Rules


a) Ethics and Etiquette


i) All the global rules and guidelines hold in this game, and are not duplicated below. Make sure you know what they prohibit.
ii) Never link to or quote from any QuickTopic provided by the mod, or from hydra QuickTopics. Loose paraphrasing should be fine.
iii) Excessive coarse language should not be directed at other players. Frustration is natural, but keep it in check.
iv) Cryptography and steganography are strictly forbidden.
v) If you have outside information which alters your knowledge of the game or suspect the game has been compromised, contact the mod immediately.
vi) If you are not sure whether an action you take could break these rules, err on the side of caution and privately contact the mod to find out.

b) Life, Death, and Lynching Mechanics


i) Your vote or unvote is valid so long as it contains the word 'vote' or 'unvote' directly followed by a player's name or 'no lynch', all in instantly readable unquoted bold text.
ii) Abbreviations or misspellings of a player's name or 'no lynch' are valid whilst voting, so long as they are unambiguous.
iii) A lynch occurs when a player receives greater than 50% of all votes.
iv) A no lynch occurs when greater than or equal to 50% of all votes are placed in favour. The game will progress to Night without a lynch.
v) Further votes and unvotes are invalid after a lynch or no lynch occurs.
vi) Players are not allowed to post once they have died through lynch or kill, including 'bah' posts.
vii) Votes and unvotes are invalid if they come from any account not listed as alive and presently in the game.
viii) If you are not sure whether a vote is or will be valid, err on the side of caution and privately contact the mod to find out.

c) Activity, Deadlines, and Action Submission


i) All Day phases last for 14 real life days.
ii) Night phases last 72 hours, but can be ended at the mod's discretion if all night actions are in and no player requests Night last its full length.
iii) Deadlines are extended only in exceptional circumstances or if a player needs replacement. No phase ends until all playerslots are occupied.
iv) Players may continue talking after a lynch has occurred until the mod flips the lynched player.
v) If Day or Night actions are not submitted via PM or bolded in a mod-provided QT before deadline, they do not resolve.
vi) Players who do not wish to perform an available Day or Night action should submit 'no action'.
vii) Players who do not post for 48 hours will be prodded. Not responding to a prod within 24 hours or receiving 4 prods will see a player being replaced.
viii) If a player expects to be unable to post for upwards of 48 hours, they should declare V/LA legibly, in bold, in-thread, to avoid being prodded.
ix) Keep in mind that being inactive disrupts the mod's and other players' enjoyment of the game and darkens their view of you.

d) Miscellaneous


i) When in doubt, ask the mod.
ii) Actions are resolved according to Natural Action Resolution, unless stated otherwise in your Role PM.
iii) The mod reserves the colour

iv) Don't exploit technicalities or poor wording in the rules to do something you should know is forbidden and unethical.
v) Punishment for breaking the rules is determined on a case-by-case basis, and may range from a warning to a modkill or force replacement.

Dos surveyed the night.
He stood in the doorway of his apartment block and gazed out at the city. He had a fantastic view of the sprawl of the metropolis: millions of tiny lights arranged in perfect formations, some moving, some not. High rise buildings shot out of the ground like bars on a graph. Some were so tall that they were almost at eye level with him -- they had escaped the valley altogether and peered out into suburbia. Sometimes, from his room, Dos could see people in them peering out the window.

And then there was one other building, much, much taller than the rest, built in a feat of human engineering ten years prior. Dos had to crane his neck to follow its path upwards. The building was speckled with lights, but at a certain height they began to gradate into invisibility. Everyone knew why. At some point within the last decade air pollution had reached such unbelievable proportions that thick layers of smog blocked out the sky. During the days, hazy and overcast, it appeared as a shifting mass. At night it sat in the air, invisible, yet reflecting back light malevolently and perpetually. The world appeared badly in need of contrast. It was for this reason that Dos, gazing at the giant structure and wondering what was happening on the floors enveloped by smog, was about to leave his apartment.

Even in the middle at winter long after the sun had set, too much light penetrated people's windows for them to sleep. Some people tried to solve the problem in various ways. Some hung thick blackout curtains over their windows. Some wore darkly tinted glasses or sleep masks to bed. Some tried pseudo-scientific natural remedies or took sleeping pills to speed up the approach of unconsciousness. But most used Lunariums, structures deep underground built solely for the purpose of getting humanity a good night's sleep. Lunariums were so good that one night's rest in one could last you through the rest of the week. Two consecutive nights would see you leave with no trace of sleep deficit. If you used it any more frequently than that, Dos had been told, you would step out feeling completely rejuvenated, half a lifetime younger (and half a bank account lighter, no doubt). But people claimed that not only were the Lunariums costly, the use of artificial methods to fall asleep would bring ill health and a shortened lifespan. Rumours circulated that its users were secretly injected with illicit drugs that only put them under the illusion that they felt rested -- these people referred to Lunariums as 'La-La Land', a name that was starting to catch on with the wider population. Some pointed out that the corporation responsible for them was notoriously untransparent in its methods and refused to allow audits for standards complience. The only thing it cared about, they said, were its profits.

