Rules
(adapted from Quadz08)

General
  1. Site-wide rules, as always, apply here.
  2. I reserve the right to change any of the following rules at any time. I will also inform the players in thread and via PM in the unlikely scenario in which this is required.
  3. This list is not necessarily all-inclusive. If you're unsure whether or not something is allowed, please PM me about it.
  4. Disregarding the rules may result in consequences up to and including modkill and/or force-replacement.
  5. If you need to talk to me in thread,
    please use bold.
Additionally, feel free to PM me with any questions you might have.
  6. DO NOT TALK ABOUT OTHER ONGOING GAMES IN THIS GAME.
I've been seeing this happen in a lot of games recently. Don't do it -- it can ruin not only this game for others, but also other games. I won't be lenient about this rule in particular.
  7. Please do not use hidden or encrypted text.
  8. Play to win.
  9. Please treat your fellow players with respect. At the same time, please try not to take comments personally whenever possible.
  10. Please allow for your fellow players to go V/LA.
  11. Please keep me in the loop about your own V/LA status.
  12. Purple is my color. Please do not use purple.

  13. Kdub is my backup mod.
If I go AWOL (I won't) or specifically mention that I am temporarily turning the game over to him, please contact him for game related issues. Otherwise you can simply contact me.
  14. Have Fun!
Gameplay
  1. The following vote formats are the de-facto standard on the site (aka votes should be enclosed with vote tags or bold tags. I don't care about caps/spelling/etc.)
    • VOTE: borkjerfkin
    • Vote: borkjerfkin
  2. Unvotes are
    not
    required.
  3. If it appears to be a vote for a player, I will treat it as a vote for a player. Please don't attempt to fool me or other players with regard to fake votes. Do not put votes in spoiler tags.
  4. A lynch is achieved when half plus one of the current number of living players are voting for the same player. If this does not occur by deadline, a No Lynch will occur -- there is no plurality lynch in this game.
  5. Twilight is the time between the 'hammer' vote being cast and the beginning of the night phase. All living players, including the most recent lynchee, may talk during this time.
  6. Players' alignments will be revealed on death.
  7. When killed, a player may make one informationless 'bah' post at the beginning of the next day phase and must be silent thereon until the conclusion of the game.
  8. Please submit all night actions either via <b> tags in your quicktopic if you have one, or by PM if you do not.
  9. If you have a night action and do not submit one, you will not take an action. I will not resolve your action on a random person.
  10. Player List is ordered alphabetically by the initial players' names.
  11. Role distribution is guaranteed to be random, determined with the aid of random.org
Deadlines
  1. Days will be exactly two weeks long. Extensions may be granted at my discretion for what I feel are extenuating circumstances.
  2. Nights will be exactly two days (48 hours) long.
  3. Players will be prodded after 48 hours of inactivity during the day, excepting V/LA circumstances.
  4. Failure to pick up a prod in 24 hours will result in replacement. Asking for replacement will result in replacement.

Setup

This setup is based upon the game Xenoblade Chronicles. This link may be useful to you to determine context throughout the game.

Setup Related FAQ
  • This game is
    NOT bastard
-- I will not attempt to trick you for my own amusement
  • This game does
NOT contain any of the following
: Cult, Lyncher, Unlyncher, Jester, Survivor, Wincon changes
  • This game
may or may not contain roles
    that are not considered normal
  • Flavor knowledge is NOT required to enjoy this game, but may increase your enjoyment of it. This WILL include story elements that may spoil the plot of the game.
  • Flips will will be of the form [Character, Alignment, Role name]. This will be all you're given in the way of relevant information.
  • I will be retelling the story in the same universe with the same characters from the canon game. However, as this is a different medium than a video game, do not expect a similar experience.
  • More specifically, scene/kill flavor is
    NOT RELEVANT TO THE GAME.
Every kill, lynch or otherwise, will be the scene of at least one character death (or a more mundane scene, if a day/night transition occurs with no deaths.) The only characters mentioned in the scene will be either the character being killed, previously killed characters, or irrelevant/minor/original characters.
The
Colonist
faction is the name of the "Town" in this game, and a sample (read: not used in this setup) role PM can be found below:

Hello borkjerfkin, and Welcome to Xenoblade Mafia!

Image

You are a
Ma’Crish, Colonist Aligned Vanilla!

Ma’Crish is a High Entia that lives in a Homs town and loves Nopon food. Ain’t that something. Anyway, more game relevant flavor would normally go here, but as this is not a relevant character, I’m just going to say that I really appreciate everyone joining this game and I hope it’s a lot of fun for everyone. You guys should totally pick up this game and dust off your Wii that you got for Wii sports in 2007 and then all this shovelware came out and you were like I gotta wait 5 more years for Zelda again? What am I doing with my life?

Abilities:

  • None
Win condition:

  • All threats to the Colonists are eliminated.
Game thread: [LINK]

Please confirm by replying to this PM with your full role name.

The following is game-irrelevant flavor. Such text will always be in brown-italics.

~Colony 6~
[1 Year after the Battle of Sword Valley]

Sergeant Illiana Morrison, having just relieved Beta squad of their second shift duty, settled in to watch the golden hues of twilight make way for the eventual curtain of night.

Gamma squad, currently on third shift rotation, took the watch over the front gate to Colony 6 from 20:00 to 04:00, after which Delta would relieve them. Illiana had always preferred this particular shift, as she loved watching the night settle in over the vast expanse of the Bionis' Leg.

"Anything to report?" the sergeant asked one of her spotters, who was concentrating on surveying the landscape.

"All clear, ma'am," was the immediate reply, the scout not taking his eye of his work. "We've seen a few fifty-three's around the past two nights, but they've obviously been just poking and prodding our patrols -- they haven't even bothered to engage us with more than 3 at a time."

"But you haven't seen any tonight?"

The sharpshooter shrugged, although there is no way Illiana could have seen it standing alongside him. "It's early, ma'am. They have the natural advantage at night, so it makes sense for them to--"

The soldier cut off abruptly. Illiana didn't need to see the muscles tense up in the man's shoulders to know something was wrong. After a good, long, thirty seconds, she nudged him. "Something I should know?" she asked as casually as she could, trying to mask the simmering nervousness she hadn't previously been aware of.

"Forest went quiet. Animals and small fry monsters usually provide a blanket of constant white noise. Something's spooked them."

"Mechon?"

"Wouldn't bet against it, ma'am."

Illiana ran to the command post at the front gate and sounded the alarm. She didn't need to do anything else. The front gate, already closed, was reinforced immediately. The men were already at the ready. Delta, Alpha, and those from Beta fit for battle would be reinforcing them momentarily.

She checked in with her forward scout again. "What have you got for me?"

"Contact still negative. I'm not even sure this is--do you hear that?"

Illiana was about to roll her eyes and reply that she hadn't heard anything when her eyes fixed on one of the supply barrels. A glass of water had been placed on top of it, no doubt someone from Beta neglecting to clean up after themselves.

And it was vibrating.

She looked up above her; her gunners were already manning the garrisons. She had a feeling they would be needed.

"Contact!" the scout yelled. "From the south, out of the forest! 7 or 8 of them! They look like giant snakes! I've never seen anything like it!"

Illiana could see it too, now that she knew they were there. A number of flailing snake like figures had cleared the trees and were lumbering toward them, making no attempt to hide their presence. She couldn't tell how quickly they were moving from this distance.

"Wait, no!" The spotter continued. "Not 7 or 8 -- just one! They're all attached to a single body. This thing is huge! Doesn't seem to be terribly mobile though," he candidly added.

The sergeant watched in amazement as the towering mechon lumbered toward them. And although it resembled a spider, it didn't seem to be moving with the agility of the organism it was obviously modeled after.

Her man quickly confirmed this. "Something's off. At least 2 of the legs are non-functional -- it's dragging them behind. It must be damaged -- I'm surprised this thing can move at all right now."

A few more uneasy minutes passed as the mechon dragged itself into the clearing between the forest and the front gate. And then, finally, when it caught a patch of uneven ground that it could not traverse, it fell over in a heap and lay still."

"No other hostiles," the sharpshooter volunteered. "All clear, at least for the moment."

"Hold your fire!" Illiana yelled. She'd need to send out an investigative party, she knew, and she dreaded it. The fact that this could be a trap did not elude her.

But if it wasn't...

This is all wrong,
she thought. Her men didn't fell this creature, and she wasn't aware of any other Homs colonies in the area. What sort of thing could do this to a giant mechon?

And more importantly, would it do the same to them?

Day 1 has begun.

Didn't check out this particular case yet, but reminding everyone of this rule again just in case:

DO NOT TALK ABOUT OTHER ONGOING GAMES IN THIS GAME. I've been seeing this happen in a lot of games recently. Don't do it -- it can ruin not only this game for others, but also other games. I won't be lenient about this rule in particular.
Please be conscientious about what you post.

Due to the holiday weekend, I will be giving more leniency than usual on prods.

I'm going to give dntfkingcare an extra day to pick his up and I'm also going to wait an extra day before sending out new prods. Enjoy the weekend.

I will not comment on such a scenario.

The rules should clarify lines of communication that are considered inappropriate topics for in-game conversation. Any hypothetical ruling I give to someone about what they may or not talk about would simply be a restatement, clarification, or interpretation of those rules.

~Eryth Sea~
1 month after the Colony 6 Incident

He had waited here for centuries, perhaps millennia. The exact period of time was not something he had ever cared to measure.

But he could feel it -- the end was in sight. The one chosen by fate would begin his pilgrimage, culminating at this very spot, high above the ocean. Zanza, progenitor of all life on Bionis, would finally be released.

And those who imprisoned him here would find exactly to what degree his wrath had been magnified since the last time the mortal races stood against him.

Knowing he was on the brink of success, Zanza had all but committed to letting his mind wander to the self-congratulatory types of musings that he was prone to, when the stone door cutting him off from the outside world rumbled.

This is odd.
Zanza thought to himself.
I did not sense its presence.
Had he miscalculated? Either Zanza had incorrectly judged how weak his imprisonment had made him, that he could not even sense the one coming for him, or...

Light filled the chamber as the door cracked open, rising up into a hidden alcove in the ceiling. Being what he was, Zanza's eyes did not need much time to adjust, and it didn't take him long to realize something was terribly wrong with what he saw. Three silhouettes stood against the backdrop of blue sky, blocking out some of the light.

And the presence of wings on each of their backs told Zanza that this was not who he was expecting.

"If we hadn't read those reports we recovered, I'd never have believed it," said the one on the left. "Father, what
is
he?"

"Calm yourself, Zel," said the man in the middle. "Our host seems like the talkative type."

"...Who are you?" was the only question Zanza could muster, and he mentally berated himself for looking like a fool in front of these three High Entia upstarts.

The man in the middle, clearly the one in charge, bowed before him. "How rude of me. My name is Don Argentis, and these are my two daughters: Zel--" he gestured to the one who had spoke before, "--and En. You have me at a disadvantage."

