President Kanye West's eyes snapped open and he immediately leaned forward, bumping his head on the glass pod frontpiece. Instantly remembering where he was--in Vault 667--he slammed his fist against the open pad and then open button and then waited impatiently for the canister to open up.
A light flickered. How long had they been in cryo for? Across from him he saw Xtoxm, skitter30, Enter, some of the top brass, richest donors, his people.
"If we're out, levels must be down enough that we can go outside,"
Xtoxm said, gripping his head.
"Well, for the air at least,"
skitter said.
"Any sort of metal objects that were left outside may still be irradiated."
"So we can go outside... we just can't use *any* tools?"
Xtoxm asked.
Skitter shrugged.
"Nothing that wasn't down here with us. We're basically going to be starting over."
"Well, at least we'll be the first ones out."
President Kanye West didn't like their tone. As though they didn't *totally* win this war. He was the greatest president of all time and his decisions had been the best. This was just a minor snafu and soon he would go on from being 'president' of the USA to being the one true KING OF THE WORLD.
He hurried to the vault doors for Vault 667 and then paused. They were supposed to still be sealed! He, the president, was supposed to be the first one out. The sign of him being king of the new world.
But something must have gone wrong with some of the pods. The vault doors were open, and as he made his way out, it looked like others had already begun scavenging during the night before.
Of course--he was king of the world, anyway. His REAL consciousness was uploaded to a server in China. This material body was really just a leftover that his bodyguards had refused to let stay outside during the cleansing.
As the rest of the survivors of Vault 667 began walking out, looking out over the scorched landscape before them, it was clear at a glance that the corpse near the door--poor Emperor flippyNips--had already been picked clean.
But not only that, it seemed like some other people were more freshly killed.
"Hmm,"
Xtoxm said.
"I can see a corpse up there on that ridge."
"And down there,"
Enter pointed.
"Someone else died in the riverbank."
"How dare they,"
President Kanye said.
"This was my vault, and this is my world. They're not allowed to go dying on their own!"
They made their way down to the body at the riverbank first.
"Beautiful girl,"
Xtoxm said.
"Young, too."
"What are those?"
skitter30 asked.
"Looks like
she was blasted by lasers."
"Certainly a distinctive weapon,"
Xtoxm nodded in agreement.
After that they headed up toward the cliffs.
"Hard to reach the corpse, but I can see it pretty well from here,"
Enter said.
"Looks like they were writing a note... 'HAHA SUC--' But they never finished it?"
"What's that they're holding in their hand?"
skitter asked.
"Looks like a radio,"
Xtoxm observed.
"We'll have to find another way up there in the night. But I'm more concerned about the fact that it looks like that poor bloke was
stabbed.
So both individuals probably didn't die from the same person."
"Unless they're a multitasking, multi-flavor serial killer,"
Enter said.
"Yeah but that would be stupid,"
Xtoxm said.
