[Dead Rikimaru]

Jedah is the youngest out of the three High Nobles of Makai – the demon world, one that was always distressed about the future of his world. He believed that if it was left under the rule of Belial, the master of the Aensland family, it would grow old and begin to decay.
Jedah considered Belial to be an abomination, and actively sought out the opportunity to kill him, but was betrayed by his friend Ozumu, the gourmet eater of souls, and sent to a trap at the gates of Makai where he was consumed by the power of the gates.
One hundred years later Jedah is revived by the same power that once destroyed his body, and looks in disgust at the horrible world around him. He then decides the only way to salvation is to unite all souls - including his own - into one being: the Shintai, only then would world violence and conflict be ceased.
Using the soul of his betrayer as a cornerstone for a new dimension: Majigen, Jedah summoned the most powerful beings of Makai and outside in order to feed Shintai and make it strong enough to take over all realms of existence.
This is not a battle for your lives, this is a not a battle for your souls, this is a battle for existence as we know it. This is Darkstalkers Mafia.

II - RULES

1- VOTING

Votes must be in bold. (

It’s not necessary to unvote, unless you really don’t want your vote to be in any particular player.

2- LYNCHES

A Lynch occurs once a simple majority is reached.
At deadline the player with the most votes is lynched.
If at deadline two players have the same number of votes the lynch is decided by a duel (something like scissors/rock/paper). Duels do not apply to endgame situations.

3- DEADLINES

Basic deadline is 30 RL days after the start of a Game Day. After there are 9 or less players alive deadline is 3n, where n is the number of living players.
Don’t worry, deadlines are negotiable. If the town needs extra time, it will be given.

4- BAH POSTS

Once your death scene is posted it’s game over for you. Don’t spoil the fun for the others.
A “Go team!” post is acceptable, though.

5- COMMUNICATION

Do not discuss the game outside the thread unless you are allowed by your role pm.
If your role allows you to discuss the game remember to ONLY do it at the Night phase.

6- POST EDITION

Don’t edit or delete your previous posts. Do not use invisible text.
At the moment you decide to cheat you are already declaring yourself a loser.

7- NIGHT CHOICES

Night choices must be sent before deadline.
After deadline choices are either random or nonexistant, it depends on the mod’s mood.

8- PM QUOTING

Don’t quote any PMs by the mod.
Winning condition for town is: “You win when all threats to the demon world have been defeated, even if you are Resting In Peace. ”

9- PEACE AND LOVE.

Respect the other players.
It’s just a game, it’s not worth starting “real” fights because of it.

10- DOUBTS

Any question you have or mistake I may have made feel free to pm me.
I will try to make at least one vote count per page.

III - POLICIES

1- ACTIVITY CHECKS

Once or twice a week I will be sending activity checks to all players who haven't posted in the last 72 hours.
If you receive an AC please don't feel offended, this is my way of keeping the game alive by making sure all players are still around.
Simply opening the AC PM is enough to inform me that you are still around and playing. No need to answer the PM.

2- PRODS

Prods will be sent by request of other players, or if an AC PM is not opened several days after it has been sent.
If you receive a Prod PM you are expected to post ingame. Answering the PM is not necessary.
If a player has not opened or has opened but ignored the prod several days after it has been sent I will start looking for replacement.

3- NIGHTS

To avoid metagaming over Night replacements I may be sending activity checks to players without nightactions before I start a new Day.
Again no answer is needed, just opening your PM already shows that you are alive.

IV - INSTRUCTION MANUAL

What's Darkstalkers?

This sitehas the best, most passionate description.
Your role pm contains a link to the Wikipedia article on your character. If you need more, Google is your friend.

How accurate are the roles according to CAPCOM canon?

All characters and powers are based on the storyline, but were formatted to fit the roles of a twelve-player Mafia game. Game balance takes precedence over canonical accuracy.

What are RIP and BIH?

RIP stands for "Resting In Peace". It's the default place for dead players.
BIH stands for "Burning In Hell". The name was chosen just for being the popular opposite of "Resting In Peace". Dead players are sent there when their souls are being used for any purpose by other players.

What are ranks?