Zanza ignored the unspoken request for an introduction and remained guarded. "Why have you come here?"

The man called Don Argentis began to pace back and forth. "We have reason to believe that you've been here for quite some time. Would you say this is accurate?"

"Beings that look as I do are not commonplace in your era. What do you think?"

"Of course, of course. And are you on familiar terms with His Majesty?"

Zanza shrugged. He honestly had no idea how many Emperors and Empresses had come and gone since his imprisonment had begun. "I very much doubt that," he replied.

"Then might I inquire--"

"Zel, watch out!" cried En, the other girl.

Zel, who had wandered toward Zanza, jumped back in alarm.

Zanza, though powerless to do anything to the curious girl, got at least a measure of small satisfaction out of this.

"Zel, your sister is quite correct to be cautious. As I was saying, might you tell me why I've been able to obtain a document detailing His Majesty's plan to visit this island and release the being held here? Why might he do that?"

"Perhaps you should ask him."

"I think not," rebuked Don Argentis. "I don't think he'd be able to tell me, and even worse, it might tip off whomever is manipulating him into this. Who is helping you? The Bionite Order?"

Indulging this buffoon would do little to further his own ends, Zanza decided, and remained silent.

"En thought it would come to this," said Don, acknowledging the more pragmatic of the two girls with him. "But I had to be sure. At any rate, this was most enriching, being able to experience a little piece of our history, long since forgotten by most.

"May we never repeat it."

"Who exactly are you?" implored Zanza, suddenly not sure of his situation.

Don stopped pacing and stared directly at Zanza, a trace of emotion appearing on the High Entia’s face for the first time since he’d arrived. "Someone with the interests of the High Entia in his heart. Someone who has pledged to do whatever is necessary to purge all threats to our people and our land. My family has sworn allegiance to the throne, and we act in its stead when it cannot.”

His friendly demeanor returned. "And together with our little R&D branch, we've figured out exactly what to do with you. But I'd have been remiss if I did not at least to attempt to dredge up any of the conspirators that are attempting to fool the Emperor into thinking releasing you was somehow not completely ill-advised."

He snapped his fingers. "En, Zel: we've outstayed our welcome. Come along."

Zanza said nothing as the three figures walked away, the one called Zel looking over her shoulder as they left. The door did not close behind them, but the little ether energy available to him was not enough for Zanza to release himself from his shackles.

Then it hit him. The quantity of ether contained here was no accident: there was just enough to sustain his life force, but not enough to allow him to regain sufficient strength to break free. If the High Entia scientists had found a way to tinker with the flow of ether...

Hours passed while Zanza contemplated the chance that he had simply called Argentis' bluff, and gradually he drifted off to sleep.

He never woke up.

~High Entia Tomb~

1 week later

Melia Antiqua, chosen successor to the High Entia throne, made her way throughout the halls of the ancient tomb turned training ground, hoping that she was gradually progressing to the central chamber and not simply moving in circles.

Adorned with her ceremonial mask, Melia was not in a great position to detect threats coming from any direction save directly in front of her, and while she had the utmost respect for the ancient traditions of her people, she had to marvel at the utter lack of practicality surrounding this whole ordeal.

Conjuring wards of earth, wind, and ice, her strongest defensive tools, Melia did her best to avoid confrontation where she could, but as she had already disturbed no less than five ancient machinations, probably viable defenders at the time of installation but, due to lack of maintenance, easily dispatchable by the diminutive sorceress.

Utterly pointless,
she decided. Nothing in here could possibly graze her, and though the rite of ascension in the past had been a sort of proving ground, it struck Melia that she hadn’t exactly proven anything past her ability to navigate windy passages and endure hours of tedium. Yet what could she do? The stuffy advisors who had mandated this pointless trip would be her own cabinet someday, and she’d need them on her side. If that meant indulging a few outdated traditions, then she’d grin and bear it, as her ancestors must have.

After several hours, halls, and stairways, Melia reached the central chamber, where her prize, a ceremonial scepter, was fabled to dwell. Instead, she saw a single High Entia girl, crouched in the center, a mask adorning her face as well.

“You’ve arrived,” the girl spoke, not looking up. “I was beginning to think you would not be up to the challenge.”

Indignation won out over curiosity. “Of what challenge do you speak?” Melia retorted, fighting to keep her tone even. “Those golems? They seemed to fall over without very much influence on my part.”

“True enough,” conceded the other girl, who rose up from her stance. While Melia could not see her face, the empress-to-be could sense the hostility radiating toward her.

At full height, the stranger was a bit taller than Melia, but the wings made Melia seem even more insignificant in stature. Being half Homs, Melia possessed significantly smaller wings than full blooded High Entia. “You obviously know who I am. Who are you? For what reason have you waited here for me?”

“Of course I know you,” the other girl spat. “I’ve lived in your shadow my entire life. You, the half breed with the silver spoon, enjoy a life of luxury while I, a full blooded High Entia, am forced to stay in the shadows, an embodiment of someone’s inconvenient truth.”

Melia had no idea what this person meant, but she was starting to understand the girl’s less than noble intentions toward her. This couldn’t possibly be part of the test -- was she tasked with killing this stranger in cold blood? Melia would not,
could
not bring herself to make the first move. Her defensive wards, for the time being, would remain. “What happens now?” Melia ventured, hoping cooler heads might prevail.

The mysterious girl removed her mask.“My name is Tyrea. As you might have guessed, I’ve been sent here to kill you -- an act I normally would have neither moral or personal objection to carrying out.”

The use of the word
normally
was not lost on Melia, as she followed suit and removed the ridiculous ceremonial mask that adorned her own face.

“But,” continued Tyrea, “My orders did not come through the normal channels. The timing is also suspicious; I know of an incident at Prison Island that took place not more than a week ago. The word came through that same day, and here we are.”

Melia thought for a moment, back to a detail she hadn’t considered significant at the time. “Originally, this ceremony was not to take place for a few months. The timetable was moved up, just this past week as you say, but I was never told why.”

Tyrea nodded. “So there it is. The balance of power has shifted, and I’m not entirely sure your death is in the best interests of the High Entia.”

Melia stepped back as if stung. “What in the blazes is that supposed to mean?”

Tyrea paused to dust herself off. “It means that I do not trust those who might fill the void created by your untimely disappearance,” she commented idly, looking away.

The princess folded her arms in annoyance.

“Fine.” The would-be assassin stepped forward, apparently realizing her redirection had failed. “Our people are becoming weak, our blood is being diluted, and the royal family is willing to put a Homs girl acting above her station on the throne? Our ancestors would roll over in their graves.”

“My father says--”

“Your father be
damned!
Tyrea shouted. “He’s too busy coddling you to realize the usurpers are already in our midst! I have half a mind to--”

A thud sounded in the distance. “Did you--” Melia started.

“I heard it,” Tyrea agreed. “You dismantled all the sentries on your way here, you said?”

Melia nodded. “I was quite thorough. There wasn’t much else to do.”

“Then it’s something else. Let’s go.”

Deciding Tyrea had truthfully abandoned any notion of fulfilling her duty, Melia followed after the other girl out of the room, up a flight of stairs, and along several hallways. “It’s getting louder over here,” said Tyrea, pointing to the end of the hallway, which snaked away from the general direction of the now repeating pounding.

Melia waved her staff, banging it on the stones in several places, and eventually stopped on a particular section of wall. “This wall -- it’s false.” She released her wind ward, which exploded out from her, blasting away the facade of stone that had turned the T junction into an L. Melia took Tyrea’s lack of reply as either a grudging appreciation or annoyance at being shown up -- either one suited Melia.

It didn’t take long for the room to open up, yet again. The tomb was full of large burial chambers for the more respected members of ancient royal families, and most of these rooms were nothing more than testaments to wasted space. It was the sides of the rooms usually housing the burial plots, while the remainder simply existed to emphasize the opulence of the place. But instead of an empty room, such as the one Melia had met Tyrea in, this room had a contraption at its center.

And operating the device was none other than a giant Mechon.

Melia charged up an electric orb to replace the wind orb she’d dissolved. “Mechon!” she shouted, but Tyrea was already in motion. She charged the machine, a blade materializing in her left hand.

The mechon didn’t even look up from its work as it swatted her away, seemingly without effort.

Melia let her earth ward go, a blast of corrosive acid jetting toward the mechon. It contacted, but the target didn’t look much worse for the wear. Then it turned toward her, and Melia saw its face. “Well!” said a deep, throaty growl, not the automated tones of a machine, but with the inflections of a sentient being. “Can’t say I’ve seen that one before.”

“You...can talk?” Melia could not hide her astonishment. Tyrea could only groan, sprawled out on the floor nearby.

“I daresay I’ve gotten quite good at it,” came the cheerful reply. “But what’s this here? I knew I should’ve spent more time on that damn wall.”

“I demand to know what you’re doing on the sacred grounds of my people!” ordered Melia, with all the bravado she could muster.

The mechon waved one of its bulky arms toward the contraption. “Just tuning this piece of scrap here to do what it’s supposed to do.”

“And that is?”

“Just to take me and a couple friends for a short trip, see some interesting new places, that kind of thing.”

“They’re...attacking...the...city,” Tyrea forced out from her prone position, “Teleporting...bypassing the...barrier.”

Melia sent the ice ward toward the mechon, bringing a fire ward up in its place. Did the mechon have a hand in luring her here? If they really were planning an attack, it didn’t make any sense to risk their cover being blown. And Tyrea seemed just as surprised as Melia to see them here.

“You’re beginning to annoy me, girl,” warned the mechon. “But yeah, what she said. The rest shouldn’t be long now. As for you--” the mechon extended its arm, and a blade appeared. “I’m willing to divert my attention for a bit!”

The mechon leapt toward Melia with agility that caught the sorceress off guard, but its trajectory was altered almost instantaneously, as Tyrea had somehow recovered, throwing herself into the machine. The attacking mechon landed in a heap to Melia’s side, and she quickly ran over to Tyrea, who was again hunched over in pain. “Can you stand?”

Tyrea waved her away. “I don’t need your pity!”

The mechon wasted no time righting itself, and Melia unleashed a bolt of electricity at it, immediately replacing the orb. This one seemed to hit home, and the mechon reeled back. “Got some fight in you. I’ll spare you the embarrassment and just end this now, before you get any ideas about how this might turn out.” The mechon’s chest opened, where Melia could see the core sparking with energy. The taunting had been a mere distraction, and there was no way she’d be able to dodge an energy weapon in time.

A blur moved across her field of vision, and before Melia could react, the mechon discharged a blast of ether, which careened into a leaping Tyrea, who had jumped in front of Melia at the last possible moment.

The assassin turned savior lay still, chest barely rising and falling. Melia, despite the looming threat across the room, ran to her.

“Why?” was all she thought to say.

“Fool... Get...out. Use the...” the girl went limp.

