Hi everyone! Welcome to Frogs Mafia! It would appear that due to a distortion in the space time continuum, or possibly magic, your village, that was under attack by an evil gang of malicious beings (you know how it is with small villages and malicious entities from beyond the ken of mortal men), has become a swamp. A swamp populated with frogs. And the bad guys are not pleased about this (or perhaps they just generally have an unhappy disposition). They've decided to get some sort of revenge by killing everyone. And you, having no legal recourse, have decided to kill them right back. Joy.

Oh and as a warning... frogs do things differently to people. I should know. After all, I'm an omniscient frog deity thing with the power to kill at will, yet I have decided, unlike a human deity who would get involved with the smiting, to merely reveal the role and alignment of each player as they are murdered. Goodness knows why. It's a frog thing.

The Rules:

1) I reserve the right to edit the rules at any time and apply them retroactively, in response to situations I may not have envisaged.

9) Please let me know in advance if you are going to be away. If you are inactive without warning for 48 hours, I will send a prod. If that prod is not picked up in a further 48 hours, I will search for a replacement. If you manage to contact me before I find a replacement, you can continue with your place in the game, but after I've found one it's too late.

10) I don't have a stupid colour, or anything fancy like that, but I will ocasionally edit people's posts: if I've done this, I will make it clear that I have done this. Impersonating me or any of my backup mods will result in an immediate modkill.

11) If any player claims to be scum outing their partners, the following steps will be applied: a)The offending post will be deleted. B)The player in question will be modkilled. C)The thread will be locked. D)The scum will be PMed: I will ask them if they wish to continue the game. If the answer is no, the game will be abandoned (though I reserve the right to overrule the scum if I feel they are abusing this. Any attempt to abuse this, btw, I will take very seriously.) If the scum wish to continue the game, I will unlock the thread and we will continue. THESE PROCEDURES WILL BE TAKEN WHETHER OR NOT THE PLAYER IS TELLING THE TRUTH.

12) Modkills will end the day if it hurts the faction who is modkilled more.

13) DEADLINES ARE AUTOMATICALLY IN PLACE: Day 1 will end 5 weeks exactly after I declare the game has started. Day 2 will end 4 weeks after Night 1. All subsequent days will last 3 weeks.

14) At deadline, a majority of a majority is sufficient to lynch. For example, with 12 players, 7 would lynch normally and 4 will lynch at deadline -> the player with the most votes over four is lynched. However, if there are two players on the same number of votes, the player who reached the tie level first will be lynched.

15) Night will also be deadlined: at most 1 week will be given to submit actions, though honestly, it should not take that long. Missing night actions simply will not happen.

16) Just because I may have forgotten rules doesn't mean you can break them.

As night fell over the swamp, the crickets began to chirp. At first there was a solitary voice, a small peeping, only audible every few seconds or so, and then more voices join the chorus, until there is a constant wall of sound, a low hum, just on the edge of hearing, unavoidable.

"Bloody hell that's annoying."

There was a general feeling of irritation among the residents of the swamp. Something about being magically transformed did not sit well with them: they missed their fields, their cows, their horses. They were wet and miserable and generally unhappy. Besides, they knew that someone had to be blame for the mess they were in. It's not like magical transformations happen by magic or something (uh, we'll get back to you on that one), someone has to go out and do it!

And so they found someone to blame. Reasons were articulated. Very good ones, it was agreed by all and sundry. He was ugly, he had a stupid face and he was, evidently, a toad.

A hairy toad.



Frog looked down from on high to see these newest subjects of his squabbling. And frog took pity on them in their ignorance and revealed, in a flash of divine inspiration, that they had erred.

Day breaks. It is not a glamorous daybreak, for although the sun powers its way into the sky, it is immediately hidden behind a thick layer of soggy grey cloud. The air is already hot and oppressive, tinged with tension and a slightly acrid smell pervades it.

Something is wrong. There is no way it should be this hot yet.

Something else. There is no sound. The constant chirping of crickets has vanished.

No. Something portentous is afoot. Something... There is a sudden rumble of thunder.

The rain starts.

First a slow drip. Slowly, steadily building. The gentle rhythmic noise of rain on water, rain on trees, rain on branches, rain falling always falling pitter patter all around and desperate torrents of travelling water begin to gush from the torn and teeming sky; the world is washed out have to hide no time for thinking STORM.

A streak of lightning briefly lights up the sky. It is followed by a crackle of thunder.

The frogs take the opportunity to enjoy the weather.

It is some time, well after the storm is over, when it is possible to see more than a couple feet in front of your face again, that they find that one of their number is missing.

The thick, muggy air in the swamp, heavy with the weather, weighs down like a wet blanket on the creatures within. The atmosphere is tense, almost paranoid, and there is something... something wrong, strange. An unreal quality, unsettled. There is no noise, not anywhere, and the silence, heat and humidity are almost maddening in their completeness.

The silence... where are the crickets? The crickets have stopped singing...

No one dares to break the silence.

