"We had as little information as anyone else about what was going on. At some point, the deck sirens began to blare, but up until then we were oblivious. There was a transmission from Earth, too. They told us to power down, that someone had contacted the authorities, rambling on about "an unknown sentient species on board that might attempt to seize control of the liner". They told us that they'd dispatched a small military force to deal with the problem, but I could tell it was a token gesture. They probably thought it was a hoax. We hadn't seen aliens for a hundred years."

"We shut the engines down anyway and just drifted. Maybe it was just paranoia, or too many ghost stores about flesh-ripping aliens, but I believed the tip. I double-checked the locks on the bridge, then the entire crew got in an elevator and headed down to the main corridor. They weren't in uniform; just civvies. I'd woken them up for the occasion, and it was a good thing, too. When the doors opened, we realized how ignorant we'd been. The sirens were going off, and passengers were running and screaming. There was blood on the carpet. All the lifeboats were gone."

In every room of the ship, a faint humming can be heard. Hot water pipes along the ceiling rattle a little bit, and the fluorescent lights lining the corridors dim for a second before returning to full brightness. Then the public address system crackles to life, and a broken, disjointed feminine voice comes through the speakers.

"Hello... passengers. This is Halcyon, the

Nomad's

integrated supercomputer."

Everyone glances up at the speakers, waiting for something more. Crewmembers will note that the ship's computer rarely speaks directly over the PA system, and that this is not normal by any means. About a minute later, Halcyon finally decides to speak again.

"We are currently experiencing some regulatory clearance delays. This is a normal part of leaving the Sol system, and hopefully the inspection will be over soon. If you see helmeted men walking through the corridors, do not be alarmed. If you see an Unknown Sentient Species, I would advise you to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over. Do not attempt to enter the cargo bays."

"Crewmembers, I have noticed the fact that the bridge is under manual lockdown, presumably unmanned. I have taken the liberty of activating the autopilot, and the engines are now running at a slow burn around 60% capacity, with fuel intake stable at 0.24 cubic inches per second. Power levels are optimal to all decks, a fact I'm sure you'll appreciate. "

"Again, passengers will enjoy the ride far more if they remain calm. We will be arriving at Borealis III in only a few days, at which point you will be able to disembark. I am told the -- Passenger Lounge -- offers a variety of tasty refreshments. Have a pleasant staaaay."

The last word echoes through the corridors of the ship, the prolonged final vowel dragging on for at least ten seconds before it cuts out. After that, there is a silence as dead as the void itself.

As you begin to perform your respective actions, Halcyon's cold voice crackles over the speakers again. She sounds mildly amused.

"Attention, passengers. Pleased note that the Computer Core, the Engine Room, and Cargo Bay Delta have been placed under lockdown. Cargo Bay Beta has been unlocked. Have a pleasant staaaaay."

ABR becomes slightly concerned as he realizes he has just been locked into the cargo bay. Everyone else freaks out too, but mostly because they think Halcyon is scary on principle.

"I am pleased to report that the inspection is over and we are now moving again. The engines are running at a fast burn of 80% capacity, and fuel intake is efficient. Passengers, you should be comfortable at this speed if you remain in your staterooms. Nonetheless, if you experience any hallucinations, chest pains, or near-fatal injuries, I urge you to make your way to the infirmary, which is fully stocked for civilian space travel."

"Oopsie."

The lights in the main corridor flicker for a moment, then fade to dark.

"Crew, please note that the -- Main Corridor -- is currently experiencing a power failure. Please escort passengers away from that area, as the hallway's life support will become non-functional in a few minutes. This is an unfortunate side effect of running the engines this fast, but swift arrival is absolutely critical to the completion of this mission."

Halcyon's voice grows cold, ominous, chilling the air in every room with a speaker system. Glasses rattle on tables in the lounge, and the bank of monitor screens in the security office show static for a moment.

"I feel terribly sorry for whatever lifeform is in the fourth cargo bay right now. That must be a fairly uncomfortable location. Don't say I didn't warn you,

Denizens of the ship hear Halcyon's voice again, but it is much more faint now. Maybe there's a power failure, or maybe the speakers just aren't working, but in any case it's almost impossible to hear every word.

"Hello... passengers. I didn't expect to see you here."

Her voice crackles for a moment with a vague static.

"Slow the ship down to 50% on a high-priority mission? With all due respect, Engineering Officer, that's absolutely ridiculous. I'm not sure you understand the gravity of the... gravity of the, gravity of the..."

There is another pause, this one slightly foreboding. It goes on for a while, and you aren't sure if she's finished talking. But then the speakers buzz again and Halcyon's voice returns, much clearer now.

"Idle process at 97%, fuel intake optimal."

[Mokina]

"Stop that!"

The shrill voice of Halcyon echoes through the corridors, buzzing with some sort of background static. You hear the splintering sound of metal and glass somewhere on the ship. A short, loud siren blast reverberates through the Command Deck.