Melia, a now a torrent of conflicting emotions, dared to look up. The blast from the mechon had damaged it, somehow. The sorceress could see cracks where the earlier acid attack had exposed sensitive circuitry, which, in conjunction with the emission of ether, was causing the mechon to overload.

“Threw one by me, girl,” the mechon almost seemed congratulatory. “Won’t change anything. More will come after you and I are gone. It’s been fun.”

With that, the core in its chest began to pulsate again, more brightly, and Melia knew it would be only seconds before it detonated. With no other option, Melia ran to the center console. The faced mechon hadn’t appeared to have finished the calibration job it had been attempting. If luck were on their side, the explosion might render the machine unusable.

She’d have to get out before that happened, and the empress-to-be was determined to not let Tyrea, who had just given her life for someone she hated, sacrifice herself in vain.

Melia jammed the button down and let the currents of ether take her.

This is worth re-mentioning, just so it's ingrained into everyone's head:

BorkJerfkin wrote:scene/kill flavor is
NOT RELEVANT TO THE GAME.
Every kill, lynch or otherwise, will be the scene of at least one character death (or a more mundane scene, if a day/night transition occurs with no deaths.) The only characters mentioned in the scene will be either the character being killed, previously killed characters, or irrelevant/minor/original characters.

~Satorl Marsh~

1 week later

It wasn’t so much that he
wanted
this whole Heropon gig as much as that he was hopelessly in debt to around half of Makna Village.

So it was on the premise that he be paid a hefty chunk of coin that Riki found himself on the southwest side of Satorl marsh, tracking the dinobeast that not only terrorized the treetop transit system in Makna Forest, but was currently heading for the Nopon Camp just a few marks north.

It wasn’t easy traveling. Riki had to haul himself through not only the entirety of the forest, but also into the nasty recesses of the Bionis itself before coming out into the marsh.

Riki liked the humidity of the forest, but this was too much for even a nopon to be comfortable. He hoped this was worth it -- maybe the dinobeast had a hoard somewhere, like a dragon? He could take it out, plunder its riches,
and
get paid in one fell swoop.

This continued for another hour or so, but eventually, Riki reached a clearing, over which the beast was circling.

And he was just about to charge in, flail at the ready, when an errant blast nearly singed his fur.

“Yowie!” he exclaimed to no one in particular. “Riki just had tan last week!”

Riki stopped. The beast was still firing, but not at him -- it was pure bad luck that he’d almost just bought it.

He quickly regained his bearings and dived behind a small mogul, over which he peered into the clearing, and was surprised at what he saw.

A metallic monster, now clearly the target of the dinobeast’s wrath, faced off against it, trying to slash it when it came near.
Why metal beast fight dinobeast?
He wondered, but there was no way he was going over there to find out.

The dinobeast, like so many of the forest’s aerial denizens, couldn’t take its target in a straight fight. Riki had hunted many sorts of fowl over the years, and the challenge had always been catching them rather than beating them into submission once he had.

The mechon was having similar problems, and was slowly losing ground. A few hits had destabilized it, and it dropped to one knee after flailing about for a few seconds. The telethia, as the Homs called it, moved in for the kill.

It never knew what hit it until it was too late. The mechon suddenly lashed out with its claw, raking the telethia across the midsection. The beast went flying into a nearby cliff face and lay still.

The mechon hadn’t fared much better. Dinobeasts could fell a group of Nopon with a single burst of energy. Riki had seen the mechon pelted with no fewer than five. Riki hunkered back down and waited.

When the noise had died down, he looked up again, just in time to see the mechon lose its fight with gravity, and tumble off the side of the hill. It rolled down like a large boulder, and at the base of the mountain the earth gave way, revealing a hidden cave.

Riki waited another quarter-hour before he moved in -- he hadn’t survived this long by being rash or foolish. After he was at least moderately satisfied that the mechon wasn’t going anywhere, he crept up to the entrance to the now revealed nook, and peered inside.

The mechon was in shambles; mechanical debris littered the area, and Riki couldn’t see any signs of power on its body. This was good -- he’d be able to salvage it for parts, adding to his haul for this escapade.

But what he saw a few feet beyond floored him. He hadn’t been serious when he compared the the telethia to a dragon protecting its hoard, but either accidentally or purposefully, the beast had been drawn here, to what was contained inside.

And before him protruded more ether deposits and veins than he’d ever seen in his life.

Riki dropped his mace, protection no longer the first thing on his mind, and simply sat down, savoring the scene before him.

He knew he was no
Heropon.
Not like the ones from legend, anyway. He was just a poor sap who the chief had found a convenient way to get rid of for a while.

Oh, how that would change, he thought, and Riki couldn’t help the grin that fought its way onto his face. It was very often better to be lucky than good.

He got back to his feet. It was time to go find out who to talk to about buying Satorl Marsh.

~Tephra Cave~
During the events of the previous scene

Ok, so he was lost.

It’s not like it was the first time this had happened. Juju, having precious little else to do in the way of obligations due to his age, or recreation due to the times they lived in, he had to find ways to keep himself occupied.

And sneaking out of Colony 6 at night proved to be just the perfect diversion for him.

This wasn’t his first rodeo, either, and Juju had mapped out what he thought to be at least the northwest corner of the Bionis’ Leg. He didn’t dare go further South -- stronger monsters lived down there, and even he wasn’t stupid enough to head into Satorl Marsh.

So when he discovered the cave entrance, yet untouched by anyone in the colony as far as he knew, he jumped at the chance to delve into uncharted territory. So far, he’d mapped out 3 dead ends, a loop, and a steep decline. Jotting the information down, he’d dropped his multitool when he was reminded exactly what ‘steep decline’ meant.

Juju tumbled down into a mini ravine, landing squarely on his rump. He was uninjured except for some soreness, but there was no way he could make it back up the way he’d came. Worse yet, his multitool was nowhere to be found.

Rookie mistake,
he chided himself. A professional explorer would have retreated to safer ground before he recorded his findings. He still had a lot to learn.

Juju picked himself up and started off in the only viable route open to him -- down the windy passage away from the cliff, and more importantly, away from the cave entrance. Apprehension began to eat away at him -- Juju knew there was no guarantee that the way out would even be accessible to him anymore.

The general ambiance began to change. The cavern took on a more lifelike appearance, and Juju could, in the limited light, see scurrying shadows along the walls. This was, he knew, both good and bad. The surroundings could sustain life, which means the surface was probably accessible. Whether or not that life might consider him
food
was another issue entirely.

As if on queue, the cavern opened up ahead of him, and a lump formed in his throat. He still could barely see -- there wasn’t much opportunity for natural light to penetrate this deep, but he could see egg sacs adorning the ground, walls, and probably the ceiling too.

He didn’t have a choice -- Juju paused to compose himself, and then tiptoed along the outer wall, hoping to the Bionis that whatever called this place its home was taking an extended beauty sleep.

He’d about made it -- almost perfectly opposite the tunnel he’d entered was one leaving in the opposite direction, and he negotiated a path along the outside without incident. He turned his head over his shoulder to ensure he wasn’t being followed, and promptly ran full onto something hard that he could’ve sworn hadn’t been there a second earlier.

“Oy, what the hell you doing here, kid?!”

Juju looked up. It was, to his relief, another Homs, or so he appeared. But this was one of the tallest, bulkiest men he’d ever seen.

“I’m sorry!” he whispered harshly -- what the hell was this guy shouting in here for? “I got lost and I’m trying to--”

A hissing sound had exploded behind him. Juju turned in horror; the floor was crawling with life now, the stranger surely having disturbed whatever lived there.

“Uh, “ said the hulk of a man, not altogether realizing the danger they were now in. “That’s bad then?”

Moron.
thought Juju, reflexively. “Maybe we should--”

Juju’d voice trailed off as his eyes moved toward the ceiling, where two distinctively arachnid eyes stared back at him. He began to back away, when he looked down. Spiders were streaming on the ground from behind him toward the cavern. He stopped -- sticking with this oaf might be his best shot.

The man turned toward Juju. “Where you off to? These small fry shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll just squash a few and then we can get on out of here. Won’t even break a sweat. Just yesterday we were...”

The boasting continued as Juju watched on in horror. The giant spider was beginning to descend upon them.

“and I just picked the krabble up and
tossed
it on its--

“Look out” Juju interrupted him, pushing the muscular man out of the way. The spider’s claw raked Juju’s arm in the process, opening a significant gash.

To his credit, the other man’s instincts seemed to take over. He drew his weapon -- some sort of sword and shield hybrid -- and sprung into action -- taking a quick look at Juju as he did. “You all right, kid?”

Juju just nodded.

The other man seemed satisfied. “Reyn time, baby.”

Fortunately, Juju quickly found that what this ‘Reyn’ lacked in brains, he certainly made up for in brawn and, more importantly, skill. The soldier -- for what else could he have been? -- not only struck the spider with vigor, but also masterfully parried claw and fang to avoid taking many hits himself. Man and spider traded blows for a few minutes, until Juju saw Reyn get nicked in the face by the spider’s fang as it bit.

The slice merely served to piss the man off, and Reyn slammed the full blunt edge of the driver into the beast’s face as it drew back, stunning it. “Gotcha!” he yelled, and brought the sharp edge of it across the spider’s midsection as it reared up in anger. Foul smelling guts leaked out, and Juju knew that if the thing was capable of expressing disbelief, it would be that exact emotion he’d be seeing on its face right now as the life slowly drained out of it. It collapsed to the floor, dead. “Wasn’t so bad!” Reyn exclaimed, and Juju had to admit he was impressed.

As the adrenaline left him, Juju realized a throbbing in his left arm, increasing in intensity by the minute. Venom, he knew.

Reyn apparently saw it too, and seemed to deflate a bit. “That thing got you, didn’t it?” He knelt down beside Juju, rustling the boy’s hair a bit. “Thanks kid, for what you did back there. You’ve definitely got a pair on you.”

“We need to... get back to the colony,” Juju insisted, fighting to maintain conversational volume. He stared off in the direction he’d initially been trying to go. The scurrying had died down, the spiders no doubt realizing the two men were a threat to them.

He didn’t make it more than fifteen feet or so in that direction when his leg gave. The good news, at least, was that the pain was receding. In fact, this seemed as good a spot as any to have a quick nap.

Strong arms lifted him up. “No you don’t. Hang in there, buddy.”

The world swirled around him and he quickly lost consciousness.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juju opened his eyes and stared at pure white. Thoughts returning to them, he blinked and quickly sat up.

Was he dead? He looked at his arm -- he could still see where the claw had raked him, but the wound had been dressed and cared for. He looked around the room and saw Reyn lying on a bed next to his, bandages adorning his face.
Not dead, then
, Juju decided, for no other reason that no god would be as cruel as to force Juju to spend eternity with this musclehead recounting stories of krabble flipping. On the other side, a petite girl he did not recognize was sleeping.

“You’ve awoken, as I had hoped. I am glad my efforts were not in vain.” came a soothing male voice from behind him. Juju spun around and wonder overtook him.

