3 mafia goons
1 chessmaster (neutral)
2 masons
1 doctor
1 tracker
5 vanilla

shouldn't be too bad, right?

That looks nice. Should there be some sort of psychologist role, IE anti-chessmaster?

Also, does it need NK protection do you think?

An SK that makes his victims play chess for their lives?

EDIT: Could have a 'Deep Blue' Role that if chosen auto wins match and kills chessmaster instead of other player (or just autokills other player).

Sorry for double post:

The issue with the chessmaster playing is that I think it would be a little bit of a give-away to see one player playing in every game, and killing the loser.

The problems with a Chessmaster role:

Assume that both sides will make on average 4 moves each a day (so 8 moves total per 24 hours; I think this is a touch high for this forum). Assume the day phase lasts 14 days (which is a touch short). In that circumstance you have time for a 56 move game, which isn't really enough. (This is the weakest argument, but it's important to think about.)

Also, there's not a strong incentive to resign if you are losing. In that case the losing player becomes a quasivig; he can resign and save his opponent, or stall to the deadline and take his opponent out with him. In particular, if a member of the mafia is playing a member of the town and is clearly losing, he has a strong incentive to stall to deadline.

Finally, the difference in chess skill is likely to be vast in a mafia game, even with an announced theme.
I replaced into Chess Mafia for 6 months, and all I got was a win and this lousy sig.

Addressing these concerns:

1) When a player is notified that they have been chosen to play, I would predict their posting rate to go up, if only to make their moves.

2) This is a valid concern. Could it possibly be remedied with the following changes (not necessarily implemented together)?:

- The game does not end with the day, and continues on to the next day

- Some kind of timer dynamic to prevent stalling

3) There very well may be a difference in chess skill. There is also a difference in mafia skill in every game of mafia.

I think I read a Wild West theme game in which players could "duel" each other, executed using RPS. In this scenario, a player more versed in RPS could certainly have an advantage, but as I remember, the game worked out fine.

This is an extremely foolish assumption.

One can always negate an advantage in RPS skill by rolling dice to choose RPS moves. One can't negate an advantage in chess without violating game rules (I assume this role would have a "no using a chess computer or talking about the game outside the thread" rule.)

When a player is being attacked, or a bandwagon has formed on them, doesn't their activity increase? Isn't this chiefly due to the fact that their life in the game is being threatened? I don't see why this same threat-activity correlation isn't applicable to this situation.

In terms of the "skill advantage", I understand the point you are making, but I guess I am missing why it's important to negate these advantages.

This is also a foolish assumption. (It depends on the player, but there are lots of players who wouldn't change their activity in either situation.)

One game per day. kill the player whose turn it is at deadline/lynch. That should increase motivation.

I think It's an awesome role.

Also- make a mafia goon deep blue who autowins vs every player except for Garry Kasparov, who is town aligned. Garry Kasparov wins vs every player, period.

I think the solution offered by Nicol would remedy the stalling dilemma.

Maybe a ChessMasters game should go into development ?

3 mafia (1 goon, 1 deep blue)
1 chessmaster (unnkable)
1 Garry Kasparov
2 masons
1 doc
4 VT

Sounds better than that infernal game called Chess Mafia. And possibly more fun.

(open game, obviously) Although, it might be broken. (If chessmaster is lynched D1, the game will just become another normal mafia game.)

Alternatively, it could be simply a mountainous game, in which the mafia is a collective chess master, and makes their kills this way.

Hmm. 2:10?

That would force mafia to try and sneak one of their own in the games to reduce suspicion on that player. I kind of think it would detract from the scumhunting aspect. It also gives town no incentive to lynch, or even play while the trapped pair is forced to play. I think that the game would be better if the chessmaster is apart from the mafia faction.

This is my biggest problem with it (although the time-taken problem is NOT insignificant). RPS is not analogous because it IS possible to win any given game of RPS, just some players have a slight edge. If I go up against Sudo_Nym in chess, however, I will lose every time.