Ranks represent different levels of power among darkstalkers. Some abilities may not work against higher class characters (explained in the role pm).
Ranks in the game are B-Class (lower), A-Class and S-Class (higher). Only darkstalkers have ranks.

Can ranks change?

Some characters are able to have their ranks increased by their actions or the actions of other players. If you can increase in rank and are supposed to know how it's explained in your role pm.

Can alignements change?

Some characters may have their alignements changed by their actions or the actions of other players. Win or loss will be affected by the player's alignement on endgame.

Can win conditions change?

Some characters may have their win conditions changed by their actions or the actions of other players. Win or loss will be affected by the player's win condition on endgame.

How do duels work?

Duels work pretty much like rock/scissors/paper, so it's luck based.
I will request a certain number of choices that the duelists will send by PM.
The choices will be compared to define the winner.
The winner keeps playing and the loser is dead.
In case of a draw nobody dies.

I started Mafia 69 being very strict on the prod/replace department, made some players upset , and in the end we all agreed to a "posting pace" and I didn't have to prod that much.
I was a bit lenient in this game in the beggining, also because I got into two of my busy weeks, but since players are slacking I'm going to be much more strict from now on.
Replacements are always hard to find, but if I found 13 for a 70-page game so this is going to be easy for me. I also have at least two candidates in line to join the game, so keep posting.

Rogueben saw his disguise about to be exposed and decided to attack instead. His body melts into a cloud of vampire bats, taking all players by surprise and putting them down to the ground. The only one who was able to endure the attack and still stand was the stranger, whose whip pierced throght the dark cloud of flying creatures.

The enraged Rogueben unleashes his fury like never before, but in vain. The stranger knew his weak spot and went for it.
Each bat was a part of Demitri's body, paying attention to his chest during the transformation the stranger was able to identify the one that corresponded to the heart. It was the only bat he needed to destroy...

So... what's your favorite cult movie?

: I'm a fan of Stanley Kubrick. Sometimes it's hard to decide my favorite among his movies, but I'd pick Dr. Strangelove as my fave as it is arguably the best political satire of the 20th century.

: Political satires from famous directors? My favorite is Bananas, by Woody Allen. Revolution is a political theme that appeals to me much more than nuclear war.

After a brief discussion the town as a whole, moved more by fear than by solid evidence, decided GW knows too much to be innocent.
GhostWriter didn't show much of a reaction either, insect brains are not that resourceful and since GW spent most of its capacity thinking about cinema there was not much left for self defense.

Night 3 - The Embodiment of Evil

Coffin Joe is an undertaker. He is always seen wearing a black top hat, a black cape, and has extremely long fingernails.
His ultimate goal is to sire the perfect child from the perfect woman, but after decimating the population of his homeland without finding a soulmate he is forced to search around the world.
He funds his journey by offering his "services" in the many mafia-plagged small towns he finds on the way.

After an unfruitful visit to the town of Nox Hill he decides to make a journey to a place far away: Jedah's dimension Majingen! There, as he heard, the most powerful creatures of night risk their own souls in a battle to save the world. Plenty of business opportunities for an undertaker...

IMPORTANT

Inside Bishamon's soul there is an everlasting struggle between Hannya, the armor of hate, and the will of Oboro, a man.
Every time you spill the blood of an innocent Hannya will take over, and you will turn into a selfaligned SK.
If you manage to kill two evil players in a row Oboro will rise again and you regain your initial win condition.

Killing a protown player will turn Bishamon into a SK.
Bishamon will earn a level every time he changes alignement.
After reaching S Class Bishamon won't shift alignement anymore.
Bishamon's final win condition will be the one he has at endgame or when he dies.

Q-Bee - survivor (GhostWriter)

As the queen of the hive, it's your duty to collect nutritive souls in order to feed the other Soul Bees.
Every Night you may select a name under the R.I.P. section of the status page. The soul of this dead player will be collected.
You have no interest in the matters of other races, you only want to collect some souls and go back alive to your hive.