Another homs stood before him this one short and slender, with long, light hair, and although the man’s physique could not have been further from Reyn’s, the man seemed to inspire just as much awe.

“Do not be alarmed,” said the newcomer. “You are in no danger.”

Juju had figured as much by the treatment of his spider wound, but hearing it from the source reassured him all the same. “Um, thank you, mister...?”

“Alvis will do.” The man said. “And your friend will survive too, before you ask.”

Juju didn’t even think to dispute the use of the term friend at this point, a fact that initially shocked him, but the two had known each other for mere minutes and had already saved each other’s skins.

He simply nodded. “Where on Bionis are we?”

“I’m afraid that question lacks a certain grasp of the situation, but regretfully, we will have an overabundance of time in which to explain it.”

Juju didn’t like the sound of that, but remained silent. Next to him, he heard a groan. Reyn was beginning to come around.

“This ancient place is my home,” said Alvis. “Your friend here called out for help, and that message traveled across the bounds of time and space to reach me here. I instinctively pulled you away from the Bionis so I could treat your wounds.”

The boy did a double take. “Away from the Bionis?”

Alvis nodded. “We currently reside on the only existing relic of a forgotten age, before the dawn of your universe.”

Overwhelmed, Juju crashed back onto his cot. Outside the windowed room, a vast expanse of nothingness loomed. He could sense the truth of Alvis’ words: he’d never felt so far away from home when he stared into the vast expanse of...whatever it was out there.

The obvious question came to him. “Why?”

“Why you? Fate has decreed that your role in this world has not yet come to a close. Some battles must yet be fought.”

Juju suspected there was quite a bit more to it than that, but he’d had enough world shattering revelations for one day. Alvis didn’t seem the type of volunteer any more -- or less -- information than was absolutely necessary concerning the current situation.

“What happens now? Can I go home?”

Juju was surprised when Alvis’ expression softened significantly. “I’m afraid I cannot send you back now. The energy reserves of this ship have been expended, and I am currently unable to breach the veil that separates this ship from the place you call home. I do not know when they will be available again.

“For the foreseeable future, I’m afraid we’re all stuck here.”

~Colony 9 Outskirts~
Some time later

Finally.

Mumkhar, for the most part, hadn’t had a problem with his newfound “allies” since they’d been gracious enough to spare his life as he’d fled the disaster that had been the Battle at Sword Valley.. But they were so maddeningly
patient.

This was a problem for Mumkhar. Patience usually required restraint. Mumkhar wasn’t so good at restraint.

Luckily for him, the order came down, and a week early at that. Smart move on the mechons’ part -- he’d been close to killing some of the grunts for sport to relieve the tedium.

Then again, the sort of army that would give a man like him an indestructible battle machine really deserved whatever they got, didn’t they?

Mumkhar read the script, specially tailored for the sentient minds in the army; the purely mechanical minions didn’t require visual or auditory stimulation to receive orders. They would be moving out at dawn.

And he would be leading the charge.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mumkhar slept well, a rarity for him these days.

Most mechon did not require sleep -- only the ones powered by Homs like himself did. So he was not surprised when they were all waiting for him.

“I’ll save you all the impassioned speech,” he growled. No backtalk. This was definitely nothing like being in a colony platoon. “We’re moving out.”

Mumkhar boarded the mechon he’d been given -- the Homs has supposedly taken to calling it “Metal Face,” which, while a bit boring, gave a life to the terror felt by his presence. They’d soon know that terror firsthand.

The non-combatants -- Mumkhar was surprised there
were
any mechon non-combatants -- were still finishing tearing down the encampment. Whichever way the battle went they would not be needing it anymore. Mumkhar waited for the more loaded for bear types to join him, and once he was satisfied with the the state of affairs he flew off.

A front gate assault on Colony 9. No tricks, no deceptions, no flanks. They would march in and simply kill anyone who got in their way.

Then they would kill everyone else.

He flew off toward the colony, which was only a short distance away. None of the back scouts had reported any interference from the other direction. He licked his lips. No one was coming to save them. He could already imagine the looks on their faces as he opened the cockpit and revealed the face of their destruction.

Mumkhar zipped around the last corner of the valley connecting Colony 9 when an explosion rocked the ground in front of him. He hadn’t expected the runts to even know they were being attacked, much less put up a struggle.

Well, tf they wanted to go down fighting, that was their choice. He ignited his thrusters and gained some altitude as he charged toward the entrance of the colony. Sure enough, the garrison was manned, the gates were sealed, and lines and lines of infantry were already emptying rounds toward his general direction.

“Not to worry,” he said aloud. “I’ll have the cannon fodder occupy them while I get up close.” He turned around, prepared to visually direct the army behind him to overtake his position.

Except there was no army.

“What?!” They’d just been there. Why would they have abandoned him? Mechons didn’t feel fear, and they certainly didn’t disobey orders.

The hesitance at this unexpected event threw him off balance enough to avoid noticing an artillery round careening toward his position. It rocked the ground close to Mumkhar, catching his right leg in the process. He struggled to balance himself, but was ultimately forced to drop to one knee.

The other mechon forces were nowhere to be found. Mumkhar whirled around with his claws, but the Homs had apparently realized the he couldn’t do much damage from long range.

The barrage of projectiles and explosives continued until his mechon was unresponsive. He knew he was done for -- they hadn’t managed to penetrate the cockpit, but it was only a matter of time. His visual displays barely worked, but he could see the Homs starting to move in on him, their confidence getting the best of them. He’d make them regret it.

“Bastards,” was all he could think to say. The colonists, the mechon, the hell with them all. Betrayed by the mechon; he hadn’t seen it coming and he had no idea why they’d done it. But if he’d been a more intellectual man, Mumkhar might have paused in the moment before he hit the self destruct button, to appreciate the irony of the events that led to this point.

~Colony 9~
During Mumkhar’s ill-fated attack

The road to recovery had been a long one for Dunban.

Ever since the battle of Sword Valley over a month ago, Dunban had to learn to cope with living with a single functional arm. It hadn’t been easy for him, but Dunban wasn’t the type of man to mope around.

Instead, he’d attempted to rehabilitate the best he could. He started physical therapy, and once the doctors were satisfied that he was able to function on his own, they allowed him to continue -- in a limited capacity -- his swordplay.

Dunban’s fighting style lent itself better than most to the handicap of a single arm. Not one to rely on his bulk like Reyn, or to supplement with his ether skills like some others he knew, Dunban instead relied on being faster than his enemy. And if anything, having one less arm to deal with simplified matters, once he got past the shift in balance he had to compensate for.

He stretched the one good arm as he rose from his chair in the house he shared with his sister, and walked outside. It was mid-autumn, but the weather was still holding up. He decided he’d go for a stroll. He hit the merchant district first, grabbing a biscuit from one of the vendors, and proceeded into the residential district.

No one was really around -- it was still early in the day, and a lot of the civilian population wasn’t awake yet. He thought he saw a flicker of movement by the side gate, but it was gone before he could discern what it was.

“Morning Dunban!”

“Desiree!” he greeted warmly, before remembering what had recently happened to her father, a man who had not been as lucky as Dunban during Sword Valley. His smile just barely faltered, but continued anyway. “It’s been too long. How have you been getting along lately?”

“Oh, keeping busy. I’ve been thinking of joining the army.”

Dunban didn’t know what to say to that. He tried the diplomatic approach. “Desiree, are you sure?”

She waved him off. “Oh, you know Dad wouldn’t have expected anything else. Besides, we don’t get much business this time of year anyway.”

This time the smile was easier to maintain. “You’re as hard-headed as Xord was.”

“Oh, I’m much moreso, I assure you,” she giggled. “Do you remember that time I was training for the Ironman, and it must’ve been, what, three in the morning when your patrol spotted me in the park, and the look on their faces when they found out I was--”

An alarmingly loud
bang
sounded, not far off. Dunban whirled around. There was no doubt of the source.

“The main gate. Mechon.” Dunban spoke without thinking. “Desiree, get inside -- no, better yet -- make a pass through the residential district and get
them
inside, then get inside yourself.”

“What do you plan to do Dunban? Let me help!”

Dunban put his hand to his temple and shook his head. “You’re untrained, Desiree, and this isn’t going to involve any miles of swimming.”

“And you’re missing a bloody arm!”

“Yes, well, I don’t plan to use the Monado again, do I?” he snapped. Immediately he softened -- he didn’t want her running off in some sort of misguided defiance. “Desiree, please do this for me. Do it for your father; give yourself a fighting chance
when you’re ready,
and not before.”

She began to reply, but Dunban could see her heart wasn’t in it. “You always know how to get people to see things your way, don’t you?”

Dunban flashed a smile. “If I can get Reyn to admit he’s wrong, what chance did you think you had?”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Through some miracle Dunban didn’t want to jinx, whatever was happening outside of the city was staying there, and so Dunban raced home to grab his sword. He checked under the bed, it’s normal storage spot, when he remembered that he’d planned on training today when he left. Had he brought it with him?

He must have dropped it while talking to Desiree. Running back to the residential district, Dunban was relieved to see both that the sword had been propped up in plain sight, Desiree knowing Dunban would be looking for it, and Desiree herself nowhere to be found. This was good -- she was hopefully in her home, as safe as she was going to be for the moment.

Then he saw it: a flash of movement, on the eastern edge of the city, which was naturally protected by a cliff wall. That same silvery blur he’d seen before was moving briskly at a breakneck pace.

And it was moving
into
the city, toward the military district.

His course of action was clear. He followed at a distance. Whatever, or whoever this was seemed to be hovering along the ground, not terribly concerned about stealth, but instead with speed. Even so, there was no one here to stop it -- the entire force had been occupied with whatever was going on outside; the army would not be expecting an intruder at a time like this.

Dunban reached the top of the stairs to the military district just in time to see the figure duck into the weapon’s development lab. He frowned. There was only one thing being kept there right now, but...

He followed, breaking into a sprint. There was no way he was allowing the colony to lose the most advanced weapon against the mechon they ever had, even though he, nor anyone else they knew, was able to wield it on a long term basis.

Coming into the room where the Monado was stored, he could see the backside of an obviously female figure.

“Turn around,” Dunban ordered.

The woman complied, and Dunban knew that he’d failed to hide his shock. The woman was around his height, with silvery gray hair, but other than her face she barely resembled a homs at all. Her torso and abdomen were obviously mechanical in construction, and the daggers she carried in her sheaths were a design he’d never seen.

“Well?” he prompted.

“I’ve come for the Monado,” she replied in a timbre that chilled him. The voice was at least partially modified by machination, but there was definitely an intelligent inflection mixed in.

“That’s not something we’re willing to part with at the moment,” Dunban countered evenly.

“It is no longer of any use to you,” said the stranger.

“Oh, really?” Dunban asked.

The woman nodded. “Yes. Its progenitor is dead. There is no need to continue this fight.”
“What fight?” Dunban inquired, not sure where this was going.