Dos wasn't a cynic, though. In the modern age, he believed, where humans litigated for anything from stepping in dog shit to tripping on the sidewalk, any corporation that so much as put a toe out of line would be filing for bankruptcy within a month. Lunariums still existed; ergo, they must not be doing anything wrong.

So he was heading to one -- after six days of non-stop work and play, he needed rest. A smooth transport pod glided up to Dos's feet. Its door hissed open, sliding up, and Dos climbed inside. He sat on the plush, comfortable seat and directed location information from his HUD to the pod's interface. Data appeared on his HUD; he confirmed it, paid using his credit chip, and the pod closed the door, locked itself, and slowly drifted down the valley towards its destination.

Start of "Night" 1 (Part 1)

As he moved downwards, Dos kept his eyes on the building that vanished into the sky.
He fixed his vision on the uppermost light and watched it grow smaller and smaller until it was too small to be visible. Then he looked outside the pod's windshield. In front of him, humanity had sprung up: transport pods, buildings, giant billboards. He looked down through the transparent base of the pod and saw socialite humans walking with friends, chatting, eating in one of the city's many cafes, and drinking in one of its many bars. Dos felt subdued and isolated, alone. Very few pods were moving alongside him deeper into the heart of the city where the main business district was located, and an even fewer proportion of those, he knew, would arrive at the same location as him. He found a pod in his peripheral vision that seemed to be moving in the direction he was and focused on it.

As the computer system navigated him through packed streets he stared at the other pod's tinted windows and pretended its destination was his Lunarium. Who was inside? A university student, perhaps, looking for rest after a week spent cramming for their end of semester exams. A professional couple, seeking relief after a busy week. A tourist looking for dreams of home. A prostitute and their client. Dos imagined he was in the other pod, imagined someone gazing directly at where he was seated, unaware of their gaze seeking to penetrate the tinted exterior. A slight chill ran through his spine.

After a while the other pod abruptly turned away and Dos broke away from his daydream. He did not realise how far the pod had traveled without him noticing, and while he was scrambling to establish his location his Lunarium's entrance came into view. 'Entrance' being a poor term for it. Lunariums were in fact located hundreds of kilometres underground, buried deep under the earth. Because of their location, millions of them could service a single city. Gigantic tubes contained masses of water and made use of Archimedes' principle to convey patrons below and above the ground. There was only one place these lifts led to, as far as Dos knew: a large room, kind of like a lounge, where customers could converse with each other before and after their sleep. A large monitor was mounted on the wall. It displayed the rooms that were currently vacant. Dos had sat in the lounge before sleeping once, unsuccessfully trying to hit on a woman, and had looked up at the monitor during a lull in conversation to read the colour-coded floor plan. He hadn't done it for any reason other than to look busy during the awkward silence, but he felt a strange disquiet from noticing that precisely three rooms, out of the twenty-five total, were supposedly 'occupied'. If he had counted the people emerging from the water lifts he would be able to tell whether or not they contained people or whether the Lunarium was just not filled to capacity that night. As it were, though, he felt strange wondering if there were people within the rooms. Despite the expertly designed and furnished interior of the lounge, the highly personal feeling of the Lunarium was thrown off utterly by the minute detail that the software did not distinguish between empty rooms that would service no customers and rooms who already housed their customers. Dos found it hard to fall asleep that night.

In any case, the above-ground 'entrance' to his Lunarium was in sight. It was a one-storey building on the coast, located adjacent to the city's port. As you walked in, a receptionist would greet you, check for your appointment, and then you would be led into the oddly clandestine room containing the gigantic pipes and strapped into a small egg-shaped container. After what felt like forever, you would slowly begin to sink. It could be hard to tell you were falling, but there would be a subtle sensation of downwards movement and you would need to pop your ears. As far as Dos knew, there was no other room in the facility save what lay beyond the door behind the receptionist's desk. Dos was pretty sure it was a staff room. The door had a keycard reader and a keypad affixed, although he had never seen anyone go in or out.

Dos was thinking about the room when he felt the air temperature inside the pod change. He blinked and realised the door had slid open. The transparent surfaces had turned opaque. Dos's HUD displayed a brief thank-you message from the organisation that owned the pod. He could smell the sea and see the silhouettes of palm trees. A small breeze picked up. He stepped outside into the night.

He made his way to the Lunarium building, took a deep breath, and stepped inside. He kept his eyes on the glittering waters as the door shut behind him. It was a small ritual for him, having the sea be his last vision of the outside -- the building had no windows and the actual Lunarium obviously also lacked them. When he turned around, the receptionist was waiting for him. She had a pleasant expression on her face.

Things proceeded as usual. He had his appointment confirmed and was led to the room with the tubes. As the receptionist explained the function of the Lunarium, he noticed behind her shoulder another egg-pod had already begun to sink. He frowned. Ever since the day he'd seen three rooms occupied on the monitor, he had liked to be first one down. Today was, in fact, the first time it appeared he wouldn't make it.