You win if you are alive by endgame and have collected at least one soul

Unfortunately you have no room for an infinite number of souls, so as an alternative:

You win if at any moment in the game you have collected four souls

SAFE CLAIM

I don't think you really need one. Also because Q-Bee is not really evil (just hungry).
You can claim survivor, or make up an ability. Use your imagination.

Souls collected by Q-Bee are sent to B.I.H section of the status page.
If Q-Bee wins all players that had their souls collected by her lose the game, regardless of their team's performance
Q-Bee gains a level after collecting three souls

In order to have the power to fulfill your desire of ruling the Demon World and having your revenge agaist the Aensland House you need to feed on the blood of other darkstalkers.
You have the following abilities:
- Midnight Bliss: Every Night you may target a player. You will suck the player's blood and as a result he/she will die. If you target a darkstalker of a Class higher than yours the action will fail.
- Demon Billion: If you are targetted by a killing role your body turns into a band of bats and the kill fails. Demon Billion works automatically, but it cancels your use of Midnight Bliss.

You win if by endgame you are the only player left alive

IMPORTANT

Morrigan Aensland's blood has a special taste. It was her deceased father, Belial, who defeated and banished you from the Demon World.
If you target and kill Morrigan you will reach S-Class and will be able to use Midnight Bliss and Demon Billion on the same Night.

Your created this dimension and summoned the other players. Now all you need is to collect their souls.
Every night you may use ONE of the following abilities:
- Recruit: You choose a player and try to steal his/her soul. If you succeed the player becomes your follower.
- Hide: You choose one of your followers and hide behind him/her. Any nightaction directed at you will affect that follower instead. Of course you must have at least one follower alive to use this.

You win automatically when at least 50% of the players are cult members and it’s impossible to stop them from winning.

RECRUITING

You can only recruit darkstalkers as followers.
If you have no followers alive you can only recruit B-Class darkstalkers.
If you have at least one follower alive you can recruit A-Class darkstalkers.
If at any moment in the game you have two followers alive you raise to S-Class. After that you can recruit A-Class darkstalkers regardless of how many followers you have alive.

FOLLOWERS

Your followers share the same win condition as you.
You don't get to know their role names. When you try to recruit a player you are just informed if it worked or not.
When a player is recruited by you he/she receives the following PM:

You have been recruited by Jedah (Player), the cult leader.
Your votes against him will not be counted.
You CAN'T talk to him. You may receive messages from THE MOD ONLY.
Your win condition has been replaced:

You win automatically when at least 50% of the players are cult members and it’s impossible to stop them from winning.

The cult has NO night talk, but every Night you can send ME a pm with instructions for the day. I will send the pm to all followers.

Huitzil has the ability of using his powerful magnets to hold a player, roleblocking him. Huitzil is unable of roleblocking and killing at the same time, so if at any point in the game he is alone he must choose either to kill or roleblock.

You win automatically when at least 50% of the players are dark hunters and it’s impossible to stop them from winning.

Sasquatch - doc/roleblocker.
Every Night you can freeze a player with your ice breath. The player will be locked inside an ice block and will be protected from nightkills, but won't be able to perform nightactions either.
Victor von Gerdenheim - JoaT
You can increase the size of your body parts at will, earning special abilities:
- HANDS: Protect a player.
- FEET: Kills a player stomping on him.
- EYES: Investigate a player.
- BUTT: Deflect a nightkill.
You can only use each ability once, and only one every night.

Ooba stopped the kill of an innocent and prevented the vig from becoming a SK. Good job.
GhostWriter asked me if he could to skip collecting a soul afraid of conflict with other “soul catchers”. There is no such thing but I was afraid if I forced him to act I would be favoring a player by forcing him to come closer to meeting his winning condition, so I agreed to skip (because no night action is mandatory). I also didn’t like when Twonz skipped a Mafia kill on Mafia 69 (it also worked against him). I will consider making all night actions (except for vig) mandatory on my future games.

GAME MECHANICS

Here I explain the decisions I took while designing the game, what I expected to happen and what actually happened.
The fun of making setups is to give players a myriad of paths to choose and see the game be defined by the paths they choose.
This game in particular had many possible outcomes and a different set of players with different choices could make it walk a totally different way.
I surely intend to run similar games in the future.