And then. There is a roar, a crashing noise! Water erupts in a magnificent wave, and the air and the sky and the swamp become as one, chaos, confusion, and in a brief instant - an impossible silhouette flies out above the crowd, lunges terrifyingly close overhead, and disappears. The aftershock is palpable, the tension released - maddened cries give vent to confusion and frustration.

When the moment passes, it suddenly becomes horribly clear that one of you is missing. Gorrad, the bullfrog, is gone.

As the confusion caused by the unexpected death of Gorrad begins to fade, it is replaced by a strange sense of relieved anger. Relief, on the one hand, that first of the perpetrators, the do-badders, the evil swinelike scumbag dastardly cowardly wretches who had come into this town,

our

town, and turned us all into, well, frogs was dead and anger, on the other, that there were still more to be found.

When frogs get angry, generally, there's a bit of hopping about, maybe some swimming in the stream. Perhaps they catch a fly or two. An angry frog is almost indistinguishable from a peaceful frogs - frogs just don't

do

emotions very well. Their faces aren't suited to it. It's the smile that does it - frogs are always smiling, with that self-satisfied, smug little grin on their faces - that makes it nigh impossible to truly express anger ina any meaningful way.

The fact that you're small and powerless - predator and not prey - does not hep either.

But these are not real frogs. These are human minds in the bodies of frogs - altered minds, to be sure, as any human finding themselves inexplicably transformed into a small hopping amphibian is liable to just go completely mad, right there and then - but still carrying in them some element of the things that made them human, some capacity of thought far beyond what anyone would expect from a frog. And so that anger, that very human anger, needed an outlet. A victim. A scapegoat.

Up in the heavens, the great God of Frog peered down at his newest followers with bemused puzzlement on his face. These were like no frogs he had ever seen, and quite frankly, something would have to be done. Nevertheless, he could see they were unhappy, and somewhere in his great froggy mind he realized they needed help.

And so, quickly, he broadcast down from the heavens his latest pronouncement on the motivations of the dead, before calling down the night to give him some time to discuss his dilemma with a friend of his.

As the days pass, and the inhabitants of the swamp become both more accustomed to their new forms, inevitably there are those who begin to feel comfortable, who begin tot hink that being a frog, well, it's not so bad. I mean, as long as you avoid the ducks, the pelicans, and the whatever the hell that thing was that ate Gorrad, the alligators, the snakes, the evil bastards who are killing you all, then it's a pretty stress free life. The food may be different, but frankly, you could get used to eating flies all your life.

Besides, the pelican is dead now. He died last night. Wait...

That pelican was one of our own, wasn't he? Wasn't he the one who called himself, uh... TheStatusQuo?

I've extended the deadline at least three times this game day. I don't think at any point every single player has been here. Honestly, you're all just going to have to deal with it, as we're rapidly approaching summer months and the holidays that always entails, and personally my access is going to be patchy over the summer. Yeah, this is definitely a contradiction in the ruleset. By Rule 14, Izzy would be our lynch by hitting 3 votes first. By the rule posted in the votecount, we'd have a No Lynch. Clarification please!

(As an aside, I am massively against no lynch at deadlines. To me, it seems like the mod punishing the town because the mod hasn't done his/her job properly with prods and replacements. However, with my previous ruleset that simply stipulated plurality lynches at deadline, there was no activity boost that is normally associated with a deadline as there was no need to compromise. My current ruleset is looking for a balance between these two problems. Plus, they give more control over who gets lynched to the most active players - thus providing an incentive to be active.)

The sun is hot today over the swamp, and it's inhabitants are languid in the heat. So languid, in fact, that they are nowhere reaching a decision as to who should be lynched today. Indeed, several of it's inhabitants seems to undergo strange fainting spells, and when they awake their personalities have undergone radical transformation. It's strange, and it's magic, of a sort, or rather a kind of divine intervention. Not by Frog, though. Frog has summoned a "friend".

The great God of Frog peers down at these bizarre occurrences with his mighty expressionless face. Eventually, he lets out a sigh and stops the sun in the sky. He shoots a look at his companion, who is sitting down and picking fleas of his back. Every once in a while, he sniggers, and shoots down a bolt of lightning.

Frog is convinced, by now, that these strange creatures are not frogs. They simply aren't acting like frogs normally act. The other God, though, seems unconcerned. The simple reason for this is that he knows exactly what is going on. He planned it, after all. Frog knows nothing of this. Frog is not exactly the brightest deity in the Pantheon.

He peers down once more at these troubling not-frogs and sees that they have finally reached a decision.

Monkey stops, and points at him.

"And you couldn't even save them anyway. HAHAHAHA. Frogs are such losers."

Frog looks down, looks all around and smiles. There is a glint in his whirring eyes. "And what is your interest here?" he asks Monkey. "Can you prove these beings are as you say?"

"What? Well of course I can, it was my spell after all. Look, I'll reveal the survivors now"

"What survivors?"

And indeed, there is no one left in the little desolate swamp that had been the source of Frog's worries for so long. All that remains are corpses. Ducks, frogs, even a dragon. But no humans, no monkeys, nothing that Monkey could point to as his domain. And though Duck was Frog's enemy, Duck would not interfere on Monkey's behalf. "The game is up, Monkey."