“The war with the mechon, of course,” she replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Dunban drew his sword and slashed into the wall with one fluid motion. The woman did not move.

“There is no need, for
us
to continue this fight?! Against an enemy who attacked
us
with no provocation?!”

He gestured wildly with his sword. “Who are you with? Is this some naive peace movement? Do you have any idea what they’ve been doing to us?”

The woman waited for him to calm, and then nodded slowly. “Yes. And I am sorry.”

Dunban looked aghast at her. “You’re sorry? For what?”

She shook her head. “It would take too long to explain. I am Meyneth, and I have come here to destroy this wretched artifact.”

“You’ll do no such thing,” said Dunban, training his sword on her.

“Please, you must understand,” she implored. “I wish for this conflict to end. I have called off the main force.”

“You’re telling me that
you
control the mechon?”

Meyneth nodded again. “Yes, along with a few others. The mechon outside the city right now is among the strongest.”

Just one?
“And you sent it here?”

Meyneth waved her hand dismissively. “As I said, I have called off the main force. He is alone -- a distraction. I imagine your forces have taken care of him by now.”

Dunban’s eyes widened as he realized the true nature of what had just transpired. “You sent a patsy here so you could sneak in and destroy the Monado?”

She smiled in response.

“I won’t allow it,” he decided after an instant. Dunban didn’t know this woman’s game, but the Monado was non-negotiable.

“Your desires are immaterial. I have long awaited this day. You will not be harmed, and you will not hear from the mechon again.”

Not knowing what else to do, Dunban threw his weight into the mechanical woman. Taken off balance, the two dropped to the floor.

But instead of going for her, Dunban did the one thing he promised he’d never do again. He got to his feet, staggered over to the Monado, and grabbed it. Immediately he felt the pain course through his arm, just as it had the other arm back when he still had it. He could still control it.

Meyneth was on her feet. “You have wielded the Monado before.” It was not a question.

“Yes...” Dunban panted. “Sword Valley...I slew hundreds.”

“You will not need to slay another mechon again if you simply give me the sword!”

“...Never.” He advanced on her.

“Please!” She took a step back. “It must be destroyed if we’re ever to live together!”

Dunban laughed, which quickly degenerated into coughs. “Us and the mechon, together? Madness.”

“It has happened before! It can happen again!” Meyneth was against the wall now.

“No...I...see what this is really...about,” Dunban stammered. The sword was draining him by the second. “This is the only weapon...that can harm you...or your race.”

Meyneth closed her eyes, as if resigned. “If I die, I cannot guarantee the mechon will ever relent. Do you expect to keep fighting forever?”

With a final surge of strength, Dunban plunged the Monado into the woman’s chest. “No...I expect...you all to...die.”

Dunban dropped the sword, and slumped to the ground.

Meyneth grasped at her chest, but knew the damage had been done. The Monado, the only weapon that could truly destroy her, had done just that. But she was the only one that could have destroyed it, too.

She’d gambled, and she’d lost. Perhaps, in her absence, the mechon would triumph, and her people would be safe. Perhaps not. These homs were clearly too far gone for this conflict to end any other way than total destruction of one side or the other, and although she knew who was intiially to blame, it was her and her mechon that had escalated the conflict beyond repair.

In her final moments, she allowed herself the possibility that Zanza had the right idea with scrapping the whole damn thing.

~Alcamoth~
2 months later

Yumea awoke in a cold sweat.

It was the same dream again -- visions of what she now knew to be the Bionis, of dark caves and chasms, teeming with living things that most beings would nor could ever comprehend.

She, however, could. It was in her blood, as it was in the blood of all
pure
high entia. And Yumea knew, from the dreams that plagued her every night, that the prophecy spoke of by the Bionite Order would soon come to pass.

But she was powerless to do anything to prevent its fulfillment.

Yumea had been content, at first, to use the Order for one point of common ground -- that the Homs, Nopon, and the worst of all, half-bloods that played at the nobility and grace of true High Entia, were not welcome in the city. But she had gradually come to realize that the Order stood for something else, something much more sinister: the reversion of the High Entia to what she had eventually learned was their natural state.

As first consort to the emperor, Yumea was privy to the records kept by the royal family’s ancestors from centuries ago. She knew what the telethia were; how dead telethia rarely reverted to the form of the High Entia from which it had mutated.

Yumea, having been party to the Order’s ceremonies and rituals for a long time, had gradually been unknowingly coerced down the path to reversion. And when she opened her eyes this time, and the vision of a beating heart, deep within the Bionis, did not leave her mind, she knew that her time had finally come.

Her affairs were in order; she’d told no one about her untimely fate save what she had committed to the royal family archives. No doubt they would come looking for her when she did not show her face for a few days and would find out all they needed to know. If she were lucky, they would find a humane way to put her down.

Tyrea and Melia had been missing for quite some time, and while she did not shed any tears for the latter, she knew their fates were likely linked. She hoped against hope that Tyrea would return someday and know what had happened to her mother.

But most of all, Yumea vowed that she would not lose herself without putting up a fight. She was a High Entia -- the most intellectually and magically advanced society on Bionis. She would not allow herself to succumb to the base emotions that coursed through her veins, itching for release.

Yumea walked to the window, and gazed upon the empire which her people had built. That was it! She
could
protect them still; Not from themselves, for she was powerless to combat the genetic code so expertly woven into the essence of the High Entia.

But there were still enemies, that is,
external
enemies, to fight -- enemies that still could still destroy her people from without.

Yumea latched onto that emotion, the rage and hatred she felt for those that would dare attack the city she loved.

Her body shimmered as she let herself fall forward through the window. Had there been any spectators, they would have stared in awe as a giant birdlike creature emerged from her plummeting form.

The creature that had been Yumea soared through the air, away from the city. One thought implanted itself in its mind.

Mechonis, I come for you.

~Valak Mountains, near the border of Sword Valley~
Around the same time.

Fiora wrapped her arms around herself as best she could, although it provided precious little warmth in a place such as this.

It had all started the day that Fiora had volunteered to excavate one of the old Mechon wreckage sites on the outskirts of town. The majority of the scrap had been run-of-the-mill -- old power cells, rotors, gears, and other assorted machine parts. But Fiora had found something else: an intact memory core. That had been unheard of in their dealings with the Mechon, as their enemies had a built-in directive to self-destruct whenever it looked like the Homs had gained the upper hand on them. The military had scoured the entire battlefield after the Sword Valley and found nary a useful piece of information.

But when Fiora touched the core she’d found in the rubble, a tiny spark had passed into her hand. She’d handed off the core to the researchers, but they found what she knew they’d find at that point: nothing. Fiora had never told anyone that the contents of the memory core, and all the information they contained, had passed themselves off into
her.

Or maybe it had been a beacon that was passing information to her in real-time. Fiora did not know how mechon physiology (or for that matter, psychology), worked. But that night, she had found herself in a dream unlike she had ever experienced. In the dream was a mechanical woman; Fiora could never quite remember if she
was
the woman in the dream, talked to her directly, or was simply a third-party observer. The name of the woman, however, she remembered quite well.

Meyneth.

Meyneth was someone important to the mechon, Fiora knew, but not quite a mechon herself. She had a face recognizable, even dare she say beautiful, to a homs, but a mechanical suit that either obscured the rest of her features, or a body that was simply mechanical in origin.

Meyneth had been on a journey. Fiora did not recognize the places the woman had traveled, at first, but over the nights the cold metal of the landscape gave way to ice, snow, and eventually foliage. Dunban had told her of the places he’d visited in his last tour of duty, and Fiora knew that Meyneth had crossed over from the Mechonis to the Bionis. The question, Fiora wondered, was why?

Fiora could not talk to Meyneth in her dreams, but over time, she began to feel that she knew more and more about the mysterious woman. Meyneth’s own thoughts began to come clear to Fiora. She was looking for something; something very dangerous to her people, and she wanted to eliminate it. Meyneth passed through High Entia, Nopon, and Homs lands, but never lifted a finger to harm any being she came across.

This was not at all what she had come to expect from the race she’d grown up believing wanted nothing other than the complete genocide of her people.

Then one night, two months ago, Fiora finally recognized the surroundings firsthand. Meyneth had come to Colony 9. Fiora had been asleep when the giant mechon had attacked the front gate, and was summarily put down. But something else had happened that day too, and it was this incident that Fiora watched helplessly, in horror, as Meyneth had stormed into the Weapons Development Lab and attempted to destroy the Monado.

Fiora was numbed and saddened, but not at all surprised, when she had been taken to the lab after she had woken up and saw both her brother and the mysterious woman from her dreams slumped over.

Of course, nobody knew that Fiora had any idea who Meyneth was; they’d simply brought her in as next Dunban’s next of kin. Dunban was not dead, but his use of the Monado, which he had been explicitly warned never to hold in his hand again, had put him into a coma. He had not yet awoken.

The dreams had, of course, stopped after that. Fiora, more alone than she had ever felt, had been left to ponder just exactly what Meyneth had been trying to do.

A month later, Fiora had departed Colony 9 without a word.

Now she stood, on the precipice between two lands, the Bionis and Mechonis, wishing Dunban had been here to talk some sense into her. She wasn’t suited to these temperatures, and there were monsters around that could cleave her in two without a second thought.

But her days on the road had only served to strengthen her resolve. She did not forget about Meyneth; on the contrary, Fiora felt she understood more about her with each passing day, as if layers of information were continually being unlocked to her.

People were suffering on Mechonis as well; the mechon assault on Bionis was leaving casualties in its wake even on Mechonis. Meyneth, no doubt, wanted that to end, but the mechon seemed to be in no position even close to losing the war. Why did Meyneth, whose actions seemed borne out of desperation, risk so much to destroy the Monado?

Fiora hoped these answers could be found on Mechonis. She had left a note for Dunban, explaining where she’d gone. She hoped he’d get it, and forgive her for what probably seemed to anyone else as the actions of a madwoman.

She didn’t care. Fiora had to admit that, somehow, she trusted Meyneth, even having never spoken to her face to face, and this cause was too important to ignore.

She steeled herself, marched forward into the less than welcoming arms of the Mechonis and hoped to the heavens that mechon had a penchant for warmer weather.

In post 3803, waynegg wrote:I usually don't get so screwed up on WIFOM, but I had to step out of the box and take a look from a different angle here. Removing those considered conf town from the alive list, I looked at it from the perspective of what is to be gained, information wise, from any lynch if the player is town or scum.

10. Ser Arthur Dayne- nothing
12. Metal Sonic- nothing, he's done nothing but tunnel TD all game
17. Nachomamma8- loads either way
18. TiphaineDeath- nothing, he's done nothing but tunnel MS all game

Retreading back over all that from last night, Nacho did crumb red scum. His reply to me about that was hand face, which I think was more to himself than anyone else. Also, after I pointed the slip out, his whole tone changed from attacker to consolatory. So, right or wrong

~Hidden Machina Village~
Four days later.

Linada frantically searched through the town walls, industrial machinery, houses, hell, anything she could get her hands on.