1- Game Balance

My MAIN concern for this game was not balance (not that it was not a concern), I wanted to make a FUN game with lots of night actions, alignment changes and where anything could happen.
All sides had a shot at winning. Town had an "easy" win due to a combination of events, but

if ooba, for example, didn't protect springlullaby on Night 1 town would reach Day 2 with only 4 members and there would be an extra SK.

2- Too much protection?

The game had 2 Doc/Rb, a Mafia Blocker and a JoAT with one shot protection and block.
It also had a Mafia, a SK, a Vig and a JoAT with one shot kill.
The reason for this was to make the number of deaths by night unpredictable and with varied killing methods.

There were few Night Kills because:
- SK got lynched on Day 1
- Vig decided not kill on Night 2 (I expected the vig to kill without worry since if he killed townies he would not win with town anymore)
- JoAT used protection but died before using kill
- Cultist failed to recruit (recruitees would lose abilities)

The game had a lot of potential to be a 2-day bloody massacre, it was fun to see how each individual action contributed to the final result.

3- Jailkeeper or Doc/Roleblocker?

All players automatically considered doc/rb = jailkeeper. They didn't even question themselves if there could be a difference.
I decided to name the roles doc/rb because in "my" action order jailkeeping is considered a one single action that works on the blocking turn. Due to the multiple protecting and blocking in the game I wanted the blocking to go first, so I broke jk into doc/rb.

- If Rikuo and Anakaris protected each other both would be blocked and neither protected.
- If Rikuo protected Anakaris (for example) Anakaris would be protected but would fail to protect/rb

4- Order of Night actions

Game after game my standard rules section becomes larger and larger.
I'm always finding out things that would better be explained in the game rules. In this game it's the order of nightactions. My standard order would be:

1- blocking
2- protecting
3- killing
4- recruiting
5- investigating

- Flameaxe died as town because killing goes before recruiting.
- Claus failed to protect Flameaxe because blocking goes before protection
- If springlullaby investigated a player that had just been culted she would see him already as guilty because recruiting goes before investigating

5- Repeated roles

I used repeated roles for several reasons:
- It helped safe claims to look real
- It helped to increase the town's paranoia
- It was fun to design the JoAT's with several different powers.

6- Safe claims

A decent mode must always be prepared against mass claims in themed games.
For this game I prepared very detailed safe claims. It's a shame most of them were not used.

If the players decided for a D1 mass claim it would look like this:
Doc/Rbs: Rikuo/Anakaris/Victor(Mafia)
JoATs: Felicia/Hsien-Ko/Sasquatch(Mafia)
Vigs: Bishamon/Donovan(SK)
Cops: Morrigan/Lilith/Jon(Cult)

- The Mafia claims would make trios with the real Docs and JoATs, making them hard to confirm and to trust.
- The SK received a vig claim with a sword killing method, the same method of the real vig.
- The Cult leader received a tricky claim. It was a Darkhunter Cop to combine with the SK Cop(Morrigan) and Cult Cop(Lilith). This claim had a high risk/high return as it was very believeable but made the claimer a target for the mafia.

7- About the Survivor

I didn't give the survivor a safe claim because making the most to survive was his responsibility. Also it was not a scum role and was recruitable.

8- About the Mafia

It was hard to select the characters, Darkstalkers has lots of potential for SKs but little for Mafia. In the end I decided to mix BBHood and Huitzil because they had different reasons to kill the others and no reason to kill each other.

Two reasons for a two-man mafia:
1- To open space for a cult and a SK without adding too much scum.
2- Because if many kills connected a 3-man Mafia could win very fast.

Both darkhunters were found due to "investigations" but I think it was a mistake not to use the safe claims. They didn't even try.

