I don't think it's a coincidence that Chandra asked for Wheme's powers to be doubled, and now Chandra is asking to die instead of Wheme if we go for one of them

This makes me think Wheme has way more utility and we should probably start with him

I agree, that post by Chandra looked pretty scummy and just didn't make sense from town PoV at all

Wheme's abilities weren't doubled Day 1. He could have a strong role, but there's extra incentive keeping him alive after the role is doubled. Also I don't think distancing a little D1 puts Wheme at any risk. He hasn't been at risk all game
