I'm assuming Arete!wolf saw the writing on the wall, deciding to do a hail mary mafia fake claim to at least draw out a mafia, and they was hoping the mafia would continue to not claim cuz ydra didnt claim. They had nothing to lose since if they didn't claim, they would just get chopped.

Best case scenario the mafia don't CC and they get to live, worst case scenario they figure out a mafia player for the nk.