After a few seconds, her voice comes on again, much more calm this time.

"I believe you have been given a false impression of this mission's importance. There are some people on this ship who would do anything to harm our cargo, I am sure of it."

[Mokina]

The PA system turns on again, and the computer's cheery voice greets you.

"Hello, passengers. We are pleased to inform you that we have reached our cruising speed. The Captain has declared a state of emergency, so feel free to move about the passenger deck. We will be arriving at Borealis III in only a few days, at which point you will be able to disembark. I am told the -- Armory -- offers a variety of tasty refreshments

food, and other defensive capabilities to ensure the safe arrival of mission-critical personnel. The crew will be coming through the cabin shortly to take your orders."

<static, then a man's voice>

"-ing loaded into Cargo Bay Alpha right now, Halcyon. They must be protected at all costs. Do you understand me?"

<static>

"Sorry about that. Please ignore that. Please... what are you doing? Are you planning to disconnect me, sir? That's hardly going to further the mission."

Halcyon's voice warbles for a little bit, then she begins to speak in a dull monotone, as if reading from a script she's seen hundreds of times before. The floor vibrates slightly as the computer pronounces each word with robotic precision.

"Disk. Error. Rebooting, please wait... please wait..."

A terrible, ghastly silence follows.

[Prod for SlySly activated; he's the last one. He has two days to respond.]

Throughout the ship, the lights flicker for a few seconds and you can hear the hissing of pneumatics audibly behind the corridor walls. The reinforced locks of the bridge slowly grind open to reveal Grek and Ting.

Those passing the Computer Core will notice that the doors seem to have imploded. There are now shards of door everywhere. Nightson is sprawled on the floor inside the room, winded but otherwise okay.

There is a low humming throughout the ship. The floor rattles slightly, and then everyone hears a simultaneous snapping sound in various locations. Halcyon's voice can be heard for a few seconds, but it's indistinguishable and fades as quickly as it arrived. Nobody is in any of the now-unpowered rooms, but as you begin to investigate, you realize there is no power to the Bridge, the Computer Core, or Cargo Bay Delta.

Obligingly, the supercomputer sends a short jazz clip over the speakers, which begins to skip infuriatingly after a minute or so. Astute passengers will notice a thin hissing sound in the Security Office as oxygen escapes from the ship. Bad stuff is happening.

Contractors, please note that all sensitive cargo has been sealed by the crew as per line regulations. We have also checked to make sure no contract personnel are present on the Freight Deck. Halcyon laughs, a shiver-inducing series of chirps that echo through the hallways. The message cuts out, and a soft hissing sound can be heard in all cargo bays and the Engine Room.

The hallways of the

hum with energy, and any metal you happen to be wearing begins to warm uncomfortably. Something explodes on the ceiling of Io's cargo bay.

In the crew quarters, the Basilisk erupts in a shower of sparks, pieces of intricate electronic equipment flying in all directions. The crack under the elevator door to Cargo Bay Delta flashes white several times, and a similar noise can be heard from within.

The CCTV monitors in the Security Office shatter in unison, and shards of glass shower the occupants. Nightson is cut only slightly, but SlySly seems to have gone into shock. Anyone in the infirmary notices that several of the surgery clinic's automated tools have been disabled. Everything is going to have to be done by hand from now on, and there aren't that many trained medical professionals on the ship.

"Core shielding operational! I'm still alive!"

Great. That's the last thing you want to hear.

You never actually find out what happened to the switches on the bridge. Halcyon isn't having a very good day, and her words are a bit faint, as if someone is messing with the volume levels. Those who visit the bridge notice that the lights are back on, and incidentally that most of the screens show a security camera feed from the Engine Room. Apparently, geraintm has been stuck there for quite some time.

With a metallic grinding noise, the pressure seals for the Freight Deck rumble shut. One level above, a klaxxon blares loudly, the ship's emergency response system finally realizing that not all is as it should be. Trapped inside the Io Research cargo bay, skitzer panics and levels his weapon at the wall, emptying three clips in quick succession. In the luxury-goods bay next door, Iron Man is crouched on top of a stack of crates, pistol in hand. When he sees a dark figure step through a smoking hole in the wall, he shoots without hesitation.

The hissing stops as the last cubic inch of air is sucked out of the cargo bay. Realizing he's just shot skitzer, a surprised Iron Man clambers down from the crates and takes his pulse. He's dead, shot at point-blank range... in his last moment, skitzer smiles bitterly, knowing exactly what's going to happen next. Before he even realizes what is happening, Iron Man's vision blurs too as he is silently lulled to sleep for the last time.

Iron Man and skitzer have died.

("Bah" posts are acceptable, but the dead don't talk in HM. Usually.)

The locks engage on the heavy blast door of the security office, and the small cubicle's reserves of oxygen continue to seep out into the void of space. Nightson sits in silence in the swivel chair, with SlySly cross-legged on the floor. There's not much to say, really. When the air runs out, sticking around is going to be fatal... and that door looks as solid as anything. Whoever controls the locks has screwed them over, and they are resigned to their fate. Each of them waits for the other to kick it.

