Mini 460 - Werewolves! Game over.

Darkness...

The little village community had lain undisturbed for years, living in relative tranquility by a small river from which the crops were irrigated and the cattle were fed. However, recently dark things have happened to your little village.

It started slowly. Livestock disappearing, mostly. Then things got nasty. People started going missing, gone without a trace from their beds. As time went by, it seems the creatures got bolder, leaving their victims dead where they lay, wantonly leaving body parts strewn in grisly messages of fear.

Eventually, something had to be done. The mayor called a meeting in the local town hall. Only twelve people came, all the rest were dead, it seems. As the last person entered the hall, he drew the giant doors together and locked them.

"People! Our village is doomed. We cannot hope to return to the life we once knew. However, we can ensure that none of these creatures escape unpunished for these vile deeds. This door will not be unlocked until the last of the monsters lies dead before me. More blood will be spilled before safety is found."

The days go by and discussion settles in as to who is responsible for the terrible tragedies that had overcome your once prosperous village. Accusations fly, conspiracies form, mistrust is rife. Candidates are proposed, but little headway is made.

The new moon...

As the days of the lunar month hurry by, a sense of panic begins to overtake the survivors. Eventually, they begin to turn on a young man,

. A scapegoat. Accusations begin to fly, villagers blaiming him for everything from the weather, to the loss of their daughter. His name becomes a byword for villainy. He becomes an outcast, rejected by the others, left to strew in his own devices.

The moon waxes...

Eventually they turn on him. Gathering together, a group of begin to beat him. Brutally. He is bound to a chair, and kicked and spat upon. Finally, his body breaks. The bloodlust rises. The villagers realise with disgust at what they've done, as his face, oh so human, stares at them accusingly.
One among the townsfolk realises that they cannot be sure, even now, of his humanity. Taking a silver crucifix from their neck, they slowly lay it across the body of the broken man. Nothing. He was human.

Another month drifted slowly by. The villagers paranoia grew as they realized that killers still lurked among them. A simple greeting was viewed with suspicion, a smile grounds for a beating, and a laugh as a motive to kill.

The new moon...

In this environment, then, it was unfortunate that Deathsauce was an optimistic fellow. He had been relatively fortunate: his wife and children had so far survived the attacks, and his livestock had been largely spared the attacks of marauding wolves. And so, naturally, he was a target of envy in the village.

It was a misplaced joke that did it. Some stupid witticism about wolves. A little thing. Yet it was all it took. The next day, a group of villagers had assembled outside his house, demanding his head and those of his family. When they broke down his door, he barely struggled. When they took him outside, his eyes wore a glazed look. It was only when they grabbed his wife and children that he began to call for mercy. None was given.

There was howling on the wind again last night. Noone sleeps at the full moon any more, so the sounds of screams outside sent a chilling message to the surviving villagers. Each individual secretly prayed that they would be spared the same fate.

In the morning, gathered together to check on friends and family, it quickly became apparent two people were missing. The first, Numenorean7, was not found. The door to his house had been broken down and a red stain had been left on the wooden floor. Searching through his personal effects, a list of criminals and their holding cells is found, along with the keys to the local gaol.

Numenorean7, Jailkeeper, has been eaten.

However, the second body was found, stumbled over in a copse in the nearby wood by a local lumberjack. Still partially transformed, with a gaping hole in his chest, was Panzerjager. He seemed to have been stabbed, however the stab wound was somehow burnt, as were other smaller wounds across his body. The first of their foes defeated, the village began to plan their next execution.

Things seemed grim. Despite the death of one of the wolves, there were clearly still more out there. Dark shapes were looming in the shadows and rumours of worse to come did nothing to help the atmosphere. Superstition by this point was rife, and every villager had an object of silver they kept treasured by their bedside.

Jenter Brolincani had never been a lucky man. He was renowned for it, in fact. Ever since he was a child he had shied away from games of chance after losing several sure fire bets with his classmates. It should come as no surprise then, that it was chance who frowned on him again to seal his death.