He was no longer making eye contact, but the receptionist continued without a hitch. When she announced that he was ready to go, Dos drew his sight from the tube where the egg-pod had receded under the water and dragged it to the woman's face. She smiled and he felt himself smile back. Then he clambered into his egg-pod and waited. He selected a movie from the pod's entertainment database and watched it load onto his HUD. By the time the progress bar filled he was already moving, Dos realised with a slow shock. Then he settled back and played the film.

The film ended and as credits rolled down his vision Dos slowly faded back into reality.
He registered the strange, small sensation of weightlessness that meant he was falling. He was no scientist, but he thought about the physics involved in it all. Thoughts collided and ricocheted in his mind for a while, and he gave himself over to the feeling. Melancholy stole over him and made his skin tingle. He thought about the bustle of the city so far away.

After a bit the egg-pod was rocked with a small jolt and a smooth, mechanical voice told him that they had arrived at the Lunarium below ground. A mechanism whirred as it aligned the vehicle with the seal of the tube, and then the doors slid open. Dos stepped out, and they closed behind him. He pushed the 'up' button on the tube and the doors slid open again. He surveyed the interior of the egg-pod, and then he let the doors close once more.

Something was nagging at the back of his head, but he could not get a grip on it. He looked at the numbers on his keycard and opened his designated room. The lights flickered on, revealing a small but spacious room, rather like a hotel room but with a futuristic looking bed. It was reminiscent of the palm of a human hand. Nothing looked particularly abnormal. He closed the door and faced the lounge. Nobody else had arrived.

Nobody else had arrived...? Dos looked at the monitor in the lounge. It displayed exactly one room as occupied.

"What..."

Dos slowly half-turned, and made sure his door was locked. It was. And yet, the monitor still displayed one room as occupied. Then Dos remembered. Another egg-pod had already been sinking when he entered the Lunarium. The occupant must immediately have gone to bed upon their arrival on the bottom floor. This was strange, but not unheard of: most people enjoyed the hour or so of socialising before their rest. The whole place felt intimate, but there was some special quality that invited discussion between humans who would not otherwise have looked at each other as they passed on the street. It was hard to pinpoint.

The thought irritated him for the rest of the night. The other customers appeared to be pretty normal. Dos felt odd. He didn't try to hit it off with anybody. At half past eleven, he went to bed.

Some time later, he woke to a low rumble. Everything was shaking.

Spoiler: About the Dream Planter ability / Dream mechanic
The Mafia must create two lists, one ranking themselves in order of preference (most to least) to appear in a Dream, and one ranking everybody else in order of preference (most to least) to appear in a Dream. They must indicate how many of themselves they want to appear in the Dream (they must choose at least one) -- the number they choose is the number of names taken from the top of the Mafia list. The remainder is drawn from the 'everybody else' list (9 - 6(mafia/town) rounded to the nearest number equalled the number of players that were to appear in a dream). If any player from either list dies (from Vigilante or Mafia kill), simply replace them with the next player in the respective preference list. A maximum of two players may appear in concurrent Dreams, but not for three or more Dreams in a row (if not possible, this condition was waived).

Compose the PM using the sample PM in the Setup modpost.

Then, create a list of all the players who did not use an action at night (including those who had no action to use, i.e. Vazzzilla Townies and some Mafia Zzzoons), factor in the action of the Compulsive Pharmacist, randomise it using random.org's List Randomiser, and send the PM to whoever appears at the top of that list.

This was explained to the Mafia like so:
You must create two lists -- one containing the names of members presently in your faction ranked from greatest to least preference to appear in a Dream, and the other containing the names of players who are not presently members of your faction ranked from greatest to least preference to appear in a Dream. You must also indicate how many members of your faction you want to appear in the Dream. This number must be greater than or equal to one (1) unless otherwise specified. These two lists are used to compose the Dream. The number of members in your faction you specified you wanted to be in the Dream will be drawn from the top of the list in which you ranked your faction members from most to least preference to appear. The remainder of players necessary to fill the number of slots to appear in a Dream -- a number you are not aware of -- will be drawn from the top of the list of names of players who are not part of your faction ranked from most to least preference to appear in a Dream. The Dream is then composed and sent to a randomly selected Sleeping player. This ability resolves after kills, meaning that a Dream cannot be sent to a dead player, nor can dead players appear in a Dream. If a player who was to appear in a Dream dies, the next player down in their list is selected to take their place, provided they too are still alive.

A maximum of two players may appear in concurrent Dreams, but not for three or more Dreams in a row.

I am so, so sorry for flaking on this game. Unforeseen real world stuff took all my spare time away. Thanks to SnakePlissken for his efforts, Gammagooey and BBmolla for taking over after him (you guys were superb), my reviewers, all those who replaced in, and all those who played through to the very end. I hope this game has not badly coloured your perceptions of me. I'm sorry if that was the case.

I have a few more comments to make on the setup, but I'll save them until after the thread is unlocked.

I was hoping it would get to 3p LYLO and then I could say postgame 'so the modding sucked, but at least the setup appears to be balanced!' but nooooo, the scumteam was far too good for that. (The
Dream
mechanic should really have been a bit stronger, with one or two less players appearing in dreams per night.)