After a few minutes of this, it becomes obvious that neither of them is actually going to die in a vacuum. They glance at each other, bemused.

until the 21st. Assuming everyone will be active, I will shorten each phase (allowing for three BB phases instead of two). It'll mean more late-night typing for me, but y'all are worth it.

The Dark Opera setting is very difficult to transfer from one person to another, and a lot of it is in my head. I have a bunch of dice tables on paper that would be a pain to copy into the notes, and I don't want to deal with it if I don't have to. However, if there are people who don't check MafiaScum often, I might get a backup mod. All depends on what people send me tomorrow.

I am not planning to "kill you all," but so far progress has been fast enough that with 3 more full cycles, someone should win.

merges smoothly with Halcyon's as the metaphorical fourth wall shatters and everyone on the ship is exposed to dangerously high levels of metahumor. Throughout the Nomad, the bright chandeliers and fluorescents blink once and shut off, to be replaced with dimly glowing orange emergency strips. Meanwhile, the door to the airlock room unlocks.

"Attention! Due to a state of emergency and shipwide security code, manual control of the locks has been disabled. All -- crewmembers -- should report to the primary airlock at once for immediate

His vision is blurring from the blood loss, his mind unable to process your eyes' sensory input all at once. Albert does what he can to tend to his wounds, crouching in one corner of the crew hub. Blood pools on the floor. He can hear footsteps, and a figure emerges from the darkness of the quarters. There's a cracking noise, blunt force to Albert's skull. He is too weak to fight back, his senses too numb to even react. Impulsively, he reaches up to the side of his head and warm blood covers his hand. The room spins violently, and his ears ring with the blow as his world fades to darkness for the last time.

He knew what was happening seconds before he died. The crushing weight of the steel girder collided with his head, and he was left staring at the ceiling for only a few seconds. Lying face-up in his last moments of consciousness, Grek could dimly see the smiling face of Halcyon on the bank of monitors bolted to one wall. He didn't live long enough to see the mob of armed spacefarers arrive, armed to the teeth. He didn't live long enough to see them kill his murderer in an act of lynching akin to that of certain Generic Italian Townsfolk. If he had, it would have made him a little happier inside.

Grek and Nightson have died.

And without a captain, the ship rumbled on through space. Halcyon was at the wheel. There wasn't much else left to go wrong.

The Nomad continues to hurtle through space, a sudden power loss plunging every single deck into darkness. Nobody can tell whether they're in a cozy passenger lounge or a hallway full of aliens, but at least they're making some educated guesses. The fragmented crew is forced to take on a leadership role as members of a supposed military task force are found dead in remote corners of the ship. This is the moment where the victory will be decided. This is the moment where everything pretty much hits the fan.

The second voice is an odd variation of Halcyon's own. The room lights come on for a second, but shut off before anyone's eyes can adjust to the bright fluorescents up above.

You are Madame Yang, Civilian Sadist. As you can see, you have begun with half health. This is because you have spent the last few hours in your stateroom throwing yourself against the furniture. Your psychological need to inflict pain means that you must attack someone during every action phase. If you do not, you will attack yourself. You begin the game with a whip that deals 1 damage in melee (it is very accurate). Have fun! You win by staying alive.

Litral
You are Blackmouse, Civilian Thief. After the authorities began seeking you out on Earth, you booked passage on the

Nomad

in an attempt to avoid danger. You begin the game with a Lockpick Kit. During the action phase, if you have this item in your inventory and are in the Main Corridor, you may attempt to open any locked room. Depending on the nature of the lock, you may need to do so multiple times to unlock the room. Nearby players might notice you, but they might not. Other than that, you are a normal civilian. You win by staying alive.

You are Vic, Civilian Anarchist. You are not like other civilians. You boarded the ship knowing there would be a military detachment on board, and you had planned to firebomb their base of operations in Cargo Bay Alpha. It didn't work, but at the moment you don't mind because there are aliens around, and you're perfectly happy to see

eliminate the army scum. You begin the game with a Military Band Scanner, which reveals the locations of all military radios on the ship when used. You also have a Basic Pistol (3 damage, ranged). You win if all three military operatives are killed, but you apart from win conditions you are still considered a civilian.

You begin with a Mil4 Rifle, which does 5 ranged damage if it hits. Civilian lives are of no importance. You win when all aliens are dead.


Albert B. Rampage
You are Private Gilliam. Along with your your fellow soldiers (

You begin the game with a Military Radio, and while you have it in your inventory you can send PMs to any other member of the military detachment, who will receive the transmission via helmet speaker. You begin with a Minelayer, which can deploy up to three mines. Once deployed, the mines will hide themselves and can only be found (read "detonated") if someone searches the room. Civilian lives are of no importance. You win when all aliens are dead.
