Mathcam, I think you have the order wrong.
The way your example goes by the rules as I read them is this:
before any money is given out for this round the highest bidder takes half of the money he earned in the previous rounds and then leaves, collecting nothing in this round. Therefore the 900000 bidder would get nothing if this is the first round and be out of the game. The 700000 bidder gets 700000 if there's still enough money(and will probably win).
So basically every round the highest bidder is dropped from the game and half his previous money flows back in the pot.

I expected the highest bid to be around 100,000. Therefore I wanted to bid 90,000 to be safe. To be just a bit more safe I took 89,000 just in case others were thinking the same. I just should have played a little bit more safe then that.
I do think there must be something to this game when you can get a tie with a number like 89,000. I'm definitively /in for the next one.

I think that another possible improvement of the game would be to get cops to throw round number *2 or *3. That way quitting becomes a much more valid strategy.