But the truth was simply this: no matter Monkey's failure, the evil impostors had got what they wanted. The town was emptied and the mining companies could move in. The only issue for ChannelDelibird and curiouskarmadog, who had scampered at the strange noises coming form the heavens, that remained was how to transform themselves back to humans. After all, Iguanas and Tree Frogs don't get to enjoy being obscenely rich as much as humans do.

Okay, where to begin?

I enjoyed modding this game immensely. I was pleased that all the way through days 1 and two activity was high, prods were needed only occasionally and I barely needed to replace anyone. It was a shame that the game stalled day 3: every time it seemed to be the top suspects who disappeared at the crucial stages, be it Raging Rabbit, DizzyIzzyB13, heh. I think the game stalled a bit there, but I'm not sure what I could have done to stop it from stalling. Day 4 was a bit meh. Scum victory never seemed in doubt once CKD was not lynched.

I'm slightly concerned about the balance of this game. I think it was scum favouring: the neighbours/jailkeepers/1-shot vig was not enough to counterbalance three scum, even one scum split off from the group. I'm coming round to the idea that turning one scum into a traitor is not actually a massive disadvantage, and scum had a lot going for them. I expected at least one kill to be blocked by the Gaolers. But on the other hand, town were never really close to lynching scum apart from ckd on Day 3.

Dayvigs are an awesome and underused role.

The Vote Condenser was part of a theme that was running through the game of challenging the meta. The neighbours were both town. There were doubles of roles. There were doubles of rolenames, which was to me far more interesting. Not all the players were Frogs in a game called Frogs Mafia (note - the names for the roles were assigned almost at random, with the exception of Pelican for Gaoler and Dragon for dayvig.) The Dragon's kill method was supposed to be deliberately misleading - no plumes of fire, no incinerations. I briefly considered insinuating he was actually an octopus, but I thought better of that in the setup stages.

Vote Condenser was an interesting role and a take on the Vote Thief role. Vote Thieves are generally considered so powerful in the hands of scum that they have to be town. As such, in the theme of challenging the meta, defying expectations, I wanted to try and find a way of creating a vote thief who could be scum. ckd's ability only worked against other scum. This also gave scum a way of identifying the traitor.

Oh no, not again...

So, there you were, minding your own business, living in your remote backwater in the middle of nowhere, wacthing TV. abusing your neighbours, lusting after your cousins and occasionally visiting nearby places of worship to atone for the sins of sloth, wrath and incest. Then they came. Actually, no one ever saw them come, which is surprising in such a small community, but they undoubtedly did, because the signs appeared, the signs telling everyone about how they were fabulously lucky because fabulous deposits of fabulous minerals had been found under their fabulous village, which would, by the way, shortly be becoming an amazing and fabulous mining community and everyone was kindly requested to take their sheep and cows and go.

Naturally, no one did. Stranger was the fact that no one appeared to enforce the demands printed on the signs. So a feeling of general unease grew, a sort of tension, anticipation of a combat that did not seem to ever be likely to happen. Gradually, that too faded and life went on much as before. With the exception of the weather.

Weather in these parts had always been more or less a lottery, though generally the rains came often enough to ensure the sheep didn't die. There had never been much of a climate, so to speak. Weather succeeded weather in delightfully irregular ways that defied even the oldest and most experienced of old hands. So when it began to rain on Monday, no one really questioned it. It was when it wan it was still raining late Thursday afternoon that a few people started to become suspicious. At least the rain did not appear to be flooding the place. Thank goodness for small mercies, they said. And all the frogs that came with the rain sure do taste good. And so, life continued largely as normal, except that the local shoemaker made a killing selling his newfangled waterproof boots.

The council was only called into action when the disappearances started. This was serious, now. Guards were posted. The guards disappeared. Fingers were pointed, resignations were called for, panic, in brief, descended. And still people were disappearing. But not just people, livestock too - barely a bleat or a moo could be heard. The rain was still falling. Frogs were everywhere, so much so that they had all but replaced mutton and milk in the local diet. The order was posted that no one was to leave their home until the whole mess was sorted out.

That was yesterday. Today, you awoke to discover you had become a frog. That's ok, because so had your neighbours and your cousin. Besides, being frogs, you now had a wonderfully uncluttered perspective on how to deal with what can only be the work of evil and malicious forces in your homeswamp - you drown 'em. Simple as. So that's what you're going to do. Good luck!

Honestly, the more I've been thinking about it, the more I think it might have been a scum advantage to have the Traitor, given that there were fewer connections for us to make so as to identify scum. Though I have no idea how I would have played that role, since you actually need to try to lynch the towniest people to feel comfortable. How would the game mechanics have worked if Gorrad was the only scum left?

Game would have continued but Gorrad would have had no kill.

EDIT: I agree with you about the traitor thing, tbh, but the implications of that worry me somewhat. Basically, it is implying that it is best to simply forget who your scum partners are rather than try to abuse the fact that you are a team to hoodwink the town.