Since the sentry bots had found the first bomb almost six hours ago, Linada and a team of others had been working around the clock to comb the entire town for more. So far, no one had taken responsibility for the act.

An isolated attack on the lakeside wouldn’t have made any sense, they surmised, and it didn’t take the machina long to mobilize. Their fears were confirmed later when the second device turned up -- this one planted on the roof of her own clinic.

Hers were a hardy people. There was no widespread panic, no mass evacuation. Those non-fit for bomb disposal were safely relocated to the beach, away from patrolling mechon, and those, like herself, who could do even a little to protect the town, remained.

Linada herself hadn’t found anything so far. She was a doctor by trade, not a mechanic (although to the Homs they probably appeared to be one in the same) and she didn’t truly have any more than the impromptu briefing some hours earlier, which she was already beginning to have a hard time remembering.

A siren sounded somewhat close to her, and Linada knew, having heard that sound off and on since the day began, that another one had been found.

Without thinking, she ran. Not away from the area, as any sane person would, but toward it.

There was no need for hesitation. Their home, once a part of Mechonis but cut free eons ago by the Bionis itself, was the only place in this tumultuous world mostly free from the ongoing strife between the two titans. They would all sooner die than see that home taken from them, turning them into refugees once more.

She reached the source of the siren, emitted by a sentry bot shining its tracer on what it had found. This one was near the generator, and the bot was shining the light on the convex part of the metal casing; the bomb had probably been planted on its underside.

The sentry bots couldn’t do anything by themselves -- they possessed barely a rudimentary intelligence usually used to identify wayward mechon wandering in vicinity of the village so that patrols could dispose of them. The mechanics had reprogrammed some to detect explosives, but no one had the means, much less the
time,
to get them to do anything else.

Linada climbed the fence keeping the general public at bay, and immediately got to her knees. The devices had no attention grabbing features, likely by design, but so far they had all been black boxes, attached with a simple adhesive to various surfaces. This one, in such an obvious location, must have been missed the first time through.

Linada grabbed her multitool from her belt as she positioned herself underneath the generator stack. The casings, more for camouflage than anything else, were easily pried off, but once inside.

Her panic turned to despair as she examined the inside. There was a sequence of wires she could remove, but she needed to use her multitool to supply a certain amount of current to the circuit while she did, otherwise the bomb could detonate. It was difficult even in good light, but she could barely see anything. She rolled onto her side and looked for the sentry bot.

It was nowhere to be found. The damn thing must’ve gone off searching for more, confident that the problem was dealt with. She cursed to herself -- she could have used the light.

She jacked up the light on her multitool to full, knowing it would drain power quickly, and began to work, rattling off the wire combinations in her head. Linada had performed plenty of surgeries over her tenure, but she was still out of her element and under an unspecified time constraint, to boot.

She continued like this for what had to have been an hour, she thought, when the device started to emit a soft hum. Linada didn’t know for sure what that meant, but she was damn well positive it wasn’t good.
Just a few more...

Her multitool flickered. She jammed it against the side of the generator and it came back on. She was almost through, but--

She hit the button to apply an electrical charge. Nothing. The damn thing had spent so much of its power acting as a flashlight that it didn’t have enough left to supply any power to defusing the bomb. She threw it on the ground, and rolled on her side again. Still no one around. The humming began to become more intense.

Her nerves began to spasm in anxiety, and she knew that she’d failed -- the device was going to go off any second. Not knowing what else to do, she pulled on the box with all of her might, and was able to pry it away from the generator column. Not knowing where else to go -- she ran to the only place she could think, the village wall, and threw the device over.

That wouldn’t be enough -- she was still in proximity to the power plant, and so she climbed up the rather precarious, but not unscalable from the inside, wall.

Reaching the top, she looked down, and was so surprised by what she saw that she lost her footing, toppling over the other side. She came down hard on her knee right next to the thrown bomb, which was now vibrating almost uncontrollably, and both felt and heard the leg break. Through the pain, she forced herself to make eye contact with what stood between her and the gated village.

Around 15 mechon -- she’d never seen so many in one place -- lay waiting, and it was immediately obvious to her what they’d been waiting for. As her entrance had been less than graceful, it did not surprise her that all of their weapons were trained on her.

Soon they’d have a wide open back route into town, newly created by the generator’s explosion as the bomb attached to it went--

Linada did a double take. The bomb, now almost ear splittingly loud, still sat on the ground next to her. Grabbing it, she threw it with all her might toward her aggressors as the mechons’ guns tore into her.

Her countrymen had to experience the satisfaction meant for her as they discovered her handiwork mere minutes later.

~Colony 6~

Official Report Regarding Status of Gamma Squad, Colony 6 Militia
March 7th, 455 SAE

Attn: XO

Delta Squad has successfully performed reconnaissance of incident area. It is with a heavy heart that we report that there were no survivors of an aggressive response by what has determined to be a trio of rogue telethia.

Casualties are accounted for, although additional verification may be needed in extreme cases. Sgt. Morrison’s body was identified.

Advising assignment of additional medical personnel with expectation of heavy casualties.

Albert Spelding,
CO Delta Squad

-------------------------------------------------------

The second in command of the Colony 6 militia let the letter fall to the desk.

He’d had enough.

-------------------------------------------------------

~Valak Mountains~
Three weeks later

Lorithia’s telethia soared through the snow covered caps with rampant disregard for her surroundings.

Although she thought herself well-suited to the subtleties that went along with infiltrating the High Entia Royal Court, Lorithia had been so shocked to learn of Zanza’s apparent demise that she’d almost failed to realize that she’d been made. Someone had tipped off that damnable Argentis and his two fanatical daughters to her true purpose, and she’d been forced to get out of town. She’d summoned her telethia just in time to see the Royal Guard magically rip the door off its hinges, and flown away to the northwest, eager to put as much distance between herself and High Entia lands as she could.

The duplicitous diplomat cursed herself for being unable to sabotage the experiments that the science wing had been conducting to suppress the latent ether around prison island, but she was soon forced to accept the truth: Lorithia wasn’t nearly as good a spy as she thought she was. Argentis had probably had her under surveillance for months, and she’d been deliberately cut out of the Prison Island project because she couldn’t be trusted.

Zanza could never truly be killed, of course; not without the Monado, which Lorithia was confident beyond a reasonable doubt that the High Entia still did not possess. Still, this had been a major setback, and she doubted the current wielder would even be compelled to visit Prison Island at all without the subtle guidance provided by Zanza and those loyal to him.

So Lorithia had fled to the mountains, the site that the Monado had been found by the Homs a few years ago. Zanza
must
have had a backup plan; maybe a way to accelerate his return, a way for her to gain more power personally, or a way to create another vessel...

She’d found nothing here, so far, either.“Damn it all!” she yelled across the vast, icy chasm, which responded in her own voice seconds later. The telethia she rode, her only companion, simply blinked.

None of the Nopon merchants, with their ears constantly to the ground about all things rare and valuable, knew of anything else in the region besides the Monado excavation site. It was there she was headed, in the hopes that perhaps a clue would make itself known in her presence.

It was a rather calm day for as high up as they were; her mount had been having little trouble negotiating a route, and Lorithia could not help her mind wander as she settled in for a mundane straight glide, when a sudden squawk brought her back to attention.

Moments later, a loud *crack* sounded in the distance, with the acoustics of the mountain range both amplifying the volume and masking the source.

It wasn’t until she gave up trying to determine from which direction the sound had come that she realized she was losing altitude. Her telethia’s left wing had been struck by something, and it could no longer stay airborne with an injured appendage.

Lorithia attempted to steer herself toward a level landing zone, and she thanked her luck as there were no jagged peaks or large drop offs in the vicinity. The lower portion of the Valak Mountains, upon closer inspection from above, was actually rather flat. Her approach was quicker than she’d have liked, but with a completely manageable jolt, the telethia impacted and Lorithia hopped off, curious as to what had hit the beast. She lifted her mount’s wing -- no small feat of strength -- and examined it.

A small, spherical wound was the only sign of an object that had punctured the flesh. Telethia were not easy to bring down in a fight, but flying was another, more delicate matter.

Lorithia circled around the front and peered into the eyes of her companion. She had never given it a name -- she would not do it that disrespect -- and although she knew it could still feel pain, if it truly was in agony, it was doing a convincing job of hiding it.

It seemed to know something she didn’t, though, as a single tear rolled down its cheek. “What’s wrong?” she foolishly said aloud. She began to worry, looking around at the utter lack of resources in the area. They’d have to move soon, as night was beginning to fall, and Lorithia was stil no closer than she’d been when Zanza had been defeated to finding a way to reverse that turn of events.

*Crack!*

Lorithia screamed as the telethia’s head exploded into a mass of flesh, blood, and bone, ducking into a roll and darting for cover. She scurried behind a snowbank and kept her head down.

They’d followed her; they must have! Who else would be crazy enough to pursue her to this frozen wasteland?

“It’s no use.” A decidedly masculine voice boomed. “You’ve nowhere to run. Face me.”

Lorithia did no such thing, but instead found her voice. She decided that, if nothing else, she would not be taken without her dignity. “You’ve made a grievous error, announcing yourself like this. Did you think you could take me back alive? You won’t get another opportunity.”

“You seem to have mistaken me for someone else,” came the even-keeled reply.

She had no choice now; Lorithia hazarded a peek over the snowbank. Where she expected the domineering visage of her High Entia pursuers, she instead was shocked to see a single Homs man holding mechanical weapon pointed at her current position.

Apprehension turned to disdain, which quickly gave way to pride.
This fledgling plays at besting a High Entia?
Instead of responding, Lorithia retaliated with a burst of thunder ether, aiming as best she could with the element of surprise still intact. She was well wide of her target, who did not seem the least bit phased.

“High Entia, I ask you: your thrall is dead. Did its sins die with it, or does the blame lie with you?”

Lorithia had no idea what the man meant, but her curiosity got the better of her. “You’ll have to excuse me if I’m mixing up the groups of people I’ve managed to cross today. Would you care to elaborate?”

“This beast, and others like it, attacked my village, and murdered an entire squad of my people.”

Lorithia fought to maintain her neutral tone and expression, as this bit of news was unbeknownst to her. She’d simply summoned this High Entia across the net of ether that permeated the entire Bionis; she’d had no idea where it had actually been beforehand. “Perhaps you should train your soldiers better,” she retorted, in an attempt to both goad him and cover her slip.

“Your words ring true even if you do not mean this in earnest. Most of my people are ill-equipped to defend ether -- the mechon do not employ such...precise methods.”

“How unfortunate for you,” she deadpanned, sending another blast at him, and this one hit the mark.

Lorithia’s celebration was cut short as the blast harmlessly fizzled around the man and dissipated into the air.

“I am not most of my people,” he explained.

“Who, then, are you?” Lorithia countered.

“I am Gadolt,” introduced the soldier, “Second in command of the Colony Six Defense Corps.”

