented role, and so if this new system works out and we're pleased with the results, we may consider applying this same mechanic to lower level dungeons as well.

As a Frost DK, I'm okay with this.

Also, I was thinking of rolling a druid (whee alts) to try out tanking and stuff, once I get enough JP for some heirloom shoulders to make things easier. Also gives me something to do while I'm gearing up. Alternatively, I can run random normals and try and get a set of tank gear for my DK (needing for offspec usually seems to be alright), but that'll take a while, plus the whole "learning to tank at level cap" thing... yeah.

I'm elixir spec, flasks are always more profitable than mats. Either way, with the exception of Flask of Flowing water, all the flasks can be turned for a profit from buying raw mats fairly consistently. Giving free flasks will probably lead to a shitty flask market, and could possibly find its way into messing with the herbs too. I wouldn't be too surprised.

As for tanking, I'd find it easier to work from the 85 on tanking (especially over early bear tanking). This would probably be a good place to start if you haven't already been there.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to kill a single foe in World of Warcraft to hit level 85.

Fighting enemies is a big part of World of Warcraft. It even has "war" right there in the name, so you'd think whipping out a sword or spell from time to time to roast an evil turtle would be a requirement. Alas, it isn't, as a player recently hit the current level max of 85 without killing a single virtual foe.

Night Elf Druid Everbloom of the Feathermoon server pulled the feat off by only engaging in gathering professions and exploring, which both offer experience points of their own. She, who may or may not actually be a he, took on mining, herbalism, and archaeology, in addition to traveling to every possible nook and cranny of the game's world. Everbloom wrote on the Blizzard forums that she's been playing World of Warcraft since the day it was released back in 2004, and still discovered new landmarks in her quest.

Everbloom hit level 85 after dying just 25 times, though she absorbed 3,000,000 damage along the way too. She says she chose a Night Elf Druid for its healing abilities, rooting abilities (which can freeze enemies in place), and flight transformation.

If you're skeptical, a visit to Everbloom's profile clearly proves that she has no kills, and only completed 1 quest by accident when she opened a letter that came in the (virtual) mail. She plans to do it again, but without opening her mail this time.

Almost have myself geared in 333+. Need a relic (which I'm saving my VP for) and some new bracers (which I can run HoO or BRC heroic for, or hunt for a rare spawn in Deepholm). Then I just need to grind rep for my shoulder enchant. Here's my armory.

Stuff I know I need to fix:
- Slightly better enchants for chest/cloak(?) and shoulder enchant.
- Need a non-tanking belt.
- Like I said above, new relic/bracers.

Aside from that, I think I'm doing alright.

Oh, iPie, if you're still interested in trying out tanking, I'll see if I can make you some gear for it.

I currently have a belt, shoulders (meh?), hands, legs (meh), boots (meh), and a trinket. Anything else is welcome (better quality legs/boots might help too).

I probably should have started saving tanking gear sooner. <_<

[Edit] I can also get Hyjal's tanking neck (will be exalted soon for the cloak), Dragonmaw's tanking helm, and might be able to get leg replacements with a little more Earthen Ring rep (as well as new boots with Dragonmaw rep but I just hit Revered, so.).

So I still need a chest, bracers, and two rings (being that I can craft a tanking trinket with Alchemy as well). That's not too bad. o_o

The Dragonmaw helm is good. I'm using it atm. I also have the boots, once you get exalted. I'm using the Earthen Ring legs still, haven't come across a replacement for them, same for the Hyjal neck. Apparently the Hardened Obsidium set is only 289 shit, so I'm not gonna be of much use there.

Get your bracers from Isiset in HoO or Godfrey(?) in SFK. I've been using Breastplate of the Witness from a quest in GB. If you got rid of that already, then your options are limited to reforging something into useful stats for tanking. I can make you a redsteel breastplate, for instance, but it's haste/mastery. Rings I have both of mine heroic, but if you're Revered with Therazane, Felsen's Ring of Resolve is good. Siamat drops Ring of Three Lights, which I'm using, and there's a random dropping BoE in HoO that's only a 333 but pretty decent for tanking. I literally just DE-ed it earlier today, or I would've saved it for you.
