My main objection to self-noms stems from my experience as a scummy judge: there are too damn many nominations for any judge to make a truly informed decision.

Allowing self-nominations will only exasperate the problem.

Wouldn't more games = more informed decision. As is you're not picking the best, you're picking the best nominated.

as I see it

more nominations = more games for the judges to review = less attention for each nom = less chance of the judges picking the "correct" nom to award with a scummy

Just like in many things, you'd reach a point of diminishing returns. Worthy games should be nominated indeed, but filling the judges' plates with fodder intuitively seems like a bad idea.

That was my experience as well (at least in certain categories). And games were a fair-lot shorter the year I was a judge...

I'm less worried about the 'trading noms' thing, because a) it's going to happen off-site if we forbid it here, and b) it at least requires TWO brains to think the game is worthy, plus the second/third/whatever. Players' self-image is notoriously unreliable.

And yes, I think one year we had a person second their own nom with an alt. Or was that an Open Setup?

hmmm... I see the best solution to self noms is to perma-ban anyone who does so. Also, I wouldn't have thought nominating people for newbie games is appropriate, unless it's the best newbie award of course. As I see them as separate from the rest of the site and more of a training field. Like awarding someone a medal in the army because of a training exercise?

I also find the idea of self noms troublesome as it would vastly increase the judges reading material, if no one else in a game noms it/you then how spectacular could it have been?

I'm just stating that newbie games aren't meant to be played to win, they're to give newbies a feel for the site and the game. Of course a win is good, but say if an IC did the same in the game, would they be nominated? Probably not, and they probably shouldn't be. However best newbie is more suited, though not yet as it's for more than one game.

Yeah, there are.

When I was a scummy judge last year, there was like a month when I was semi-lurking in all my games in order to try and read through all the games I needed to judge the scummies fairly, and there were still some games I had to pretty much just skim, if that. I don't think any of the other judges did any better, either. There are a LOT of games you have to read, most of them over 100 pages.

Less nominations=judges will do a better job at all of them.

for his Mickey Mouse fakeclaim in Kingdom Hearts Mafia.

I was a cop and had investigated him the night before, so I already knew he was scum. He used a day ability that had a gunshot flavor and that he claimed was a lie detector ability that would kill someone if they were telling the truth (and miss otherwise). This was his actual ability, but when I forced him to name claim, he had to come up with a claim that would fit this (pretty tough since it was clearly an anti-town ability), so he claimed King Mickey with a gun that would kill people for telling the truth.