“And you’re here...all by yourself?” Lorithia continued for him, not quite comfortable with this man’s state of mind.

From the distance, Gadolt’s gun still trained on her, Lorithia could see him nod.

“I hate to be the bearer of, well, even more bad news for you, but I am not the one who orchestrated that attack.” This was, at least, true. She did not generally handle the situations on the Lower Bionis, and this was no exception. This entire meeting was nothing more than an ill-timed coincidence.

Still, by some miracle of luck or pure determination, this man managed to find his way to her, tracking a telethia all the way from the southern lands of Colony 6 to Alcamoth, and then to this frozen hellhole, of all places. She knew even her counterpart would be impressed.

“I know. Your reaction when I mentioned this was one of genuine surprise.”

Lorithia allowed herself to relax, if only a little. She had a chance. “What do you want from me?”

“It returned to you; it clearly saw you as its master, even if you do not seem to mourn its passing,” Gadolt astutely pointed out.

The man allowed the rifle to drop, just a hair, so that Lorithia could see the grizzled, weathered face behind it. This man had aged ahead his time, and it was written all over his face. The words came out slowly and deliberately.

“Why did this beast attack our men?”

She decided, in lieu of the truth she could not give, that candor was her best approach. “Will my answer change anything? Besides, what possessed you to make this journey by yourself? Why not bring your soldiers?”

Gadolt snorted. “Soldiers. Truth is, in troubled times, we take anyone who is fit to hold a gun. They’d never have made it out here.”

Lorithia had never been to Colony 6 in person, and she certainly didn’t have any insight as to the general quality of life there. She said nothing.

“Then of course,” he continued, “we have the mechon, which still need to be mitigated.” His expression hardened again. “We know all about the mechon, what they stand for. We know they won’t stop until every last one of us is dead. A dire situation, but one that can be planned around, rallied against.

“We don’t know a damn thing about these telethia, save that they seem to be intelligent. We did not expect an attack, but rest assured we will not make that mistake again.”

Lorithia actually found she felt sorry for the man. Pitted in an unending war with a seemingly limitless enemy, only to find himself attacked on two fronts? A lesser man may have succumbed to despair.

This man, however, likely deserted his command to gain exactly the answers to the questions he probed her with. And that meant she was more use to him alive than dead. She could work with this. “What happens now? I clearly cannot beat you in a fight, and you’ve robbed me of my only way out.”

“You’ll come with me, of course. I don’t believe I’ll be able to get back very easily without that telethia to follow. You mentioned you are also on the run?”

She winced at that error, recalling her initial assumption that he was a member of the Royal Guard sent to arrest her. Gadolt didn’t need any more advantages on her than he already had, and the tone of his ‘suggestion’ implied it would be better served taken as an order. “...Of course,” she managed. “Where are we going?”

“For now, to shelter, and perhaps even food. I trust you have no objections?”

Despite all that had happened in the past few minutes, Lorithia managed to flash a smile. “Lead the way.”

I have just realized I have made an (extremely minor) flip error on Day 1.

² should have flipped "Odd-Night Ability Cop" instead of simply "Ability Cop"

I apologize if this has affected the game adversely in any way, but I'm doubting this is the case.

~Sword Valley~
Around the same time

Fiora staggered ahead, eyes set on the abandoned encampment that was going to have to serve as shelter for the evening.

The last attack had taken her off guard, and if she’d reacted a split second later she knew she’d have been killed. Yet ever since her encounter with the enigmatic Meyneth, Fiora felt herself stronger, more agile, and able to exploit weaknesses in the rogue Mechon attackers she didn’t even know they had.

Fiora had often wondered whether Meyneth had chosen her specifically, or that any poor sap who had stumbled upon that memory core could be here in her place. Either way, Fiora’s thoughts seemed compatible enough with the alien presence that now resided within her, compelling her to trek to Mechonis and...

What, exactly? Fiora still did not know, only that she
had
to do this. Hopefully Meyneth, or the echo of her Fiora still possessed, would explain when she got there. She sighed. Fiora had long given up trying to rationalize her own behavior to herself, realizing that Meyneth’s desires, for all intents and purposes, were now her own.

A red light gleaming into her eyes jolted Fiora from any further introspection, and without thinking she ducked into a roll and positioned herself behind one of the sturdier metal outcroppings that littered the Mechonis landscape, and not a moment too soon. A burst of energy jetted toward where she had just been, rattling the steely ground near her.

She hazarded a peek. It was one of the floating seeker drones, not too powerful except at range. She’d run into dozens of them, but unfortunately, this one had a bit of distance on her. She would have to get fancy. Stifling a yawn -- despite her newfound powers, she still needed sleep -- she pulled her daggers from their sheaths. Close quarters combat was her specialty, and while she could launch the dagger at it, she wasn’t sure if she could trust her aim.

Fiora had just decided against that plan when the Mechon exploded of its own accord in front of her. A bit of shrapnel ricocheted off the nearby wall with a light *clang*.

“Need some help there, little lady?”

Her ears perked up; the voice had come from directly behind her. She spun around, and stared into the face of one of the last people she expected to see in the middle of this wasteland.

“Dickson? Dickson, is that you?! What are you doing here? How did you--”

“Hey now, “ the man, Dickson, attempted to quell Fiora’s confoundment, and closed the distance between the two, lowering his rifle as he did. “No need to get all riled up on my account. You weren’t too hard to find, after all.”

Fiora was taken aback by this admission. “You
followed
me? Why?”

Dickson shook his head. “Not exactly; the Nopon have been keeping tabs on you -- I just had to ask around. And I couldn’t let Dunban wake up and find out his little sister had gotten herself killed, now could I?”

Fiora didn’t say anything to that, and instead she waited for the question she knew was on the older man’s tongue.

He did not disappoint. “What the hell were you thinking, Fiora, coming all the way out here? Gonna take on the whole Mechon army by yourself?” He ran a hand through his hair.

“I finally caught up just a little bit ago, and not a moment too soon, from the look of it,” Dickson continued. He pierced her with his stare. “What are you trying to prove?”

She lowered her head. “I don’t know, Dickson. I just know that I have to do this.”

The man actually snorted. “Have to do what? Says who?”

Fiora didn’t know the answer to the former question, not yet, but she was certain that Meyneth would fill in the rest, eventually. She had to.

“I trust Meyneth,” was all Fiora said.

Fiora though she saw a look of shock briefly pass over Dickson’s face, but then it was gone. “Explain.” he finally said, a little more passively than his previous behest that Fiora abandon this mission entirely.

Fiora, however, couldn’t help herself, finally getting the opportunity to talk about this strange phenomenon afflicting her. “I found something, a while back, on one of the Mechon wreckage sites. I think it imprinted itself onto me.”

“...And what exactly did it...imprint?”

“It’s hard to explain,” she continued. “She was from Mechonis. Meyneth, I mean. But I’ve seen her memories, heard her desires. It’s almost like her entire personality lives on, inside of me.” Fiora had begun animatedly gesturing with her hands. “She wanted to stop the fighting, but I think she needed someone from Bionis to help her. I’m not sure if she’s truly alive, still, but I think she would approve of me being that someone.”

Dickson did not say anything to that, nor did it seem that anything was forthcoming. Fiora turned away. “I’ve made up my mind to continue, Dickson. You can come with me if you’d like, but I won’t let you talk me down.”

“I’m afraid it’s not that simple,” was the response, and Fiora was surprised by the hard edge Dickson’s tone had taken that she turned back around.

To find that the barrel of Dickson’s rifle was now pointed straight at her.

Her blood turned to ice, and she felt herself unable to move. “What?” was all she managed to say.

“It really breaks my heart to have to do this, kid,” Dickson stated flatly, the utter lack of emotion in his words not lost on Fiora. “But I can’t allow the Vessel of Meyneth return to Agniratha.”

“To...where? And you know Meyneth?”

Dickson unexpectedly smiled at this. “Your brother did not choose his friends very carefully. Mumkhar was a maniac with no loyalty to anyone except his own deluded self. And as for me, well, my own loyalties are a little more, shall we say, complicated.”

“Who is Meyneth, Dickson?!” Fiora all but shouted. Adrenaline flowed through her, and she was compelled to move to her right.

“The mother of Mechonis. The big boss, head honcho, you get the idea. We thought Dunban, bless his heart, had finished her off, but apparently she had a backup plan. And it’s time to tie up that loose end.”

He pulled the trigger, but Fiora was no longer there.

“She can’t save you forever,” Dickson sneered. He lined up another shot, but Fiora took to the air, vaulting off a large pile of metal debris close by. The shot went wide, and Dickson was momentarily thrown off balance.

In one fluid motion, Fiora flipped a dagger from her belt and launched it straight at her assailant’s neck, where it buried itself in soft flesh. A crimson spray shot from Dickson’s punctured vein as he dropped his weapon in pain and surprise. He quickly crumpled to the ground.

Fiora landed mere feet away and walked up to him, peering into his eyes, and finally saw Dickson for who he truly was.
Zanza’s most trusted disciple.

And then, as the tension faded, Meyneth’s presence in her mind receded. Who was Zanza? Why was Zanza so intent on destroying her?

Fiora sank to the ground as well. Dickson was dead, unable to impart a single word before the life had drained out of him. Dunban, if he ever recovered, would be heartbroken to know of his friend’s betrayal, but Fiora was content in the fact that his relief at her victory would trump that sentiment.

Fiora steeled herself to move onward. She wanted to be as far away from here as possible before she laid down to rest tonight.

~Colony 9~
An undetermined amount of time later

“Seriously, what the hell.” said Shulk to no one in particular as he woke from his six month long power nap.

“Aren’t I supposed to be the goddamn protagonist? Where the fuck is everybody?”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

~Take 2~

First Reyn, then Fiora: his two best friends had vanished without a trace. Dunban might never wake up again. Colony 9 had been attacked by Mechon. Reports were coming in that Colony 6 has suffered a yet worse attack themselves.

These events, along with a nagging feeling that he was just
missing something important
had brought Shulk to the weapons development lab in the heart of Colony 9, the same place where Dunban and the mysterious woman had come to blows not long ago.

It was here that the Monado, now under constant armed guard, still rested, unused since Dunban’s reckless actions that day.

And it was a simple matter to get himself alone in the room, waving the guard off with some technobabble about resonance tests that he’d made up on the spot.

Welcome, True Heir to the Monado.

Shulk did not flinch as he gripped hold of the sacred blade and was whisked off into the unknown.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“We’ve all been waiting for you, Shulk.”

[[NEXT TIME: THE THRILLING CONCLUSION TO:
STORY THAT I HOPE TO FUCK HAS SOME SEMBLANCE OF COHESION BY THE END OF IT
]]

I think ultimately it didn't change anything and I am thankful for that, but at the same time I feel really bad that this last minute replacement had to happen at all and a huge shoutout to ProHawk who really helped out and unfortunately was not able to reap any benefit for his efforts.