9- About the Cult

An inflating scum faction was dangerous in a mini with so many killing roles, and could win the game very fast. To make the things more interesting I gave the cult some features:
- The Cult Recruiter had two possible actions: Hide or Recruit. If he selected Hide he would not fear a nightkill, but would not be able to Recruit.
- If the Cult Recruiter died the cult would dissolve and he would lose. This was to make him fear nightkills enough to actually consider using Hide.
- To make things even more interesting Jedah's power increased with more recruits. I was looking forward to seeing how would the player deal with such choices. (in the end he didn't have to. Since he never managed to recruit anyone recruiting was always his only choice)
- Only the mafia was totally immune to recruitment, even Demitri and Morrigan could be recruited as long as Jedah had already a living recruit.

The cult recruiter was a counterpart to the survivor, and an undisclosed survivor himself.
While Q-Bee stole the souls of dead players, Jedah stole the souls of living ones, and both needed to be alive in order to win.

armlx played well, but was very unlucky with night actions.
On Night 1 he could recruit 7 out of 10 possible targets. He went for one of the three that he couldn't.
On Night 2 he went for a recruitable, but the Mafia killed that player.

On Night 3 he went for the best possible choice: the cult cop. That choice could have won the game but Claus blocked it and killed the cult.

10 - Memorable moments

- Demitri was lynched on Day 1 and Morrigan became the same as a vanilla townie in a game that was supposed to not have vanillas.
- Thriller!
- Drunken Piper rhymes and making scenes with them.
- The Replacement virus failed to destroy the game
- Xtoxm "helping" the town on Day 4.

I suppose bagging the SK Day one made things a lot easier, as well as the cultcop surviving long enough to reveal. Before the role and night action reveals, I was actually thinking town was overpowered (even with a sk and cult out there) but it looks more like we got lucky making all the right moves.

This game may look like it had too many protective roles.
It did.
But it also had too many killing roles. One of the worst case scenarios was the game ending on Day 2 for excessive killing.

But the decisions the players took made it go the other way.

1- The SK was lynched on Day 1, having no chance to kill.
2- ooba's incredibly lucky choice of protection on Day 1 saved the Vig from killing the Cult Recruiter and becoming another SK.
3- Mafia's REFUSAL to use the SAFE claims didn't bring town the paranoia that was the purpose of their creation, so the real protectors were easy to confirm and coordinate actions to avoid kills even more.

Those three factors plus the Cultist lack of luck in choosing targets gave town a big advantage.

If ooba protected someone else on Night 1 town would have had little chance.

If Claus didn't block armlx on Night 3 he would have recruited spring and cult would be in a very good position to win.

Also Gorckat made excellent use of each of his one-shots. Specially the investigation on Xtoxm on Night 2. Looks like you hit your tree, Gorckat.

Both JOAT and Jailkeeper are very underestimated roles. I'm surprised a single kill actually went through though, what with 2 jailkeeps, 1 protective JOAT, a mafia RB, and an NK immune SK.

But there was a Vigilante, a SK, the Mafia, and a killing JoAT.
And players recruited by the cult (even the SK could be recruited) would lose their power.
All of this was taken into consideration (Night 1 could have had up to three deaths) and the events mentioned on my last post turned the game into the direction it went through.
Actually I didn't aim for a game with too many kills or too little kills. I aimed for things that would confuse the player's logic. Like having 1 death in one Night and 3 deaths i other and multiples of the same role making hard to see through fake claims.

I actually thought for a long part of the game that flameaxe had killed me and was thinking why would have vig have targeted me - but that was not the case

A samurai killing with exploding apples?

1- Maybe mafia was a bit underpowered?
2- Why the "recruiter dies, everyone unconverts" mechanic? I think it was too harsh on the cult.
3- People losing their powers when joining a cult, AND the cult leader not knowing their roles AND cult not speaking at night = cult not being able to effectively fake their night results?
4- Your clarification PM to Mokina really made me "clear" her... I'm not sure what could have been done about it.

4- It cleared her to you, not you to her (as seen on Day5) .
Also, on the following Night she blocked you from protecting Flameaxe, which also cleared her anyway, so the PM had insignificant effect in the game.
And that was not an ambiguous answer. You asked if your protection avoided cult recruitment. I was afraid that simply saying no I would confirm the existence of the cult and clear springlullaby.
I said you had the power of a doc plus the power of a cultist. Docs protect against nightkills, not cults. So it was a clear NO.
Next time I will simply refuse to answer