As he stepped out of his house early in the morning, shivering and tired from another sleepless night, it just so happened that the moon had not quite fallen. A neighbour saw him leaving the house, and was amazed to see that due to a freak of the light a single moonbeam was shining down exactly on him. It was taken as a sign, a sign that Jenter Brolincani must die.

As is the way of all things, Blight's life had drawn to a close. After escaping from the monastery he had hoped for safety, but it was not to be. He never saw the face of his assailant, merely heard his voice as the swordblade plunged into his back.

Battle Mage admired his handiwork, and waited for the silver in his sword to produce the burns he had seen on Panzer when he had killed him. Time passed. He began to grow nervous as nothing appeared on the corpse. It dawned on him that perhaps Blight had been human, as he had claimed. But then...

He never finished his thought. Howls outside brought home to him the terrible danger he was in. He quickly readied his sword, prepared to strike at the first glimpse of fur.

Ectomancer smiled as he peered through the darkened night at the young swordsman. His flesh would be delicious. Stealthily, he approached his target, ready to rip him limb from limb before tearing into his tender meal. He approached his prey. Oblivious. Closer. He could practically taste it now.

Shwing!

His side erupted in pain as the swordsman swung round with incredible speed. Snarling, Ectomancer felt the flesh burning as he attacked his intended victim.

Kaleidoscope was worried. Blight hadn't turned up at the rendezvous point as expected. Quickly he grabbed warm clothing and hurried into the night to track him down. Howls on the air. He shivered and quickened his step. Suddenly, he thought he heard a scream. He began to run. Then he heard voices, two of them, one a male voice, confident began taunting the other one, a voice that could only be described as a kind of low growl.

He entered the doorway and saw the werewolf battling the young swordsman, both tired and injured, but the swordsman with the upper hand. It was the last thing he saw. A being of immense strength cracked his head against the doorframe and walked in.

Ectomancer smiled. The Alpha Wolf had arrived at last. Now the insolent one could be dealt with. Battle Mage hadn't noticed the new arrival yet and Ectomancer quickly distracted him, snarling viciously as he leapt on the smaller opponent. The human kicked hard in the groin and struggled to his feet. Colour drained from his face. He was trapped. His death was messy.

Off the Mark smiled at Ectomancer. It would be a simple thing now to hunt down the remaining townspeople. The killer of their kin had been dealt with and it was now time for the fun to begin...

The setup had neither cop nor doc, as I don't like them. The masons took over the cop role slightly as they were confirmed innocents (in theory, anyway). The jailkeeper was obviously a doctype, (though originally I had it down as roleblocker. Roleblocker had the disadvanage of condemning scum if there was no kill, and jailkeeper worked better flavourfully, so it became a jailkeeper). The vig completed the set, essentially. His kills were with a silver sword, so any werewolf kills would also be burnt.

I worked out which scum targeted by means of which one sent the PM to me. In future I would tell them this beforehand (though it worked in their favour, as Ecto sent in the kill the night numenorean died and numenorean targeted Off the Mark)

The mason vig is what gets me. I did mean to put in their role pm that they had each other confirmed innocent, but in my opinion mason traitors are way out of line for a normal game. Of course, you might assume they were both scum. But I have never yet seen a scum fakeclaim mason (aside from once, and then they refused to claim a partner), as it ties irrevocably two of the scum together and can screw them over if one gets hit by an SK or something. Also, people tend to get suspicious if they keep surviving the night. It's risky and not worth the benefit.

Scum played well. They were never really in danger of losing (though leaving the masons alive that long seems risky to me, it payed off) and pushed the right wagons at the right times. Town didn't play particularly well, in particular looking scummier than the scum at times (which could only help mislynches).

Out of curiosity, did you like the long day an night scenes?

Each cloister was filled with grisly remains of your brother monks, mangled and torn, limbs missing and covered in blood. Gazing down, you saw the altar, crushed by incredible strength and adorned with the head of the abbot. Cursing, you renounced your vows and swore, along with your partner, to hunt the killers whereever they stood. You win when all threats to the town are dead.

Welcome to the game. You are the local jailkeeper. Each night you may imprison one player in his room, protecting him from harm and preventing him from taking any action. You win when all threats to the town are dead.