I think that was one instance where flavor knowledge might have tipped you off that Meyneth's neighbor was Fiora (since Zanza was dead) and Fiora would be town.

Flavor coming within the hour, as well as night actions n shit. Then I'm gonna work on Xenogears finalization because goddammit you guys deserve it after how awesome you made this game.

~Agniratha~
Fiora, at last, reached the final step, allowing herself to fall to her knees as she did. She had made it: The place where she stood, she knew, was called Agniratha, the Mechonis seat of power. Fiora now found it difficult to tell where her own personality ended and Meyneth’s began.

“My lady.”

She was not surprised to see a tall Machina woman waiting for her, her form prostrated before Fiora’s own much shorter stature. “Vanea,” Fiora confirmed.

“Your integration is complete. You must hurry, before he realizes what I have done.”

“Then let us begin.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“So is there a Mrs. Gadolt?” Lorithia smirked.

The response, as it had been to all of her other attempts at (overly personal) conversation, was a simple grunt, as Gadolt tended the fire. They sat in silence for a few more minutes.

“A fiance,” he finally replied.

Lorithia raised her eyebrows in response. Gadolt was certainly attractive enough, but he had the personality, so far, of a plank of wood. “When’s the wedding?”

“When this
damn
war is over.”

Lorithia couldn’t think of anything to say to that.
Back to the drawing board.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Nnngh...?”

“Shulk.”

“Shulk! ‘Ey Shulk!”

Shulk opened his eyes and stared directly into the face of a man he thought he’d never see again. “Reyn!” He kicked his legs upward and sat up. “Where had you gotten off to? We had people from colony looking everywhere! If I’d have known...”

He trailed off as he looked around. “Actually, where are we?”

“Eh, Alvis’ll explain. Basically we’re in another dimension or something; I didn’t really understand most what he was talking about. This here’s Juju.”

Shulk only just noticed that there were two others standing behind Reyn: a young homs boy that Reyn had referred to as Juju, and a girl unlike any he had ever seen.

“...And this is Melia. She’s from the Upper Bionis, she says.”

Shulk was mesmerized. “Delighted,” he managed to make out.

“Hello.”

“Pleased to meet you.”

Shulk’s gaze passed to Juju, then hung on Melia a little longer than he’d planned, and then moved back to Reyn. “You mentioned an Alvis.”

“So he did. Welcome, Shulk. I hope you’ll forgive me for forcing you here.”

Another man had approached from behind, and now stood next to Reyn. Two people could not have looked less alike. “Hello,” said Shulk. He had a feeling Alvis was prepared to explain anything he might think to ask.

“Yes, it was I who compelled you to wield the Monado so that I could bring you here. It is time for you to gather your flock and break the chains of fate. Unfortunately, I was forced to expend a considerable amount of energy pulling these three out of harm’s way, delaying my contact with you.”

Shulk frowned. “With me? Why me?”

“A story for another time. In any event, we should soon possess the means to return to the Bionis. It is there you shall make your stand.”

“Stand? Against whom?”

Alvis’ gaze bore into him. “The very essences of the Bionis and Mechonis themselves.”

The Bionis?

“Hear him out, Shulk,” said Reyn. “the Mechon ain’t the only guys wanting to do us in.”

“That will make itself apparent in due time. However, Zanza, the vehicle in which I was to use to return you to the Bionis, has disappeared from the world.”

Reyn seemed taken aback by this. Apparently Alvis was in the habit of revealing information exactly at the moment it became necessarily and not an iota before. “What does that mean, then?”

“It would seem we need to use an alternate beacon.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vangarre sat polishing his rifle for what had to be the third time that day. The others were joking behind his back, he was sure. That was mostly all they ever did. Vangarre would maintain constant vigilance, and his subordinates would slack off and make cracks at his expense.

He’d given up on instilling any sort of discipline in them, and he’d made his peace with that, as there were more important things to do. He’d been a soldier longer than the lot of these jokers combined. And his instincts were telling him that something was about to happen, something monumental. He put the rifle down. He’d better check the cannons too.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“We found this at her residence.”

Kallian took the slip from the guard and began to read.

“Where would Lorithia have gotten this? A mechon battle plan? I didn’t even know they
had
battle plans.”

“Your orders?”

Kallian rested his chin on his hand as he sat in his late father’s vacated chair. The Emperor had been a prudent man. Perhaps Melia would have rushed off to the aid of some unnamed colony on the Bionis’ leg. But he, Kallian, was not Melia.

Finally, he gave the order. “We wait. Keep your ears to the winds.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“My lady,” said Vanea. “The process is complete.”

Vanea gestured to one of the various reflective surfaces in the palace, and Fiora inspected her new body.

It was just as Meyneth had looked, except her face, which had been left intact. Fiora could not tell where flesh ended and machine began.

“Recall all of our forces,” said Fiora. “Zanza’s disciples will grow desperate, now that he is gone and I am safe from the Monado.”
That
, she knew, had been Fiora’s mission: to integrate herself with the Machina called Meyneth, so that she would be the best of both worlds. Meyneth could now control the mechon once again, and she was also immune to the effects of the Monado for good.

“They will not follow you!” boomed a voice from above.

Fiora’s hair stood on end.
It couldn’t be.

“Brother,” Vanea said, apprehension plaguing her tone. “You’ve returned.”

Fiora nodded. “Egil.”

A golden mechon hovered above them, and its cockpit receded to reveal a machina man similar in appearance to Vanea.

“What scheme have you cooked up?” Egil asked. “A homs girl?”

“Appearances can be deceiving,”
Meyneth
countered. “There is something to be said for shoring up ones weaknesses before augmenting one’s strengths.”

“Do you care to stake your life on that assessment?”

Meyneth sighed. “Zanza is gone. He cannot hurt us anymore. You do not have to do this.”

“He is
not
gone! He merely wants you to think so! Trickery, lies, and deceit; it is all they know. It is their nature.

“I will shine the light of judgment upon Bionis and expose them for what they are.”

Meyneth closed her eyes. Vanea had planned for this, and it only seconds later that she was swept off her feet and placed in the cockpit of a silver mechon of Vanea’s design.

“Then, Egil,” came Meyneth’s ultimatum. “You will have to go through me.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I have isolated our beacon,” Alvis calmly stated. “However, she seems to be in a state of flux. We may have to simply wait this out, or...”

The light that had manifested itself on the dome of black that extended infinitely from their oasis suddenly winked out.

“This is most troubling,” said Alvis, his tone unchanged.

“I suppose we have no choice.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shulk saw the room in the basement of the Weapon Development Lab materialize before him, and he knew he was home. Melia, Juju, and Reyn all stood in front of him.

And the Monado, which he had been holding when he’d disappeared, lay cracked in two on the floor.

“Shulk,” breathed Reyn. “The Monado. What could do that?”

Shulk didn’t know, but he had a sinking feeling that Alvis had not meant for this to happen.

A series of tremors rocked the room. Melia had to fight to keep her balance, and Shulk instinctively reached out and grabbed her.

She raised an eyebrow at him.

“Sorry. There you are,” he finished lamely.

“An earthquake,” asked Reyn.

“Artillery,” stated Juju, as if there was no room for debate. “I’m used to it. We get hit by Mechon a lot back home.”

“We should get topside,” Shulk instructed. “Come on.”

They ran upstairs, and soon reached the commercial district. The streets were empty; the citizens had it drilled into them to take shelter when the mechon came.

Dunban and Fiora’s house was at the front of town, near the gate. He had to check on Dunban, and hopefully he’d run into Dickson on the way.

A voice materialized from seemingly all around them.
We demand the presence of Shulk at the front gate. You now have five minutes to comply.

Shulk stopped dead in his tracks, the others whirling around to stare at him. He couldn’t blame them.

The questions flooded his brain.
The mechon wanted him? Why? How long had they been asking? What would they do if he did not show?

The last question fizzled his train of thought. There really was only one course of action.

“I’m going.”

“That’s crazy, Shulk!” Reyn protested. “They’ll kill you!”

“I don’t think so.” Shulk countered. “Why ask for me? What threat am I to them by myself? I have to go, Reyn.”

“Then I’m coming with you, at least!”

“Of course,” he agreed. There was no harm in that. “Juju, Melia, you obviously aren’t--”

Juju cracked his knuckles. “I’m in.”

“Attaboy,” Reyn cheered. Shulk glared at him.

“I will accompany you as well,” Melia stated regally. “I must be apprised on the state of affairs on all parts of the Bionis if I am to take the throne.”

The throne?
thought Shulk. Just who was this girl?

“Yeah, yeah,” Reyn muttered, as if he’d been getting sick of hearing that. “Let’s not keep ‘em waiting then.” He hadn’t left any room for Shulk to protest. He began to walk again.

As they approached the gates, Shulk realized that there had been nothing more than a minor shelling of the area. The Colony militia had hunkered down behind their defenses, but the melee had not been joined.

Across the field stood more mechon than he’d ever hoped he’d see, but the one giving the orders stood at the head; a giant, gold mechon with a monstrous face.

And it was from that space that the words continued. “You are Shulk?” it boomed.

He marched forward, motioning for the others to stay back. “I am,” he stated loudly.

The cockpit of the mechon opened to reveal a rather humanoid looking mechanical man. “Good,” said the pilot. “I am Egil, leader of the mechon army. I’ll not beat around the bush: you have exactly two options: surrender or die. Which will it be?”

Shulk didn’t understand. “Why is this my choice?” he implored.

“You wield the Monado. You speak for Zanza, and therefore you speak for the Bionis. Your secular associations do not concern me.”

“And if we refuse to yield to you?” Shulk said without thinking.

He was still yards away, but Shulk could have sworn he saw Egil smirk. “Then you will meet the same fate as the last one who tried to challenge me.”

The large hands on the mechon opened, and a body tumbled out, landing on the soft earth and rolling toward shulk until it stopped. He approached it, knelt down, and his blood turned to ice water as recognition dawned.

Fiora’s lifeless eyes stared back at his own.

The cries of his friends were a whisper on the breeze against the storm that raged in his heart. Abandoning all pretense of rationality, Shulk ran to the nearest soldier, grabbed his weapon, and took off at a sprint toward Egil, and toward his own demise.

The last thing he saw were a million lights against the forest backdrop as the mechons’ guns blazed to life.

tl;dr: rocks fall, everyone dies. (Except BRO, obviously. You still win.) Obviously the tipping point here is that Fiora wins that fight if you lynched correctly, and Kallian decides to get off his ass and help. Vangarre is still kind of a really unimportant character so he doesn't do anything interesting and believe me if this game were 19p he'd be the first to go.

What’s left to say guys? This game kicked ass and I’m really happy that everyone had such a great time overall. That Metal Sonic business at the end was a bump in the road, but other than that I am happy to have provided a smooth experience for everyone.

Night actions will follow. Thanks everyone so much for playing.

This is my hastily made pre-in list.
Let me know if I missed your entry, but if you haven't pre-inned yet I'm going to request that you wait for signups at this point so that people get a fair shot at this game.
